I can easily picture seeing this band in a smoke filled room of some road house in the 1930's. The sound is so authentic. Perennial Favorites unquestionably captures the spirit of a 1930's jazz orchestra.
In Denver (where I saw them also) they played both tracks between Hot and this release. The audience who were tuned to the swing jazz phenom - instead - showed up in period 20s early 30s costumes by more 40 percent (The rest made sure to wear suits/ties and dresses of any kind - me included - I found some antique accents but couldn't manage more than that past suits) and ran every jazz dance in the playbooks. It was quite the nite. Very high energy. It was also in a 20s/30s theater so it had the period vibe all-round. (the energy was so hot all the feathers from the boas in the crowd went into the air like chickens exploding - quite the sight)
i love squirrel nut zippers. i saw them in concert yesterday. it was and music festival and after they were done with there set they walked around the field with just a trombone cornet tuba and some percusion. it was awsome.
This group is,and was, incredible. I miss them very much and wish they had continued on. A friend and I had the great chance to see them live once and it was a show un-like any other. What talented and dedicated musicians they were- taking up a mixture of music not seen in pop music- ever! Brilliant group well-deserving of all of their fine accolades!!
I am 33 my grandparents grew up in the 30-40s my grandfather was in ww2. They listen to music like this in their day. In the 90s this came popular with swing dancing:)
heard hot in 97 have not heard this band in ages..a swing show is on the 15th in san diego and i instantly thought of the zippers. one of my all time fave bands. love these guys. super happy music
Heute höre ich zum ersten Mal einige Songs dieser tollen Band und bin restlos begeistert!!! Davon bekomme ich so schnell nicht genug! Himmlischer Sound!
My buddy and I went through a high school phase where if we were at a party. and dance music was playing. and everyone was having a great time. we'd put this on, dance horrifically, and become physically aggressive with anyone who tried to change it. can't believe i just stumbled upon this gem. Thank you squirrel nut zippers.
Watched an episode of My Crazy Obsession the other day. They profiled a 23 year-old woman who lived as if it was the 1950's. Her clothing, car and even the music she listened to was no later than the 50's. She was well-adjusted and looked very stylish. Her boyfriend was into it too!
Jmac when you lived in whislter, and we all came up there and partied at buffalo bills I gave the dj this Cd and it got the party started, such fun, the rollin' 90's
My 3 year loves SNZ. She tells me through out the day. Mommy play squirrel zippers! she can't quit say it yet. so cute. Se doesn't like Heavy Metal but loves swing.
For my bari saxes out there, the intro is low c, g, d, a a. And repeat. That's all I know, i just improv off of ear for the rest when I play along. Sadly I do not know that hot bari part at 0:28. I've been experimenting but it just doesn't sound right whenever I play
The band here seems to channel Jelly-Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers or the best of his era pretty well in a couple of places. Pretty terrific. How did they get Jelly-Roll on one side and 50's bebop on another (Memphis Exorcism)? Great!
@loqutor I adore ska, but I love other types of music too. Whoever those people are are dumb. Don't let them ruin your taste in music, or the genre they supposedly stand for. That said, these guys are swing. :) Swing revival, to be exact. I love them! They actually inspired the lead singer/writer of Streetlight Manifesto, a ska band.
The bit starting at 1:01 sounds a heck of a lot like something Bix Beiderbecke might have done. One reason I enjoy SNZ is their use of so many styles, swing, jazz, rock, even klezmer. No matter what the style, they're fun. Describing them as a novelty group might be more accurate than swing.
Lugh314 It was a fad, at least the initial swell of it in the mid-90s was. I think the swing revival caused a widespread acknowledgement of swing music, a lot of people know about it, but unfortunately it still isn't that popular today. I've heard through the grapevine that the Rockabilly movement is becoming a big thing.
+Atom- O -Tronic While neo-HOT has kind of died down, there still seems to be some residual interest in early jazz. SNZ could have done for hot jazz what the Blues Brothers did for classic R&B, in fact the Blues Brothers influence continues to this day. SNZ didn't have any big name stars, and it was never their intention to start a movement. It just happened. I'm glad it happened, but all good things must end. I am a musician today (not professionally) because of these guys. I came across SNZ the year I turned 40, and reviving my desire to play music was my mid-life crisis that turned into a second life. I'm now in a band and we just recorded our 19th song earlier today.
@Jaiexx Weird thing is, Tomas classifies Streetlight as "Hardcore Jazz" and doesn't see his work as Ska. It's weird to think that they arn't ska, but at the same time his discription makes sense.

