- The B-29 is designed to be one of the most deadly, untouchable bombers ever created. The B-29 can reach heights no other planes or air-fighters could reach, and the B-29's payload can deliver devastating fire power that can level an enemy base. Watch our new incredible military video as we break down what made the B-29 a WWII superfortress!

Japanese when they send fighters without ammo:prepare to take down some bombers
Pilot:how will we?
Commander:we are gonna use a tactic that guarantees death.
None of them hit a bomber though and were shot down before they had the chance.
@@lockheedmartin2112 actually Japanese would mostly ram b17s
@@pov1698 I meant no B-29 Superfortress was ever rammed, but I should've clarified that in the first comment I made.

Not surprising considering the silver lion cost.
Crazy to also think of how 88 took off that day, but only 2 of those planes (not the exact ones) still fly.
The industrial power of the US never cease to amaze me. WW1 the US feeds and supplies the biggest war in human history. WW2 the US does ths same while also handling a large portion of all global shipping, also researching a big portion of technological innovation, and also fighting on 3 continents and from the other side of the globe. Cold War the US rebuilds the western world and supplies/funds nations as diverse as South Korea, south Vietnam, western Europe, and various parties, freedom fighters/terrorists, and governments across the world effectively out spending the Soviet Union and PRC several times over. Even Today the States of New York, California, and Texas each individually have economies roughly the size of Russia.
I'm glad I wasn't required to imagine I was a WWII pilot in order to watch this video.

Well badass and freezing
PTSD FOR THE WIN BABBY
@StodgyPigeon061, Actually B-29 gunners had it easy, the guns were remote operated, and given that the B-29 had a maximum service ceiling of around 33 THOUSAND feet and max airspeed of (and no this isn't bs) 350mph... the Japanese had little that could even HOPE to touch this thing.
Funny enough though, that's probably why the B-29 wasn't approved for European use, because the B-17 was considered adequate, and the Germans actually had planes that could reach this plane reliably.

I'm glad my maternal grandfather's B-29 never got shot down. I would've liked to fly one of those if I was in his shoes.
Your grandfather did something considered impossible, attack mainland Japan, he has my best wishes
Two things I wanted to point out. First, the B-29 had a tricycle landing gear with a nose wheel in the front while the main landing gear in the wings rather than the bicycle gear as seen in the video. Second the Zero had it's main landing gear in the wings as well and a much smaller tail wheel. Just something I'd like point out as an aviation enthusiast myself, as constructive criticism of you will.

I hope that one day in my life we have a flying aircraft carrier. Kind of like the helicarrier in Avengers.
The Russians actually built a TB-3 parasite aircraft carrier, I believe it was even used in combat once and I think it was quite effective, the Americans passed around the idea of doing the same thing with the 747.
@@tatevolk7553 I just looked into it, it is called Zveno project. It wasn't a full blown carrier but it held a few aircraft. It was actually very effective. Too bad nothing came of it after 1942.

B-29s: *emergency lands in the Soviet Union*
Soviet Union: It's free real estate
The B-29 continued to be used in Korea and throughout the 1950s as the primary bomber of the newly formed formed USAF and was the main bomber used in most of the raids until the Soviet Migs made them easy targets for the jet fighters restricting them to nighttime runs.
yep it became te B-50 superfortress
@@lenoreallen8859 Basically the same but with new features
Best animation hand down love it.
9:15 Imagine seeing that coming at you
Very angry shell
It's worth mentioning that Japan did have some fighters capable of reaching the B-29's cruising altitude, mainly the Kawasaki Ki-45 _Toryu_ ('Dragonslayer') and Nakajima Ki-84 _Hayate_ ('Gale'), but numbers of these were in short supply due to a lack of raw materials to manufacture them in significant numbers by the time raids on the main islands by B-29s became more frequent. Japan was also working on a purpose-built 'B-29 killer', the Kyushu J7W _Shinden_ ('Magnificent Lightning'), but this plane never left the prototype phase, as by the time it conducted its three test flights - two of which occurred on the same days as the nuclear bombings - the war was for all intents and purposes, over.
There is not only A6M Zero Fighter, there is Kawanishi N1K and Nakajima Ki-84 too, they can reach with their service ceiling against B29.

That’s only on naval ships witch did happen at one point but on normal airfields no.

My great grandfather escorted B-29’s on missions to the Japanese home islands in his P-51 and P-38. He didn’t tangle with any Japanese fighter aircraft because they were practically unable to reach the bombers.
My grandfather was a gunner in this plane and he was lucky to live. Makes you a lot more thankful of this country. And to think people even dare to kneel for the flag. Sadly my grandfather died of COPD when he was in his late 80s, but he was very lucky to be alive after the war.

11:05 The bombsight is the Norden Mk. XV;
The Norden bombsight functioned as a part of a whole system. As the bomber approached its target, the bombardier entered data about wind direction, airspeed and altitude into the bombsight's analog computer, which calculated wind drift and provided the correct aim point.
(I don't think the information is classified anymore)
yes, at the time it was very classified. in fact before the Doolittle Raid, the Nordens were removed for a fear that they would be captured. what replaced it during the raid? a homemade bombsight by one of the crew members of one of the B-25s, though what his name is escapes me

It’s often spoke of that Germany was developing super weapons (and they did, particularly the ME 262 and the V2), and they had many others in design phase. However, the US and allies did a lot more in a practical sense. We had great approximate (area aware) flak, the best heavy bombers, and amazing fighter planes. The Russians made probably the most cost/effective tank of the war, and also the incredible tank buster IL-2 (like the A-10 of its day). The Russians paid a heavy price- losing more personnel in that war than ALL of US losses in all of our wars combined. God bless us all and may we one day learn to work together and dismiss petty differences.
