Interesting fact about the SR-71 It would expand so much during operation that the fuel tanks were designed to have gaps them, they would leak fuel until at operating height then would seal up due to the expansion.
That’s what I thought at first, but then I realized that the sr-71 doesn’t have vertical takeoff or water landing capabilities. The only real similarity is that both are able to go speeds of higher than Mach 3 and are black.
Fun facts: the SR-71 shot itself down early on in training when they tried to make it a duel purpose aircraft. It also cashed multiple times during take offs due to how fast it can travel. The plane was built to expand and contract depending on its elevation.
seeing as a massive amount about the SR is still classified? and it was only revealed as an actual thing only after several successful flights.... i would say it is very secretive
The A-12 was the predecessor to the SR-71 and flew higher and faster but wasn't included in the official speed and altitude records due to it being classified at the time.
I watched a documentary on a pilot that had to eject from the SR71 Blackbird. He said that he tried to get to his partner but he was already dead. Ejecting out of the plane at the speeds they were at, it probably should have killed both of them. He said he can still remember his face being stripped away. I know what it feels like to stand up in the back of a truck with my face sraight at it. I couldnt breathe and it was kind of hurting. We were only going 80mph. So i cant even imagine what those pilot's went through. And this is the only story i heard from the mouth of the pilot. This is what nightmares are made from.
A professor of mine worked on this project and on the Voyager missions as an engineer. She was such a fascinating person and even her 8am lectures were always full
Actually interestingly enough spies used code that was in the form of emojis to communicate to each other and since the enemies didn't have the code decriptor the enemy would have no way of knowing that the Emojis were secret code
I was watching some of those ancient alien types of RUclips videos, and learned.. umm.. a couple of days ago that the special coating material that was applied on the SR-71 was 'borrowed' from a reverse engineered tech. And, apparently, the same coating material was enhanced and applied to the F-117A Nighthawk. If that was the technology from the 60s, what do we have now? 🤣 By the way, we don't have to call that top secret hypersonic aircraft as Aurora anymore, because the plane was fully revealed recently, and it's now called SR-72. :)
Me: The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird...an advanced long range strategic reconnaissance aircraft capable Mach 3 and an altitude of 85,000 feet!!! My Mom: You seem to know a lot about it. Me: DID YOU EVEN READ MY CHRISTMAS LIST!?
Thank you for recognising the a12 but you could have also mentioned the u2 kinda unrelated but while James may has flown in a u2 Jeremy Clarkson has sat in a blackbird
There’s a variant of the blackbird at Hill Airforce Base’s museum in my home state of Utah. It’s called the YF-12C. Turns out, the plane is much smaller than you think it is. It’s still big, but not much more so than a normal fighter.
You didn't mention how previous pilots used to slow it down when missiles were launched at it just so they could out run them because flying it was so boring being able to out run missiles at top speed without an issue that they wanted to at least feel like they might get hit.
A lot of people in the comment section are pointing out the increasing frequency of war related videos by infographics suggesting that their overdoing it. Well, considering the incomparable effect war will have and has had on the human condition and the very feasibility of our planet’s ability to sustain life, it stands to be argued that perhaps infographics is not posting quite enough videos on war.
Wasnt JP7 developed solely for Sr-71? It was designed this way as it had to be stable at higher temps and not combust/oxidize stuff and was primary heat sink pumped through airframe and back into engines, much like it is done in X-51 where it heat up to 290C before it reach engine/s.
Man they missed a cool roll they did. During Vietnam War POWs were told if a black bird flew over an area and made a multiple sonic boom, you have 48 hours to make it the nearest river bank to be picked up by SEALs. The NVA never knew until after the war thats why they flew low enough to be heard
