Dragonite has always been a statement to me. It doesnt get most of what the other psuedo legend dragon mons get, but that has never stopped it from competing.
I hadn't noticed how hard Gen 6 dogpiled on Dragonite. Pretty much every pseudolegendary bar Hydreigon (who hardly needed one) got a Mega. *Audino* Got a mega. And then they added a type totally immune to him to top it off
5:55 hiii thats me! Ironically i used Dragonite on the special side with Hurricane, Draco Meteor and Flamethrower @Habanberry as a somewhat reliable Anti-weather mon. At this timeframe, many rain dance teams where roaming around with Ludicolo (and Kingdra) as its main Attackers and i needed something which can One- shot Ludicolo/Kingdra. Flamethrower also helped against the rare Abomasnow and did nice damage against Metagross and Scizor. Lets just say it worked quite nice atleast for that time.
Woah, that’s so cool! Those moves were definitely better STAB moves than the Physical ones it got at the time, so that was a good call! Glad you found the video!
Everyone knows this but I will bring it up again the only reason dragonite didn’t get a mega was because the Pokémon company was not going tot add a “Dragoniteite” to the game
Dragonite has been my favorite Pokémon since I first beat red version back in 2000 and seeing it in the first movie. I’m glad to see it getting some love.
Pokemon team making HGSS: What if the Dragon's Den gave the player a Dratini with Extreme Speed? That would be a fun reward for the quiz! Dragonite in SV: "I AM THE FASTEST! ME! ME!"
Another great video, I feel like this format should become a regular thing. On the topic of Dragonite, it was my favorite Pokemon as a kid, that sort of changed after I got back into Pokemon and discovered VGC, but now I am just glad that I can use it in a productive way. I remember when the first D-Nite Extreme Speed stuff came up and some people were not convinced at first, but it truely did stick around.
Overtime ive started to love dragonite alot Great movepool, great abilities for both smogon and vgc, looks cool as hell, weirdly balanced defensive type
A key thing not mentioned is that Multiscale and Extreme Speed were illegal together in generation 5 and 6, with it becoming possible in generation 7 due to becoming an egg move.
Dragonite is my favorite pokemon! I've always loved his niches in every metagame, singles included. But normal has always been my favorite type though, so I was so happy when Normal Type Dragonite was very powerful and pretty fun to use, especially in formats as fun as the early gen 9 regs.
I used dragonite during reg b and had a lot of success. The newly found inspiration has led to building 4-5 different build dragonites and having a lot of fun with them.
Glad to hear and see that the 1st ever pseudo legendary finally gets the treatment it deserves. Loved it ever since the Orange Islands finale when it swept through Ash's team. I'll never forget the moment when it launched at ultra high speed after Charizard; you knew that it was an absolute unit
In the battle stadium 3v3 singles format, Dragonite is a centralizing force in the meta. It’s on everyone’s team, and you don’t know whether it’ll be Extreme killer or a bulky support mon.
I love Dragonite, his design is amazing and simple. What bothers me the most is that in every interpretation of Dragonite by lore and media exposure - he is super fast. So why TF is his base speed so slow for such a speedy dragon?! His base speed is tied with Venusaur
You should cover the Gen 4 starters next. Empoleon and Infernape were the first ever starters to succeed in doubles, and at the time, this was extremely rare due to a lack of hidden abilities.
Despite being the first Pokemon to have it, Dragonite has been somewhat held back by its dragon type. It probably would have had more success as a Normal/Flying so it could get that juicy STAB on Extremespeed (or Hyper Beam in gen 1).
Dragonite is a really decent mon and i think Gamefreak is waiting on the right time to give Dragonite AND Flygon some real love, I wish we'd get two forms for Dragonite, Physical and Special just like Basculegion and have them be dubbed as " Mystic Forms".
if tera types are gonna leave next gen (which they probally will), i hope that they mayve give dragonite some regional form that is maybe normal dragon so it can atleast still use stab extreme speed
A fair buff for outrage (and similar moves) would be for it to automatically target the opponent with higher hp . Still wouldn't be able to pick, but at least you'd have an idea of what would happen to plan ahead
That’s an interesting idea for sure… though this might make it even weaker in competitions because your opponent would always know which of their Pokémon it would target and could easily play around it
In gen 5 OU I had a rain team with a special attacking choice scarfed Dragonite with Thunder, Hurricane, and Draco Meteor. That thing was a monster I miss it so much.
