Extra trigger pulling! Another great video thanks. Just checking out the manual and I'm gonna say 30 carbine beats 357 mag by a little bit. With less powder.!
Thanks for showing us this handy little rifle Mike. I've seen many Marlins but never knew this one existed. It looks pristine too. I'm liking that old school scope with the flip off mounts as well. A fun gun to shoot for sure.
What a find! I too, like that old Leupold accents this lever action Marlin to a tee, if I owned that Marlin, the scope would remain right where it is. I have wondered why there wasn't a bolt action ( at least ) rifle made more commonly available, in this 30 carbine. Thanks for showing this, Mike.
It is possible to rebore an old small action Brno in say, .222 Remington to .30 Carbine and get it feeding reliably BUT … you have to really really want all that hassle😁!
Agreed on all your points about 30 Carbine. An underappreciated round. I've wanted a Model 62 for a long time, but like you say, they are hard to find and expensive. Great video. Thanks.
Thank you - a friend of mine has a TC Encore in .30 Carbine - what a dream to shoot - I think the barrel is by MGM. He has complete success on ranch troubles with coyotes, rats and other attackers as well as mule deer at the distance of the few yards between his pioneer fence and a pond. Can't argue with success. All the best to you.
Nice rifle. I suppose that the relatively low cost of surplus M1 Carbines make rifles like this one less popular than hoped. When I was young, I didn't like the looks of this style of lever actions, I suppose because it didn't look like the Winchesters in the Westerns. Now I think they are beautiful.
I thought I knew the models and calibers but that's a new one for me. Curious choice for use, not a great hunting round. I could see it on the farm back in the day, fewer large varmints, and not as loud. I could see it was fun to shoot, nice.
Mike I have owned two of these. one was checkered and had flush inletted bottom metal, nice touch. Quality was excellent as one would expect from marlin. This rifle was also introduced in 256 win. mag. and 218 bee or 22 jet I think. Thus the magazine worked with rimmed cartrages. I agree with most that the 110 grain bullet from the 30 carbine is a bit light for deer and if this were available in 357 mag. it would have been an honest deer rifle for hunting in the North East. The microgroove rifling was never going to win any prizes on the target range and with cast bullets really didn't deliver the goods. I'm sure some will argue with me on that score. The short stroke lever action seemed like a good idea but was never as smooth as the M94 for instance. The M62 was attractive to the eye as one would expect from Marlin. When the were giving 30 carbine ammo away this rifle made a lot of sense but now the opportunity has passed
An M62 in .30 carbine was my first new rifle, my father giving it to me as a Christmas gift. He was a fan of the .30 carbine cartridge and most importantly reloaded it, making my ammo cost zero. Through high school and college it was my do everything rifle, from ground hogs to whitetails.....of course other than for a Swiss 1911 carbine chambered in 7.5mm unattainium, it was my only rifle. In the dense second growth woods where I lived, a long shot was 50 yards and the .30 carbine is more than capable of doing business at that range. The main problem with its lack of popularity was that it was born in an era when most people bought firearms for a specific purpose....not for its gee whizz attraction. While I used it for whatever came along, the reality is that the only thing it did well was to use low cost ammo. Once I completed my build of a Mauser 98 in .308, the M62 was retired to the back of the rack, where it remains today. In this era when many if not most owners have more firearms than fingers and toes, the M62 fits into the gee whizz fun and cheap to shoot niche, and likely would sell much better today than it did when new. The last time I used it was in the 1980s to provide terminal lead poisoning to some destructive beavers on my pond. Again, not really the right rifle for the job....but was the one at hand.
I have had one of these rifles for many years. In the 1970"s they went begging on the used gun rack at many of the shops I frequented. Too low powered for deer and not accurate enough for long range varmints. I saw a number of them with badly pitted barrels due to a glut of cheap surplus corrosive .30 carbine ammo from central america. I have some old gun digests that showed them to be available in .357 magnum and .22 Remington Jet. I don't think they were produced. The only ones I ever saw were in .30 carbine and .256 Winchester. I used mine occasionally for close range coyote hunting. The 110 grain soft points drops them in their tracks. I love the ultra short lever throw. Supposedly Marlin bought the patent rights to this system from the defunct Kessler firearms company when their lever action shotguns didn't sell very well. I also have the Marlin 56 and 57M in .22 magnum. I really like the whole levermatic series and would love to see them brought back into production.
