Warning Against Bid'ah - Shaykh Saami As-Suqayr
Bid'ah (innovation) is any belief, statement, or action through which a person seeks to draw closer to Allah, but which has no basis in the Islamic Legislation. And know that anyone who innovates in the religion of Allah falls into various evils and prohibitions, including the following:
1. His action involves denying what is indicated by the statement of Allah ﷻ: "Today I have perfected your religion for you" (Qur'an 5:3).
2. His innovation implies advancing ahead of Allah and His Messenger by introducing into the religion what is not part of it and overstepping its boundaries. Allah ﷻ says: "And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah - it is those who are the wrongdoers" (Qur'an 2:229).
3. His innovation entails making himself a partner with Allah in legislating. Allah ﷻ says: "Or have they partners who have ordained for them a religion to which Allah has not consented?" (Qur'an 42:21).
4. His innovation necessitates that he has made the Messenger of Allah ﷺ either ignorant of this act being part of the religion or aware of it but concealing it. Far removed is he ﷺ from that! In the first case, he accuses the Messenger ﷺ of ignorance, and in the second, of concealing the truth and Islamic Legislation.
5. One of the evils of innovations is that his innovation leads to people having the audacity to oppose the Shari'ah of Allah and introducing into it what is not from it in matters of beliefs and acts of worship, which is one of the greatest transgressions.
6. His innovation leads to the division and fragmentation of the Ummah, where each person or group adopts a methodology they follow and accuse others of deficiency or neglect. This leads the Ummah into what Allah ﷻ has forbidden, namely, division.
7. His innovation leads him to be occupied with his innovation, neglecting what is prescribed. Thus, it is said: "No people introduce an innovation but they destroy an equivalent part of the Islamic Legislation."
