What do World War I, a 16th Century Italian Doctor, Coca-Cola, and a Chicago sausage maker have to do with Birth Control? Well, let’s just say the history of birth control is a very long and very odd.

Contraception and Abortion from the Ancient World to the Renaissance
By John M. Riddle
NB: On page 5 on his text, Riddle notes that the condom drew its name from a “Dr. Condom” in the court of Charles II (ruled 1660-85). He cites Norman Himes Medical History of Contraception. However further investigation of the etymology of the term shows that there isn’t a verifiable record of this figure. OED lists the origins of condom as “unknown.”

You forgot to mention when Americans tested birth control pills on Puertorican women to be sure it was safe before selling them in the US.
Wow
Yes, also many little girls in Puerto Rico began going through puberty very early, due to the birth control pill manufacturers polluting the local water supply with hormones. Another reason the EPA and the Clean Water Act were so important, and still are.
That's using people as human Guinea pigs.😠
Hence why they don't use humans for testing in such a fashion anymore
oh it's much darker than how Abigail said even. 💔 there are still impacts to this day.
Not to dismiss the content of this video, that's a cool necklace.
Omg yes. I spent half the video distracted trying to make out the details
ya
I was thinking the same. It’s from ModCloth. I have one.
I can already tell you’re really intelligent.. you are the only person so far to preface an off-topic comment by acknowledging it is in fact « off-topic »… I think that’s cool. Than again I’m a bug nerd lol
Well put :)
It's kind of sad how previous generations didn't have access to birth control and now people don't use it saying things like, "Condoms make sense less enjoyable" I wonder if all of those people who died of HIV in the 80's or women in 1930s who wished they could have options to control their number of children would feel a little sad..
easy, if he doesn't wear one tell him to GTFO
or use good condoms that don’t feel like a plastic bag
WTF?
i got my tubes tied this month (march 2019). i'm 35 and have been asking for the procedure since i was 18. I'm in the uk, which i have always thought of as a liberal country.
the surgeon asked, word for word, "are you sure your husband won't divorce you if you get this procedure? i mean do you have his permission?"
things are so much better for us than they were for our parents or theirs, but we've still got a LONG way to go.
💔
i had to wait a while before i got "fixed" too, but at least my doctor didn't ask if my husband was okay with the procedure.
Yup, in the US, I spent all of my "reproductive years" asking for permanent sterilization, and never was able to get it done. The reasons for refusal were just nuts. But that will mean you won't be able to have kids, was the outright dumbest response, but I also heard "you need to have at least two kids first," "but what if your husband wants kids," and, when I pointed out "um, I"m not married," they then shifted to, "well then absolutely not, I won't be responsible for helping you cheat your future husband out of being a father."
I finally made it to menopause, thank goodness, but with health repercussions from using the more temporary forms of BC, so I'm definitely holding a grudge over that. Since when should any adult need permission from someone else to make major life decisions like that.
Incidentally, I've been married for over 20 years, and my husband is perfectly pleased with our childless state.
we're changing as much as possible but some places are going backward...it seems? 👽🖤💚
@@miradfalco251 yeah, America is behind other similar countries in some absurd ways but mainly on a Cultural lvl and sadly, women are an "easy" target for Systemic abusers.
Doctors used to care about their clients but today are mainly customers for-profit but im even starting to research the roots of American medical Systems and yeah, not good...
1972, I would never guessed that the laws were so recent. I love your legislative timelines. Those unbiasedly shed more history about these topics than almost any other source could. Greatly appreciated!
In the 1970s when Ireland had an almost total ban on condoms (thanks to “Paul’s Epistle to the Fallopians” in the 1960s), Irish couples made makeshift condoms out of clingy plastic wrap such as Saran Wrap.
MY GOD, LYSOL AS A DOUCHE?!? No. Just... no.
I paused the video to read the articles. Horrendous how women were degraded as being dirty and blamed for poor, loveless marriages.
When I was in grad school, I ran across those ads in old magazines while doing research. I mentioned it to my mom, who told me that her mother used Lysol to douche. I think it was diluted with water, but still.
