Of all the tablets on the market even now in 2021, "Playbook" is the absolute best name IMHO. iPad. Surface. Tab. They're all 2nd tier names in my oponion. Too bad this one never went further than it did. If it comes back, I'll be buying.
STEVE...help - I missed the server update and the tablet has been reset and now I cannot get passed the ID agreement / Country screen.........is all lost now?
From what I understand, yes, hold onto it though. Maybe someone has/will find a way around it. But from what I know, the device will be locked now because of that.
Great video! I still use mine when travelling to watch movies and have always loved the swipe gestures. You're absolutely right about booting it up every now and then!
Yeah, definitely! Let them sit too long and they corrupt it would seem. But still awesome to use for those things...the build quality was fantastic! Thanks for watching!
Playbook speakers & audio were very good for the form factor. It's a decent iPod for a bedside table or kitchen counter. Boot time was horrible though.
Definitely, it's one you boot up and then go do something else for a bit and come back and hope it's ready. Yeah, stereo speakers, nice screen, definitely still works for media! Nice little piece of hardware. Thanks for watching!

I only shut it down for good when RIM announced they were working on a new OS but Playbook would not be receiving any more updates. I bought an Android and recycled my PB.

Is it possible to install Android-based apps and games on it today? Or use it as a mini server of some kind or as a monitoring tool with display? (e.g. OPNsense or pfSense)
It was a PLAYBOOK - it was a BOOK for work, it was a PLAY device for well, play - PlayBook. It was never just a work device. It beat the early ipad in lots of areas. A playbook was for media consumption just as well. Far far farrr better than Android tablets, video and audio quality, and different enough from the ipad. - like multitasking. Ahh standalone email could be done through the browser, before they got the standalone version. Save the Blackberry Apps!!! Scribbles, kobo books, Plunk!, Chess, Tetris, Pew Pew, TunnelTilt, TileBreaker, Asphalt6.... ....
Hi Steve, If I powered the playbook on today for the first time in ten years today. The home screen does eventually turn back on, but there's a red battery icon with a lightning bolt in it. The device can't find a WiFi network automagically or when I try to manually setup the wifi. It will play stored videos. I can't get it to connect to WiFi. Can this device be updated? Thanks for your time, Steve.
It can't be updated. Also, don't try to reset it, the BlackBerry servers are down for good and your PlayBook will get stuck at the server connection screen. It will become a brick. If you don't update it, it will work as is but if you uninstall any app, you won't be able to restore it.

2nd jan. just turned my device on. but it is stuck on "unable to display agreement...." does anyone have any idea how i can crack device to install linux or android on my playbook?
Unfortunately, that's not going to be possible. From what I understand, the QNX security is still used to some degree on the software they put in cars so they don't have cracking or unlocking for it.
Got mine out the drawer earlier and it booted up without problem, startup takes a while still though still a great device after all these years using it with my 9900 & bridge app
Yes! The boot up can take quite a while. Mine got stuck on the boot repeatedly for hours so I had to reset it. Fun to use with the bridge for sure. Thanks for watching!
I had to download the desktop software from blackberry.com.and hook it up. That way you can reinstall and if something else isn't broken you should be ok!
my playbook is sitting in a closet, i got it in 2011 and it was a nice device. i said on crackberry i wish i could have a phone htat big. people thought i was crazy. now look at phone screen sizes.
Dig that thing out! And very true. Adding that screen size to the Blackberry was awesome. Could give your eyes a rest on a bigger screen and still text! Thanks for watching!
You can't make new apps because BB turned down all the servers, including the software signing servers, so developers even if they make new apps, they can't sign the apps and the PlayBook is closed software and you can't install un-signed apps.
Yeah, I hear you. The problem, as I understand it, is that they are still using the QNX architecture on their current software products so they would be less likely to open that up...would give us too much information. A shame but a tough spot. Thanks!

I am having difficulty getting past the country page after a reset.
That's because the servers are now shut down. If you didn't reset without a BB ID before January 4th of this year, it's a coaster.
@@StevealiciousTech so there is absolutely nothing to do with the playbook but use as a coaster? I didnt use it anyway. Thanks.
Why they shutting down
I have mine with me charging but it's not turning on!!! What should I do?
I had to download the desktop software from blackberry.com.and hook it up. That way you can reinstall and if something else isn't broken you should be ok!
@@StevealiciousTech thank you
my playbook is sitting in a closet, i got it in 2011 and it was a nice device. i said on crackberry i wish i could have a phone htat big. people thought i was crazy. now look at phone screen sizes.
Dig that thing out! And very true. Adding that screen size to the Blackberry was awesome. Could give your eyes a rest on a bigger screen and still text! Thanks for watching!
Mine even has the leather portfolio case.
this aged bad
Why? We literally talk about the shut down and how to preserve your Playbook if you like it after services ended.
People need to make off market apps just for blackberry to sideload now is the time
Unfortunately, because of the locked system that BB had, that's not going to be possible.
You can't make new apps because BB turned down all the servers, including the software signing servers, so developers even if they make new apps, they can't sign the apps and the PlayBook is closed software and you can't install un-signed apps.
Is there no way to install another operating system?
No, unfortunately not!
Can you run Plex on this?
what about using it as a web cam? is that possible?
That I don’t know! I guess possibly using the hdmi out? Because the wifi won’t work as I understand it. Thanks!
What annoyed me was the fact that blackberry won't allow us to unlock it and load android. But Nooooooooooo lol
Yeah, I hear you. The problem, as I understand it, is that they are still using the QNX architecture on their current software products so they would be less likely to open that up...would give us too much information. A shame but a tough spot. Thanks!
@@StevealiciousTech Agreed! But I'm sure someone... somewhere... can figure this out. Lol People have hacked into NASA, govs and banks. C'mon guys. Where's my Russian hackers at? 😂
how doyou update this notebook ?
You have to download BlackBerry desktop from their site to your computer and then plug in the Playbook
Sir I have blackberry playbook and can I do a little gaming in it
Sure the games that worked for it back then should work fine and you can even still access the store. Thanks!
Can ya tell me how can I download android on this?
Unfortunately, you can't. Sorry.
Ya no me sirve ni para cargarle archivos
I still use mine for photos-great and as an e-reader. Worry if it is still safe to use>
For that it should be just fine to use! No worries at all!
Just out of curiosity, do you still have it connected to the internet? If so, do you get asked to sign in every few minutes?
@@chandlerbing7570 yes, very annoying thing they put in place thinking they'll have their servers up for the next 100 years
Can we play codm in this?
Haha, unfortunately not.
Aw i wanna power mine up but i dont have a passport :(
Don't have a Passport or a Playbook? You don't need a Passport to power it up and get it running again! Thanks!
Can we play pubg in it?
I wish! Haha, no, unfortunately, no PubG.
Failure but cool.
Yeah, a shame...I think misunderstood for the most part...unfortunate it was compared to the iPad...but if you were a BlackBerry user, great stuff! Thanks!
@@StevealiciousTech I love the phones, only if Android was the option they would have lasted a few years longer.
Awesome. Link to software?
Believe it or not it's actually just the blackberry site. Blackberry.com and then support and you will see the different versions so you can download the one you need. Thanks!
@@StevealiciousTech Hi Steve...I have no idea which software I should download. I am running Windows 10 and when I connected my Playbook to my newer system it did install the software (from the tablet) and it says it's connected to my computer but never really initializes and so it doesn't show up in File Manager where I can copy all my very valuable video files to my desktop computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated to get my tablet connected. The tablet does say the system software is up to date.
