- A playthrough of Sunsoft's 1999 license-based platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy Color, Looney Tunes.
Looney Tunes is an old-school style side-scrolling hop'n'bop platformer that stars, as you might've already guessed, the Looney Tunes crew. It's got a ton of variety to it despite its short playtime, with each stage giving you control of a different American cartoon icon, including Daffy Duck, Tweety, Porky Pig, Taz, Speedy Gonzalez, Road Runner, and finally Bugs Bunny for the finale. It's also packed with cameo appearances by other characters, my favorite being Elmer Fudd as the last boss.
This Game Boy Color game is also a colorized remake of what was, at the time of its release, a seven year old Game Boy game.
Rather than further rehashing what I've already said about the game, you can check out my write-up and playthrough of the original 1992 monochrome Game Boy version here: • Looney Tunes (Game Boy...
The gameplay is identical between versions, but this DX-style remake is a top quality conversion of an already excellent game. It doesn't look nor feel like a quick 'n cheap cash-in. In fact, if you didn't already know that it wasn't a native GBC game, I'd wager that you probably wouldn't be able to tell.
The style is perfect given the limitations of the GBC, and despite the low resolution, the quality of the visuals handily exceed anything that you would've seen on the NES or the Master System. The GBC's screen, with its sharper contrast and faster LCD response times, makes for a dramatically improved experience. What was a maddeningly difficult game on the original Game Boy is, on the GBC, one that remains challenging but feels feels far fairer and more fun as a direct result of improvements in display technology. Screen ghosting is nowhere near as likely to get you killed here as it was in the 1992 original.
Both versions of Looney Tunes are great games, and it's quite a feat that the original game still felt fresh as it did with a new coat of paint so many years later. Both are classic, but unless you're a compete slave to your nostalgic impulses, the GBC game is the version you'll want to play.

It was already a good game when it first came out on the OG Game Boy, but man, it's amazing what some color and improved screen technology did for Looney Tunes' gameplay. Excellent remake!
Right! And nice, thanks for the video, as usual man
Can you try Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle 2 DX next. Here's the link. www.romhacking.net/hacks/944/
The added between stage mini games really don't do much for added depth though. A simple color remake was all they needed to do, and they did that, but meh on the mini games. I feel like it breaks the flow up of a game that already is short.
The "Take It Easy" message between stages was also an odd addition.
As a kid I could never get passed the Speedy Gonzales stage.
Same here, dude.
The only time I dit it was because of a spectacular bug on the piggy plane part. I killed the boss and she killed me at the same time resulting in me getting 99 lives. Couldn't have done it without this :P
i managed to beat it but then got stuck on road runners stage like i seriously think this game is just cheap on the home stretch of this game
@@R909-s9dsame thing happened to me but I got 66 lives, had to look up this video to see if it was normal or not
My favorite game when I was in elementary
same and hi ;)
@@brownwallet942 Hello! :)
Gosh. As a kid I never thought I’d get to know what level was after Road Runner.
Thank you for this ! I smiled many times and it brought much closure lol
This was amazing!
Pro tip: in the first level you can get a second weapon by going into the wall to the right when you approach the water area.
Yeah, I totally forgot about that. I grabbed it in my video of the original version. Oops.
@@NintendoComplete That was cool. Can you play Metroid 2 DX next. It's the Colorized Version.
Oh that's what it was...I knew someone else would have mentioned it already lol I wrote that thinking it was a 1up though! It's been a minute haha 😆
I had no idea you could just stand on Sylvester’s head...
Sunsoft's many Looney Tunes games during the early 90s were largely hit and miss. But, this genuinely looks good. I think Sunsoft was actually behind they one (they simply published most of them, with outside developers making them), so that's probably why this one turned out a winner.
Im 26 now but I still remember playing this motherfcking game! It was so hard that I wasn’t able to finish this when I was a kid! 😂😂😂😂
This game definitely feels like it was originally meant to be an original IP at some point, given how a lot of it seems to have barely anything to do with Looney Tunes (Like, why is Porky shooting down a witch and a giant star with a knife and fork and what’s Bugs and Elmer Fudd doing in a mayan temple??) and how similar the original designs feel to other Sunsoft games like Ufouria and Trip World.
Still, a fun little romp, even if it’s a bit too short for its own good imo, and the colorization looks really nice.
This is very true. Even as a kid I felt that the looney tunes theming was very odd. For me there's only two levels where I can feel a looney tunes vibe : the Tweetey one, and the roadrunner one. Speedy Gonzales and Bugs Bunny levels feel very very out of place consindering the theme of the game.
OOOOOOH! I HATE THAT RABBIT!
Wow, that's some difficulty spike with Speedy!
Edit: Ooh wow, Manami Matsumae did the music?! She's a pretty great composer.
0:42 lol quick boss fight with yosemite sam, like the movie and that boomerang
This was such a good game. Still holds up well too.
Mwehehehe... I played this game b4 but it's kinda difficult so I' delete it
Hello, I'd like to know if you could do a playthrough of Mickey's Dangerous Chase. That game was one of my childhood games, and also one of the best when it came to to the mouse in shorts

