My 04 f150 saved my life in a rollover crash (rolled 4 times) from 70 mph , I am incredibly thankful to Ford for making such a great truck

Same thing happened with my 2004 Ford F-150. I had 2 of them in fact, my first one was totaled in a tbone collision on January 31, 2022, but it’s what happened to my 2nd one which I got on February 18, 2022 that I wanted to tell you about. I remember how poor the 2001 Ford F-150 did in the offset test, and then how good the 2004 Ford F-150 did in the offset test.
On February 6, 2023 around 10:15pm I was driving on a (straight) road when I slid on a patch of black ice. The back end of my 2004 Ford F-150 started to fishtail to the right and I tried to counter steer but over corrected and the back end then swung to the left and turned more the 90° to the ditch. Once the back drivers side wheel went off the road it clipped the snow and the truck started to roll about 3 or 4 times down the ditch before it struck a tree and came to a rest on its wheels.
It knocked the wind out of me and I couldn’t breathe for about a minute. The passenger window shattered out and at some point my phone flew out of the truck. Because I couldn’t find my phone all I could do was keep the horn honking. I was also out in the middle of nowhere even though I was just 2 miles away from my house. The drivers side door was smashed in and jammed shut so once I was able to regain my strength to move I then had to crawl to the passenger side to get out. I eventually found my phone about 6 feet away in the snow. My glasses also flew off as soon as the truck started rolling and I still haven’t found them.
Originally I thought I just went straight down the hill. I then realized how aggressive the truck was being jolted when I was trying to find my phone and saw everything put away under the seats were laying everywhere in the back seat. It wasn’t until I looked around and saw everything that was in the pick up bed scattered everywhere in the snow as well as the officers who responded pointed out that the roof of the cab was dented in (but didn’t actually collapse totally in, just dented inwards about 2 inches because of a giant rock) when I realized I actually rolled several times. You also can’t see yourself rolling. Basically all I could see through my windshield even with my glasses off was the whiteness of snow and a bunch of snow flying around as if you’re in a snow storm with no visibility. The only thing you can feel is yourself being jolted around and being pulled from your seat every time it rolled on the roof.
I was going about 50 to 55 mph but the there was no snow at all on the road. The only snow visible was on the grass and on the trees. It was even 35°F outside which is a heatwave for Minnesota especially for February. What I eventually learned was that it was raining all day while I was asleep. So the road was originally wet but as soon as the sun went down certain spots iced up. I obviously learned this the hard way, also the entire road in the 2 miles I drove were dry, however where I slid is a spot that’s shaded with a bunch of trees.
The truck was totaled unfortunately. I dealt with rib pain and chest pain as well as right wrist pain. I also experienced whiplash in my neck. A few days later I started to have pain on my head which probably was my water bottle hitting my head as that also flew out of the truck. Thankfully I was able to walk away from the wreck though. I didn’t even get any major cuts. The only part of my body that was bleeding was my finger because I broke my fingernail. None of my airbags deployed either since nothing hit the front end directly as well as the 2004 Ford F-150 didn’t come with side airbags yet.

Thanks for posting! I picked up (no pun intended) my Screaming Yellow (same as stepside in the video) 2004 FX4, supercab, stepside 5.4L about 8 years ago down in Alabama (no rust) with 100K miles. Today I have 150K miles. No major repairs besides wear parts.

I always laugh when someone says the 04 f150 is the worst f150 built, still have 2 above 160k ones 163,(04) and the other is 190k(06) the trick is rumning anything above 5w-20, the 04 is considered the worst f150 built because of the 3v 5 4, i still drive mine daily and the biggest issue is the unlock button doesnt work😅

These were a total downgrade from the previous generation, they were easily the weakest F-150’s by far too. I wasn’t really too big on the looks of them either.

What planet are you from? The sales went through the roof on this model. It was the safest in wrecks until the competition caught up. In 2006, 700k sold in the US and 900k on the planet. It drives better. The steering gear was upgraded to rack and pinion. The previous model was a death trap in head collisions.

Sad because the engine in it should've bankrupted Ford Motor Company. 4.6, 5.4 24 Valve engines where all total garbage. They're just like the 6.4 Diesel Gas hogs for little power output and the worst factory tune EVER on a ford truck. Phaser lockouts, HVOP and Aftermartket timing equipment won't help much at all. Hence why ford stuck the 2 Valve variants in almost all the econoline vans. Like the new uhaul Econolines use the 6.8 V10 2V not the 3 valve. Plus a generator that had some of the worst transmission gearing possible I get it was meant to be mostly a work truck but all in all unless you get a 4.6 16 valve model from the earlier revistions it's gonna be a rough ride. Though not all experience the issues, I feel it's mostly certain trucks from certain build dates and plants that was more less the issue. Plus Poor designs that was rushed to stay ahead of Dodge and Chevrolet.

    • @nathanmcdonald610

This generation (2004 - 2008) models only had the 4.6L 16v which while underpowered in anything heavier than a Crown Vic was one of the single most reliable V8's produced by ANYONE in modern times, it is not uncommon to see 16v 4.6L's with 500K or more on them and still going strong. The 5.4L 24v was problematic in these trucks yes, but a big part of their problems we're negligent owners that skimped on oil changes, some engines you can get away with doing that with, the 5.4L 3v is not one of those engines. To say that this design was "rushed" to compete with GM and Dodge at the time though is complete fabrication.
This generation F-150 excelled in a lot of areas that GM and Dodge eventually had to follow suit in, namely interior and build quality. 5.4L issues aside these trucks we're put together (particularly the interiors) a lot better than any GM or Dodge trucks in 2004. If a bad engine should bankrupt an entire auto company than both GM and Dodge should have gone down the shitter decades ago, in fact they both did and had to be bailed out by the government, Ford did not. The truth is they've all had their fair share of hits and misses with engines. Ford's killing it now with power and efficiency. The Ford 5.0L Coyote of today which is the natural evolution of the 5.4L / 4.6L engines is every bit the powerhouse GM's latest 6.2L LT V8 is.
The 6.4L PowerStroke was a piece of shit yes, but it also was a Navistar engine that wasn't compatible with Ford's software. The Ford built 6.7L PowerStroke they use today is currently the best diesel engine on the market in my opinion.
