ABOUT
Hack Music Theory is the pioneering notation-free method for making great music. Taught by award-winning music lecturer Ray Harmony, and his protégé (and wife) Kate Harmony, from their studio in Vancouver BC, Canada. Ray is the author of critically-acclaimed book series "Hack Music Theory", and has made music with Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), Ihsahn (Emperor), Kool Keith (Ultramagnetic MCs), Madchild (Swollen Members), and many more. Kate has the highest grade distinction in Popular Music Theory from the London College of Music, and is the only person on the planet who's been trained by Ray to teach his Hack Music Theory method!

Aww, Nano, you're too kind, we really appreciate your support! Thanks for watching and connecting, it means a lot to us. We're glad to have you along for the ride and look forward to hearing from you again. Until then, take care and happy songwriting! Kate :)
Thank you Ray and Kate for featuring Throwing Words. Working with you and Jessie was rewarding in so many ways. Reviewing the theory on the song brings back fond memories of its genesis. I truly appreciate every moment working on this with such a brilliant and inspirational team.
Aww, it is and was our absolute pleasure LLL! The song goes round and round in my head almost every day. I'll be humming something and then stop to think about what it is...and it usually turns out to be some melody from Throwing Words! We're so excited to send this song baby out into the world very soon :D Hope you are well and having a lovely spring! Kate :)
Seriously, your videos are awesome! Thank you some much! Nice riff BTW
Yay, we're super happy you're enjoying our videos, Renan! Thanks for taking the time to watch and connect, we're deeply grateful to you. Until next time, happy songwriting!
thanks.. I'm enlightened... please continue to show us the way to great music
You guys are awesome - the real deal! Your passion comes across, and your generosity is icing on the cake!
Aww thank you so much, you're very kind! Last time we spoke you were diggin' into the Hack Music Theory books and PDFs. How are you getting on? Have you started using the hacks to make music? Hope you're having a great week! Take care and talk soon. Kate :)
That's correct - I'm (even more) impressed! I made it through 12 Music Theory Hacks, ready to dive into Hack Music Theory, Part 1, then Hack Music Theory for Songwriting & Producing - but am *really* looking forward to joining the apprenticeship, probably this summer! I'm a lifelong amatuer musician, eager to bump my game up to 'real' musician lol! I've spent way too many years 'settling' for 'same old' limited musicianship, and you guys have given me the bump - right stuff at the right time - to move ahead!
Woohoo!! We're pumped to hear that you're taking your musicianship to the next level, that's really exciting and we're thrilled to accompany you on your journey! You're on the right path and we're cheering you on 100%! Have an awesome weekend and talk soon, Kate :)
This is so useful for me right now. It's just my riffs at the moment are in stalemate. They sound the same. This really brings new ideas and hope on improving! Busy life, haven't checked all of the videos recently, but going to. You do amazing job! :)
Hi Janis, great to hear from you! We're so happy to hear you'll be able to use these hacks to enliven your riffs. I know you saw one of last month's videos where we focused on riffs, but just in case, here's the playlist and hopefully it'll give you a few more riff hacks: ruclips.net/p/PLgYcaQlDpHN4RhuiP--YZ-5tGQsegTSob. I hope you have a wonderful week and until next time, happy riff writing! Kate :)
Both of your cherubic facial expressions uplift viewers' mood btw =))
Aww, you're very kind Alex! We wish you an awesome week full of music!
ps. we could use some of that LA heat/sunshine... wanna send some up here?!
I probably will, in the future... through my music, thanks to folks like you =)))
So cool! That question about how you see powerchords in a riff was in my mind since I discovered this awesome channel. What about a guitar riff that doubles the base guitar like in a typical Rage Against The Machine song?
We're super happy you're enjoying our channel, Funkrocker81! Thanks big time for taking the time to watch and connect, and until next time have a wonderful weekend! Kate :)
Thanks for inspire me always with new videos, very helpfull!!!! Thank you, youre great people!
Aww thanks Cytasis! We're so happy that you're finding our hacks helpful :) What kind of music do you make and where are you based? Have a wonderful weekend!! Kate :)
thank you both for your music lessons, I guess what I have learned from you guys is even more than what I´ve learned on my own during years. One day I will take one of your APPRENTICESHIP,,, thats for sure! : )
Hey RAFO, thanks so much for watching and connecting! It always makes us happy to know that our hacks are helping musicians! On that note, what kinda music do you make?
We're pumped to welcome you into our Hack Music Theory revolution and we'd be thrilled to have you join our Apprenticeship! Please do let me know if you have any questions about it. Until next time, take care and happy songwriting!! Kate :)
Thanks! Really love that melody and really digging that Swing/Shuffle on it!
Yay! Super happy you're diggin' the new tune HAZARDOUS88 :D
Have an awesome weekend!
Following on from the 'Call and Response' technique that I mentioned about last week, I've thought of a great one for you. The rhythm is the syllables of the words. Here we go:
Kate: Would you like a cup of tea?
Ray: What did you say?
Kate: I said would you like a cup of tea?
Ray: Yes, thank you very much!
This, at a smaller scale of course, what we called "devellopement contrapontique" in french ; one of my favourite techniques ever to write overlapping melodies
Bonjour Louis! So wonderful to hear from you :) When you signed up for our free hacks book we put you on our mailing list, and we send the lovely people on our mailing list early access to our RUclips videos! I'm happy it makes you happy :) Have a wonderful week! Kate :)

The riff is soooooooo good!