*cringes* imagine the burn... 😨
Actually, I used it as a young woman before the pill was available. Was not 100% effective in addition to the burning.
My grandmother was born in 1911 (made it to 101+ years old) and had 12 children. One time when I was visiting her and our other relatives up in those coal mining towns, my Aunts (only a few years older than me) and I were discussing birth control. We didn’t think that she could hear us until...... from her kitchen, we heard ‘If there had been birth control when I was young, I wouldn’t have had 12 kids!’ All of us turned to her two youngest sons (my Uncles, who are younger than me!) and told them..... ‘whoa, you wouldn’t have been here!’
How was linen effective at stopping disease? It's incredibly porous! Also wouldn't it.... chafe?
Sounds pretty uncomfortable to me.
I believe it was coated with wax. But probably still pretty rough, especially if it had to be tied in place.
The ribbon that was tied around the top to keep it on was linen; the sheath itself was animal intestines, which are not porous. However, they don’t stretch like latex does. There was a picture shown when it was being discussed.
@@allanrichardson1468 Actually, animal intestine condoms ARE porous, which is why they are not to be used for reducing transmission of STIs, particularly HIV. The pores are small enough that sperm can't pass through, but viruses CAN.
calichef1962 Good to know that now, but before latex it was all they had, and they didn’t know viruses existed.
Reminds me of a joke from Victorian times in England. Politician A to politician B: “My esteemed colleague will either die on the gallows or from the clap!” Politician B: “Which one would be determined by whether I embrace your principles or your mistress!”
condom = contraceptive dome
I applaud you for stating Margaret Sanger's connection to eugenics. Most people tend to skip over that important bit..
She only supported discouraging poor people and disabled ppl from having biological kids
I think many of those in the comment section who claim Danielle didn't mention that are anti-birth control trolls.
Nope, you are wrong, Christians made up false rumors about her, because they hated her for leading the path way for women to have access to artificial birth control.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! do the spanish subtitles for this videos!!! I NEED TO SHARE YOUR VIDEOS with my non speaking english people!!
Sele S Anyone can add subtitles to most videos :)
Ha,ha,ha!, Lysol for contraception... sounds like a Trump recommendation.
I wish you had included Dr Joycelyn Elders' advice, as Surgeon General, about not keeping young people in the dark about masturbation in order to help them avoid risky sexual activities. Apparently that was way too radical for the 1990's.
Very interesting episode, keep up the good work!
Origin Of Everything - You are speaking at the perfect pace! You have a lot of info to present in a small amount of time. If anyone missed anything you said, they can either rewind or listen faster lol! Keep up the Excellent work! 💜
Your channel is becoming one of my favorites. Thank you, Danielle, for such awesome videos! Always on point.
Wow. She's so smart and polite! I am absolutely in love with the comments part of the video. Truly an amazing channel
I love this channel, I have watched like 10 videos from this channel today and I want to watch more.
We need male birth control! They better hurry things up on that front.
They already tried it but the study was stopped because of side effects 🙄
@@lizmowrey9866 Yeah cause they got all the same side effects as women. Ugh
As a woman who would need to carry the pregnancy, I wouldn't rely on someone else to prevent MY pregnancy. Just not a good idea if I really don't want to be pregnant- though it would be a great secondary measure especially for men who don't want to GET someone pregnant.
@@theopkingdom3433 I would still stay on my iud but, if my partner could be on birth control as well that would be really helpful. Especially, if we just had a baby and I'm breastfeeding. I wouldnt want to be on birth control. I know a pregnancy that I carry would be my responsibility but, it would be my partner's responsibility as well. I think both men and women should be able to have the option of being on birth control. Anyways doubling up can help preventing unwanted pregnancies if one contraception fails.
Bunny Wesa Not just that.
I love your content! I like the angle that you approach your research from!
Just stopping by to say I love these videos and your presentation :)
I love your content. You give perfect information for us all! Young lady you are a great influencer for everyone! You are giving great information thru your research. Your knowledge is well received. You are very much appreciated thanks!
