I found that insurance through Costco has the best value for me. I was able to get much better coverage for half the price of Liberty Mutual. I had Tesla insurance for a few months and I kept getting phantom front collision warnings. Still had a 97 safety score but again through Costco was cheaper with higher coverage amounts. I always shop around for insurance every cycle. I find the rates are always changing.
Haven't had a claim yet with Tesla Insurance, but I am paying a little over $100/mo for my 2023 Model Y. Progressive, by comparison, was quoting me $265/mo.
I just bought a 2023 model 3 long range and got the Tesla insurance with it. First 2 months, you’ll have a safety score of 90. After the first two months, they’ll go based off your actual safety score. False forward collision warnings will increase your insurance premium by $30 a month. You can’t dispute it. Late night driving is from 10pm-4am. If you’re planning on driving consistently after 10pm, expect your premium to go up another $30. I’m still keeping it for now since it’s still half the price as other insurance companies
In California: Tesla insurance was more than Geico which was more than Costco amfam-connect. Moved home insurance to Costco as well - savings is 5x more than the annual Costco membership fee.
My Model X was hit by underinsured driver. Took 4 months to repair, cost $31,000. I am in NC with State Farm paying $938/6mo. But it keeps going up each renewal, as it was ~$600/6mo 3 years ago when my car was worth twice as much! 🤔 Anyway, thanks for doing this video!

I just bought a Model Y. I’m paying $10/month less than for my 2019 Honda Clarity and $30/month more than my 2014 Prius. All are fully insured with high liability coverage and $500 deductible on collision. I’m located in California and have both home and auto insurance through State Farm.

Wow. costco quoted me 200/m ! i currently have tesla insurance and its 110-150/m depending on my driving habbits for the month. The big brother system is quite annoying
The thing with the Costco insurance is the maximum property damage coverage is 100k. That won't be enough for multiple car accidents and against high end cars. 100k is just too low to have a peace of mind for me.

I’m considering switching from progressive to Tesla insurance. Right now I have $1000 deductibles with no glass coverage and 100/300/100 split for $145 mo with progressive. the only problem with this video we do not know the level of coverage, i have a model Y 2022 with AAA, Full coverage with liability 100.000 / 300.000, comp and collision, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and I pay 5.500$ a year for two drivers for 20.000-25.000 annual driving miles.
Wow, $3100 / year from AAA for a single Model Y? I have Tesla Insurance with a 2023 Model Y, 2024 Model Y and an older Lexus sedan for $3,330 / year ($275/mo.). Geico was actually pretty close in price, about $25 more per month when we only had the 2023 MY and Lexus sedan (old). I might get another quote from Geico to see with another Model Y added to the garage. The problem with Geico for California is it takes them about 2 months to write the policy for CA drivers so you need to have your other insurance while the policy is being written but I have used them before and there customer service was always top notch, knowledgeable and helpful. The concern I had with Geico were their approved service centers at the time (over a year ago) and with Tesla Insurance, I could get into a Tesla service center for the OEM parts. Thanks.
My State Farm agent is wonderful. Very fast to respond to my emails and always willing to help with any questions. I've never had a claim in well over 15 years so no surprise raising of my rates.
That’s great for you. I got quoted at 7k a year with USAA here in New Jersey. I have no accident and no speeding tickets. And also have my homeowners insurance through USAA fml.
2023 M3P: ~$1750/yr at Allstate with MileWise (low mileage, it dings me for hard braking or 85+ MPH). ~$750 at Tesla Insurance, but it can sometimes go up to $1200 the way I drive. A real pain in the a55 to Not drive it like a sports car. 🥵 I'm going to check with American Family Auto insurance (thru Costco?), Nationwide, State Farm (may not cover the full labor rate Tesla charges?), Geico, and Costco Ameriprise
Tesla insurance was more expensive for me.....I have State Farm and they were low balling the Certified Tesla Repair Shop from the beginning. State Farm does NOT have a accurate list of Tesla Certified Repair Shops....I recommend you go to the Repair Shop and let them handle the whole claim. Luckily State Farm paid the whole thing to the Certified Tesla Shop but the Shop owner did NOT recommend State Farm. Im happy with state farm they didnt give me a head ache just scared me at first with the low ball quotes which apparently is normal......This was my experience in my area...yours may be different.
