The Insanity of Luther: The Holiness of God with R.C. Sproul

- Martin Luther wrestled with God's holiness and man's sinfulness to the extent that it drove him to despair. This struggle caused him to even cry out: "Love God? Sometimes I hate him." In this lecture, Dr. Sproul recounts Luther's struggle and explains how sinful people can stand in the presence of a holy God-only through a righteousness that He provides in Jesus Christ.
This is the 4th message in a series on God's holiness by R.C. Sproul. See other videos in the series: • The Holiness of God - ...

You know, R.C. always thought of himself as more of a teacher than a pastor. That is why he spent much of his time in theological academia, teaching at the college and seminary level, rather than becoming a pastor of a local church body (although in later years until his passing he was pastor at St. Andrews in Sanford Florida). But in my estimation this man was, perhaps unknowingly on his part, one of the best pastors of modern times when he was teaching. He had a way of communicating the gospel that was readily received by the listener on whatever level the listener stood.
According to Matthew Henry, these are the definitions of a teacher and of a pastor (Rom. 12:7):
Pastors and teachers are the same office (Eph. 4:11), but the particular work is somewhat different.
Teaching is the bare explaining and proving of gospel truths, without practical application, as in the expounding of scripture.
Pastoring is to apply gospel truths and rules more closely to the case and condition of the people, and to press upon them that which is more practical.
It seems to me that teachers are more like evangelists (giving the gospel message of salvation) and pastors are more like shepherds (feeding the flock to help it grow, and protecting the flock against false doctrine). And if I am right, our churches are in dire need of pastors!
The more I listened to him the more I believe he was the greatest philosopher of the 20th century.
We may never have another.
@@richardlopez4563 What gets me is that he is very "down to earth" in his approach, all the while having his affections on things above.....I'm not sure which one was the catalyst for the other; but in it all I think we have an example to follow.

@Deb Harris you're going to argue with Matthew Henry?! His 6 volume Commentary series is unsurpassed in the almost 300 years since it was penned. BUT, Deb, I suppose you are more "enlightened".
Sproul did his homework in studying Luther. His portrayal was extremely dramatic and he drove the point home as no other. What a wonderful and powerful message. Thank God.

R C Sproul, how much he is missed, his strength of conviction and love for Truth, he was a man who raised high his God and Godly living.
I miss him but it’s great to know he is happy happy joyful in heaven - no tears, no sorrow...
Can anyone understand the amount of research it takes to have such a clear picture of an individual who died centuries ago? RC was one of a kind, and I know he is enjoying every bit of his eternity w Christ right now.

Luther may have had moments of deep depression, but he was not insane. It shows God used him in spite of his human frailty.
Indeed, as He does with us all.
Brought to tears . . . tears of understanding . . love, joy, compassion, awakening, humility, enlightenment . . tears of overwhelming gratitude for the LOVE of my LORD and SAVIOR, sacrificed for my sake, Son of Almighty GOD, JESUS,
Everything he wanted to communicate was in his head, no need to refer to his written material on that desktop while he was teaching.
Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis. Insanity is a legal term. He was someone who could translate the Bible in such rapid order, yet fall into despair (depression) for months. He was an example of a genius with mental health issues who was able to survive to old age rather than commit suicide in his youth. And while he lived he was able to be productive, indeed a revolutionary, his works changing the world.
I think Luther could've been on the spectrum. He became hyperfixated on the gospel.
My favorite teacher. I learn more from him in just one lecture than I could in 10 hours from anyone else. He keeps your attention focused and your appetite for the gospel wet. Incredible teacher and wonderful man of God.
Luther's experience with the study of Law guided him later on as he realized The Truth of Christ. Amen‼️
This was a good, clear gospel presentation. How wonderful that I was born in this time in history when I can hear R. C. Sproul, though I have never been in his presence. I look forward to meeting him one day.
VenetianSnus needs prayer. All -- please pray for him! I read RC Sproul's book "The Holiness of God" several years ago and this was the definite turning point in my Christian life. As an uninformed Christian who knew very little about God and His character -- this one realization revolutionized my walk with Him. He IS worthy! He IS holy! He IS Almighty! And someday all creation will witness His majesty -- deservedly so. The Almighty more than deserves our worship and adoration and I personally can thank RC Sproul for opening my eyes to God's worth and holiness. Thank you, RC!

