  • Not many people seem to know about the Blackberry Playbook released in 2011, and as someone who used to get a lot of usage out of one, I felt like sharing my thoughts on the device.

What's annoying is the Playbook is actually a fantastic device.
I wish Blackberry would unlock the software so we could put a more useful OS on it.

      a) BlackBerry 10 is based on QNX, not Linux, and hence only runs Android apps through an emulation layer.
      b) A BlackBerry 10 based version of PlayBook OS was never officially released for the PlayBook.

@@surya_0x0 I bought two 64gb models of these around 5 years ago for dirt cheap to use as in car media players for the kids. This inbuilt speakers where fantastic compared to all the other tablets around at the time. Sadly the lack of RUclips, netflix and Amazon Music and the arival of cheap Amazon fire devices with decent (ish) speakers killed these off about a year ago.
Great hardware let down by poor software support.

Honestly I thought (and still think) the Zune was great. It's what got me really interested in technology in the first place. I had the original Zune in brown (which I still think was the best color) and then I got the next version Zune that was thinner and had the touch sensitive squirkle. Might try to find one on eBay just to relive the good old days.

I used a Playbook throughout most of my graduate work at the university I went to, picked up a 32 GB model in 2012 for 199 dollars at the Best Buy I worked at. Paired with the leather(?) keyboard case, it was a comfortable, portable way to take notes in class in DocsToGo, surf the Internet, and watch videos.
I love my iPad now, but I do still miss some aspects of the Playbook OS, especially the smooth gestures the interface supported.
I also tried to get an HP TouchPad when they went on fire sale for 99 dollars, but by the time I came in for my shift that day...my store was all sold out of them. Ah failed tech paths, always an interesting study.
    Great video!

I had a Blackberry tablet. December of 2015, I NEEDED a tablet that was Flash compatible, & it was the only option. The browser crashed frequently, the app store was a sad joke, the wifi reception was like surfing the net in 1998, & it was heavy enough that it could break your toe if you dropped it on your foot. Thankfully I got it for $150. Then a year & a half latter, they stopped releasing security updates for it & it's just used to store recipes in the kitchen.

    • @ThatOneSeong
      @ThatOneSeong 7 лет назад +8

Very few browsers could use it. And by the time it came out, HTML5 was becoming a bigger standard and Flash was dying. So, even fewer apps aspired to support it.
Chrome didn't, Firefox didn't, the built-in browser didn't do it well... it was a mess.

I remember seeing a RUclips tech reviewer reviewing the playbook when it came out... I was very impressed with it to the point where I actually considered buying one. Android tablets were still in the "cheap iPad ripoff" phase that came before Google updates the OS to be properly tablet friendly, and the iPad was just too expensive.
As a device, it's incredibly well put together with great software. In another universe, BlackBerry (or RIM as they were known then) would have supported android earlier and be rivalling Samsung today, because many of their devices were user friendly and innovative

Yeah I dug mine out recently out to and took a trip down memory lane. All the apps still work the camera is great and there's some nice blackberry only 3-D games on there, but the browser is painfully slow, and you can't use any Communications apps like Voxer or TextNow which makes the unit kind of worthless. My main tablet today is an iPad air 2 and looking at the BlackBerry compared to my iPad it's painfully apparent why the BlackBerry flopped as badly as it did. But still a nice trip down memory lane and funder for the occasional 3-D blackberry only games

The biggest problem with the Playbook is it didn’t support Blackberry’s secure email platform. Think about that, BlackBerry’s single most important feature for businesses wasn’t available natively on their own tablet device. You needed to bridge it to your blackberry phone and manually transfer email. Further, the bridge app was a huge power drain so you couldn’t just leave it running so that your Playbook could mimic ‘live’ email. I’m still stunned at the swiftness of their fall. They went from dominant to gone in less than three years. They almost took Verizon with them.

I got rid of it a year later but to this day still appreciate the build quality, aside from the micro USB port with its high failure rate as mine broke, and the hard to press power button. The gesture system was excellent and integrating it in the bezels was a great idea at the time when bezels were still a given on any tablet. I still think the multitasking is the best I've ever experienced and offered the closest thing you can get to true multitasking running in real-time in separate windows.

We had 3 Playbooks in our household back in the day. They were actually pretty good, apart from being a bit heavy. Very robust and solid. All the apps paired with your main Blackberry phone. My son still has his and occasionally watches movies on it. The OS is still very quick and fluid to this day.

I still have my Blackberry Playbook 64GB wifi model. Was hoping a 3G model was going to be released soon after this wifi only model. I used it back then paired up with my Blackberry Bold 9900 (Broke over 3 years ago, screen damage). The Playbook still going strong. Using it as a media player for my movies and music.

All it needed in the end was for Blackberry to open the boot loader so Android could be installed proper. The built in Android emulator worked for many applications, but was only v2.1 and didn't have access to the hardware like GPS if I remember rightly. I still have mine knocking around somewhere (probably failed battery now) and I loved it for work use and media (good stereo speakers) especially when it only cost me something like £80 by the time I bought it.

