    Hey John!!! Thank You! This has been a dream build of mine since I first saw the small ads in M.A.N. in the early eighties and NOW I finally get to see one and in flight. At the time I was SLOWLY building my "trainer" and first plane, a Bridi Trainer .40 (AKA the high winged Ugly Stik...😂). Contemplating a Hawk purchase one day I realized that the high price for the "kit" was THE PRICE FOR THE PLANS ONLY!! 😂 Nuh Uh! Not cutiing my own ribs and formers, much less warping LE and TE tri-stock for that "eliptohedral" profile. It was and still is waaay beyond my modeling pay grade. What a stunning glider she is...flies and looks INCREDIBLE. Great job on the masterful restore!!!! Give that dog a pat for me and enjoy the rare piece of RC aviation history.

    Wonderful video! Im 95% finished with a Carl Goldberg Sophisticated Lady. I only need to cover the fuselage and final assembly. I will use a cox .049 and SIG power pod until I can find a Goldberg power pod, but I really want a Hobie Hawk. ❤

    I have an original Hobie in the basement in near mint condition. It tended to land fast as it tended to bounce and stall due to the wing incidence. It a fast flier, great thermals, I only flew mine off a high start, very beautiful wing symmetry. Fuse was nearly indestructible ABS back in the day, heavy but very sturdy and stiff. She would fly well in windy conditions, and you have to fly her kind of fast, as she only liked to fly in nose down tail up position. Thanks for the last from the past. The Hobie was my first RC experience, kind of a trial by fire kind of thing!!!

    Wow! Thank you, sir!! Other people like horses, or cars, or quilts, or coins, or stamps. I happened to be bitten by the airplane bug. Hard-bit, in fact. Thank you, this was absolutely lovely. I "grew up" (a horrible overstatement) with Olympic IIs, Super Questors, and Windfrees. You've made my evening! Best regards from Colorado, USA!

    They flew great with 100" wings, especially with a dorsal fin added, like your one. The 10 footers however had dutch roll problems, so most preferred the small one in spite of the lower performance.

    I love the look of the curved up wings. There‘s a new version of the Hobbie Hawk called Superhawk made by Tony Johnson, Synergy Composites. It has a little more wing spawn, what makes it look even more impressive.

    My family knew about the HobieCat sail boats since we were avid small boat sailors. I was watching a news program about these new radical sailboats, then, oh by the way, he also designed an RC sailplane! I was more excited about the airplane model. 🛩😀👍

    Those were the days flying down at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point, CA. I ran into Hobie Alter a couple of times flying down there, his surf shop was just down PCH. I always wanted a Hobie Hawk, now the price for an unused (if you can find one) is through the roof. Every once in a while one will pop up on Ebay, needing some TLC but the prices are still pretty high.

    Hi John,
    I owned a 98" one in the early 80's. Had transparent red wings and stab with a white fuselage and vertical tail. Was great thermal soarer, but took much effort when using a high start. Wish I had a slope soaring site back then. I donated it our club for an auction for field improvements. As usual, Katherine was great with the camera. You both stay safe.

    • @SlopeRCGliders
      @SlopeRCGliders  2 года назад +1

      Thank you. This one had transparent red covering when I got it. But the wing had some damage to the trailing edge so I had to take the old covering off.

    I taught myself with a Hobie Hawk. About 7/8 miles inland in southern California. Crashed first flight. I didn't realize that the CG info was based on the tail being about nine inches high. I assumed the CG was arrived at with the fuselage level. So I had a very tail heavy airplane that was uncontrollable. Repaired it, re read the directions, and had many wonderful afternoons.

      Yes, it’s a very unusual way of finding the balance point. I did it as per the instructions but think mine is maybe a bit nose heavy.

    Beautiful glider and great piloting as always. Do you ever get to thermal soar or just ridge soar? Would be great to see some thermal flying from you, I know it’s hard to get good video as the gliders are usually much higher when thermalling.

    Great video of the Hobie Hawk !! I have an old Hobie Hawk, which need repair, which I flew as a kid back in the 70's. The only part that I no longer have is the plastic tail cone assembly. Any idea where I can locate that part OR is there any chance you could provide the specs for the plastic tail cone? Thanks in advance and keep going with the GREAT videos !!

    What is that song? It's driving me mad trying to remember. The reference in the heading just points to a Russian YT channel with the same track and nothing in English. I know it's a classic from some time around 1965-1985, but I just can't remember. Nice video, BTW, as ever - lovely shot of the low sweep over the dunes behind.

    Very graceful. Do you prefer 3 channel models over aileron control?

    • @SlopeRCGliders
      @SlopeRCGliders  2 года назад +2

      It all depends on the conditions. In light winds I really enjoy the simplicity and lightweight of just two channels. But when the wind picks up I always fly something with ailerons because you need the extra control.

  • @harryspeakup8452
    @harryspeakup8452 2 года назад +1

    These being long out of production, and not really DIY recreatable off a plan due to the foam wing, are very sought after in the US now, and tend to fetch a lot of money

      I recently designed a progressive dihedral glider, the Samurai, which was mounted and flown spectacularly by John. Very cool to see that so many years ago they already worked on an idea like this. My model is in balsa wood and retractable film and with shorter wings.

  • @josephinebennington7247
    @josephinebennington7247 2 года назад

    As I’m learning to fly a Solius…are you controlling this, and many of your gliders, without aileron? I can’t see any. Can you say more, please?

    • @SlopeRCGliders
      @SlopeRCGliders  2 года назад

      This one is just rudder and elevator. I do enjoy flying without ailerons when the wind is light, as it keeps things simple. But when the wind picks up I will always fly something with ailerons as you need the extra control over the glider.