HOW HAVE I ONLY JUST HEARD IF THIS BAND? I'm in love!
I first heard them when the movie Mask came out. Great, ain’t they!?
Until today, I'd never heard of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. They're great! I've always LOVED this type of music.
The more I listen to these cats the sweeter the tunes get
i love squirrel nut zippers. i saw them in concert yesterday. it was and music festival and after they were done with there set they walked around the field with just a trombone cornet tuba and some percusion. it was awsome.
This sounds like the soundtrack to an old cartoon from the 30s or 40s. The music has always been my favorite part of those old toons.
Kick ass has no expiration date & this kicks ass!

Heute höre ich zum ersten Mal einige Songs dieser tollen Band und bin restlos begeistert!!! Davon bekomme ich so schnell nicht genug! Himmlischer Sound!
This song always puts me in a good mood. If I knew how to tap dance, I would totally dance to this song.
I saw 'em at music midtown '97 in Atlanta,GA. Good times;)
this is some of my favorite big band music

I gotta learn how to dance to this before the new revival concert comes in my area. Swing Time, Baby!
Gotta love these guys.
I'm back from the past. Nostalgia is a friend of mine.
I saw them at the MN Zoo in 2007. Jimbo was the coolest guy I've ever met.
Awesome song!

Just saw these guys at higher ground in Burlington VT. Definitely one of the best shows I've seen. Thanks Squirrel Nut Zippers!!!
I'm SO glad they're cleaning up on royalties. Great band. They deserve it.
First song i ever downloaded from the internet on liquidaudio, before napster, then connected the CPU to my boombox and copied on a cassette tape
My 3 year loves SNZ. She tells me through out the day. Mommy play squirrel zippers! she can't quit say it yet. so cute. Se doesn't like Heavy Metal but loves swing.
Amazing! I love it so much! This song is really a good mood Pill !
...how have I never heard of this band before?!
omg i love this song!
this band is my love
This makes me so happy. It makes me want to dance myself off a table. Or something.
This is probably my new favourite song. Swing song that is. Classical is different... Well, it's actually tied with Gene Krupa's "Sing, Sing Sing"...
That's why I love it!
最高にいい曲ですね

Wish I was in New Orleans sitting on a candy stand.
I'd forgotten about this song until it was in that ketchup commercial from a few months ago.

Sjajno!!!!

This song was on the Heinz Ketchup Commercial! It is AWESOME!! XD
I like it!
@MovingTarget85 That is the same thing I was thinking about a month ago. I'm happy you've finally found it!
the grass is always greener on the nostalgia side

Matt Fowler brought me here. BOOM the big corporate machine!
Same here, this would be hilarious if Kane came out to this.

The first song I heard of them lol
Leon Redbone on a long slow cool drink of absinthe!!! Ya baby
This song was featured on 91.3 KXCI in Tucson
is awesome
I play this song every time I go and eat somewhere on a per diem.
@JennelleBelle The times are what YOU make of them. You would never have gotten to hear this great band, had that been the case.
i wish i was alive during the 'zoot suit' and flapper days. i really hate the times we live in today.
oh those guys, i've heard about them hell i didnt know michigan had a ska scene, indy rude boys were always nice
I can only tell you that in 50 years people will be whining about not living in times we currently live :) So enjoy the present times :)
classic hal roach style movie time skit music ...
i love it ... ; )
love the intro. 1:10 is cool.
Unique band
This should be the new national anthem
:- D Good stuff!
never heard of these guys before but i love em and i used to hate this kind of music too
They had better music in the past than they do today. Too bad this band isn't as popular as it was in 1997-8 during the Swing renaissance.
The swing revival was a fade, like Tai-bo or Pogs.
Lugh314 Actually, swing has a decent underground following.

they can play their instruments well
Man, they just don't make music like this anymo. . . 2008? Umm. . . Kay, never mind. ^^;
This song reminds of the muppets for some reason.
Beedy eyes, big blue head!
It's all the trumpets.
Or that banjo...
@JennelleBelle I don't think you would have liked the zoot suit riots much.
shame on you all who forgot about SNZ. Just saw them last month =]
