Chopsticks were my first whittling project! They came out so well, I gifted my best ones! I used pieces of firewood (pine I think) that was at the campsite in the deep woods! It was the most relaxing thing ever!! Whittling in the woods!! Best therapy ever!!
Relaxing video to watch. I recently found myself camping without any eating utensils. I live in central Texas, so all of our wood is hardwood. Making a spoon with the knotty mesquite available wasn't really a possibility. I was able to make some chopsticks, they worked out pretty well. Thanks for the idea!
Since a stroke took out my right side, I can't use chopsticks so I made up a few sets of hillbilly chopsticks. I took a wooden clothespin and hot glued a set of bamboo chopsticks (free from Chinese carryout restaurants) to the top and the bottom. Now I can use them with my left hand....
Wild gummy bears - LOVE IT! Your bushcraft chopsticks are much fancier than my own. We were asked to make spoons in "survival" class and I grabbed two small fallen twigs, debarked them, then burnished them with the edge of a stump. Total time, 1 min. Told the trainer I'm too hungry to carve a spoon in 30 min. I'm ready to eat -- now. She agreed. So we set out to making a fire and cooked fish while the rest of the class kept carving. (yes - we did share afterwards as we all did a good job of catching fish that day)
C Veg I was noticing some of the vids coming out of Alaska and parts of Russia the leaves are almost all dropped and the people are wearing jackets. Hardly anything has started changing here in Oklahoma and the daytime temps are still hitting the mid 80s F but at least the nighttime temps are in the low 50s. Soon, very soon.
Just a quick tip as I've made several sets of chopsticks: Instead of using 2 quarter logs and whittling down each into separate chopsticks, just whittle 1 down to a little bigger than 2 chopsticks and just split it in half... saves a TON of effort plus you can get more chopsticks out of each piece. Alternatively, you can whittle down 1 really long one (tapered to both ends) and then just saw it in half (across) and bam, 2 chopsticks! Great vid either way!
Good question. With this type of wood, it doesn't split very well once you get down to smaller pieces. And I wanted to keep the chop sticks longer. So, that required me to start with thicker sections. But if I was using a different wood that split better, I definitely would have taken them thinner before I started the knife work.
You are awsome, watched some of your videos now and the way you talk and move within nature is very respectful and not at all what I am used to see from other "outdoorsy" channels. I love that. Apart from that your hands are freaking beautiful. :))
Looks like a fun little project for sitting around the campfire! Hardwood ones are definitely fun. I made a set of padauk chopsticks for a friend not too long ago, and was pretty pleased with how they turned out. They were a little warpy, and my living room ended up dusted a nice shade of Forest-Gummi-Red for a little while, but totally worth it! (Also, if you let red forest gummies cross-pollinate with orange, and let them ripen a little longer, I thiiink maybe that's how you get peach-rings...)
You guys always made high quality videos , but man this one was out of this world ! I thought I was watching some high end badass hollywood movie :) Thanks for sharing , take care. Nick
I especially like the long away shots where like it's some kind of forest creature who has stumbled upon your bushcraftery and isn't sure what to do so it bobs its head around in confusion. :D But no, seriously, I enjoyed this. :)
This was fun and artistic. As this is the first time watching you guys, having just found your channel, I find myself intrigued. Consider me a new subscriber.
Ha! Therapeutic. That's the perfect description. Slightly off subject; any suggestions for a good all-around hook knife to carry in my kit for spoons, bowls, etc.? Thanks!
Great video once again fellas :). Thought they were jelly babies at first hahaha. We had to do something many years ago. We just used sticks hehehe. Take care. Craig
The only problem I have is that there are no sugar free wild gummy bears in Canada; although the ones we have are high in fiber. Thanks for the relaxing fun video. Brian 76
Great video. Love me some vine-ripened gummy bears. (Have you seen the Amazon comments on the sugar-free Haribo gummy bears? Hilarious!) Also love me some Karate Kid. I spent hours trying to catch flies with chop sticks. Awesome time. Thanks for having us along.
hey please message me. i seen a other channel on youtube here that copied one of your videos and posted it to their channel. i cant figure out how to send you a message
Curious....could never understand why anyone would want to eat with those over a spoon or fork though. Hey Krik...I miss yer "Outlaw Josey Wales" beard. Nice music...what's with the cinema-wide format?
Nice chopsticks, however according to the Chinese leaving your sticks upright is similar to funeral incense burning, which is a sign for death. Bad omen.
I hate to say it, but that was a waste of a resource . He could've made a full set of chopsticks from each of those chunks of wood. Better yet, he could have located a straight green branch, cut two lengths from it, debark them and taper the ends with minimal carving or material waste. I'm not knocking his bushcrafting, just saying he could've done better.

I can really appreciate the choice of music for the peaceful and rhythmic working of the wood. Well done!
Ha! posted before the end....yea for forest gummi!
Piper Vucelick it is so relaxing!

Skills like that are so attractive!! Way too uncommon today! Great job 😊
It's funny how seasons differ in different countries, our gummy bears are still green in the UK. Great video as usual. Steve.
Seasons yes...chopsticks...no

Zen and the art of working up an appetite...
Well done. Enjoyed the video and musical accompaniment.
ahahah the red forest gummi topped the video off xD keep it up. Love these crafting projects.
why didn't you split the half branches down more, to quarter or eighths so you wouldn't have to shave as much off? or is this a silly question
I second this
Here here. Nice video but could've made more bro
Wondered that myself.

Black Owl Outdoors thanks for the reply. I'm ditching the utensil set and making some of these next time I'm out for sure
Very peaceful and relaxing vid... all you need now is the noodle bowl
DAMN, funniest outdoors video I've ever watched!
Oh man, this is your best video!
Soothing episode for sure. Thank you.

Nice work dude, you've probably seen them already but Jarrod Stone Dahl carves some stunning chopsticks, not as easy as it looks ~Peace~

where did u go
Definitely switched to the knife too soon there. You could have saved yourself lots of time by getting them nearer to the finished size with the axe.
For sure. Wasn’t too concerned as I wanted to use my knife more that day.
I noticed all the Forest Gummies were red...does this mean the other colors are not ripe yet? Great video.
Thats a really nice video! Nice carving and the bears look delicious :)
Thanks for sharing - Martin

Vine ripened gummy bears. 😂😂
Good work by the videographer! Good footages and editing! What camera is your lucky choice? (Not that it mattets) love the macro shots too.

Dude had enough wood to make 6 different pairs of chop-sticks 🤣
What is the mat he sat on?
I make them and sell them in my store - owlcreekhandmade.com
Looks like a saddle mat

Black Owl Outdoors i sent a picture of the channel to your facebook page. someone there was speaking with me
You could’ve split it two more times and saved yourself a whole lot of carving.
so how exactly are we turtles again? just curious cuase last time I checked I was human.
all that hard work to just leave them in the woods?!
Ur so blandin in the forest bro

Perhaps it was inspired by the impending winter. Thanks for dropping some knowledge though! :)
😂😂😂
i personally prefer not consuming
my mouth with splinters
I feel like this belongs on Portlandia...Not trying to be rude. I can appreciate this kind of stuff, but it seems tailor made for goofing on.
Damn...they goofed on themselves...I should have kept watching.
Sticks ? Ready made less energy spent or is this just to entertain ? Looks like a stick
For all that work I think I'd rather use two twigs
meh

I like most of your videos but I really don't get this one. Do more gear reviews. Chop Sticks really ? Ninja Turtle Chop sticks ?
