I think one important thing that westerners should realize is that Dragon Quest was THE jrpg in Japan. Much more popular than Final Fantasy. It wasn't the first Japanese rpg (Nihon Falcom was making rpgs before DQ1) but it did innovate the aspects of what we now recognize as a traditional jrpg. Culturally, DQ is very important to Japan.
It's basically the start of the genre not because it's necessarily the first but because the term JRPG didn't exist at the time, and for a while they were referred to as "Dragon Quest Clones"
The story in that one is top notch and easily one of the best in the series if not the best. I’m playing through it right now and it’s still crazy how uniquely it approached the story
SUPER hyped to try the DQ remaster dropping. I absolutely adore DQ XI, and that game feels totally like the equivalent of JRPG comfort food. It was just so classic feeling. I haven't played any other DQ games, so the remake is looking real enticing. About to sit down with a bagel and my coffee for the AM... what a timely vid! Always great to see a new upload from the fellas.
The subtle editing with the 4:3 aspect ratio games is so good. Having the system logo on the left and something extra on the right. I didn't notice it that much at first until you got to the DQ8 footage and it was just...so good.
With a lot of jrpgs that can get outright depressing and hostile stories, Dragon Quest like that one series you know what to expect and still be surprised with its quality and its wholesome and hopeful themes.
I love how DQ also has depressing stories in it, but it presents it in such a human and careful way. I mean, I'm playing DQ 3 again right now and without spoiling too much, there is a double suicide that has a huge impact on certain characters. It's an extremely sad tale, but the world moves on around it. As morbid as it sounds, you can't stop moving forward because of that event. You have to continue to work against evil. I love how DQ teaches us to deal with grief. ❤
This post and replies really sum up DQ well. You never expect to like DQ as much as you do, and then Sylvando comes along and the whole family wants to play.
I've only played through all of XI quite recently but I can't deny that there is an undeniable charm to the games. It's not the type of RPG to give you a tutorial or cutscene every 5 seconds. All of the mechanics are intuitive but have enough depth to sustain the runtime.
There is something nice about the prospect of a series never changing much but having something unique for each entry. While it would be nice to see the developers branch out and do more things (cause I 100% believe the guys who make these games could make anything they do with this genre stand out), the fact that they don't is good for the people who have been long time fans of the series and are happy just the way it is. It honestly makes me a bit envious since I really wish we had this kind of commitment from other JRPG series' that I used to be a fan of.
They really are cozy. The stories aren't all to complicated but can still be heartwarming. The combat and levelling system are as basic as you can get with a jrpg but still have that addictive feeling. My entry into DQ was DQ9 on the DS. As a kid i probably spent more time trying to replicate dragon ball characters than actually playing the game
Played my first DQ game around this time last year and I loved it. Now I search for the old DS games every time I go to a retro shop, and I regret not getting into it when the games were cheaper.
Hope you guys had fun in Japan. Old school JRPGs are for sure my vid game comfort food. So glad we live in an era with FF Pixel Remasters and the DQ 2D HD remakes. Now if we could only get an FFT remake/remaster.
Really appreciate that, comments like this help reassure us that we shouldn’t be afraid to branch out a bit here and there as hopefully there are others like you who will still watch for the vibes regardless of the exact topic being about JRPGs exclusively or not
This is a very good point that I can relate to. For example, I've been dying for a modern yet traditional Mega Man remaster. & although I was never a Metroid fan, simply because I was to young to understand the game back when I had an SNES, Metroid Dread is one of my fav games of all time simply because it's a modern day traditional Mega Man type game. Love the vid bro!
I like Final Fantasy, but I've only beaten 4 and played halfway through 6 and 9. Earlier this year I decided to give Dragon Quest 1 a try and it was love at first sight! The simple story, the relatively simpke gameplay loop and the amazing sense of adventure were exactly the things I was looking for in an RPG. I've beaten DQ1, 2 and 4 so far. Halfway through 3. Also played about 10h of 5 and 6. Really wanna play 8 and 11. Great series!
I'll never forget seeing the art for Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 and Dragon Warrior 7 on the PS1, and INSTATLY being drawn to it. That Toriyama art style is too strong
I love dragon quest that it keeps it simple, i always try to play other turn based rpg’s and they always have to throw in some kinda hybrid turn based system pressing buttons at the right time, running around or doing combos or something. I just love old fashioned turn based. Dq8 and 11 are favorite and they are so similar in story and the areas
For me, while the stories in the series usually don’t blow anything else out of the water, the journey itself and especially the writing are what keep it fresh, keep it incredible. It’s never too serious, but never without drama and sadness(especially DQ V, holy shit). I also appreciate that for DQ XI S(and also the 3DS port) an entire recreation of the game in the style of the DS remakes was done, and can be played, effectively doubling the entire adventure! That’s serious dedication, and I’m glad that the series has never lost sight of itself.
I still love the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th titles the most. Dragon Quest has always been my favorite JRPG game. Even the Monsters series is amazing. It's simple yet feels so immersive.
Dragon Quest is a staple. That being said, much like Mash Potatoes and Gravy, it's a staple that never fails to satisfy. That being said, I'm off to go play some DQ 3. Subbed! Long live the heroes!!
For the curious, the Ys titles, Lunar (especially the original Silver Star, which has a very good mobile port these days), Grandia (1 and 2!) and Skies of Arcadia are all *ABSOLUTELY STELLAR* RPGs that you need to check out if you haven't already. All vastly underrated gems.
It captures that fairy tale or medieval romance(romance as in not relationship but whar they used to call these sorts of heroic stories) feeling in a comforting way only Final Fantasy 9 and 4 and Legend of Dragoon are also able to. It's like stepping back to that style but in the second millennium.

