It's been over 40 years since I've seen one of these magnificent engines. I'd entirely forgotten that they even existed before I found your video. Thank you.
The Hymeks were probably the best hydraulics on the WR in the 60s/70s - reliable little work horses at home either on a seven or eight coach passenger service or freight. My first encounter with them was in Worcester shed in 1972. There were a dozen in there. Great locos.
they look like a miniature class 47 I ain't seen one for a long time but I will visit a preserved railway next year and check a few hymeks out! Good video of these old-school locomotives 👏😎
The 35s were such great looking locos, classic 60s design and I like how so much thought went into the cab side windows, engine compartment windows and grills. They look a bit like a more refined version of the 47.
Yes I agree with that - a double engined CoCo Hymek would have been a really impressive machine. Funny how so many much less 'modern' looking locos were so much more successful than these though.
phill bygrave A bit like our endearingly ugly 25s in the North West ... They were also supposed to have more pulling power than you would expect. But the 35 in comparison really looks like someone genuinely considered the aesthetics of the bodywork.
must say I was just thinking how modern they look for such and old Diesel hydraulic locomotive I grew up in their era and worked for brel at crewe on 37s 47s I do so miss those days
There was a proposal to do a super- Western with 2x MD870's engines as used in the Hymek instead of 2x MD655's. But the Western Region has no need, and hydraulics were already out of favour with BR.
4 are preserved, only 2 are currently serviceable, D7017 at West Somerset Railway, and this one D7076 at The East Lancs Railway. D7029 is currently at The Severn Valley Railway undergoing restoration, it has been out of service since 23 July 1987, and is still a long way off running again, details are here www.westernchampion.co.uk/loco-d7029-restoration.php D7018 also at The West Somerset Railway is another long out of service loco, after a major engine failure in 1995, however this loco is expected back into service later this year, probable re-entry into service is the lines (The West Somerset Railway) diesel gala in June. Hello There it is Mr Cannadine T. Boxill-Harris, I have another interesting idea for most of you Class 508, Class 507, Class 313, Class 314 and that also is including those interesting Class 315 Fans out there, rather than scrapping most of those Class 508, Class 507, Class 313's Class 314's including the Class 315's maybe you guys can convert them and including the refurbishment into those Leyland 680 Engine, Volvo B10M Engine, Volvo D10M Engine, Cummins M11 Engine, Gardner 6LXC Engine, Gardner 6LXB Engine, Gardner 8LXB Engine, Class 508 Class 507, Class 313's, Class 314's and the Class 315's and convert all of them into a 2 Carriages and Three Carriages of the Class 508, Class 507, Class 313's, Class 314's and that is including those Class 315's for most of us Class 314's and the Class 315's Diesel Train Fans out there Please? Are you still going to do this interesting type of Project for all of us out there Pretty PLEASE.
The engine was de-rated for the Hymek, for the loco's planned use, reliability, lower maintenance & fuel costs. You're thinking of the DB V 169, which ran the engine at 2000hp, & used a gas-turbine in tandem: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DB_Class_V_169
@@howlingwolven See my comment. DB ran a much tighter maintenance schedule, because the engine was higher rated. And as Vaas said, you can't get 2,000hp from a 1,700hp engine, no matter what transmission is used.
Any diesel engine can be set to a range of power outputs within upper and lower limits. It's a question of the intended application, and there are trade offs between reliability, maintenance and fuel costs. I seem to remember that experiments uprating the engine to 2000bhp output took place on a few Hymeks shortly after introduction, but they were quickly rerated to the nominal 1740bhp service output. The ones used for banking duties on the Lickey also had their first gears locked out to prevent them from oscillating between gears when in use. Wonderful locomotives.
How long did she sit there before? A year, or two...? A rediculously sputtering start up, a terrible idle, smoke of all colours drifting around. And the engine in total runs just horribly rough. You'll hardly find a worse working MD 870.
One of the most aesthetically pleasing locomotives of BR
Thanks to E.G.M. Wilkes of Wilkes and Ashmore.

No matter the era, the mechanics of the GWR always put the heart & soul into craftsmanship, hasn’t it?

A lovely sound from a very underated class of loco.
Interesting fact, this particular Hymek is actually two in one. While being renovated, parts from another Hymek (D7096) were used in its construction.
I don't know why, but I can look at bid diesel engine start up's all day long. Great sound too.

Oliver Wood double-engined Hymek? Like D0280 Falcon? The absolute beautiful loco that looks like a blend of a Hymek and a 47, a real work of art
Beautiful. I would have happily stood there with those blokes, enjoying a Maybach "Vape".....👍👍👍
Love the sound of a v16
Haha the tractor just slowly passing by with the class 08 was funny
The Railway Series books knew what they were talking about, saying
diesels of this class have a growling sort of noise when they work.
The startup reminds me a bit of prop fighter engine. All that's missing are the flames from the exhaust stack!
Now that sounds awesome
Considering it was once a wreck and they had to make one good one from D7076/96 it looks superb!Needs a nice set of Blue/Greys to finish it off!
I still think western 52 class was the big boy in it class twin maybachs just a class act and sound , A true loco fr sure ❤️👍

Imagine a 52 powered by two MD 870s!
Main color on that thing seems to split the difference between blue and green.
These seem to start a lot easier than the ee locos
How I wish I was there too...
"He still growls - not because he is cross, but because he can't help it."
Lovely start up

Fab Sound 🎼❤️
great sound and great steam ;)))
At Oxford Shed, they used to leave these things ticking over all night, they were such bu**ers to start. Used to lull me to sleep when I lived nearby.
A very Grumpy Fire up from Her Blueness.
Does anyone think the 35 will ever see mainline service again would be good to see a warship too on the mainline again
@@bennickss I wonder if its a reliability thing I've heard a 45 is making a return and 40118 has picked up pace so fingers crossed
Not a chance. Enjoy 35s on heritage lines.
@@jimmillington8299 was there a reason the 35 and the 42 never went back on mainline
j'adore les gros moteurs diesel !!!!
They sound like planes
These engines may need at lest five minutes to warm,,ant then may run at medium power,,and ten minutes to apply full power.
And some!!
I had no idea 37057 had already been restored
Good thing the man on the left has pockets in his trousers.
BR did not supply gloves in those days.
its like a mini class 47
But better looking and better sounding!
@@jimmillington8299Agreed
What power plant were the 35's fitted with when first built? Only I don't remember them sounding like that ? Thanks
Same as this one, Maybach 87 litre V16. Just 50 years older.
76 doesnt have the silencer arrangement that it had from factory(7017 and I believe 18 still do) so the engine noise is much louder
What was the class that went through the picture with that shunter? Was it a 37 or a 40?
37

Four are preserved, in working order
4 preserved. 3 currently in working order.
Three (D7017, D7018, D7076) with a fourth under works (D7029) with an estimated completion date of 2030

Stop posting this pointless drivel. It makes no sense and it has no practical purpose.
Beautiful ugly sound
Similar engine to the panther and tiger im sure the 52 runs a maybach tiger lump
This engine is a lot bigger than those tank engines
This has an MD870 in it, Westerns have two MD655
Pair that engine with a Voith transmission and it'll do 2000 hp.
Don't get it, the engine would make the same HP regardless of transmission wouldn't it?

Yep.
It seems that everybody is an expert on how to start a diesel. Do they actually own one? No, I thought not.
Haha exactly, and it's simple in a car (glow, fire up). These engines have so many procedures I lose track on the informative videos 😂