I am really benefiting with all your videos and books thanks for the help
Great to hear from you again Jojimer! We are so excited to hear you're learning lots from our videos and books! What kind of music do you make? Until next time, have a great week! Kate :)
Hack Music Theory Hi Kate Harmony :) I'm glad that you always responded, I love a love a lots of genres but my first love was Hard Rock, Blues and Jazz
Thank you for sharing!
Wait a minute, I'm confused! How on earth can you possibly lay down a killer riff without stating the obvious, "but first tea"?
Haha Diego, it's great to hear from you!!! Hope you've been having a wonderful 2018 so far :) How's your music making these days?! K
thanks for asking, K! :) My musical muse is exploring modes. Mixolydian still sounds like I can't decide where the melody should land. My cat is a Dorian fan so I've been working on that. But I'm not sure if the mode puts him into a mellow state or he's just falling asleep.
Haha, that's wonderful Diego, thanks so much for sharing! I can totally picture your cat loving Dorian, it's such a cat mode. I think Mixolydian is more of a dog mode, or perhaps Lydian :) By the way, what's your cat's name? Oh, and how's the hurdy-gurdy playing going?
James, my son picked it. Wow thanks for asking about the gurdy. It's going slow. I live in a apartment and it's kinda hard to practice because it's a little loud. But I'm moving to find a place I can get into it. It's very nice of you to remember and ask, thanks! Of course we're all wanting to know about plans for a minor harmony.
Hey Diego! Super excited to hear that you'll soon have a space to have fun with the gurdy! As for a minor harmony... this Hack Music Theory revolution and our music are the legacy and creation we'll be leaving behind :) Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Kate
K & R hope you don't mind my jamming along with you on this; I tried a declension off you inclension and I caught a cool dorian breeze; keep'em coming! Peace & Love ~ J ~
Hey Jaye, so great to hear from you again! We're happy to have you jammin' along with us :) By the way, where are you based? Hope you are well, and we wish you a great week teaching music! Kate :)
Hey guys, Jaye from tidewater Virginia; I appreciate your tireless commitment to the theory of great music; I gig and teach a few to help pay the bills & keep up my equipment and writing ventures. I am a vocalist and guitar/bass player (as needed) and I use my keyboards for writing in my small studio; will always be willing to teach inquiring spirits to give back what was given to me but my heart is in writing & performing; I hope to have some new stuff out there as soon as we are finished tweaking (the age old "when is enough...enough?") Love your work, hit me up w/contact info & friend on FBook? - Peace & Love ~ J ~
Thanks so much for sharing Jaye! We totally understand about finding the balance between teaching, creating and performing. And you're right, when is enough enough? You've probably seen this Da Vinci quote: “Art is never finished, only abandoned.” Ray believes there's a very clear line that songs' cross and once over, they are complete. On that note, if you're interested in getting inside insight on Ray's workflow, you may really enjoy the Apprenticeship course (www.RevolutionHarmony.com/Apprenticeship). As a music teacher, you'll know the theory, but the creative application of it, including the workflow from start to finish, will be interesting. We wish you all the best in your music making, performing and teaching! We're very happy to welcome you to our hack music theory revolution! Have a wonderful week, Jaye :) Kate
Sounds cool. Big ups !!
Merci Philou!! We hope you are having a lovely spring filled with music making...and tea :D

yes, all is well here!
Thanks very much for making this video and for all tutorial videos you have made. They are awesome INFORMATIVE. I couldn't systemize my knowledge until I watch your channel and read your "song writing" book. Can you make tutorial about tips to work with kick and snare?
Aw thanks for watching and connecting, Vu Hoang Quan Peter, you're very kind! It always makes us happy to know that our hacks are helping musicians! On that note, what kinda music do you make? As for drum hacks, you'll find lots of those in our Hack Drums playlist (ruclips.net/p/PLgYcaQlDpHN4ajXZ-dj8V9sosiTXVxwO_). Until next time, take care and happy songwriting! Kate :)
I work mostly with Rap, R&B. I found your videos about drums and they are amazing, even better than my expectation. I love the way you make the videos, short and really practical. Can you make a video that focus on writing bridge melodies?
Thanks for sharing Vu Hoang Quan Peter! Super happy that you found our drum videos helpful :D
As for bridge melodies, you can use any of our melody hacks, which you can find in this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLgYcaQlDpHN5-tLZyRc33FJfmsoU5WBjQ
Also, if you want more in-depth hacks for writing a bridge section check out our Apprenticeship course. The course consists of 17 hours of unedited video which captures every second of the songwriting process, from blank screen to finished song, while also teaching every step (and theory hack!) along the way. You'll learn how to become what we refer to as a "song-whisperer", and effortlessly make new sections (including a bridge), transition between sections, and complete your songs! You'll also gain access to our Apprentice Network where you can share new music, get feedback, ask questions, and collaborate with fellow apprentices. If this sounds like it may be helpful to you, you can find more the details here: www.RevolutionHarmony.com/Apprenticeship.
Thanks big time for your interest in Hack Music Theory! Until next time, have a great weekend! Kate :)
Thanks for your reply. It helps me a lot, just like "Light in tunnel" :). I'm struggling with my music right now. Maybe will join your course in near future!
I'm happy that was helpful to you, Vu Hoang Quan Peter. I'm so sorry to hear that you're struggling with your music at the moment, that can be frustrating and disheartening. I'm really glad to hear you're considering joining the Apprenticeship, I know it will be a guide to you and your music. We'd be honoured to have you and there's loads of support in the Network! All the best to you, and have a wonderful week! Kate :)