Here in s.cali 1/2022 front end corner accident. $8k repair. I have tesla Insurance. Car went in 1/2022 to fix and gave a 3 month estimate. But since I have tesla Insurance, my car can be left at the center until they are ready to look at it. But they said tesla Insurance has priority over other insurance because everything will be approved. Got lucky and the car was fix in 30days. My rate for 2 model y. 2021/2022 LR/LRP. Is $265 a month. Just car insurance. No other discounts
yeah, this ridiculous costs of insurance for EV's is cost prohibtive. Kinda pushes me out of the market. If Government does not regulate this, can hurt the market. Sounds like the 30k ev's for the masses will still be hit with Lambergini Insurance costs. Test drove a Y yesterday, now have to back off with $$$$ Insurance costs.
Tesla Insurance has been great so far, cheaper than Geico on my old KIA soul and they replaced my windshield and paid the claim on site with Tesla service.. Not a huge crash obviously but its been great.
Your statement about insurance companies picking your repair parts is wrong. It’s the shop you chose. Leif’s law lets you pick the shop so pick a shop that doesn’t scam you with cheap parts
Tesla Insurance starts out cheap and then keeps going up in price. The safety score 2 came out today and it is going to keep making drivers get worse scores and thus charging more. I am constantly dinged for aggressive turning due to living at the bottom of a hill on a street with a ton of traffic, so you can't take it slow. Also I did a u-turn the other day with no one around and the collision alert went off for a couple of minutes, that is another ding. The forward collision can go off a lot at low speeds due to a car going slower even if you have space. The late night driving is just ridiculous as there is less traffic.
Hi Chris. thanks for the great reviews. How did you resolved the VIN and incorrect description issue for your Model X being a Plaid model? I have similar issue in that I purchased a standard model Y but we just contacted our insurance and when the pull the VIN it comes out as a "performance" model. Dont want to pay for higher insurance when i have a standard model and not a performance version. thanks
@EverydayChris Good to know, quote from Geico is almost the same so I'll go with them since my other vehicle is insured with Geico. Thanks for the info!!
I should quit driving because my insurance company canceled my policy because my wife and kids had accidents and I had a speeding ticket in 20 years. Now the new company charging me $5000 for 6 months for my Tesla 😮😢. I don’t know who is at fault because kids and wife and me we all blaming each other and agents 😓
Tesla is driving me up the wall. I work at home and do dinner meetings. I have Tesla insurance. My “safety score” went from 96 to 84 just because I went to diner meeting at 8pm and came home at 11:30 pm. And it says my insurance will be $260 next month, from $176. ALL BECAUSE I DROVE ONCE AT NIGHT! Yes, I live in the city. Traffic is all hours. It’s only my 4th day of owning this thing. Can you imagine if I went on a road trip ? 😭
If you own a Tesla covered by their insurance and have a secondary vehicle, that’s not a Tesla, you can call Tesla and add the vehicle to the insurance. Just wondering if their rate for non tesla is competitive.
Liberty Mutual has an option where if your Tesla is totalled, they will replace it with one that's 1 year newer with less than 15,000 miles. The option raises your rate by about $30/month.
Chris, content creators like yourself are becoming a very valuable guide on how to navigate into being a new Tesla owner. I searched on the topic of Tesla insurance and I think this video was the best and most informative of the bunch. Thanks for your videos!!
