What type of thread to use and does the needle go through both layers or just the top one?
U can use 2-3 strands of normal thread or can also use anchor thread.

I tried it but it didn’t work for me. I have thin thread so mine didn’t work. If you’re gonna do it I recommend using a thick thread if you’re gonna try to fix your jean shorts or jeans to make them fit better
Yes I used an anchor thread which is thicker than normal thread plus it's very easy to pull and won't break easily

I tried this and made my jean 4 size smaller.. it fits perfectly but the back where i stitched kinda looks bad

Yes I just tie both of the ends in a knot at the wrong side of jeans.

Stick the needle back through right under your last stitch then it is on the inside. Knot and cut
@@kianieshal keep the needle in so after you pull, you can tuck the stitch before cutting the thread.

I'm using normal hand sewing needle
If it helps, I try to use needles with larger holes so I can fit at least 3 layers of thread and make the stitch a bit more durable.

what's the best way to measure how large of a triangle you need?
like do you just pinch in the back of the jeans with a clip and mark each side that's pulled in then start the outside of the triangle at those points?

I'm using anchor thread which is used for embroidery coz it's thick as compared to simple thread.Or you can also use 2-3 strands of simple thread to make it thicker so that it will be easy to pull and the thread will not break while pulling.

I’m guessing this will take it down two sizes
This is just a method to show how to downsize waist,you can stitch according to your desired fittings.
You can choose the area of stitching according to your need if you want to go 1 size down select stitching area up to half inch from both sides and if you want to go 2 sizes down you can increase the area up to 1 inch from both sides.