Ahhh yeeee a gaming broductions video, I got this and the Tyson Jake Paul fight and done with work… this is a nice Friday 👍. Hope you’re doing well bro!
JRPGs have always been my comfort food and Dragon Quest is no exception. No exception whatsoever. I only wish that the series got more love in the West but it hasn't since 1989 and that makes me mad.

@@palody_en-ja they were great! Well I can only speak for 5 and 6. Actually I’ve never played dragon quest 4 at all. In any version. I think I had a file on the nes rom when I was a kid but I don’t remember any of it. I really need to play! Though I’ll have to probably emulate the DS version. Or get the mobile version. I’ve played every dragon quest except 2-4 for some reason (and 10). I Really wanted to play the new dq3 but I can’t afford it at the moment 😔.
@@CenturianEagle DQ4 was great! I've only played the DS version, and it was a fun experience, since the game is broken into chapters and you play a different character. Highly recommended, and very easy to emulate these days, though it'd probably be a better experience to play it on a real DS/3DS.
@@palody_en-ja DQV was my first DQ. Played it after the DQ movie released on Netflix and loved the series since. One day I'll do them all. Just got DQ3 Remake
I know I probably won't get a reply but I have to ask, was the intro song to your videos inspired by "They reminisce over you" by Pete Rock? I always get nostalgic over NBA street Vol 2 because of your intro lol
I’m not sure tbh, the guy who made the beat Richie Branson takes a lot of inspiration in his work I’m sure so I wouldn’t be surprised if he has some Pete Rock influence in some of his stuff. Know exactly what song you’re talking about though lol hell yeah that song slapped so hard and it always makes me think of NBA Street 2 as well, such a good ass game
DQV, DQVIII and DQXI are some of the best JRPGs I've ever played, but weirdly enough the rest of the franchise has never really appealed to me? I tried several of the other titles, but none of them really grabbed me the same way. Maybe it's the larger focus on narrative, since I think it's pretty much universally agreed that those three I mentioned have the best stories and casts in the franchise, so the more simplistic structure of the other titles just don't appeal to me the same way.
@GamingBroductions oof 😅. Glad y'all made it back safe. I'm sure a few days will get ya back on the sleep schedule. Stay safe out there. Tokyo is looking forward to y'alls return.
It was always confort food until i learnt about what the composer is as a person. I try to dissociate the artist from the person but whenever i travel the world of DQ and find myslef being so confortable in it, the idea of of how the man is as a person screw everything.
Personally I think they will since it’s become so synonymous with the visual identity of the series now especially for a series that already prides itself on tradition and not switching things up too much. They have artists who can replicate his style pretty well so I think they’ll do that
I do love the Pokemon series for many of the reasons as I do Dragon Quest, it also gives off a very comfy and nostalgic feeling where you know what to expect
I've only been playing JRPGs for about 10 years now- hated the genre as a kid- but I've gotten so sick and jaded of generic fantasy RPGs with dragons and castles and shit. So Dragon Quest should be lame as hell to me. But its presentation and world and art are all just so cute and cozy and charming, it's actually somewhat refreshing to someone like me who prefers weird, obscure, dark, scary, and sometimes arguably terrible JRPGs. It's not interesting or unique or even groundbreaking anymore, but it’s damn chill.
Recently my partner and I emulated the ps2 version and cast it to our tv with an hdmi cable from computer to tv screen. It felt almost the same as old school, I promise.
They really should try to port it to modern consoles, I’m unsure how it’s viewed in Japan comparatively but I know in the west it’s probably tied for the most popular in the series. It’s so good, they really went all out on that one
I dunno man, dq11 was my first, and thanks to that also my last. The game was actual garbage in my eyes and the fact that everyone thought it was amazing let me know that it's not a franchise for me. I know it's a bit shortsighted but it is what it is to me.
I like the toriyama art in DQ but i could never get into the games, too basic to keep me hooked and they are very long games. It probably hits different for japanese people who played them since childhood. Before XI these games never did well in sales in the west but i can understand why
Im sorry, but it breaks my heart to think that people out there are eating grilled cheese sandwiches with white bread and/or American cheese. The world can be so cruel sometimes :/
He's missing a few DQ 1 Famicom DQ 1-4 NES DQ 3 GBC DQ VI DS DQ IX DS DQ 11 (I assume he forgot to include) Plus the dozen or so spin off games, Monsters, Heroes, Treasures, Etc.
It was comfort food. Until Square bent the knee to ESG,DEI nonsense and added ingredients thst turned the food sour and toxic. I'll stick with DQ 8. That was the last truly good game in the series.
@ yea I’m not trying to knock it or anyone who enjoyed it I guess I could have worded that better. It was very disappointing to me is what I should have said
Dude this my RUclips comfort food. It’s just a good place to come chill