Wow I’m almost 29 now and I remember this game was unbeatable when I was a kid
same bro i just ordered it on ebay to see what i can do now lmaoo
@@WinnerTowing lol ayyy
I had a memory of a character dancing while shooting stars as an attack, but couldn't remember whom or from what game until I looked through my collection and found this kart. Speedy Gonzales! Of course it was him who attacked with stars while dancing! Man, this game has some weird choices. Thanks for sharing!
I swear eventually you are going to have played through every single video on this planet
I guess the programming team for this game couldn't come up with any more ideas for the final level where you play as Bugs Bunny since petty much everything in his level is petty much the same as the Speedy Gonzales level.
This game looks adorable!
Adorable? This game was the devil.
@@Visstnok biblically accurate of the game
-awesome. I never think that Game Boy come to the level so explendored.
Omg played this for so many hours as a kid ...when you first get to the water though go check out the cave to the right....there's something in there 🙂
I was 7 when I got this game years ago. It was my first non pokemon game. For my gameboy!
It’s a double surprise because i never heard of this game and even less heard of the original one.
I compare both : they really look good, but the remake is better looking.
Reminds me of the Tiny Toons GB game I had as a kid....but better. Nice variety of levels and characters.
The CunninLynguist Expect for the final level where you play as Bugs Bunny since it was petty much the same level and had the same characters as the Speedy Gonzales level.
Lots of Mario-related rip-offs here:
General gameplay is similar to Super Mario Land (1989).
The gameplay for round 3 (Porky Pig) is similar to SML's World 4-3.
Theme music for rounds 5 (Speedy Gonzales) and 7 (Bugs Bunny) similar to SML's World 1-3, 3-2 and 3-3 themes.
The bonus games for Round 2 (Tweety) and 4 (Taz) are similar to two different Super Mario 3 (1990) bonus games: slot machine (spade) and matching game (N spade).
Though not Mario-related, Round 3's (Porky Pig) bonus round is reminiscent to another Nintendo game: Balloon Fight (must avoid contact with any enemies who will pop your balloons)
Looney Tunes is a Game Boy Color game that is backward compatible with the original Game Boy. This Game Boy Color game, from 1999, is a also a colorized remake of what it was, a 7 year old original Game Boy game that was originally released in 1992.
thank u a lot
I remember playing this game
I’ve always considered stage six a do or die stage, which is saying something considering it’s the second to last. Even now as an adult, I still find those attacks tricky to dodge, plus you don’t pick up where you died like in stage three
Ah yeah that chase sequence feels like total bs half the time. I don't think I've ever managed to get through it without being on my last heart.
I was at work with my color last week and somehow beat stage 6 on my first try without losing a single heart.....it was ome of those rare gameboy moments when you just go god mode and have no idea how to replicate it again. Funny thing is tho, I got a game over with bugs on the final boss and just shut the gameboy off I was upset, cuz game over in this means you lose your score, despite inifnite continues. I beat this 100 times, but never have beat it once without having to use a continue
@@MidniteMeatBus I found the best way to beat Elmer Fudd is to stun lock him on the right side of the screen. Shift moving left and right and stay airborne. It’d be better to have a visual and I still haven’t perfected that technique. I also had no idea this game has infinite continues, I could have sworn you get three but the game doesn’t tell you
This looks quite good. Better than expected from gameboy color :-)
It's a nice little game with nice music that I didn't kno
Nostalgia
Could we name the third level as porky rosso? :v
I had the exact same fucking problem mate
I’m shocked that some of the big arcade giants did not make a Looney Tunes game. Data East would have kicked ass
How did you record this?
the graphic is especially beautiful
bro that road runner was so hard to beat
Will they have that on games boy
I love original
nice 👏👏💪
At the end credits, you can see Pepe LePew and I missed him.
Child hood memories one of the few game boy games I beat.

Mas o game boy funciona a pilha
Yheeeee
Hello dear NintendoComplete I borrow me some snippets of your visual. I hope you don't mind. Lovely Greetings VVS
> I borrow me some snippets.
Oof. If that isn't bad grammer I don't know what is.
While i love this game, it was part of my childhood. I still fine it one of the oddest Looney Tunes game out there.
It really feels like this was going to be its own thing but then the Looney Tunes IP was slapped late into development.
Still a very fun game though.
Cool