Love your info and enthusiasm!
I recently found out my grandma & her sisters had jobs making condoms from animal intestines during WWII. Never knew how patriotic it was until this vid though! 🙂🇺🇸
It's not.
amazing video, thank you for the great work!
I love your top!
Thank you for your work!
I've heard of the Comstock laws from "Sexplanations", I never knew it included the mailing of condoms as well!
Loved the graphics' style!
It's very entertaining to listen to you and you seem nice and smart
Please keep up the good work, it would be a shame to lose a good channel
Great video!!
omg disease control lmao i love it
also i can confirm that that's not just in mexico, in spanish in general the words for east and west are oriente and occidente, este and oeste are also common, they're kind of interchangeable
thanks for a great episode as always!
Good stuff and I love the disclaimer.
Griswold vs The State of Connecticut is one of the few supreme court cases that I remember from high school civics class. They called it the Bedroom case. I bet the state of Connecticut lawyers were laughed right out of the court room.
I was (late 1960s) in a small Army unit in S Sonoma / N Marin counties and we had a "morale" indicator which measured, among other things, AWOL and VD stats. We were small enough that they were both zero, but reporting them was required by regulations.
I love the last segment of the video, the one with clarification and correction and question from the conversation birthed from the previous video's content. It felt really effectively inducing of serendipitous tummy butterflies. (Also known in some parts of my living room as tum-butts)
❤️❤️❤️
great video as always. but where did you get the shirt it look amazing?
I absolutely love this hostess!! She so awesome.
This is off topic but I really admire your speech skills, I've never tried speaking so many words at consistent speed and volume while not losing track of my thought, I guess it just takes practice and a little bit confidence in the information you're presenting. You see I already know the solution to most of my problems but sometimes I wish I didn't so I don't feel guilty about how lazy and unproductive I am
I get that this is suppose to be quick information. The information is so good in these videos I just wish you’d slow down!! I get lost with all the speedy speaking and have to rewind so much
There’s a setting if you click the 3 dots on the video, for “playback speed” and you can speed up/down the video :)
You’re a greater speaker/presenter! teach me your ways pls
This reminds me of the podcast sawbones! Love both
So.. is there a way y’all could do something about PCOS or infertility?

I would like to learn more about the testing of The Pill and La Operacion.
I want a pill that doesn't give me crazy mood swings
See your doctor about taking the pill with no pause. That pause is what causes the terrible mood swings and my terrible migraines but it's not really necessary. The pause was developed to give women a sense of normalcy, probably by men who don't get how bad a period can make you feel. The problem is the drop in hormones on those 7 days messes you up. I haven't had a period in 11 years! I am healthy, take regular checkups and have no more week long debilitating vicious migraines, no more yeast infections and no more cramps or mess. And the money i save on feminine higiene products is absurd! Win + win! Girls, do your research and stop suffering for no reason.
Keep trying.
Im the oppositebif minkoff my pill I feel crazy get mood swings/ heat flashes anxiety etc.
Makes me so proud to be a nurse, proper health information for all!
Learning about this kinda stuff plus some dark history tickles my brain.
completely off topic, but i love that shirt!
Wow I had no idea that birth control and DST avoiding measures dated so far back.
Let me give you a topic suggestion that (I think) people will like to know about: The history of minimum wage, and it's insane racist origin.
That propaganda from wwi was crazy ... also ily! You are so articulate and pleasant to listen to ☺️
Interesting video. I'd love to see follow up touching on the modern fertility awareness methods. Its an interesting topic in that it is mainly suported by three wildly diffrent groups. First you have those who decline the more standard methods because of religous objections. Second you have people who wish to minimize the ecological impact of their birth controal. Third it is suported by woman who believe breaking the taboo on speaking about the female cycle and teaching girls and women how to read their reproductive cycle is an important way to empower them regarding their health.