My favorite dragon quest is the fifth one, what I like the most about it is the story.
The story in that one is top notch and easily one of the best in the series if not the best. I’m playing through it right now and it’s still crazy how uniquely it approached the story
Akira Toriyama 💔

It’s the quintessential RPG that must be played. It’s hard to hate. It’s the 1st ever JRPG on the NES that paved the way for so many others.
I like your Dragon Quest collection brother.
Personally, Trails is my JRPG comfort food, but for much of the same reasons you listed. Nice vid!

God I wish they would make it easy to play DQ8
I want the PS2 graphics with the 3DS content on PC/Switch.
I own the PS2 game, but man.....to actually play a PS2 now is tough.
While the series is relatively simple, sometimes thats all you nedc
I dunno man, dq11 was my first, and thanks to that also my last. The game was actual garbage in my eyes and the fact that everyone thought it was amazing let me know that it's not a franchise for me. I know it's a bit shortsighted but it is what it is to me.
It's sad they made Dragon Quest woke, even Horii was baffled by the forced changes.
The world can be so cruel sometimes :/
you skipped DQ 6
He's missing a few
DQ 1 Famicom
DQ 1-4 NES
DQ 3 GBC
DQ VI DS
DQ IX DS
DQ 11 (I assume he forgot to include)
Plus the dozen or so spin off games, Monsters, Heroes, Treasures, Etc.
will wait for a price drop, wont support dei at full price
My like was number 420. Fuck yeah 🤘
It was comfort food. Until Square bent the knee to ESG,DEI nonsense and added ingredients thst turned the food sour and toxic. I'll stick with DQ 8. That was the last truly good game in the series.
Sorry mr straight white guy
man i forgot how bad ff16 was until i saw it in this video
lol I still had some fun with it but yeah it didn’t really feel like a final fantasy game in any way unfortunately
@ yea I’m not trying to knock it or anyone who enjoyed it I guess I could have worded that better. It was very disappointing to me is what I should have said
