Protestant View of Justification: Luther and the Reformation with R.C. Sproul

  • Both Protestants and Roman Catholics affirm that faith in Jesus Christ is a necessary condition for justification. Where we disagree is whether sinners are justified before God by faith alone. What does Scripture say? In this message, R.C. Sproul explains the doctrine of justification by faith alone, a biblical teaching so near the heart of the gospel that Martin Luther called it the article upon which the church stands or falls.

I also am Roman Catholic and I always enjoyed listening to Sproul ( when he's not with McArthur). I think a better understanding of the Roman Catholic view is that our initial justification is by grace alone through receiving the gift of faith. However once we are given the gift we are required to use the talents of charity given to us by God. If we do not use the gift of charity graced to us by Christ then we can be cut off from Christ. Works don't add to a scale of righteousness but they cooperate in the God's gift of changing our sinful nature. Protestants view the word justification only from the legal standing view of not guilty. Rome can use imputed righteousness to state that we are declared not guilty by our faith but the Roman view also shows that Christ also does truly heal us through infusion

    Romans 5:18-19
18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Christ’s righteousness is imputed to me and my sins to him. A divine transaction in Gods mercy and Grace, Blessed beyond measure.

The age of the audience is telling. In my own church, our SS has mostly the same audience. There are some youth there, primarily college/seminary students. I remember when Francis Schaeffer was traveling and giving lectures, the audience was mostly young with a scattering of older attendees.

Romans specifies that the ascent of faith "shows his righteousness, because in His divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed." But what about sins committed after the ascent of faith? That is what Catholic view of cooperative grace is. After the ascent of faith, we must align our will with that of God for as John 3:36 states "whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God's wrath." Catholics are justified by faith but then that justification is ours to lose. I liken it to a 16 year old who receives a car as a gift. The gift is free but if he does not maintain it, it is his to lose.

If any man sins, we have an advocate with the father. Jesus Christ the righteous. Christ as our high priest, author and finisher of our faith, captain of our salvation, ever intercedes for us. Jude lays out how God is able to present us without spot and blemish. 1 Peter 1 lays out how God keeps us by His power through faith. That faith that Christ has given us, who has also given us bold access to the throne room of grace to receive help in the time of need.
Paul himself struggled with sin, at the end of Roman’s 7 we see this. We are still in this flesh that must put on immortality. That’s why we are called to put away the flesh and walk in the spirit. We are called to abide in Christ for apart from him we can do nothing. The reality is, is that you will sin. We are still in this sinful flesh that is against God. When Christ died, he paid for ALL your sins. Every single one. If he didn’t, then you would go to hell. There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Another thing, is disobeying Christ in that passage I believe means faith. If you don’t believe in Christ, you have no remission of sins, you’re in your sins and the wrath abides on you. Romans 6:17 and Roman’s 10:16
That can help with how believing is obeying. Not “working obeying”but believing and not rejecting the gospel. John 3:17-19 lays out how not believing is condemnation, and we are all under condemnation apart from Christ because our deeds are evil. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The law is the knowledge of sin. Christ came to redeem us from the curse of the law. To reject this, is to disobey and to be condemned with the wrath abiding on you. That’s why Jesus said, I am the way, truth and life, no man cometh unto the father but be Me.

Do as Jesus says "follow the commandments"
John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments
John 14: 21He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him
John 15: 10If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. 11These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

Isn’t the ground for salvation “election”? In Calvinism, “election” will result in that person having faith and therefore justified. So how can faith be the grounds when in fact election is the grounds according to Calvinism?

Great question. You will find the answer to your question in Ephesians 2:9. Faith is not of your own doing. Saving faith is given to the elect by God himself.

What is it that eats at you so you need to traverse to evangelical sites and comment as you do ? You are upset that the Catholic religion has lost power isn’t it, you believe they are the gateway to salvation and yet there system of religion which is not to be found in scripture corrupts Gods word and closes the door to salvation, yet here you are fighting for people to remain lost and you think people are going to be swayed by your little acid drop ??

I'm not saying Calvinism is wrong, but wouldn't it be at least ethical to notify viewers that Sprouls teaches from a Calvinistic point of view? Perhaps most importantly, that all humans are predetermined by God before birth to be either saved or damned.
In my opinion, that's a pretty important thing for viewers to know and be informed about before watching one of his videos.

I believe I'm a fairly well-read & educated person, but I haven't the foggiest what you were saying in the second half of your reply.
Admittedly, I am quite lacking when it comes to Christian theology. It would seem particularly so when it comes to Calvinism.
In the future it might be helpful to explain yourself so laypeople like myself can understand what you're communicating.
Thankfully though, it would seem my salvation is not dependent on an understanding of Calvinism. Afterall, God has already taken care of that, right? 😉
