Squeeze Play!!! Dangerous Heavy Tow From a Bad Location!!!

  • This was one tense situation. Driver broke down in the middle of road construction where traffic merges onto the interstate which has been funneled down to one lane. It was a semi truck pulling a loaded refrigerated trailer and the rear drive axle gears broken on him. What could have been a simple tow, turned into a mess. Our trusty Peterbilt 389X with Miller Industries Century 1150R towing & recovery unit #11 battle the traffic and the task of safely clearing this 80,000 pound monster before someone smashes into it or us. Hope you enjoy this different, tense, yet satisfying job. As always, thanks for watching and God bless!!!

I was flying when I was bodyguard one time- had to fly regularly-- and two ladies sat next to me all nervous and wanted to know what I thought of flying.. One says " aren't you afraid to fly so much?" I said-"not at all afraid of flying-- but that crashing scares the poo out of me!"... we were flying along outside LA on the way in and hit some turbulence-- the plane bounced a bit and they screamed and asked me what that was--- I told them " it's a speed bump- keeps the pilots from flying too fast".. they said " oh-- and calmed down- for about 5 seconds til they realized what I'd said.. ha.... But tell those folks that's a SPARE axle just in case!! ha.

Very good recovery in one of the most dangerous locations. Here in the U.K. we just lost a young recovery driver out on a similar job but with a car, he was hit by a truck not paying attention that took out him and the two ladies from the car. Many lives lost or ruined for lack of attention, working in live lanes tremendously dangers people just need to slow down and move over. Stay safe Ron and team!

"Squirrel!" I needed that laugh, thank you.
Guess the driver feels proprietary about his rig, or the mess made by his rig, or maybe he is just trying to learn. He could learn on the passenger side more safely, though. I have problems standing and watching people work, so I might be as bad at "hovering around" as this guy is.

I have a suggestion for you Ron. When you drop semi trailers, especially loaded ones, leave the landing gear pads, or feet, up about 2 inches off of the ground. There's two reasons for this. The first one is to help the truck that's picking up the trailer ftom over pinning, having the fifth wheel pin sliding over the fifth wheel plate on the truck and dropoing off infront of the plate. This can happen due to the many different ride hights of the trucks today. The second reason is so that the truck thats picking uo the trailer will lift the landing gear off of the ground making it easier for the driver to wind it up. This is especially true in the winter months when the landing gear can freeze to the ground under the wieght of a loaded trailer making it very difficult for the driver to break it free and wind it up. Remember this is only a suggestion.
