I was gifted today a cabinet that I had admired. Low and behold when I looked inside. A beautiful WORKING 201…. Model year is 1938. I am truly grateful. An older sister for my 1940 featherweight.
Fantastic little machine. You simply cannot go wrong using vintage sewing machines. Work horses made to last. I have 2 modern and 5 vintage and always end up using my oldies. So reliable.
I inherited this model from my great grandmother and never knew how to work it. Thank you so much for this tutorial I am so excited to carry this machine down and make pieces with it in modern day! RIP Grandma Bonnie
Probably the best machine Singer ever made. I know it's the most sought after model. It's the first one I pull out for doing survival gear / tactical gear with stacked webbing 1000 d Cordura
I’ve just inherited a 201 from my mum, who received it new on her 21st birthday in 1964. It’s in its own table and I was unsure how to thread it, as I hadn’t used it myself since 1976. I’ve had it overhauled and it’s working perfectly. I love it, just made a padded bag and quilted without any need for a walking foot, the stitch is immaculately even. My mum made all our clothes and my dads shirts on this, I took up jeans and repaired horse rugs. A beautiful machine. A privilege to own. 💖 Thank you for the demo. Very helpful.
Thanks so much for this video! I learned how to sew today on my wife's late Grandmother's Singer 201 (from 1941!). I've never used this (or any other) machine before and I completed my first project (a hammock in 1.6 oz, lightweight diamond grid nylon "Hyper-D). I'm astonished at how smoothly this machine runs. Without this basic video, I was completely lost. Didn't know how to thread the machine, much less load the bobbin. I ran a couple passes on some scrap material and was amazed how well this machine performs. I have some more ambitious projects on the horizon, now! Thanks again
I love the way you backstitches rather than turn the webbing around. I've only thought of using backstitch to secure the beginning and end. I'm just getting to know my 201k 2 which was brought to me yesterday.
Many years ago, my neighbor gave me a 1941 201-2 FOR FREE!!! It is in excellent condition and when I took it in to have it serviced, the tech said it appears to be hardly used. It's beautiful!
So glad I found this site...hope you are still posting in 2019...I have had my aunt's AK series singer machine several years..know so little..I have let it sit alone for past 3 years because although I only do simple straight stitching on it, the machine suddenly lost all tension..personal tragedy caused me to give up for the time being...but now I hope to correct the problem and start enjoying sewing again. There is no longer a local Singer repair center in my area (it closed it's doors just about a year ago) Thankfully every manual and the basic attachments are still in the drawers and I will begin to peruse and acquaint myself with this machine that seems to be quite a treasure..am looking forward to learning something or rediscover the excitement of sewing at home...I am nearly 75 yrs..no one in family is interested..except for me :) Thanks again!
I have a 1938 model 201. It is a beast. I love the machine. I also have a brand new Janome C30, and the 201 is just as smooth and quiet as the Janome. I also own a white's machine in a cabinet. It has a broken bolt on the motor belt tension, and I plan on fixing that really soon. The white's is kind of noisy when it was running. I love that machine also. My 201 is in a plastic travel case, but soon I plan to build a large cabenet for it for the purpose of doing upholstery with it.
I have my mom's 1952 model 201. It's in a mahogany cabinet with a bench seat that comes off to store items in. Hers also has a knee pedal. It's in storage right now. I need to get her out and either service her myself or have it done. The cabinet needs refurbishing too.
Hi Russell I just picked one up from a deceased estate in Gladesville via facebook for $60.00. Keep an eye out there as there’s often a few for sale at the same time.
Love! I just got one as part of a 3-machine deal. $20 for all! However, its been partially parted out. One of the machines is practically a skeleton! So happy that I got lucky with my 201-2 from 1950!
We already have a round 12 machines, but i would love one of these guys. From what i saw it is a super piece of machine, and would make a good addition to the 3 industrials we already have. The problem is where to get one in South Africa, since yardsales/garage-sales are scarce, and buying ons like this from a dealer will cost me an arm and a leg, and i need both for sewing.
Could you tell me please I have just bought the 201K in its own case and the bobbin thread is looping how do I adjust this, thought I would take the easier way out and ask the expert on this beautiful machine also thank you for your very informative video I am addicted to old machines
Great video 👍i just got a my 201-2 its a 1957 model , part of my collection lol , have a 51 featherwright and a shuttle 128 and a 15 91 , only want one more then im done hopefully , a 99k and thats it i swear lol ...
I have a singer EK220728 201 K are you saying that I cannot stick a electric motor on this machine as it is a treadle version it would be great help if you clear this up for me please thank you as I am not able to get used to the treadle set up. Thank you
