- "The Broadway Melody", also known as "The Broadway Melody of 1929", is a 1929 American pre-Code musical film and the first sound film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. It was one of the early musicals to feature a Technicolor sequence, which sparked the trend of color being used in a flurry of musicals that would hit the screens in 1929-1930.
Today, the Technicolor sequence survives only in black and white. The film was the first musical released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and was Hollywood's first all-talking musical.

I love the first one, really Anglo-American, whereas the second one brings immediately a continental air. Some big hall with an echo was reserved this time for Dajos Bela group of musicians and a singer. Still, the Shilkret approach seems to me to be more authentic in such a style and such a number.
Yes, it is clear to hear that Dajos Bela made the recording in a large room and that is why it is fun and interesting to compare both recordings ! Thank you Jurku !
Thank you so much for these two fabulous versions of a very famous melody! Nat Shilkret was an outstanding bandleader, known for his particularly rich and refined orchestral arrangements and performances, and this one is no exception :-) The vocal quartet (which I am hearing for the first time) was so smooth and elegant too. Dajos Béla's more clasically flavoured style, featuring prominent strings, is radically different, but so utterly refined as well. Besides, the latter instrumental arrangement is delightfully energetic and fresh, whereas Rex Allen's vocal (partly in parlando style) was very enjoyable too. I loved this!