Strife! Read Paul for yourself…Luther was picking and choosing verses out of context to appease himself not others…death and destruction followed…

I’ve read Romans, and I’ve read selections of Luther’s writings; I know of no competent theologian who has ever accused Luther of what you have; even his 16th century adversaries acknowledged Luther’s extraordinary theological talent.
@@premapriti8888 you do realize that Paul’s life, from a temporal standpoint, became exponentially worse AFTER his conversion, right?
Now I understand why RC Sproul was one of the greats.
Right up there with Spurgeon, Edwards, and all the other pillars of the faith.
Luther is a totally biblical type of character. The difference is that we have much more information about Luther's character and behaviour. If we had the same insight into the lifes of certain old testament characters we would realise that they had similar issues. It's these kind of flawed people God likes to use for his good purposes.
Luther is biblical in his sinfulness. And also his opposition to God. But there is no evidence whatsoever that God used Luther for anything but purification of his church.
@@bridgefin Luther did not "purify" anything. He was an antisemite who called for the death of Jews and was likely possessed by a demon. Luther himself claimed to speak to the devil every night. Unfortunately, Luther has led millions of "Christians" into heresy.
@@mosesking2923
Luther did not but he was used by God to show the Church that it needed to reform. That came about after Luther's rebellion. As God uses satan to tempt the faithful to show them their need for repentance and right living, so God used Luther to point out that things were a mess and in need of reform. Had Luther actually been an instrument of reform WITHIN the church I am sure he would be a saint today. Instead he rebelled and I fear that he was condemned as a result.
@@bridgefin God is a deity of order, not chaos. Because of Luther's actions, there are over 300 communions of Protestantism which don't agree on even basic dogma. Even Luther himself called Swingli "a devil" because Swingli denied the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Ironically, Luther would condemn the vast majority of Protestants today. Now look at all the original protestant countries: England, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Scotland....all atheist countries. The reformation was a failure with Luther as its ring leader.
@@mosesking2923
No debate. But the Catholic Church did not wake up to the need for reform until Luther after which they couldn't avoid it. Then the real reform occurred. All that satan does is evil but God still uses him. Same with Luther.
Amazing ....excellent summary ...I saw several documentaries films ...all about him trying to absorb his fire...but you spoke like a real lawyer...you proved that God is still in the business of raising people like Luther❤❤
still one of the best things ive ever listened to, blessings friends
Pray for me peeps I know what Luther felt like,Luther would nail a hundred thesis on most Lutheran churches today ✝️
You mean anti-lutheran churches?
I am also prepared to die for the gospel.
Glory to God.
Luther reminds of me a lot of Paul and his struggle in Romans 7.
But thanks be to God through our LORD JESUS CHRIST.
He was delivered for our sins and was raised to make us righteous simply by faith alone!
Thank you God, thank you
Luther was so honest. Almost impossible was it for him to sew fig leaves on himself. He is a great friend and helper to me! At times when I am depressed his words pull me up to my feet, such as when he reminds me of this” your depression is none other than the flaming arrows of Satan and his emissaries”.
When Luther said the ten commandments were stupid, did that pull you up to your feet? When Luther said Jesus fornicated with Mary Magdalene, the woman at the well, and the woman caught in adultery, did that pull you up to your feet?
Don't underestimate the usefulness of depression. Many a time God has used my depression to spur my prayers, as the sorrow enabled me to see/feel more acutely the evils in the world and the waywardness of the church.
I have often praised Him for the sensitivity depression has afforded me. It has blessed me, and enriched my prayers tremendously!
@@GeorgePenton-np9rh Here the law of Moses has its place. It is no longer binding on us because it was given only to the people of Israel.
To be sure, the Gentiles have certain laws in common with the Jews;
This is written by nature into their hearts.
This is why this entire text does not pertain to the Gentiles. I say this on account of the enthusiasts. For you see and hear how they read Moses, extol him, and bring up the way he ruled the people with commandments. They try to be clever, and think they know something more than is presented in the gospel; so they minimize faith, contrive something new, and boastfully claim that it comes from the Old Testament. They desire to govern people according to the letter of the law of Moses, as if no one had ever read it before.
But we will not have this sort of thing. We would rather not preach again for the rest of our life than to let Moses return and to let Christ be torn out of our hearts.
So, then, we will neither observe nor accept Moses. Moses is dead. His rule ended when Christ came. He is of no further service.
We will regard Moses as a teacher, but we will not regard him as our lawgiver-unless he agrees with both the New Testament and the natural law. Therefore it is clear enough that Moses is the lawgiver of the Jews and not of the Gentiles.
Luther's Works W 35:164-165
Christ… is entirely without sin and the Head of the righteous, who owes no debt to the Law at all and needs no instruction as to what He should do, who already does all things even more abundantly than the Law directs.
Luhter’s Works 27.231
For Christ is innocent so far as His own Person is concerned; therefore He should not have been hanged from the tree. But because, according to the Law, every thief should have been hanged, therefore, according to the Law of Moses, Christ Himself should have been hanged; for He bore the person of a sinner and a thief-and not of one but of all sinners and thieves. For we are sinners and thieves, and therefore we are worthy of death and eternal damnation. But Christ took all our sins upon Himself, and for them He died on the cross. Therefore it was appropriate for Him to become a thief and, as Isaiah says (53:12), to be “numbered among the thieves.”
And all the prophets saw this, that Christ was to become the greatest thief, murderer, adulterer, robber, desecrator, blasphemer, etc., there has ever been anywhere in the world. He is not acting in His own Person now. Now He is not the Son of God, born of the Virgin. But He is a sinner, who has and bears the sin of Paul, the former blasphemer, persecutor, and assaulter; of Peter, who denied Christ; of David, who was an adulterer and a murderer, and who caused the Gentiles to blaspheme the name of the Lord (Rom. 2:24). In short, He has and bears all the sins of all men in His body-not in the sense that He has committed them but in the sense that He took these sins, committed by us, upon His own body, in order to make satisfaction for them with His own blood.
Martin Luther, On Galatians 3:13 (Luther’s Works 26:277)

