      @@robg4729 The lyric has a double meaning, it did refer to that, but its more important meaning refers to bringing a trophy home to the home of football. That's why it's been re released for several tournaments not held in England. Its why fans sing it year after year. You need to see it in the context of the whole song, which is all about the longing of an England fan for success, its not about longing to hold a tournament is it?

    The song was recorded and released in 1996 when England hosted the European Championship Football Tournament- an event that takes place every 4 years. The song makes reference to England winning the Football World Cup in 1966. "Coming home" refers to their positive attitude that England would win the 1996 "Euro's" and bring the Trophy "Home" England being the place where Soccer was developed- so the "home" of soccer. England have not won any tournament since 1966. On the 7th JULY the current England team beat Denmark 2-1 in the Semi Final of the current European Championships underway across a number of European nations. England have now reached a final for the first time since 1966 and will face ITALY in the final which takes place on Sunday July 11th July at Wembley Stadium in London. This record has become a very popular anthem for English football fans over the years and has reached No1 on the UK Official Singles chart several times.

    In 1996 England hosted the European Championship, think The world cup but for European countries only.
    This song was released for it and the line it's coming home has two meanings:
    1. because England was hosting the tournament.
    2. at the time it was generally felt that there was a possibility that we could win because of the squad at the time.
    England got to the last 4 and lost to a penalty shootout after extra-time was added.
    Fun Fact the current England manager Gareth Southgate took the 6th penalty for England and the Goalkeeper saved it whereas the Germans scored their 6th winning the match. Germany won the final as well

    I play trumpet in a brass band, and we've been rehearsing this all week, just in case. Ian Broudie from The Lightening Seeds wrote this as a bittersweet love song to English football. Supporting England means being disappointed most of the time, but this song is also about how we cling onto that bit of hope that maybe the cynics will be proved wrong. For the first time in 24 years, since this song first came out, I'm starting to get emotional listening to it, because we might win.

      football is huge everywhere except America full stop. In Africa football it is everything- check out the African Nations cup. I think most the world says the opposite. I mean the football world cup is biggest event on the planet, most watched and participated (way bigger than the Olympics which is second).

    England is the country in which modern football was invented in around 1850s but their national team has never succeeded much in international tournaments. They won the World Cup in 1966 with a questionable goal and hosted Euro Cup in 1996 when this song was released. It was hoped to be a winner's anthem but England lost the semifinal on penalties. This was particularly traumatizing for the current coach Gareth Southgate who missed the crucial kick. However, England will play on their home field Wembley against Italy this Sunday in Euro Cup final. Many say they got there faking a foul though.

    • @markydh83
      @markydh83 3 года назад

      Many might say that, though some may also say that the Danish goal should have been disallowed as the Danish players were less than a metre from the English wall 😉

      @@markydh83 I believe more people paid attention to Sterling's fall but I give that a benefit of a doubt. There was also a laser light pointed to Schmeichel's face during the penalty. It didn't seem to bother him but worth mentioning.

    • @markydh83
      @markydh83 3 года назад

      @@mikaelpeltonen96 Yes, that was totally unacceptable, though I don’t think he actually noticed. Sterling didn’t dive, mind. He was pushed off balance, but it’s one of those that probably isn’t enough to give a penalty.

    • @mikaelpeltonen96
      @mikaelpeltonen96 3 года назад

      @@markydh83 I didn't see it from all angles but seemed like a normal touch in such situation. Definitely not enough to give a harsh ruling like that given the circumstances. If they had gone to penalties, Denmark could have easily won with a goalie like Schmeichel and knowing England's history with penalties.

    • @markydh83
      @markydh83 3 года назад

      @@mikaelpeltonen96 They could, though I think England would still have won before the end of extra time. At one point during the second half of extra time, they had 54 unanswered passes amongst themselves and they could easily have broken into the box several times during that sequence. The Danes were down to ten men due to injury and were dead on their feet.

    I think people miss the play on the words in this song and think it’s English arrogance that we are going to win. Football’s coming home plays on the fact we created the game and that it was the first major tournament to be held in the country for 30 years.
    I think now we are nearly another 30 years on, that has got lost in the mist of time.

    This is the original 1996 version for Euro 96 which was held in England. There's a 1998 version for the 1998 World Cup with slightly different lyrics - Robbie Williams is in the video . Skinner and Baddiel were popular comedians who hosted a comedy football show called Fantasy Football League in the mid 90s.

    One of the things that's so great about this song is it's coming from the point of view of a frustrated England fan who's pining for the glory days.
    Most England football songs have been about how England are the best and England always wins.
    This song acknowledges that isn't the truth.

  • @carlybishop6160
    @carlybishop6160 3 года назад

    This song is basically our National anthem for football. If you have grown up watching England (and you are over the age of about 20) you will relate to this song. England won the World Cup in 1966 and we haven't won it since. But it is more than that England have always collapsed under the pressure and always have played badly. Hint for the line: "Everyone knows the score, they've seen it all before. England's gonna throw it away". We have had some of the best players in the world and really successful managers and until 2016 we had only reach one World Cup semi-final in 1990 and one Euros semi-final in 1996. So, this song is like our relatable song of hope of being nostalgic and hoping one day we will win a major tournament again as we did invent the game in the first place. Which is why we say "it's coming home".
    I say until 2016 because after losing to Iceland in the Euros in what was known as "the worst defeat in the history of international football for England", we got a new manager who wasn't wanted at the time as he was an ex-England player who had little experience as a Manager and the experience he had was not the best. However, he has completely turned around the team that they are unrecognisable! Within 2 years at his first World Cup with the least experienced team and the second youngest team in the tournament we reached our first World Cup semi-final in 28 years but then went on this year in the 2020/1 Euros to not only get us to our first Euros semi-final since 1996 and first back to back semi-finals since 1968 but also to our first major final since 1966. We lost on penalties which is literally the smallest of margins. Suddenly, the future looks so bright for England.

    In the chorus, ' jules rimet still gleaming' - jules rimet trophy is the name for the football world cup trophy, 1966 was the first and only time England won that. 3 lions is the English emblem (badge) on football shirts, coming home refers to two things, when this came out we were hosting the Euros but also England is the birth place of football but we haven't won a trophy on the world stage for so long now- hope song makes a bit more sense now

    This was released in 1996 and it marked the return of a major international football tournament to England - the first in 30 years (also the last time England won a major international tournament). The hurt didn’t end and now stands at 55 years. But if you want to hear the best England song ever released for a tournament, react to “World in Motion” by New Order, released ahead of the 1990 World Cup.