I have Wawanesa (Los Angeles). Their rates are competitive and customer service has been outstanding. I recently filed a claim for my rear hatch (idiotically backed into my garage door before it fully opened) and the process has been nothing short of amazing - very smooth and no issues. The body shop is Tesla certified and because of the amount of Teslas they do, they already have some common body parts and panels pre-ordered and in stock. So it took only a week to repair (hatch replaced and painted).
@@2sidetales749 No he has Wawanesa Insurance based in San Diego Ca.Have to have a good driving record, but i've been with them since the 90's,very good rates (saved a fortune compared to State Farm, which i had for years) My '23 M 3 rates went up 240$ per year compared to a 12 year old BMW,can't complain about that
Had Geico for many years, and they were the cheapest in Southern California for EV's , until I just tried Connect through Costco, and they were 20% cheaper when I bundled my cars and home, which I had with Geico as well. This is with a late 2021 Model Y Performance and a 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV with 250,000/500,000 coverage.
Ran in to a red-light runner on 30 April. Just got my car back on 15 August. Most of that time was spent haggling with Traveler's insurance as they wanted to total out my car. The went out of their way to devalue my car and went so far as to write an addition estimate of their own to increase the value of repairs. No one paid any attention to the fact that the car had increased value due the region I live in. They claimed that in WA state, insurance claims only had to cover 71% of the value of the car as THEY thought it to be. If I were to retain posession of the car they "deemed
I love watching your videos man! I test drove a used model Y and fell in love. I’m on the fence about buying a used 2021 model or just saving up for a little bit longer and getting a brand new LR 2023 model Y
Personally I just bit the bullet and bought the 2023 model Y performance. Theyve made a few changes over the years that makes it slightly better. Better suspension (LR only), small interior changes, AMD chip for the computer. Also with the $7500 tax credit its the same if not cheaper to buy new. Also the interest rate youd get on a used auto loan would be outragous these days
Great video really informative. im getting my first Tesla this week a model Y and want to decide between Tesla insurance or get it with my regular insurance provider Geico. They both are quoting me the same price of about $100 a month and i know from Geico when i was in an accident they immediately sorted everything out nothing happened to my car. I just had a 5 minute over the phone conversation with a rep from Geico and that was it so I have no complaints about Geico they been amazing. And after hearing these stories about tesla insurance im kinda hesitant to go with them and just stay with Geico.
It's a scam. I keep getting these false frontal collision alert and my premium went from $200...$285...$325. It's kinda creepy that Tesla monitor how you should drive and punish you for it even if it's the AI fault.
This is what I've been worried about. Tesla would know all of your driving habits. There's a level of "big brother" that feels like it would not be conducive
Currently going through a minor accident with my model 3. I have USAA. One of the trends I've noticed with a lot of insurance companies including USAA is that a lot of them don't have "Tesla certified" body shops in their approved vendor list. So pretty much every shop you take it to has to submit a supplemental claim with your insurance to get the full repairs covered. All this just ends up being more of a nuisance/inconvenience over anything.
I have Tesla insurance, my dad has AAA and when he got into an accident Tesla raised MY rates! He's never even driven my car. There customer support has no idea what they are doing and I'm shit out of luck.
I got Liberty Mutual, with multiply cars, 1 Model X, for couple of years. got in 2 accidents but not our fault, and pay by at fault insurance company. was paying close to $2k for the 18' Model X 100D, got kick out due to the accidents, went to State Farm, just the Tesla along is close to $3k, right now I got Tesla Insurance around under $200 per month, only have it for less than a month.. Will change back to Liberty Mutual after 2year when allowed to go back. When the delivery of new Model 3 Perf. quote from State Farm is close to $3k, right now with Tesla insurance is around $180
I went for Tesla insurance…mainly because I didn’t have a choice. The absolute cheapest I could find was $500 per month from Progressive. I’ve been driving an Audi Q5 for the last two years for a small small fraction of that. I’ve never had a crash of any kind and am 43, living in Dallas. Tesla insurance sucks because it’s always watching what you’re doing and if you get a handful of front collision warnings or hard braking warnings (often due to other drivers behaviour) this adds literally hundreds per month to your next premium, but like I say, I don’t have a choice.
