I've always been a fan of using transistor dist in the FX loop of a tube amp. If your clean channel is on edge of break up, and then you engage a tube screamer with level = 10, gain = 2~4, and EQ sweep at anything above noon, and then you have a metalzone in the loop with the gain at the same setting, it just gives you another tone to play with, and the sound is basically 70/30 split between the metalzone and whatever your amp sounds like, respectively. On neck pickup, if your gain isn't already over the top you can even switch to your dirty channel and still engage the metalzone for some nice lead tones, or for neck pickup rhythm tones that still have the thick, meaty distortion of a bridge pickup but with rounder palm mutes and a more nasal, vocal single note tone.

Hello Kristian ! You did the right question ! Transistors (solid state technology) are projected to be linear, clean and transparent ! Tubes are non linear, changes their voice by volume and unfortunately could be microphonic ! 🤓Back to the question, I tried these set up : wha pedal, Krush OD (Ex Gear), Fullbore Metal (MXR), Cab M (Two notes) ! All the metal tones in a pedalboard package without the weight of a wall of tube amps ! The secret is try new combinations, new pedals and dare it ! 🍻

The thing to bear in mind is that the best recorded guitar sounds very rarely have an all-valve signal path, especially when it comes to distortion.
The thing about valves, sonically at least, is that they have a different type of capacitance to them and that makes certain frequencies in the upper register respond differently, as the capacitance in the valve coupled with the physical space that the electons have to cover creates a complex interplay of phase cancellations and waveform distortion that plays out uniquely every time. There's potentially scope to do some jiggery-pokery with DSP to simulate that but it's going to require a lot of engineering to get it to sound authentic because you could very easily end up sounding like a ring modulator unless you have the programming chops and hardware to sample the input, decode it, apply the attenuation, phase cancellation, and compression that a valve would impart across many, very narrow frequency bands via an algorithm that uses the calculations from the analysis of each sample to apply a constantly changing set of very small adjustments to the signal. An IR loader does something similar but it's really just applying a static EQ profile based on a breif recording of the amp through a microphone, which creates a close enough facsimile for recording and live sound but isn't actually simulating the actual behaviour of the amplifier so much as it's making it sound like a recording (which is what most people actually want and they probably wouldn't be able to tell unless they were actually using an oscilloscope to analyse a recording of the two on reel to reel tape with an all analogue signal path, which isn't worth anyone's time if it sounds good anyway)

I work away all week (I'm a truck driver) so taking a valve amp with me really ain't an option so I've made myself a little portable rig the signal path is as follows....
Epiphone SG Prophecy>Beringer tuner>Digitech Drop>EHX east river drive>Wampler SLOstrotion>Orange Getaway driver out using a 3.5mm cable to the aux in on my bluetooth speaker.
I use the digitech drop to down tune from e standard/drop d to anything I'm practicing at the time since taking loads of guitars ain't an option so while it ain't quite the same it does the job pretty well.
The EHX east river drive is a tube screamer and the SLOstortion and getaway driver give me different flavours of distortion and the getaway driver has a normal out and a cab sim out which sounds awesome imo...
However I might consider swapping out the SLOstortion for one of those REVV pedals...they sound awesome

Great video, like always. Thanks Kohle :)
But I bet this: more tweaking on the controls on REVV and Power amp would make the sound even closer, and then a blind A-B test. For sure a lot of us would fail to spot the real amp.
A lot of times on stage I used an EVH 5150 pedal into a Quilter Powerblock power amp and a 2x12 Mesa Cab. Crazy super good sounding rig.
No one...I mean...no one could tell that I was playing a solid state distortion and amp.
Things changed in the last few years, many setups now are mind blowing, and they don't include tube amps.

I own a MXR FullBore Metal pedal (it has a bad reputation). It works great in a tube amp clean channel with a little preamp overdrive added to it. Direct to the power doesn't sound that good. It took me some time to figure out how to make it sound well, but finally did it. The reasoning was the opposite to an overdrive + tube amp. This time the pedal was the distorted origin + a slight overdrive from the amp.

Maybe it could be reasonable also to get the second guitarplayer with a half or full stack (-s) in a band.
Advantages are that, for example, Jack Owen (ex-Cannibal Corpse and ex-Deicide) uses Floor Pod Line 6 into a crate amp (I am afraid that he can find Vox Amplug), while the second guitarplayer plays Mesa or Marshall and so on.

The closest thing to a tube is a JFET transistor. To get the big picture a Fuzz makes a waveform that can be drawn as a square, a Tube would be shaped as a square but the top would be a semi circle. A JFET is a square put the corners are rounded off :-)

I personally use the Two Note's Torpedo Wall of Sound plugin to emulate tube distortion along with my pedalboard, sounds great! For live use I use a Tech 21 Blonde at the end of my pedalboard and it sounds just as good as Wall of Sound or the Power Stage. Excellent, as always. One request - please consider using another amp, either instead of or in addition to the Brunetti. The Brunetti is beautiful, But the Mesa, for example, will be a more familiar sound to most of us

    • @KohleAudioKult

The reason for using the Brunetti is that it really sounds “middle of the road” in a good way.
A Rectifier just sounds too special (scooped, ballsy and grindy) for a comparison like this.

i prefer the voicing of the G3, but the revv pedals are no joke. the MXR 5150 pedal slaps too. the friedman pedals are solid. KSR ceres (from my hometown :D) is a game changer.
especially if this is a live rig. in the studio, under a microscope, we can hear all the differences with the harmonics. live? considerably harder to pick out. i've been running digital amps and effects processors for 10 years and have had people YELL at me that i won't give up my "secrets" and tell them what i was REALLY using.

