what you could do in these videos is have a sidekick who also fishes. You could share childish witless banter, become deliriously happy when you catch and both pretend that each other are hilarious. Then have a section where you delve through the contents of each others packed lunch and the hilarity reaches a crescendo. Then you could... on second thoughts, you best leave it as you do it now jon. Best angler on youtube. top marks
What a great river session jon using a pencil float your the best angler by far and all the work you put in to fetching us your videos from the time you spend on the bank to all the editing involved is well appreciated and makes the membership you charge worth while 👍
Really very impressed on how you manage to get so many vital viewing angles to make a brilliant viewing experience.. that and awesome angling and commentary.. 💚
Thanks for the reminder of the tipe of float I used to use when I was a lad, always used them on small rivers for roach, just went and bought some on ebay lol
I was taught to tap the hook right into the caster with my thumb nail which could be a bit time consuming but watching you hook them like a maggot I'm gonna start hooking mine that way. Another brilliant video Jon. Going to have to have a good rummage through the tackle drawers in the garage as new Pencil Floats are £2.55 each !!
Yeah, bury it inside the caster, and if hook and caster right size, you could get the hook tip to just peek out. With a spade hook it was easier to bury, and a little tug on the line made sure the spade was wedged inside.
I have always traditionally buried a caster when canal fishing or if it's hard, but on prolific venues, commercials and catching well it is better to leave some hook showing. I hook them a bit deeper than a maggot and they stay on well then and retain maximum hooking potential.
Hi John you have given me an idea 💡 I fish a res and the tow can be quite hard mabe a pencil with bulk down will help, the roach and skimmers are there but control is difficult 👍
Pencils are ideal if you want a lot of weight down as there is less resistance on the bite and strike. Only time I wouldn't use them is if its towing hard or very choppy. Then Id switch to a rounder bodied float with a wire stem. If you're only waiting a few seconds for a bite with no holding back required they are hard to beat for speed and efficiency.
Another great video Jon. 👍💯 Just a quick question. ...where did you get the pencil pole float body from. I make floats but I cannot get that design. Hope you can help.
Lovely filming Jon, a huge thanks for taking the time to set up the cameras so well, and a cracking bag of silvers on a short session. Any reason why you used your Pole rather than opting for a Whip-to-hand method?
Thanks DP, glad you appreciate the effort of that float cam!! Like a lot of the Thames at the mo it was weedy out to 10m so a whip would be no good. I think the roach are in the main flow too, so the further the better. Plus a pole is much more precise and I would have had to throw my gb if whip fishing which would've brought even more bleak... and pike!
I definitely could have, but I generally seem to catch better on casters on the Thames with this style of approach. Hemp fishing lends itself to a lot more little and often catapulting. I would have a separate lighter rig for the hemp too, so it was a nice simple session and approach.
Yes, I use rubber beads and a speci carp angler's tip: dont use the hole, pierce a new hole through the rubber bead, pull it through this with a diamond eye threader and it will grip much better. I then have a hard plastic bead the other side which is just the right diameter for the knot to never pull through.
Simply because it was one of my light 'commando missions' taking minimal tackle, so I usually just take my MTX2 pole and whack a few kits etc in a bag all loose together.
Id probably use a 2.5g olivette and six No8s, but it depends what your float actually takes. Might be better with a 2g olivette if it's a bit 'light' like a lot are. I ideally want 6 to 8 extra shot, one above the Olivette, directly 2-4 below and two droppers below that.
Yes I actually had to on my next match with them as it was quite blustery, but generally don't unless its breezy or a downstreamer, as its one more thing to tangle.
just watched you latest matrix match so i didn't ask you on there, i'm having trouble with the pre tide MXC-3 hooks size 12's 4-6 inch they keep snapping on me, they are the 6" 6,4lb and the 4" 7.9lb ??? what do I do, is thi a problem or is it me ?????
Hmm not sure why they are snapping or where on the rig, loop, midway or at the hook? But are you using balanced tackle and not foul hooking the fish as well, as you will always lose a few hooklengths whatever you do. If they are consistently snapping like cotton in the same place you're best getting tackle shop to look at them. Also think about where they are stored as some people leave the card flapping around out of the protective cellophane and then wonder why they're damaged. Hope that helps
@@JonArthur Thank you Jon they are snapping midway, they will not snap again coz i re tide the whole lot with my favourite hook length line, and in my new video i had a PB of 20lb 8oz common, Thank you getting back to me 👍👍

Thanks TT... although snacks are a nice part of my vids too... but I get your drift!
Watching this makes a lovely change from watching someone catching down the edge on dead maggots on a carp lake .. Nice one Jon 👍🎣
Glad you enjoyed it. Nice to mix things up!

Thanks Chris, believe me its not easy to zoom in on a float on your own with 13m of pole in one hand, so it's nice to get the acknowledgement! :-)

Nice one!
Proper fishing don’t get me wrong I like a bit of carp bashing but the relaxing chill out day on the river a few roach etc lovely
Glad you enjoyed it Phil
Great video Jon as ever, like fishing the pencil on the canal too.
Glad you enjoyed it

Great content once again, I manage a carp fishery and this makes a welcome change .
Glad you enjoyed it John!

Try Bob at Pablo RWC floats for any shape you want
Brilliant vid again Jon, next time try some sweetcorn !! Worked really well for me at medley last summer. Tight lines mate.
Yes Ive had some success on corn at Culham actually, both feeder and float. I had some in the bag! I think wheat would work too...

Get on there!
Good footage m8 nice to see the float bury
Cheers! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Anther class video pal....👊😉
Thanks John!
By far the best guy doing videos, just keeping things simple, why didn’t you give hemp a go

Nice to see you’ve still got some lead in a ya pencil
🍌🍺🤩
You're running out of comment ideas ha ha
@@JonArthur wanna bet? I’m a bottomless well of wit and repartee
With braid being such a fine diameter, how do you attach the puller bead to it? Home-made one?

Hi Jon. Why were you using the MTX2 instead of the MTX4, which theoretically would be better for this size of fish? Thanks.
Simply because it was one of my light 'commando missions' taking minimal tackle, so I usually just take my MTX2 pole and whack a few kits etc in a bag all loose together.
Hey up mate what's shotting for a 3g pencil float please

Do you ever back shot those pencil floats rigs Jon?
Yes I actually had to on my next match with them as it was quite blustery, but generally don't unless its breezy or a downstreamer, as its one more thing to tangle.