I had Geico for many years before getting my 2022 Tesla Model 3. I nearly s**t my pants when they quoted me $390 a month to fully insure! That's almost what my car payments are! I immediately signed up for Tesla Insurance for $172 a month. $390 is a heck of a lot more stressful than $172!
currently have state farm. I got a quote from the tesla insurance and it was more than state farm. I know the tesla insurance would be cheaper if CA allowed insurance companies to use actual driving data for rates.
Thanks for the video Chris. I dont have ModelY or any Telsa. Could you talk about what kind of maintenance you need or future? after 2 year.. 5 years.. etc. Thanks
Oh, Oh, did you read your Tesla insurance coverage? Because mine is only about one third of my previous coverage. No Personal Injury, no rental car, no medical coverage, no uninsured coverage and I pay $178
Bro I’m a first generation army vet and am 28 clean record. USAA legit ROBBED me of $1,600 for a single month of car insurance. I think their stuff is just messed up and it may have boosted what i really had (like you said with your Model X) it’s a joke! Been talking with them for 4 months and they refuse to fix it so i’m with state farm and pay $220-$240/mo now. World of difference, USAA is a J.O.K.E. (Edit: have a 2015 Model S 85D with 35k miles like new)
Yep, 2weeks for repair , & rental. 500$ out of pocket..for that. Not at fault. I had StateFarm. They didn’t help any, & Travelers for the AtFault Driver, didn’t cover any Rental costs.Hertz not happy.
Tesla insurance sucks!!!!! I had to use my insurance and my adjuster never contacted me for anything I’ve been the one emailing him invoices and it’s been 2 months since I last heard from him at this point he has completely ghosted me and won’t reply my emails and he just ignores my calls, spoke to other representative and asked to give me his supervisor’s number and she said they don’t do that and I don’t have the right to speak to a supervisor, I need them to refund me about 8k that I paid for parts they didn’t have at Tesla collision center, storage, towing, ceramic, ppf, rental and a tire (since I had wider tires on my car) it’s a nightmare, DONT GET TESLA INSURANCE!!!
I’m getting dinged on my Tesla insurance through Tesla. I’m at 85 score because I work at 3am plus front collision because of afternoon traffic when I get off work. I was paying 90$ now at 106.00
Something about Tesla insurance… i just canceled my Tesla insurance due to the safety score just like the things you mentioned but… i hardcore tried getting my best score from 93 to 95 and I’ve had 96 for a while but they kept raising my price. I was paying $89 the first couple months and then as i tried improving my score and they still increased up to $143. I said screw it
Safety score is annoying! I try to drive safely anyway and I don’t have any accident for the last 20 years, but having a system that keeps monitoring my every single step is totally annoying! 😂
I got that Progressive thing and that ting beeps all the time whenever I stop for the intersection, traffic lights, even in my garage. Ridiculous........
@@eggheadegghead and I get points deduction every morning when I apply brake before a stop sign going down hill. thats not bad for 2 teslas
What state are you in?
the only problem with this video we do not know the level of coverage, i have a model Y 2022 with AAA, Full coverage with liability 100.000 / 300.000, comp and collision, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and I pay 5.500$ a year for two drivers for 20.000-25.000 annual driving miles.
Same
My Tesla is insured with USAA for $77.00 a month in North Carolina.
🥵
I'm going to check with American Family Auto insurance (thru Costco?), Nationwide, State Farm (may not cover the full labor rate Tesla charges?), Geico, and Costco Ameriprise
Im happy with state farm they didnt give me a head ache just scared me at first with the low ball quotes which apparently is normal......This was my experience in my area...yours may be different.
good to knw ty
Sticking with USAA for sure.
No other discounts
wow interesting
11 days for Tesla Collision shop to repair my model 3. 6k worth of damage from being rear ended. Tempe, AZ
11 days not too bad yet
Wait so California premiums with Tesla insurance don’t get faulted on safety scores?