Justification by faith alone has been very freeing. Seeing how sinful I am- fills me with dread. I want to work for my salvation. But I can never do it.
Understanding the gospel has helped me stop doubting my salvation daily.
Except when James 2:24 says this

To fully understand Luther you have to realize that he wasn't just a religious reformer (had no intention of forming the Lutheran Church-he hated that term) but was also the Father of German Nationalism. He was a Patriot as well as a reformer. Whatever indulgences were theologically they along with church tithes and taxes were a financial burden to his country.

A good orator.
Paul had a pretty severe reaction to a light at one time too.
He made it all so clear that man is saved by God's grace alone and His righteouness made us right and in peace with God, nothing else could. What a joy to know and being convinced that a sinner like me could be made righteous in His righteousness, and though I am a sinner he died for my sins, His grace saved me though I do not merit His love and salvation. But He did it all, for sinners like me. For I can never merit His salvation, peace and righteousness on my own, my deeds nor works for Him. God in His own righteousness, holiness and grace alone, accepted me as I am, a sinner who put my trust and hope in His holiness and righteousness, and by His grace I am a free man, freed from the burden of sins and guilt. A free man in His righteousness and grace. What a liberating message this has been. Today at 23:05 the truth shared by this speaker through the power of the Holy Spirit, I am writing this conviction; that I am a free man, by God's grace alone through my acveptance of His Son, who died for me while I was still a sinner, He paid it all on the cross a thousands of years ago. Yet today, this message struck me with the reality, a liberating knowledge that I could be saved by faith in His Son, through His grace alone, and I am made right with God through His righteousness alone. I can't wait to share this wonderful liberating message with anybody who want to be free of guilt and sins. There is a way to be right and be at peace with God, and I have just seen it. Glory be to God alone. May He bless you and your ministry to reach the lostbsouls of the world.

Good point. It IS better communication to present your point, then expound, then wrap it up. In Communications, that’s known as “tell them what you’re going to tell them, then tell them, then tell them what you told them”.
That way, people can follow where you’re going to lead them. You have to give them your main points- your thesis, your context first, just a short sentence or two or three, then lay out all the details, then summarize it. That way they get the most out of the message. Communications 101, Day 1.

ML lived in dark times and he had to rely only on Scripture, and his faith and conviction to stand against Roman church and Pope..unfair (with hindsight benefits today) to judge him by today's standard. Aren't we all little hypocrites inside??
Are you accusing RC Sproul of judging Luther harshly? He thought highly of him and it absolutely comes through in this teaching.
He wasn't insane he was RIGHT.