My first deer rifle was a 30 caliber Marlin Lever action. Couldn't tell you the model, this was around the late 70's. Found it at a gun show with a 3 to 9 variable scope
Love it! Picked on up in 22 long rifle 2 years back for $200 here in Redding ca. the lock up is so solid!!I I have been looking for the 30 carbine or 22 mag. I first saw one of those about 30 years ago at a gun show. It was rough, but planted a seed in my mind that I'd one day own one if the right one came along. Fast forward about 10 years ago and one came into the gun shop I work at. Needless to say, it never made it to the rack. I haven't shot it a lot, but want to point it at a doe one day. I think it would be a perfect little gun for javelina or a treed cougar, not that we have either in S.C. ...

That's a beautiful gun, it reminds me of the Marlin model 56 levermatic in .22lr my grandfather gave me when I was a young boy. That thing was super fast and smooth 👍
I'm familiar with the savage 99 and Winchester 88. This I have never seen a 62 marlin or even was aware marlin made this rifle . I do agree 30 carbine is a fun shoot. In rifles and pistols. Interesting lever action. I have a Ruger Blackhawk in 30Carbine, packs quite a punch. I agree that it can be an effective round within the 100 yard distance. As regards lever actions, well, I am still getting to like them, but must admit that after a semi auto, they are the fastest cycling firearms, perhaps faster than a straight pull.
Have you ever owned or done a video with one? I have always wanted one for the Michigan deer woods. Very hard to find around here. Never have seen a used one come up for sale.
In Florida that caliber is legal on deer and it would be fine on smaller size deer I presume. I've never seen or heard of that particular find. It would be nice to stumble across one. Interesting.
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I see them on GunBroker once in a while. But they are pretty rare. It's a shame the .30 carbine did not get used by more guns. Scope is mounted on backwards. Should tip off the other direction. Interferes with your empties flying out. I know. I have tip off on all my scoped rifles.
.30 carbine is a sort of militarized .32 winchester self loading, so it really has alomost a century and a quarter of history. For utilitarian sporting use it kind of falls between niches, which probably explains why it never became a popular sporting round here in the states. Not quite a deer round, a bit too destructive for fur bearers or stewpot bunnies. I could see it as a good all around "stockman's rifle" to keep predators at bay, but the lack of busting bucks would kind of limit market appeal as the "truck gun", while a .30-30 class holepunch could cover all it does, and more.
Next time someone askes why that old scope is on there. Tell them cause its period correct. Yes my grandfathers mauser that he and his father in law sporterized in the 60s, "his father in law was a gun smith" has a blued steel weever instead of a matte aluminum scope of today! Would a lighter scope be better yes! But it would not be period correct and and just belongs on this old rifle! A rifle from 1908 to 1912 should it really have a brand new scope from 2023. I think that kinda kills the vibe!
I had one in 22 jet. ,cool guns, terrible trigger geometry like the Savage 99. They also made it in .256 win mag. I have never seen one in .357, I would have bought it ,lol. I have several vintage scopes . That one you have is a Bushnell, not a Leupold if I'm not mistaken. They made the Scopechief in several variables also as well as a 3/4 rimfire version.
Hi … I liked your gun room new setup and I made my gun room in same pattern but having problem in finding the slat wall panels hooks.. I will appreciate if you please send me the store information so I can order…. Thank you …. Ifzal Rana
That rifle is rare. It looks like a Savage 99 and a Winchester 88 had a baby. God bless you for not tearing the sights off.

They always have to discontinue the cool ones probably because of manufacturing cost with not a lot of profit margin just like my Deerfield 44 mag
Your Deerfield became an instant gold bar - good on you. Everyone looking for one - no one finding.
.30 carbine is a sort of militarized .32 winchester self loading, so it really has alomost a century and a quarter of history.
Fair comment; it's not the most powerful round for sure.
30 super carry old French long renamed is similar to 30 carbine
It 'is' just fine :-)
I have it's two little brothers M 56 and a M 57 such grate 22 and 22 mag hard to find even a good one of those ! Sale to me please please !
didnt they make one in 256 mag?
Next time someone askes why that old scope is on there. Tell them cause its period correct. Yes my grandfathers mauser that he and his father in law sporterized in the 60s, "his father in law was a gun smith" has a blued steel weever instead of a matte aluminum scope of today! Would a lighter scope be better yes! But it would not be period correct and and just belongs on this old rifle! A rifle from 1908 to 1912 should it really have a brand new scope from 2023. I think that kinda kills the vibe!
That's a perfect message - thank you.
❤❤
Thank you!
That Jet of yours is super scarce; one of the most interesting and interesting looking cartridges ever.
