  • John from www.okraw.com/ shares with you how eating persimmons can potentially kill you!
In this episode, you will how John learned persimmons can kill people, plus his research regarding how this occurs and how to prevent it so you can be safe if you choose to eat persimmons.
First, John will share how persimmons can kill you, which is due to some of the tannins that are contained within the persimmon. The tannins are concentrated in the seed and the skin of persimmons.
You will discover how the tannins and stomach acid in some cases can cause bezoars or an indigestible mass that accumulates in your digestive tract, sometimes causing a blockage. This blockage does have consequences and has killed people. Specifically, when a bezoar occurs from persimmons they are phytobezoars because it is from a plant and more specifically called a diospyrobezoars as it is a more common plant-sourced bezoar.
You will discover that some people are more prone to getting bezoars, who have pre-dispositions some of which include people with ulcers or had ulcer surgery, people who don't have good stomach acid, people who have had gastric surgery, people who have Crohn's disease, are dehydrated, have hypothyroidism, have loss o pyloric function, people with diabetes, people with impaired gastric mobility, have slow digestion and more. People with more than one predisposition are significantly more prone to bezoars.
You will learn some of the potential symptoms of a bezoar, which include but are not limited to pain, stomach distension (Swelling/bloating), nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
You will discover some of the common treatments for bezoars, including surgery and physical removal of the blockage, plus some more non-invasive ways, such as coca-cola, enzymes, and citric acid.
Next, you will learn how to minimize your risk of having this occur:
    Don't Eat astringent persimmons
    Choose non-astringent persimmons instead
Do not eat unripe persimmons esp if they make your mouth pucker
Do not eat seeds and skin of persimmons
    Do not over consume
Chew into mush or blend to create a smaller particle size
Do not eat persimmons with high protein foods such as meat and milk.
Be especially careful if you have any preexisting conditions that are associated with this medical condition.
Finally, you will learn why John will continue to eat & enjoy persimmons while they are in season.
After watching this episode, you will learn about the danger of eating persimmons and how some people are more prone to this situation occurring than others. You will also learn John's opinions on this topic and some ways that may be able to reduce your risk.

John I got a bezoar from persimmons just last month. They were ripe organic fuyus, the flat ones. Got 25lbs for 40$ from the Berkeley farmer's market. Went to persimmon island for 2 days eating pretty much nothing but the delicious fruit. I started to notice some discomfort in my stomach but kept eating them anyway whenever I was hungry. By the 2nd day I finally had to chill and research and came across the information on bezoars. It was uncomfortable but not too bad. By that point I had eaten 2/3rds of the 25 pounds. So I spread the last third of em out over a week. Talked to my other raw friends about it and nooone had ever had that happen. Since then I have still been eating them lol cuz they are delicious and in season. Sometimes I eat 5-10 at one time. I have not had any discomfort with them again since then. Fyi I usually eat a very well rounded fruit and vegetable based living foods diet. Every once in a while I like to monomeal or even go to a particular fruit island eating one fruit solo for a day or two. Thanks for the info John. I think I just had to get used to them.

John. Thank you for the information. I feel we should keep a perspective on this issue. I am no scientist so I am just sharing my point of view here. There are so many other foods that might be so much higher in tannins such as tea, coffee, wine, grapes, mint, basil, blue berries.... If we google, there are so many other food items with tannins that people consume EVERYDAY. So given that not so many of us eat persimmons seeds and astringent skin or meat of the fruit, should we not be more concerned about other food items with tannins consumed everyday? Some might have died from "persimmons" but were they not feasting on tea, coffee or wine as well? There seem to be also 2 kinds of tannins so I am not sure which kind creates the problems and which food item has which or both.

    • @discountjuicers
      @discountjuicers 3 года назад +2

There are many types of tannins, for some reason this situation is more common with the specific type of tannin in persimmons. I agree, people should have some tannins in their diet for their benefit, but too many may not be a good thing.

Great video, John! Very helpful, and might not be as “alarmist” as some in the comments are suggesting…
Had a BAD bout of constipation last year that required a couple months of rehabilitation to FINALLY resolve. I naturally sought answers online, found your video, and wondered if some persimmons I ate were at least partly to blame. Guess I didn’t really believe it because I forgot ALL about it. Now I’m once again suddenly crapping marbles (when I can manage to evacuate SOMEthing) and once again wondering why, DAMMIT!
At this point, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it’s persimmon season! But I never eat POUNDS at a time-they’re just too expensive. At most, I’ll have one or two of the more non-astringent Fuyu a day, here and there. But I guess it just doesn’t take much for me. Plus the persimmons sold in the store are never PROPERLY ripe and sometimes never ripen, but DANG do I LOVE them! Even when they’re only slightly sweet and still got a bit of a crunch!
…That is, I’ve LOVED persimmons (past tense.) Will have to stop eating them, I think, and pray that restores the “move”. 🤞🏼

Eating a lot of bananas can bind you up ,also eating prickly pear cactus fruit can definitely bind you up because of all the tiny seeds.i think the astringent varieties of persimmons would be worse because they probably dehydrate the body & absorb a lot of fluid while getting digested.

I always eat the skin. Mind you I see it like an apple. Some people enjoy eating the whole apple and yet others prefer to peel off the skin.
Also, there are two types of persimos. Astringent and non astringent. Basically, astringent persimmons have to be completely soft and squishy. When you open it, it should have a jelly consistency. At this point you can eat it with a spoon. Scraping all that delicious jelly out. Or eat like I do, I enjoy the skin as well. The non astringent persimmons you have to eat crunchy as long as they're not green and they changed color to an orange you can enjoy it like you would an apple. And I also eat the skin of non astringent persimmons.
On occasion I like to cut the non astringent persimmons, squeezed lime juice on it and sprinkle a little salt or 'Tajin' chili. And it's very delicious 😊. Hope I was a bit of help.(oh yeah don't eat the seeds I never eat the seeds, apple seeds are also poisonous if you eat large quantities of them so really don't eat the seeds).

Persimmon is an American fruit, ( Diospyros Virginiana) the original Grandaddy of them all. The tree is native to Virginia and 1,000 mile radius. The fruit is awful, small, about 1 Inch in diameter, thick skin, has 6 seeds, and very astringent, even when ripe. The core wood is very hard and a popular "Wood" golf club. By mid1800's the Chinese had tinkered with the botanical work and came out with a few varieties with larger, more edible fruits. Being very secretive in nature, the Chinese were exceeded by the Japanese who were independently working on the same. Their effort were more popular and sold world wide. Recent findings also revealed medical uses of some contents.

You have to know whether they're an astringent variety or a non-astringent variety. The astringent type you have to wait until a good frost to harvest (you can ripen them in the freezer, too) the fruit. The non-astringent type you can eat from the time they turn orange.

I had a persimmon for the first time. It was orange in color. Soft fleshly like between a tomato and mango..sweet level about 5-6...but awful wood taste that's like chewing bark..

I have Crohn's disease and if I eat the astringent varieties I go directly to the ER. But the non astringent ones like the Faufau, if they are well ripe, I'm ok with them. I eat only one and not 4/5 like I used to.

There isn't a nutritional thing which exists in a persimmon that you can't get elsewhere w/o the black warning label. Since they don't taste so awesomely different than any other kind of fruit, there's nothing you're missing by excluding this fruit from your diet.