I think the Revv pedal itself needed some treble turned up, the biggest difference I was hearing was that the “sizzle” wasn’t matched between the two, which inherently made the tubes “feel” more exciting. Imo if you pumped the gain and a little bit of treble on the rev, they would have been damn near identical!

The Revv pedal is basically a preamp pedal, not a distortion pedal. It's modeled after the preamp section of their flagship amp, so running it straight into a poweramp makes sense. Nice tones, btw! I was expecting the Revv pedal into the Brunetti power amp to sound very close. High gain metal tones are quite harsh and 'cold' compared to other high gain tones. Even with tubes, the clipping isn't as smooth as it can be with an amp that isn't 'made for metal.' However, when comparing hybrid amps to full tube amps, the power stage makes a huge difference. Without introducing any power tube saturation/distortion, you can still get that 'bouncy' sound of a tube amp. I've been wanting to do this 'reverse hybrid amp' idea for a while, but now you've made a great video about it. Now I know for sure it's something I want to experiment with more often.

The transistors just not distort on the same level of gain. For fair comparison, you have to align the INPUT level entering in the amp/pedal. It's like reducing the volume of the guitar on a tube amp... less volume, less overtone. B
oost the input of the ReVv4 and you'll get a little more closer.

Working at festivals I've noticed these Seymour Duncan Powerstage amps becoming quite popular for their portability (especially for fly-in shows) over the last few years. My favourite solid state amps are Quilter Overdrive series tho: they sound pretty sick, and I'm not exactly a fan of class D amps.

Hehe, I have the Uberschall pedal. I personally like it, but I agree with everything you said about it.
Typically I use it as an extra punch in the face channel on my already dirty sounds. For that use, the lower gain actually works in favour of the pedal because it doesn't fuzz up the whole thing, it just makes it more aggressive.
It also grits up a clean beautifully

The "All Tube Setup" with a TubeScreamer at the front made me smile ;). Cool video Kristian, I actually use a somewhat similar setup at home: Ibanez TubeScreamer -> Revv G3 -> Two Notes Le Clean -> Laney IRT-X. As I use the green channel of the Le Clean, all distortion comes from the G3 and it sounds very good to me. According to Revv, the G-Pedals mimic the sound of a channel of their big Generator amp. Might be a cool test to see how close they are if you want to check out the big amp anyway (and have 3700€ to spare on it).

Not that any companies will see this comment, but here's a product I'd love to buy: A power amp pedal that uses a pair of full size tubes, preferably interchangeable (i.e. accepts el34, 6l6, kt88), and stereo input/output. A class A that only uses 1 tube would be good, too.

Should use a Behringer Vintage Tube Screamer. It's not a tube AMP, but it's a tube PEDAL and it screams for 90$. Idk about modern metal with it though as I don't have fancy mixing stuff, but it definitely has a tube sound.

Tubes are just less linear and that’s what makes them more desirable. Finesse in your playing brings out different tones where transistors just kind of always give you a generic response. It’s hard to articulate. No pun intended.

Tube distortion generate even harmonics, transitor disortion generate odd harmonic. Transitor when distorded are basically a clipper, tube still keep some micro dynamics in front each wave. ;)

    • @KohleAudioKult

That's a little too simple. Of course you have both types of harmonics in both tube and transistor distortion. And modern JFET circuits are quite a bit more complex that those old school diode clippers.

You're right about the voicing of certain pedals, as many seem voiced as preamps rather than distortions for clean channels...it's probably cliche, but Ola Really blew this wide open with his video of the Metal Zone through the power amp of his Randall Satan...I think the Amprweaker products would likely fall under the this category, especially the FatMetal and TightMetal pedals...

Have you tried any of the AMT Legend II series preamps? I've been collecting as many as I can because I love them so much, they handle high gain incredibly well. The P2 (based on 5150), the D2 (based on Diezel VH4), and the M2 (based on JCM800) are probably my favorites. Plus, they have really flexible outputs options so you can run em as just preamps into a power amp or cab IR, a drive output to put in front of a clean amp, or a cab sim output to run totally direct.

Bro, awesome video, I'm still using my DOD fx86 death metal through the effects loop of the boss ns2 noise suppressor, lots of people complain that it's too noisy but, if you use a noise gate with it, you can get it to sound amazing through any amplifier, you just need to tweak it, it sounds just as good as the grindstein if you set it right, there's no gain control on the pedal either, you just have your level, bass, mids and treble. 🤘🤘🤘

I used a Earthquaker Devices Acapulco Gold (power amp distortion pedal) pushed with a OD pedal into a 70w solid state power amp for rehearsal a while ago. Sounded very good but wasn't that loud, I had to use all the volume the power amp had to offer to be heared.
