A few things I learned from building this rig: 1. The cabinet running at 16ohms may not give as much headroom as you'd like, I think if I were to rebuild it I'd go with an 8ohm cab, or something that can run in stereo so I can pump a bit more wattage into the cabinet. 2. The wheels added to the TM212 make it wayyyy easier to transport, but it isn't a super deep cabinet. So the higher centre of gravity makes it a bit tippy. I think a deeper cabinet may provide more stability. That being said, no rig is ever "complete," and I think this is a great start for my wife on her own full guitar rig, and it'll make gigging/touring so easy. I think this is still a great combination, especially while playing locally when you have to load all your gear into the trunk of someone's car. You really can't beat the weight and portability of this setup. Please let me know what rig you would build in the comments!
What if you built a cab, with wheels of course, that was tall and deep enough to mount a full size amp, like a rectifier or peavey xxx or 5150 or whatever, just a full size amp, and mount it inside the bottom of the cab and have your 2x12 or 2x10 above the amp. Basically, it would be a half cab, but the weight would be on the bottom and the speakers on top. Just one half cab. Amp inside. With wheels. And handles. Ya know?
Assuming that cab has 2 Vintage 30, 8 ohm drivers, they must be wired in series to run at 16 ohms. You should be able to wire them in parallel instead to make it run as a 4 ohm load. Hopefully that's a nice easy fix.
It also looks like you could move the casters out front to back another 1/2" or so each so you have a wider footprint. Unfortunately, this would lead to more holes.
I want a wife that I can discuss live rigs with! My 2 cents-Matrix poweramp-light as a feather and can clear a room. Worth every penny. Grew up hauling a full stack and a 12 space rack with a 1000 pound power amp. Im an old man now down to a 4 space gator wheelie case . Fractal into Matrix into 2 old ADA 2x12 slants (16ohm v30s-so 8 per cab). Small stage I only need 1 cab -carried in my right hand and pull the rack handle with left hand! Fractal is the heaviest component in my rig. Love small rigs! Tried some neo mag drivers in the cabs to shave off more weight but went back to V30's. Great to see a new vid from you two pop up in my feed-cheers!
Sweetwater is a very good company. I remember the level of customer service I got from them when I purchased a PRS McCarty Ten-Top. Been a lifelong customer and will continue to do so.
Pro tip for someone who's had to load his 212 countless places. Squat and bear hug it from the front instead of from the back. It'll be less awkward. The weight tends to be a little bit more forward on those cabs, and the open back leaves lots of grabbing room. The top handle on those things tend to be useless in my opinion.
That old set up was not broke. Modeler through a Mesa Stereo power amp and Mesa 2x12. Carrying that thing would kill me too. You know. If I was a talented working musician and had to take my gear anywhere... Thanks for the update in the comments about what worked and did not. There may be less tipsy options for the casters? Good job on taking the time to bolting them down on the inside of the cab.
That Gator pedalboard looks slick and great choices for the power amp and cab. The one thing that you may want to change is the speakers in the cab. If she's using the cab sims in the Pod, then the V30s are coloring the already colored sound. Using some FRLR speakers (Celestion has an awesome one) will give a flat response and still feel like a guitar speaker - designed specifically for amp modelers.
holy shit! bro i know her, she gave me music lessons like 3 years ago at a place called “Long and Mcquade” i immediately recognised her face. and i remember him because my name is Dean too! so crazy.
Dean Lamb's rig building is an awe-inspiring masterpiece of sonic craftsmanship. The way he seamlessly integrated the Seymour Duncan Powerstage 200 to elevate the already incredible tones of the Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister 212 cabinet showcases his keen understanding of sonic architecture. Adding wheels to the cabinet not only demonstrates his practicality but also his attention to detail in ensuring both mobility and aesthetics. The inclusion of the Line 6 Pod into the setup further highlights Dean's commitment to sonic versatility, allowing him to effortlessly explore a spectrum of tones. His rig is a testament to his dedication, technical prowess, and artistic sensibility. Dean Lamb's rig isn't just a collection of equipment; it's a testament to his musical vision and technical finesse, resulting in a sound that's nothing short of astonishing.
Personally dean I was in a deathcore band called risen from hells ashes and I at first had a rocktron piranha pre amp running into a cheap amp tube head that I switched to a Marshall JVM and still used my rocktron piranha
i plan on using sweetwater to order my first 8 string next year. never thought id buy one honestly but your music inspired me to go for it and learn some of Archspires songs!
The rig I use for my band live is very similar. I use a Helix LT with an Acoustic B300HD bass head as a power amp and a DV Mark Vertical 2x12 cab. For the Amp, I plug into the input rather than the FX loop because the amp is pretty transparent and the 5 band EQ comes in handy when a room sounds weird, but I don't want to tweak Helix patches. The Amp is only $200 and is very loud. I don't have to run it past half for most shows and we have a very loud drummer. In regards to the cab, the Neodymium speakers and fairly light construction make it SUPER light (about 26 lbs). It also comes in a horizontal layout if that's preferred. This kind of rig is really the way to go when compactness, simplicity, and price are major concerns. The SD Powerstage is a bit pricy, so I strongly recommend the B300HD as a cheaper alternative. I love the content BTW! I saw Archspire last year in Portland OR and you guys were great!
