Thanks for watching. The recoil on this Lawnboy mower was working just fine last year now it won't catch properly. I've never had to maintain a recoil before but it wasn't that difficult.
Would always try to fix first. Your repair/cleaning is exactly what most shops won’t do anymore; they want to put on new parts and charge $$
you are absolutely right
I had the same problem with the recoil starter of my 3500 watt emergency electrical generator not engaging properly. If I have to actually use the emergency generator in a power outage I cannot be in the position where I cannot start it. A ten minute cleaning and lube, like you demonstrated, is the most economical way to go. I just cleaned and lubed the recoil assembly ( very similar to yours) and it now easily engages and works perfectly. I can now rest assured it will engage properly and start the engine.

Hey, I got the coil today, I installed it and the mower started right up and always starts the first time I pull it. Also it runs much smoother and no muffler noises. Then I mowed a decent sized property for like 30 mins and when I stop it started first pull. I was thankful it was not a bad seal although I heard of that issue once on a trimmer. Reason I replaced the coil is so cheap and Bruce Penders video did the same thing and had the same issue and when he replaced it mower had no issues.

I heard they have a bad reputation for coil failure but thankfully with fast shipping you can get one for 15 bucks and now I have a amazing lawnmower
@@topfin8441 I agree with you. I really like them. I grew up on 2cycle mowers. Makes me think I'm young again.
I would love to have one of those mowers. I want that lawnboy 2 cycle with the self propelled Duraforce engine. And the recoil not catching is the easiest recoil fix possible as all you need to do is spray wd40 on the recoil, give it a few pulls put it back on and it should work

Great video. My Dad gave me this same lawn mower. It didn't start so I looked up some videos and tried to clean out the carburetor first. Once I put it back together, after the first pull my rope broke. So I don't even know if my fix did anything haha. I tried to fix the rope but I think I broke the spring mechanism because the rope won't spin back in anymore. Do I have to buy a whole new recoil starter or can the recoil mechanism be fixed?
Also, I think I may need to install a whole new coil because I have a feeling my carburetor fix didn't do anything. I saw a video on that after I saw the one on the carburetor. Any suggestions would be helpful!!
I would just buy a replacement recoil assembly. It's technically discontinued but you can find aftermarket ones on Ebay for around $20. You'll have to drill out the rivets though and replace with nuts and bolts. Before you buy it tough, if you have a strong drill, you can just use a socket adapter to turn the engine over with till you know that the engine runs. The coils on these go bad all the time. Have you check it for spark yet?

Well I replaced the recoil pull starter in my Briggs and Stratton 3 horsepower powered Supa Swift lawnmower & I lubed up both the shaft & spiral gear with that lithium spray grease to give it some lubrication & it operates very smoothly, probably better than it did with molybdenum disulphide grease.
So ,I'll do whatever I can to fix it up !

Hey, I just got a similar one with a Duraforce engine for 50 bucks. But the issue with it is when you start it cold it will run as long as you want it to until you let go of the handlebar. Then it won’t restart. So i ordered a new ignition module for 15 bucks. Do you think that was the problem?

Any specific type of lubricant you recommend for the pull cord or just whatever I have on hand?
I'd recommend a "thin" lubricant. I'll leave it at that. Do not use anything that's "thick" because it could cause it to bind up later on.
should a brand new twice used (B&S) engine have this problem? You would not think it was dirty or needed lubed

did you be a complete recoil Assembly? do you have the part number? Tell about the problem you had with the mower, how did it happen?
What great mowers eh, I've got my dad's gold series commercial drage model from his business before he retired, it's 25yrs old this summer and this is the first thing thats EVER went wrong with it even after years of daily lawn maintenance use. Now mine intermittently won't retract or grab to pull engine over. If I play around with it and wind it up manually it will randomly retract and then grab half way out on a pull. Do you think my recoil spring is broken? I haven't removed it as the pull start assy is actually riveted to the housing in the gold series. I hate to drill out the rivets if I don't have to, thoughts anyone? (I already sprayed wd40 inside it, made no difference, can it even get in there without removing pullstart assy?)
no I don't think it's broken, this happens sometimes and there's not much that can be done, except putting a bandage on it. Best to just replace the recoil assembly
The pawl dogs shown that flip out when the starter rope is pulled should be part # 590616 from what I see if this helps anyone out. I just ordered 1 of them as someone one of the popped out and I can't find it.

for starters in my own view i,d try having a good look into repair fixing it before replacing the pull starter