A small note on development; the Developer Program did the best it could to enlist and attract developers, but their biggest mistake (maybe), was that while they were going to provide the Cascades Framework for PlayBook apps, they instead pulled that pretty early, and reserved it only for BlackBerry 10 apps.
So, you essentially had to write your own windowing system and widgets for your PlayBook apps, or use Adobe's ActionScript, which, while easy to use, still had a performance hit.
Cascades was a very delightful Framework in which to develop apps with, but only targetting BlackBerry 10 was the PlayBooks downfall, in my opinion.

It is still useful in 2017, 2018 and forward as the tablet will not suffer from becoming slow, the OS will be responsive on that tablet, while it does not have that great app library, you can get the latest blackberry app store and the amazon app store (has steam), and you can use the tablet to watch sd card videos, your audio files, and view pictures on the tablet. It can edit documents and the browser is actually very good. I am currently using the blackberry passport phone as my phone, but I don't know about if the tablet get blackberry 10.3 OS or above or not.

All gesture based , two cameras , Bluetooth , GPS , front facing speakers , multi touch display , HDMI out , True multitasking , dual Wifi bands and some of the best sound I've ever heard from a tablet. Not only did it have a boat load of features , but you could link it with your Blackberry phone and use them in tandem. Blackberry Playbook was also one of the few places you could play Starfront Collision , a very impressive StarCraft type game. Sad that none of the amazing games it had can no longer be bought, like Dead Space , NFL Football , Need for Speed , ShadowGun ,
Amiga Games , Gameloft Games , Activision , Marmalade Play and so many more. Just like the Blackberry phones had exclusive games like The Simpsons Arcade game so did the Playbook , at the time it had several of them , but I will leave that little tid bit for you to figure out. One last thing about the Playbook is every single game can be played offline unlike today's games where you need internet all the time. Well there is my two cents, lol

I loved the Blackberry PlayBook. I still have mine and even got the rapid charger for it. The speakers on the PlayBook are very loud compared to other portable devices, which was great for video playback. I had the HDMI cable to hook up to my TV and even watched HBO on my TV using the PlayBook. So sad that it was a failure though, but even now, I could still recommend it to someone that wants a web browsing device for cheap. Even if its just for a media player, you can't go wrong with a 64GB tablet for about $50

  • @LeePhillipsLive
    @LeePhillipsLive 6 лет назад

Even though the Playbook is considered dead, it does have some awesome factors which make it an ideal choice to buy. For instance, the overall build quality of the device is simple, sleek and robust (It's how a tablet should really look and feel).
It holds a professional integrity while including great screen quality, speakers, and a not too shabby camera which if used in a good lit environment, would produce great recorded videos. also, the best feature on this device is in fact the microphone.. or microphones. Yep, this has stereo microphone recording and the quality is crystal clear. If you produce content and want a very high quality voice-over, use the playbook voice recorder, it won't let you down.
Now yes, the apps are severely limited, and with the Blackberry world no longer continuing paid applications for the playbook (Like anyone would care, their prices were abysmal anyway), it was on a roll of being buried into its grave. But there are still some gems on there that did surprise me. Apps like DosBox and ScummVM are still on there and they work relatively well and if you look hard enough, you may find more apps than you think.
With built in dual band WiFi, Bluetooth, native support for SMB protocol (Windows File Share) and even data encryption, this also justified my purchase of additional playbooks since they are cheap and really useful.
However, the true drawback of this device was transfer speed. Holy Sh*t was it slow! We're talking between 1 to 5 Megabytes per second on USB, and transferring over a WiFi network was not much different. The playbook also requires proprietary software known as Blackberry Desktop, and with USB that mounts the device as a network drive which was clunky to set up.
Another disadvantage was the start-up times. Let's just say you're gonna be waiting for about 3 to 5 minutes for it to be turned on from cold boot. Yeah...
Even though the device does come with encryption, enabling it will actually reduce performance causing apps like the camera's video recording to stutter and possibly a slowdown in overall transfer performace. Best keep encryption disabled unless you have some REAL secretive shit (lol).
On a final note: here is some very important advice: If you are going to consider resetting your playbook then keep this in mind: Resetting will REMOVE updates and cause your playbook to go into a state where it will require activation from RIM servers. One day they will discontinue these servers meaning the playbook will literally turn into a paperweight as it will be stuck on the setup screen. At the moment, it is online but once you have activated and set it up, BACK UP with Blackberry Desktop, then you can restore it that way in future.
But these are my points, I have to say that it is still worth it considering that CeX in the UK sell the 64GB models for as low as £20. Not bad.
    Awesome video btw.

The Playbooks OS gesture control wa sage as if it’s time which is exaggerated by the iPhone X’s gesture control which is a pull up and hold to get to multitask
And although it’s been phased out the 3D Touch from the left over which is like there swipe to side, but the iPad has gestures too which I don’t even remember because I haven’t played in so long

I have one and despite the lack of apps, I still use mine to watch movies and series at home or at a plane, or when I'm presenting slides at the office, the HDMI out is very useful and even after all this time the battery life is amazing compared to modern tablets. my problem with it is the external button layout, where the power button is harder to press than the media buttons. but with just a few firmware hacks, you can remap those buttons
