How to change an alternator pulley

  • Over the years I have seen people struggle for hours, even days to remove an alternator pulley. There are a couple of ways to do it without damaging any parts or yourself. However, the one that I find the easiest is to use an impact wrench. As with any power tool There is some DANGER involved with doing it this way since your hands are very involved, you must be very careful! This will also give you an excuse to go buy yourself an impact wrench, electric or otherwise. As always learn a new skill or practice the ones you already have, either way turn them into craftsmanship. You never know how far they will take you.

Impact, socket, good to go except I had to jam a screw driver in it because the nut was not breaking. Thanks. Good stuff 👍

So you’re trying to open the alternator completely up?
Make sure you have all the screws out.
Block the front part of the case up on some wood or other soft material. Put a bit of WD-40 or other penetrant around the bearing race. Let it soak for an awhile. Next take a block of wood (to protect the shaft threads) and your dead blow and tap litely on the end of the shaft. It should come loose. Apply more hammer force as needed HOWEVER, be sure not to damage the case mounting ears or the shaft threads.
      Good luck!!!

So I jus replaced my stock alternator (130 amp) with an upgraded 250 amp alternator. The voltage on the stock alt was 13.5... And with the upgraded alt the voltage reads at only 13.0... The pulley on the upgraded alt is a bit smaller than the pulley on the stock alt... could that be a reason why I'm experiencing lesser voltage on the upgraded alt? I mean do u think it will make a difference if I swapped the pulley, thus tightening the belt a lil more? Will that give me more voltage gains?

      Good morning
I like to see alternator output in the 13.8V - 14.2V range. The smaller pulley will actually spin the alternator faster. It should charge better at the same engine rpm. Does the voltage go up as engine speed increases?