Apparently it’s a law that they can’t base it on that but they can raise it with their own methods lol
I have Geico for our 2022 MYP and 2021 Chevrolet Silverado High Country for $200 per mo.
Thats why tesla just got hit with a lawsuit claiming monopolization of repairs & parts
yeah, this ridiculous costs of insurance for EV's is cost prohibtive.
Mercury quoted $1758 for six months. Here in California
That’s because the scoring criteria was written by a bunch of actuaries, not the average person.
Hi Chris. thanks for the great reviews.
How did you resolved the VIN and incorrect description issue for your Model X being a Plaid model?
I have similar issue in that I purchased a standard model Y but we just contacted our insurance and when the pull the VIN it comes out as a "performance" model. Dont want to pay for higher insurance when i have a standard model and not a performance version.
thanks
my agent had to manually enter all the details !
ModEL 3 INSURED WITH TESLA. cheaper than Geico. I have 3 other cars with Geico but adding the model 3 was going to raise it $400 a month
Wow your insurance is SO expensive. Here in the UK I pay £600 per year on a new MY
I found Traveles to be lower than Stare Farm and USAA.
Does Tesla insurance look at driving habits/miles driven? From info from car?
Yea but it’s illegal to use that as a factor in California at least
@EverydayChris Good to know, quote from Geico is almost the same so I'll go with them since my other vehicle is insured with Geico. Thanks for the info!!
Cruise control and the car phantom brakes or miscalculates traffic and does a sudden brake, does it affect tesla insurance score?
If autopilot is active it wont affect ur rate. I make sure to turn it on while there is traffic so i dont get dinged for following to closely
Yup doesn't effect anything
Positive Comment!!!!
Forward collision comes on all the time for me and literally lowers my daily score from 97 to 65 on one drive. Smh
Omg meanwhile in Canada we are paying an average of 300+ for a basic car in Canada Ontario 😅
I should quit driving because my insurance company canceled my policy because my wife and kids had accidents and I had a speeding ticket in 20 years. Now the new company charging me $5000 for 6 months for my Tesla 😮😢. I don’t know who is at fault because kids and wife and me we all blaming each other and agents 😓
these initial intro rates are always lowered. Then the raise will kick in eventually. Sigh.
I do believe the safety score is a privilege... if you keep complaining about it, they will take it away
200 IS TWICE WAT I PAY FOR MY HONDA. I'M OUT! NOT BUYING A, TESLA
Making a claim with Tesla insurance is a nightmare.
In bed by 6pm?! We need a video on your daily!
No difference in the cost of my car insurance from a 2021 Toyota Prius to a 2023 Tesla model three base no difference at all
I ordered a MYP and gave Geico and Progressive my VIN and it seems there is no distinction between performance and LR. Does that sound right?
Thats my experience as well when getting quotes
What about Tesla insurance for non-Tesla vehicle? Cheaper or more expensive compared to others?
Very much doubt you can do that.
I think only tesla vehicles?
If you own a Tesla covered by their insurance and have a secondary vehicle, that’s not a Tesla, you can call Tesla and add the vehicle to the insurance. Just wondering if their rate for non tesla is competitive.
What are you even talking about?
@@WillCollect The rate for the non tesla is the same rate for the Tesla. So you pay the Tesla rate 2x for an additional non Tesla.
You go to bed at 6pm?
haha early. awake by 3

I have Tesla Model Y 2023 $75/mo.😊
Which insurance company?
@Navneet Gill I have Tesla Insurance for my Galaxy 2023 Y.

Woohoooo thank you!
Are you referring to Tesla insurance?
@@2sidetales749 No he has Wawanesa Insurance based in San Diego Ca.Have to have a good driving record, but i've been with them since the 90's,very good rates (saved a fortune compared to State Farm, which i had for years) My '23 M 3 rates went up 240$ per year compared to a 12 year old BMW,can't complain about that
wow i also have wawanesa and im getting tesla this week. whats your rate?