Same, but I just use a line 6 frfr cab. Power amp is built in already. I'd have a smaller rig if I wasn't obsessed with pedals. I run a pretty big pedal board into my helix
mmh, with caster , you want to get them close to the edges, at least sideways, cause with the swivel, they get smaller footprint (due to the offset of swivel ~~), and its easy to tip the box over, particular for something that is thin and tall.
Could’ve looked into the Laney FRFR cab. I’m wanting to get one for simplicity myself. I also use the pod go and it would plug straight into the cab and it has a DI out! Looks to be solid, but I’ve personally never used it.
Looks good, big fan but You might think about putting some biship tape under those coasters or maybe some cauck around the bolt threads to make sure they are sealed airtight otherwise those holes you drilled all the way thru the cab can really effect the tone.
Excellent cab choice sir , that what's shaping the final tone. I've done live setup for professional artist using that signal chain. So much clarity , sits in the live mix excellently . Now he can hear his voice better and hear the chords clearer.
I can’t believe you had Sweetwater sponsor this and she still kept that pod go. But nice job on that Duncan. I run my quad cortex through that. It’s amazing
While not cheap, you guys can pull those heavy V30's out of the cab and replace with some neodymium magnet speakers. They weigh a fraction of what these weigh and sound every bit as good.
Very nice build! I have been carrying to shows for many years already only a pedalboard that has the Powerstage 170, Mooer GE200 and a Polytune mini tuner. Zero problems and great sound. Never gonna carry a a tubehead along anymore unless I have a roadie haha.
Also, stereo power amps are best for stereo effects separation with at least two speakers. Stereo amps are not used for two guitars. You can rewire the 2x12 for stereo.
after seeing what you got to work with now, i got a think on for what i'd choose, probably not what you go for, i'm only part way through the vid. class-d, modelling preamp and my stereo speakers and a replacement speaker for each, it takes 12" speakers, so proper guitar speakers would be a fine swap, maybe a programmable digital crossover, yada yada. they already mount on my e-drum stand... that i repurposed from speaker stands anyway, i only use 100watts per channel, they can take 500 each, changing them to handle guitar pleasantly would be easy.
Actually this video is really useful, keeping out the preconceived ideas about the fact that you absolutely need a pair of 4x12 to be loud enough to play in a mid-size venue.
You should have swapped the mesa cab to neodymium magnet speakers. They are a 1/4 of the weight and you still keep the killer sound of the mesa cab. You could have dropped cab weight by 40-50% with neo speakers.
I love the excitement to do this for claine. It's really cool of you and sweetwater to do this as well it turned out really well. I think all speaker cabinets should just have castors that are removable if for some odd reason you don't want them on
Awesome video and congratulations on the new rig!!! quick suggestion: if you haven’t thought of it already, maybe replace the Celestion 30s with two Celestion neo cream back speakers….. or any other neo type speaker? I have the neo celestion cream back, 60 W and those are usually about 4 pounds lighter than the usual speaker. Cheers!!! 😀
Using pliers to tighten bolts? Good way to round the heads. You mentioned tape measures, reminded me of a cool trick. Take the blade of the tape and fold it over to what the year would be 124 for 2024. Then look back at the year you were born, the other side of the tape will show your age for this year. So me for example 84 and 40.
dude the Ikea ruler is so real. I recently made a very important measurement for an upcoming move and realized the only thing that wasn't already in storage was a 6" purple transparent ruler that I'm pretty sure belonged to my sister in like 3rd grade
You should ask people to send in videos of their current rigs and you could do the whole sweetwater "what I would do’ bit in reply to them, as this was pretty cool.
The editing had some great small touches, like thePimp My Ride vibes, filming Claire knocking at the door the well-paced background music that you often see on popular RUclips channels. Coming from you, it actually made me laugh! Because I'm not entirely sure if you did it because you wanted a quality video, or because you wanted to joke/parody it a bit. I'm assuming it's a bit of both but either way good stuff!
That is a cool pedal board love the color. And it's good to know 2x12 is loud enough. After traveling overseas I realized it good to have a fly rig. So I've got a pedal board with and guitar setup. I'm just going to plug in directly to the PA if I gig .

@@reav3rtmfor me personally, I just prefer having my own cab. I might use it as my monitor if I send to a PA for the main sound, and it can double as my bass players amp if his craps out (he also uses a helix). I do agree with you though, she doesn't "need" a cab, but I can understand why she would want one anyways.
It surprised me when you went with the HK cab. Knowing that you wanted a lightweight 2x12, I was assuming from the get-go that you would have gone with an EVH 2x12. The EVH 2x12 seems to be an extremely popular option in a lightweight 2x12. So much so that it just automatically pops into my head when thinking lightweight 2x12.
May I add one thing: If you set the castors up as two with brakes and two without instead of four without, you would have given the setup a massive practical edge.
I keep seeing comments like this, but after years of playing clubs with cabs without locking casters, I have literally never had a cab move a fraction of an inch. I think people are trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.
For real. Also how do they not have a pile of V30 loaded Traynor 2x12 cabs with a vintage silver grill cloth option and a modern black grill cloth option so all of Canada can be running those instead of importing cabs from Sweetwater and Harley Benton cabs from Europe. Seems like a no brainer.
