How to European Mount a DEER Skull

  • Step by step how to do your own european mount at home. This process takes patience, but the results are unreal! DIY euro mounts can turn ugly really quick, but these tips will help your skull come out perfect every time!
    HOW TO:
    - Skin face, remove eyes
    - Wrap antlers with plastic wrap and secure with tape (do NOT submerge or discoloration will occur)
    - Add about 2 TBS of DAWN soap (or any dish soap) to pot of water
    - Bring water to a low simmer DO NOT BOIL
    - Allow skull to "boil" for ~5 hours (depends on water temp, again DO NOT BOIL)
    - Remove as much tissue as possible
    - Repeat as many times as needed
    - Pressure washing will help remove tissue, but will damage fragile nasal bones
    - If you're trying to keep the nasal bones, you will spend a LOT of time cleaning out the tissue. I recommend a long very skinny screw driver and needle nose pliers.
    - Allow to dry completely (~12 hours)
    - Apply 40 Volume Developer all over skull (avoid antlers)
    - Allow to sit MINIMUM 8 hours, but up to 24 hours depending on how white you want your skull

That whole earbud will pop out and take allot of that meat off in that area. Makes a huge difference. Needle nose pliers will pop it out.

Turned out great Allie. That process is exactly how I do my euros. Baking powder in with the soap when simmering helps with the removal of the gunk. Always enjoy your videos have a BLESSED day

Allie, nice job! I remember when I did my first one. It turned out great too. I have, when things are frozen, used the shower and the jet option on the shower head to squirt and wash the loose particulate off before and after scrapping. It works great. I use a steel eating spoon and a butter knife more than any other tools. The brain can be a giant pain, but often HOT water will dissolve it, like from a shower head. Just make sure all the big chunks don't go down the drain, pretty sure it wouldn't be good for the plumbing. Again, I think you did a great job! Thanks for sharing.

Also, the shower head jet option does the entire nose cavity for you and perfectly preserves those beautiful spirel nasel bones.

A small electric power washer works awesome for getting the meat off from it. Hemostats work great for getting the brain out. Once it’s whitened, I brush the antlers and skull with a couple coats of mop and glo. It keeps it shiny and makes dusting a breeze. Great job as always on your videos!

Great video, great channel. Wanted to share a tip:
I did my first Euro mount this year. I took a nice 10 point in December. I had taken a doe earlier and butchered both which kept me very busy throughout November and December. I was so busy that I kept putting off cleaning the skull for the 10 point. I was afraid I had waited too long and took a long shot at salvaging. I placed the skinned skull in a 5 gallon bucket of water, dropped in a “tidy bowl “ type toilet cleaner and let it do its thing. I picked a discreet corner of the garage and changed water and replaced the same cleaning disk a few times. I don’t have dogs so I was able to let it soak for a few weeks. Pulled it, grabbed some remaining brain matter with forceps from my tackle box and power washed and it came out great. Here are the benefits: the toilet cleaner not only loosened the flesh it also whitened it in a very uniform manner. Since I did not boil I did not weaken or compromise any bone structure, and finally I had no issue peeling away the hide around the antlers that I could not get initially with my knife. Here are the cons: having a deer skull unfinished in a bucket of water for weeks will likely test your relationships, I agree the brain matter is the toughest part of the process so I took a gross job and stretched it out over weeks, finally if you’ve made a great harvest you may not want to wait weeks to get that trophy on display.
This is what worked for me. Contrary to most experiences a lazy approach paid off this time, I think I will do it this way from here out. Hope this alternative may help someone.

Removed eyes and brain 1st. Don't boil you simmer. Good job on the antler wrapping. Pull the bone for the ears to get meat and fat off. Get a needle nose and pull that center cartilage from the nose when hot. Very thorough video. Nice to see it being done more properly then most do it. Enjoy following yall. Pressure washer for the back or wire brush. Remove brain first with spade bit, air hose, water pressure...So good to see a Woman appreciate this kind of stuff. So cool. Saran wrap your skull and keep in front of heat source. I see oul still holding on the gland holes forhead.

If time is not an issue: to get to just before where you go inside and start the whitening stage, - I cut the head off the dear - bury the whole thing so nothing is above ground (don't want squirrels eating on the antlers) - and dig it up about 1 year later. I have done over 10 this way and all I have to do is wash it off with a hose.

Use a electric power washer. It blows everything off it quick 👍🏼

I usually take mine to a car wash, helps for those not wanting to drag out their pressure washer in the cold

Needle nose pliers, a power washer, and oxyclean. Turns a 2 day process into a 4-5 hour process.

I understand that there are taxidermists who have bugs that can clean up the skull. But, that really isn't DIY sending it to them. Thanks.

This process takes a total of an hour and half with a pressure washer and end product is the same