And the lady that founded Planned Parenthood in the '50s tested the pills in Puerto Rican women without their consent, leaving many sterile
Praise the pill because now I only have 4 periods a year
Sydney Tonkin I don’t think that good......
that's not healthy...
Thestarskynight, she takes a type of BC pill that controls the amount of periods one has a year. Thus the reason for only 4 a year.
With mine I have None and could not be more thrilled.
As before it my obesity had my ovolution stop But I still got a flow, a heavy flow that lasted for weeks.
Appearently the lining builds up and up then just drops. Disgusting and I really wouldn’t know When it would come.
Plus I had lots of mood-swings.
Now I have no period, woopwoop, my mood is balanced and as a bonus, I’ll never have a pregnancy scare if the rubber fails:p
Plus, now that I feel better I have more energy to actually loose weight again and get back to healthier weight I had before when I was on combined pills which I couldnt used when I started gaining weight.
I know there are women out there who never find hormonal protection that doesn’t have negative effects. But for me, I have always felt more myself On the pill than off.
To the people saying that 'it's not healthy' - I'm not a medical professional so you can take my words with a pinch of salt, but as far as I've read there are no real risks in not having your period (or having less per year) due to taking pills continuously. The period we have while on the pill is not exactly a real period anyway. The 'sugar pills' or the week where you don't take the pills was designed so that women would be more at ease to take them as their periods wouldn't disappear and also that it would be better accepted by religious standards.
Comstock act is still in effect, Texas just took a company to court because they mailed morning after pills to women in Texas. A red federal judge sided with Texas, overriding FDA authorization of the drug. The ruling was put on hold while it weasels its ways through the court of appeals. The court of appeals ruled that the FDA had authority and knowledge that the lower court lacked and repealed the ruling.
How about a history of the opposition to birth control?
Coitus interuptus sounds like a harry potter spell
Very impressive video
i like the little circular box the pills came inside in the video, mine are a rectangular pack.
emperor-chipotle I imagine they did it that way because it resembles a compact.
Ouch !!!! wth were people thinking
I love your shirt!!!!
Hey Danielle, I know it's an old vid, but can you maybe include the harsh history of (if I remember right - black) woman dying in the process of the pill?
I really hope for a better Birth Control for women that has no side effects, we have enough mood swings as it is.
You would be a great professor
It’s nice to see you with your natural hair!
I take birth control because my hormones are messed up and I feel like I'm going insane/ dying.
Not having unwanted kids is great too.
There is a village/town in France called Condom. I wonder if there is a connection....?
I had two kids by 1982, I wanted to have my girl tubes tied, a tubal ligation . So before I could have that surgical procedure done. I had to be certified as MENTALLY UNABLE TO CARE FOR MORE CHILDREN. So basically, I had to be diagnosed as CRAZY TO GET MY TUBES TIED.
Despite how people think Massachusetts is left wing liberal! This is what I was forced to do in Massachusetts before the best doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital were allowed to do the surgery on me.
The various religions prohibitions on birth control are also important factors.
females at a Nebisco job had to painfully wait in a long line for the one bathroom which isn't good at all.
a few of them would sneak into the mens bathroom to relive themselves of the discomfort of waiting a long time.
I believe in fairness. speaking out against hate groups and street crimes going on that effect peoples lives.
the best way to heal this world of hate pain and suffering is if everyone works together to make this happen.
@7:16 fact #7 the latex (thin but strong) condom was invented in 1920.
IUDs and implants should be included in the video. also, there are many types of contraceptive pills.
Dr. Condom is my going to be my new nickname now
Coca Cola isn't birth control?
UH-OH ...
You are very eloquent.
Lysol? Ouch!
So, I'm going to think of Mr. Goodyear as The Rubber Man from now on.
an issue (so to speak) of _National Lampoon_ showed a condom with an image of a Goodyear blimp on it.
That's why people had so many kids back then. It was unavailable because it was illegal. Wow...
many people would actually choose to have many children, in the past many worked on farms and needed the labour. Also Religion could be a big part too as in the Abrahamic faiths; islam, christianity, and judaism it is said to be fruitful and multiply and to have many kids. The catholic church actually prohibits the use of any birth control.
