Take-off from Athens airport, water drop, landing and servicing of the 49.000 liters waterbomber!
Russian Air Force Ilyushin IL-76MD waterbomber in Greece during August 2021 Vilia fire (Attica).
Mixed footage of both two heavy waterbombers Russian airplanes operating waterdrops.
The two airplanes arrived in Athens on 10 August 2021 late night, as RFF-8311 (RA-78831) and RFF8313 RF-78805. Both based at Athens airport, using taxiway B for parking. Water refill performed by two 20 ton water trucks.

This was the second time the specific Russian aircraft type operated in Greece for fire fighting. The first one was 22 years ago, on July 1999, when another similar airplane operated at least on two fires in Greece, using Elefsis airport as base.
That plane was RA-76429 (1043419639) Ilyushin IL-76TD Russia - Ministry for Emergency Situations (MChS). Photo on the video by Alex Filippopoulos.
This waterbomber aircraft is a 1.5-hour install/removal tanking kit conversion on a Ilyushin IL-76MD aircraft. The project was unveiled in 1990.

An amazing aircraft that literally determined the course of the 2021 wildfires, especially in Peloponnese where I was during that time... It is a massive pity and a historical shame that Greece turned its back to Russia, in everything including cultural bonds... No such planes will be seen assisting with fires any time soon in our country, unfortunately.

The Ilyushin's water reloading process is about nine times longer ...a Canadaire cycle average time is 10 minutes, whereas Ilyushin requiers to go back to airport, and reload...
Result : Il-76 cycling average time is about 90 minutes...
So a CL-415 delivers the double quantity of whater per day...

We are extremelly gratefull! On a sidenote, on that fire a Ilyushin IL-76 flew around 200m, correction 200feet away from a helicopter without prior notice and forced the helicopter pilot to declare on the radio that it was irresponsible, dangerous, that he would file a report after landing and also asked that they would stop working on that fire together. Watching all those diferent types of aircrafts working together on the Greek fires, I can only admire all those pilots for their skill and francly, their heroism. I cannot blame the IL-76's pilots for the incident, I do not have the skill/knowledge and I do not know all the facts. I just want to remind everyone how dificult it is to do what those pilots do. Again, I would like to thank them for it.

They definitely need to train and work out procedures together in the plane firefighting business on an European/Eurasian scale.
Any updates on the Be200 crash causes? Because that crash might have been due to lack of training or language issues.
fire fighting usually coordinated and water bombers obviously have priority, the only helicopters allowed in the area - those fire fighting coordinators who direct the water bomber and choose it's path and priorities, so they should be aware of the position of the water bomber at any point in time.
Either those in alleged helicopters were firefighters who are complaining about their selves not doing their job
or they were not supposed to be there and should be charged by government for flying in forbidden area.

to be effective you need to get closer which is impossible without breaking hundreds or rules.

That's what I thought.
They don't use water, they use fire retardant to slow down or stop the spread of fire.
It reach the ground at small densities, around 1Lt/M2. Water does not evaporate when is condensed.
The idea is to reduce the speed of fire, not to extinguish it.

Well, I saw the photage from inside of this plane at this particular moment and judging by how it started shaking for some reason, going any lower was most certainly not very safe at all

Πολύ ασύμφορα τα IL-76. Τα Canadair + Beriev βγάζουν καλύτερη απόδοση.
Γιατί άν βάλεις taxing time delays, loading, takeoff, landings τα Canadair και τα Beriev έχουν κάνει 15 ρήψεις και με μεγαλύτερη εγγύτητα.
Μα δεν έφτασε ούτε μια σταγόνα νερό στη φωτιά. Απλά δεν κάνουν για το δικό μας ανάγλυφο αυτά τα αεροπλάνα.

Yes we have a photo in Elefsis of the previous IL76 visit. Unfortunately there is nothing in our records for the German helicopters. I hope someone else will help you with this here on the comments.

on a military IL-76 there is the cockpit for the tail gunner who operates two 23 mm cannons for aerial defense. Look it up, most Soviet bombers and transports have similar layout. Probably copied or hugely inspired by B-29's tail gunner :)
This aircraft is tottaly useless for Greek tarain! Greece got a lot of mountains and those airplanes cannot maneuver so easly therefore the "throwing" must be made on very high heights. On that altitude its neatly ZERO the impact of the water through this kind of wildfires! Second reason is that this kind of airplanes they take HUGE amounts of time to land/reload/take off/reach the fire, as a reminder time is CRITICAL FACTOR in such situations cause wildfires speeding up to 30khm, depending on many circumstances!
This airplane is GREAT on vast lands tho without any hill or any mountain!

Pilot way too high in alt. All of that water will dissipate before it hits the fire. A 200 hundred feet max alt. for that drop is effective.

ουτε στα canadair φτανει...γιατι δεν κατεβαιναν ουτε αυτα κοντα...τα erickson εκαναν δουλεια και μονο ολα τα υπολοιπα για τα ματια του κοσμου..αυτες οι φωτιες χρειαζονται flury retardant απο αεροσκαφη σε σημεια για να μπουν μετα ta erickson / και πυρσβεστες απο κατω για να σβησουν...αλλα δεν υπαρχουν δρομοι για κανεναν απο κατω..οποτε τα erickson.... τελικα ηττα...η αττικη απολεσε σχεδον 250000 στρεμματα δασους

@@μελιΑχαιας το καθε πυροσβεστικο ειναι για συγκεκριμενη χρηση, αυτο το ξερουν και αυτοι που μας τα στελνουν, νασαι σιγουρος. Δεν τα στελνουν οπου ναναι για οτι ναναι.