Shows how GameFreak just don’t care about some Pokémon. But Dragonite has still thrived in Singles for nearly 30 years. Tera and Gen 9 has helped Dragonite
I don't get why special attack Dragonite was never used in rain comps. He gets thunder, he gets hurricane, (both get 100% accuracy in the rain and have gigantic damage numbers at 110 which are usually off-set by their low accuracy that is normally 70) he's also resistant to the typical counters that destroy flying types due to being a dragon. He might have a better attack stat than a special attack stat, but his special attack stat is better than most if not all flying pokemon, notably Zapdos who would be the typical thunder/hurricane user in a rain comp. Am I missing something here?
Dragonite only has base 100 SpA, and doesnt even get stab on those moves. Zapdos has dishcharge, and 125 special attack and gets stab on both thunder and hurricane
@@basicallynothing9021 Ah I see I had scrolled down to the stats of Galerian Zapdos! I thought Zapdos only had 85 SpAtt. STAB is also important, you're right. However, from playing about with a special attack Dragonite prior to the Indigo Disk (where I had no Zapdos), I did find that it could 1 hit kill a LOT of stuff with super effective hits and it has a lot of coverage with potential for: hurricane, thunder, draco meteor, flamethrower, surf or tera-blast, and this was without me using tera for STAB boosts. Thanks for your clarification though, you're right that regular Zapdos is definitely better for the hurricane/thunder and I was mistaken! SpAtt Dragonite is still good though and is good for catching people off when they think you are going to tera normal and extreme speed.
why don't people use sitrus berry + acrobatics? ( so that it doubles power + stab). This way, it's priority, strong as hell, and you can setup dragon dance with multiscale, maybe even having roost under your belt (to reset multiscale). And maybe Flying Tera...?
Mainly because there’s no easy way to guarantee the Sitrus Berry going off. You’d want a high-powered Acrobatics right out the gate, and not have it be something you have to set up, especially considering it’d be for just that move only (as opposed to something with Acrobatics+Unburden, for example)
I got a soft spot for dragonite since he was on the first team I ever built (which was not that long ago, I started this gen). I actually remember looking at it seriously because I played emerald rogue and my strategy to beat the hardest challenge at the time was locking it to gen 1 and starting with dragonite and an ability capsule. I at least felt like I was one of the first to see how good it was in gen 9 with tera normal extreme speed although realistically I'm sure tons of people noticed it. Worked out much better than my other gimmick of ice tera baxcalibur with weakness policy next to ember talonflame. I feel silly now since virtually everyone seems to want to start with a side target weakness policy strat but oh well, at least I came up with it on my own. Climbed decently high up the ladder with it too (top like 180 in masterball tier). Good times. Now it's way too much of a pain to make another team with all the legendaries I'd have to get and train and change tera type of and ugh, I hope they make this shit way faster in gen 10.
You had me at Dragonite.
Bro, congrats on the SA regional win! It was awesome to see it in person!
Me too😊
He had me at Dragon- because I am dragon my balls across your forehead 😊.
No Special Z Move, No Mega, No Dynamax Form, yet Dragonite is out here thriving.
No good stab options for 30 years but it’s still good.
@@TheUnique69able Almost 28 years, but I'll let it slide.
@@enoyna1001he rounded up…it’s been about 30 years 😂
All of those got removed, but Dragonite gets to keep multiscale and extremespeed ☺
Lance dragonite literally has a dynamax form
Dragonite has always been a statement to me. It doesnt get most of what the other psuedo legend dragon mons get, but that has never stopped it from competing.

He's my favorite Pseudo bc of his duality: adorable and always powerful at least for a time in any generation
He's gonna sweep your whole team without breaking a sweat or showing mercy, then be like "=D Yay we did it!"
I know the editing doesn't affect the quality of the ideas shared, but they make it very enjoyable to watch as a background to the video essay.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I had a lot of fun with this one 🙃
@pokezach494_ it was damn good!
Everyone knows this but I will bring it up again the only reason dragonite didn’t get a mega was because the Pokémon company was not going tot add a “Dragoniteite” to the game
It would have been way too silly of a name… 😆

My favorite Pokemon. I'm glad Extreme Speed gave D its flowers..I hadn't realized how fitting that was