@@HotManJonah 11 is a little too much
The beach post card sold out so fast I missed out😔
Girl i dont know your name but you GOT IT GOT IT
Wonder how much 10 cents in 1916 would be now?
Girl love your hair! 😘
Your job is to research interesting topics and then teach them. How cool is that?!
Sorry, I promise I'm paying attention, but... That is a great shirt.
What about the oldest form of birth control, the pull-out method?? When did humans start doing that?
I know the posters were informative but birth control BUT man were they even more informative on the treatment of women at the time and where the need for the feminist movement came from
Lysol 👀👀 omg
I watched this in CINCO innernet.
Does The post card fit a phone?
Why do IUDS cause so much acne...can I take a low dose birth control....
What can I do...
The pill in my experience is way worse then the iud! have mine for a year now and am very happy with it!
It sounds like you wouldn't have any kids after using the lysol up there.
Personally, love my diaphragm because I'm a breastfeeding mom. Although this is a type of birth control someone would want to complain with something else so maybe spermicide, pull out method, condoms, and/or keeping track of a womans cycle.
Never tried that method. My mother told me she got pregnant nine times with diaphragms. Also, most of the women I've known who relied on diaphragms as their primary method grew to feel like sex was a chore.
Forgot all about Dr. Percy Julian
Ok ok soooooooooo
My last name is *very* similar to the word condom. Yes, i *do* get made fun of for it. I wanna know what came first, my name or condoms.
(It's from Irish and German descent)
Didn't the utilitarian and libertarian philosopher (and member of U.K. parliament) John Stuart Mill advocate for contraception before it was legal in the UK?
The host or commentator of this genre of you tubes has been gifted with a very nice voice and can articulate what appears to be a large script with eloquence. She she give this up and concentrate on television. Television is in need of women who can be present themselves in a professional manner such as she can. She has potential and from my untrained eye talent!
Go for it and go far!
I think it’s funny.. “I cant be bothered to put a rubber thing on, so you pump chemicals in your body to screw with you hormones.. also if you miss or take antibiotics your screwed.. or you could get medical implants that can screw up your body and require surgery. Oh or you can get shots that can destroy your fertility in the future.. or pump poison up your V which is notorious for its absorbing qualities. Which os why scented tampons are a bad idea.”
Aka it’s one of lest invasive an body changing option, but I cant be bothered. I don’t have to be effected by all that shit anyways.
Also the other options are not as widely known and from what I’ve seen less available, and less recommended by people telling you what to do with your body.

If you're dead there are no babies soo..... I guess it works???🤔
They never give proper credit and acknowledge to the real inventors when they are from another country, the true scientists inventor of the pill was Luis Miramontes a Mexican scientist:
"Among his multiple contributions to world science is the synthesis on October 15, 1951, when Miramontes was only 26 years old, of norethisterone (norethindrone), that was to become the progestin used in one of the first three oral contraceptives (combined oral contraceptive pills). For this reason, Luis Miramontes is considered by Lilia Miramontes to be its inventor.[1] Carl Djerassi, Luis Miramontes and George Rosenkranz of the Mexican chemical company Syntex are listed on the patent for norethisterone as its co-inventors. Djerassi "is now known sometimes as the 'Father of the Pill'".[2] The historians, nevertheless, agree that the invention, or the first synthesis, is the work of Miramontes.[3][4] For example, the Nobel laureate Max Perutz[5] states that "On October 15th, 1951, the chemistry student Luis Miramontes, working under the direction of Djerassi and the director of the laboratory Jorge Rosenkranz synthesized the compound". Djerassi himself affirms that it was, in fact, Miramontes who conducted the last step of the first synthesis of the compound: "On 15 October 1951, Luis Miramontes, a young Mexican chemist doing his undergraduate bachelor's thesis work at Syntex completed the synthesis of the 19-nor-17α-ethynyltestosterone or, for short 'norethisterone'-which turned out to be the first oral contraceptive to be synthesized."