Is it normal for a strange smell when sewing? My electrics were PAT tested recently but the machine is new to me. V2 201k. I wonder if it is the bakelite warming up? Bakelite is made from fish bone but it doesn't smell like fish.
I just acquired a Singer 201 and I am in need of a top spool pin and mounting foot. It is a 1940 built. Is this something you can help me with? Thank you
Hello! So nice to find your videos! I bought a 201-2 ( looks like the one you have in the video ) people tells me for sure is this one, but it doesn’t have the little plate that say so.my problem is it was neglected ( is running , is cleaned, oiled, etc). But when I try to fill the bobbin , the little wheel sometimes stop and I need to move the lever a little bit , so it can finish filling the bobbin. Do you have a video that help me with this? I will really appreciate it! ( oh the little rubber wheel is the original )
Is there any chance you could help me identify a vintage Singer machine? I'm in Australia, and purchased the machine several years ago from a man who said his mother bought it sometime in the 1950s and used it to sew clothes for the family for years. From the serial number, it's a 201K, but it looks different from the 201Ks I've seen online. It's fully functioning, I think, and it doesn't matter much if I know what it is exactly, but I am thinking of replacing parts of it (power cord might need replacing, and that info might come in handy.) Thanks beforehand, in case you could eyeball a photo or two of it and let me know what you think.
The Singer 201 frustrates me every time I use. Mostly because I seldom use it. So when I pull it out, it's like learning all over again getting the top and bobbin thread set up. More often than not, it takes an hour to get it all sorted out . Always frustrating.
Last summer I picked up a 201-2 with it's original cabinet. Sew Pro's in El Cajon refurbished as It needed new electrical. I have several, very expensive machines. BabyLock, Jenome and Viking. I love to sew with this 1950 Singer 201-2 the most. My question is. The 66 bobbins that I have recently bought seem too tight. The older ones that came with the machine slip in so nicely. Have you had this problem? Same problem with my Singer 99, the new bobbins coming from Singer class 66 bobbins are too tight. Any suggestions or comments from your experience.
Not all 201,s had potted motor. The 201k and 201-1 can be put in a treadle. The 201-2 is the only one with potted motor. I have a 201-4 hand crank USA 1935 - 1957 201-1 Treadle operated 201-2 PH Potted motor with direct gear drive 201-3 BR external motor with belt drive 201-4 Hand cranked UK 1935 - 1962 201K1 Treadle 201K2 PHK potted motor with direct gear drive 201K3 BAK or BZK external motor & belt 201K4 Hank Crank 201K21,23 & 24 1954 - 1962 As 201K1-K4 but with new style aluminium body and solid balance wheel. BAK4 motor with belt drive. Black or beige models 201K29 As 201K23 but with spoked balance wheel Australia 1956 - 19?? 201P Assembled in Australia from parts made in UK
Great videos! I was wondering if you wouldn't mind helping me with a little feedback. I am debating between purchasing one of these 2 machines listed. 201-2 in a cabinet (w/light in front / Rolls Royce) 301 - long bed (wanted the short bed to fit in a cabinet but only found a long bed for sale.) I will be sewing high end women's dresses. I am not a professional sewer, so I'm looking for a machine that is easier to control (slower) for better precision. Stitch quality is very important. And would prefer the machine that is more on the quiet side. Portability would be nice but quality is more important. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you :)
FYI , I have both. I love my 301, and it sounds like a model train. The 201-2 is a dream to drive and purrs like a kitten. I hope this helps. hahaha, no matter which you get, much success to you. With your ambition, and if you want to stay vintage, consider a 401. I have a 221, 201, 201-2, 301a, 404, CG-550, 600, 600e. a160th and a 9960, all set up a little different with lots of various presser feet. "man does not live by lockstitch alone".
you probably have a broken tension spring .. just unscrew the screw at the front and the whole assembly will slide out if the spring is broken get another from any other machine ..there all the same and reasemble// it should then be fine..
I would love to find a 201. I have a 66 and 99k or is it 91k. Using a darning foot on my Bernina 730 Record I punched a needle through a finger nail one time lol. I call the moment S.W.I.
The motor on this 201-2 is surprisingly no quieter than my 201-3. I was thinking the potting would make it quiet. Apparently, the only benefit to the direct drive is no belt. For sewing within the capabilities of this machine I think either machine would work just as well. The direct drive makes things unnecessarily complicated.
I was gifted today a cabinet that I had admired. Low and behold when I looked inside. A beautiful WORKING 201…. Model year is 1938. I am truly grateful. An older sister for my 1940 featherweight.
A fantastic find ❤
Absolutely NOTHING sews a better top stitch than a 201-2. Smooth, quiet, and powerful. Once you sew on one, you'll want your very own.
Fantastic little machine. You simply cannot go wrong using vintage sewing machines. Work horses made to last.
I have 2 modern and 5 vintage and always end up using my oldies. So reliable.