Had Geico for many years, and they were the cheapest in Southern California for EV's , until I just tried Connect through Costco, and they were 20% cheaper when I bundled my cars and home, which I had with Geico as well. This is with a late 2021 Model Y Performance and a 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV with 250,000/500,000 coverage.
Costco has suspended offering new insurance in that market for some reason.
@@rkgsd wow. I heard that Geico did as well
Ran in to a red-light runner on 30 April.
Currently going through the same bs with UsAA. Almost same situation as you
I love watching your videos man!
Agree get the 2023
Great video really informative. im getting my first Tesla this week a model Y and want to decide between Tesla insurance or get it with my regular insurance provider Geico.
Didn’t it have the curfew where you can’t be driving past 10 pm otherwise it’ll increase the price?
This is what I've been worried about. Tesla would know all of your driving habits. There's a level of "big brother" that feels like it would not be conducive
Currently going through a minor accident with my model 3. I have USAA. One of the trends I've noticed with a lot of insurance companies including USAA is that a lot of them don't have "Tesla certified" body shops in their approved vendor list. So pretty much every shop you take it to has to submit a supplemental claim with your insurance to get the full repairs covered. All this just ends up being more of a nuisance/inconvenience over anything.
This is good to know I just signed up through USAA for our model X
Does any insurance company have Tesla certified body shops aside from Tesla insurance?
@@TwistiieHD I have yet to find one that does. I’ve talked with a few other local owners who have different insurance and it’s the same situation.
Geico let's you go to a tesla certified body shop, including connect through Costco, because I asked them when I switched over last week
5 years.. etc. Thanks
I have a video on it already!!
Tesla insurance was able to give me a rate about $80 cheaper than any other company could
That’s your first month only. The good old bait and switch. Coz mine jumped almost a hundred bucks just because I drive at night.
@@irandude1655 nah its been 4 months still the same. I live in CA, we dont have the safety score
Oh, Oh, did you read your Tesla insurance coverage? Because mine is only about one third of my previous coverage. No Personal Injury, no rental car, no medical coverage, no uninsured coverage and I pay $178
@@irandude1655 yeah of course, mine i the opposite! Tesla was able to actually give me 3x my previous coverage for cheaper
Your rate for Tesla Insurance is awful rate is 2292 a year, I pay 1400 a year way better at State Farm, and no safety score to deal with.!!!!
$1188 for a whole year for 30k miles?? That seems super cheap. However, its kind of meaningless if we do not know the policy details.
(Edit: have a 2015 Model S 85D with 35k miles like new)
Thank you, the day I finally get my hands on a tesla I will use the one you use just to be cool like you!
You got this my guy.
Yep, 2weeks for repair , & rental. 500$ out of pocket..for that. Not at fault. I had StateFarm. They didn’t help any, & Travelers for the AtFault Driver, didn’t cover any Rental costs.Hertz not happy.
I get it now I always thought most tesla drivers were bad drivers.
how to enable gap insurance in the tesla app?
Sheeesh
No claim, no opinion I would say for insurance.
I’m getting dinged on my Tesla insurance through Tesla. I’m at 85 score because I work at 3am plus front collision because of afternoon traffic when I get off work. I was paying 90$ now at 106.00
Wow that’s crazy
Something about Tesla insurance… i just canceled my Tesla insurance due to the safety score just like the things you mentioned but… i hardcore tried getting my best score from 93 to 95 and I’ve had 96 for a while but they kept raising my price. I was paying $89 the first couple months and then as i tried improving my score and they still increased up to $143. I said screw it
Wow that sucks. Yeah man that safety score is crazy
Tesla does only 5 states… what’s the point?
$375 a month for 6 months😅😅State Farm. 2021 model3 RWD
I had Travelers in Florida and it was horrible!
