my list of top 20 clean vocals in blackmetal: - top 10 are all borknagar and dimmu tracks that had ICS Vortex in them. - middle 10 are all borknagar with the new vocalist (vintersorg, right?) - the "bottom" 10 are emperor.
Around '93 or '95 I was listening to this local metal show on a non-profit radio station. They played a song so intense, yet focused like power metal. I'm not sure of the theme, but it akin to a heavenly battle. The vocals were nothing like I had ever heard. (Rob Halford, the guy from Crimson Glory, Ralf Scheepers, the guy from Satan,Angel Dust,King Diamond)
"Foreverdark Woods" is GREAT and BEAUTIFUL track but it's NOT black metal! After "Blood Fire Death" Quorthon played viking metal (and thrash). Nordland (I and II) is just great example of viking/epic metal.
I might just start a bm solo project whose main distinction is that is has clean vocals, the existance of this list proves i could pull it off and make it sound good.
Xasthur...Scott Connor....if a vocal tone possesses the ability to cleanly conceptualize the deepest, darkest, despair from someone who is slowly dying by a thousand dull, jagged cuts as opposed to one fatal slash, well, the, this choice makes sense.
Schammasch really has to be on this list. C.R.S clean vocals create such a unique, haunting, yet beautiful, "ritual"-like atmosphere. Just listen to "Metanoia", the choral parts in "The World Destroyed by Water" and "In Dialogue with Death" or the whole Hermaphrodite Chants: EP...gives me goosebumps every time. PS: Although it's not really Black Metal, I really like that you included Gallows Hymn..the song is fucking amazing, and Alans melancholic voice adds so much to it

I don't think Burzum's post-prison albums can be considered 'black metal', but if you're using something from the Umskiptar album it obviously should be Gullaldr!!
I'm pretty new to Borknagar, but I specifically looked up a list like this to see if anyone even came close... NOPE. I get lists are totally subjective, and to each their own, and all these vocalists are great. But ICS Vortex is on another level. I've never heard pipes like that in black metal.
Check out Nagelfar - Flug des Raben and Aaskereia - Aaskereia .. It's a matter of taste but I really love their clean vocals.. and I also like the clean vocals of Ash from Nargaroth
I love Grutles voice. Harsh and clean. Fuck yea. And I love Aldrahns vocals on the Dimmu track. Leave no Cross unturned is a burner,one of the best modern Darkthrone songs for sure. And Carl Michael has good vox too