I've got a hand cranked Scottish made 201k, it's a pleasure to just wind the handle and enjoy it's amazingly smooth, virtually silent action.
TR...love you demos...have been tuning in for several years now..!! THANK U

Delightful demo of an incomparable machine!
I just received this machine. Thanks for the very informative video. I can't wait to start sewing
I have a 201-1 it's made to be a handcrank or Treadle. Mine is in an old 66 cabinet and works beautifully. It was built in 1948.
just got a 201-2 and needed to know how to put the thread in the bobbin case. Thank you!
Thanks for your video, I finally got the thread up from the bobbin thanks to you. 😊

Hi, Thank you for the video, how do you evaluate the stitch quality compared to 99k , thank you

Haha! These vintage Singers are irresistible!
Greetings, fellow Oregonians! Recently aquired one of these in trade for some sewing. Love your tutorial & demo ~ very helpful! Thanx!

Are you ever going to come back to RUclips and share some more great videos?
Is it normal for a strange smell when sewing? My electrics were PAT tested recently but the machine is new to me. V2 201k. I wonder if it is the bakelite warming up? Bakelite is made from fish bone but it doesn't smell like fish.
Thank you had my 201 for some time new to sewing this Vid has really helped me set it up and get it going 😊
the bobbin coverage has come off on my machine. do you have any tips to reattach without ruining the grove. thank you
I just acquired a Singer 201 and I am in need of a top spool pin and mounting foot. It is a 1940 built. Is this something you can help me with? Thank you
Is there different stitch settings on this machine?
I'm dying to know what was used to polish this machine!
what i really need to see is how the bobbin catches on the neild, since i can't get mine to do that
what thread do you recommend for this?
My lord, what did you do to this machine? it is wonderful, look at that thing go. I want one!
Also, you're a reall good teacher.

why not show how to lock the lever so foward+ backstitch are the same?

I purchased one of these a year or more ago. never used it. it came in a table. what do you suggest I do before I try using it?
Oil it good
Very likely may also need to remove old grease on the gears and replace with new. Other YT videos show details on this.
Wanted to see the knee arm working
Not all 201,s had potted motor. The 201k and 201-1 can be put in a treadle. The 201-2 is the only one with potted motor. I have a 201-4 hand crank

Thx . Love it ❤

I'm new to all of this, what's the difference between a 201 and a 201-2 ?
I think the - 1 was a treadle powered machine, while the -2 had that direct drive electric motor. No belt.
Thx a lot
Subscribed. I have one just like yours, and love it.
I would love to find a 201. I have a 66 and 99k or is it 91k. Using a darning foot on my Bernina 730 Record I punched a needle through a finger nail one time lol. I call the moment S.W.I.
Ye abhi b milti h...? Price...?
Harga berapa bu bagus banget,sy pengen beli dimana.
The only thing my 201-2 won't sew through is that awful pressed hard plastic that backs toggles.

Year 1953

My singer serial DB says Ilove this app
My machine starts with AH... any idea when it was made?
The Singer website has all that info Mine's an AG and it's a 1941.
AH is a 1947 or 48.
I have a singer hand crank series num F9006879 I can’t find it on the site,I’m thinking 1910, can anyone help please.x
But what model singer is it. The serial number will only tell you the date of manufacture.
@@totalchaos290 mulqueen.com/pages/date-your-singer-sewing-machine
This link will give you manufacture date and model
Not like mine at all mine takes the long bobbins
Then you dont have a 201
Thanks:)!
