I agree, HOWEVER there are two sides to this coin. Stockton Rush was indeed a maverick, a risk-taker, an innovator, an inventor, even. BUT, if he was 100% sure of his creation, ('Titan') why didn't he submit it to the tests and examinations of the Regulatory Board that approves such designs? (It was because he knew the design hadn't been fully tested and would not have been passed... Though he believed in it absolutely.) That blind self-belief cost him his life. And the lives of four other men. There emerges evidence that OceansGate as a viable concern desperately needed paying tourist passengers, (oddly called 'Mission Specialists') and Stockton Rush was in full 'salesman' mode to make that happen. (Whatever might be said about the arrogance of the man, he fully believed in his product. He bet his life on it, indeed. Unfortunately, perhaps influenced by his exhuberant over-confidence, so did four others...) xx SF
Going miles down to the ocean floor is not quite the same as anything on the list you gave. As a matter of fact it is far from it, no pun intended.
Exactly! Responsibility is his for the deaths of 3 adults & one sub adult who will never get to be an adult. Now his wife has to face the accusations & guilt of his irresponsible attitude & behaviour.
This is an immature & irresponsible attitude. People who do some of the most dangerous activities, occupations & adventures typically spend a great deal of time insuring they take every precaution to provide the safest equipment & environment possible, as we want to return from the outrageously dangerous jobs & endeavors we pursue & come back in one piece without permanent, painful injuries. Making sure all aspects of safety are addressed is just the responsible & sensible thing to do, unless, of course, you don't care whether you live or die.

I hope every young partying OceanGate employee on TikTok, gets to watch every detail of the debris on the bottom of the ocean floor - and watch in agony, as every piece is brought up to the surface for investigation. That arrogant CEO bragging on his young hires has really given them a legacy to forever remember. 💥
I say jail time would be good for them! He fired a guy for telling him it was not safe, but didn’t want to hear that so his puffed ego just told him he had 10 minutes to get his things and get out! How sad he knew that it wasn’t safe
My heart goes out to that teenager that died before his life really started and all because he felt the need to not disappoint his father.He really didn't want to go and was uneasy about this exploration. Geezus this is so heartbreaking and horrific! 😔

How come it took so many days for Coast guard and Navy to find titan??? how come no one searched the last location where titan was last known to be heading down to the titanic 😔 why was the 5 lives lost if Navy heard the implosion of titan on sonar or whatever sound device they have in the ocean...?? I recommend watching a video by DALLYMYD. He has 13.4 million subscribers. He was a passenger on the Titan Mission 3 only 3 weeks prior to this implosion. Fascinating footage considering the circumstances.
My grandson told me of a small Sub lost under the sea. Before I heard the Titanic Sub news, I told him that it must have imploded because that's too deep for that vessel. I was in the United States Navy on a sub tender named the USS Frank Cable AS40. Those people should have done their homework before they risked their lives. To see something they could have seen in the actual footage of The Titanic. The view even inside the submarine would've been the same view they would've had on the television they couldn't touch it, so why go down there that is the biggest question of all why?????????

why is because they knew the risk and wanted to take it anyway. That's it! These men were explorers (except the child), many who have went numerous times on this same sub! They were prepped for this and they signed death waivers in the event of any catastrophic event, also that materials may be under standard and all occupants understand that and the risks involved. They signed away rights to sue and signed a waiver to waive the company of all liability.
Stockton seemed so arrogant about any criticism of the sub☹️ he was just focused on 1 thing, getting to the titanic. He seemed to be playing with fate! It just should never ever have been allowed to attempt that without all the correct safety checks done! My heart breaks for the 19yr old more than any of them because he didn’t even want to do it but he did JUST to please his father 😞💔 the others were at an age that they had all enjoyed a lot of years, especially PH being 77yrs old! Why he wanted to see the titanic 38 times is beyond me!! He was definitely playing russian roulette! ☹️ they were all quite old, but it’s heartbreaking for that young boy, so tragic!💔💔

@@whodatn4l948 That's what James Cameron said about the crew of the Titanic. Basically he said the Irony wasn't lost on him that both these vessels are on the bottom of the ocean because of bad management.
@@whodatn4l948 The titanic itself was actually well designed for its time it wasn't a cheap roll of the dice like that sub was. No architect or engineers said it was unsinkable that was the media sensationalism just like today.
What I don't understand is that PH was an experienced sub pilot and veteran of many dives in proper subs. How did no realise oceangate was such a Mickey mouse operation
People take note !! - Having seen how the Carbon Fiber was wound around the bobbin in straight lines, I find it hard to believe that nobody knew that this is NOT a construction that takes advantage of the properties of this material. If the fibers are wound in straight lines the pressure vessel is ONLY strong in one direction, it will withstand pressure around the circumference of the vessel BUT IT HAS ALMOST ZERO strength from side to side, it has ABSOLUTELY NO SHEAR STRENGTH as in the other direction it is merely relying on the strength of the resin to stop the fibers separating and shearing. What happened is that because the vessel is a cylinder the deflection in the center of the cylinder that is higher than the deflection at the ends caused a shearing force that split the cylinder along the axis in the direction of the fibers. If you imagine opening the cylinder out flat and loading the center of the sheet it will crack in one direction very easily. The bobbin should have been wound in a diagonal fashion where every layer is at right angles to the previous one, then the resulting material would have been able to withstand the pressure as it would have been strong in all directions. I cannot believe that no person at the engineering companies that produced this or NASA that he said worked with him etc. did not realise this. It is such a rudamentary mistake it is almost criminal in the neglect of design consideration.
Carbonfiber is not suitable material for submarines, it's very poor material for this kind of use no matter how it was wound because it still is held together by resin. They should've gone with steel instead, or even aluminium or titanium.
This was tragedy could have been avoided if only Stockton Rush and OceanGate would have listened to experts ...

Great show JB. From a former Navy Corpsman, Thank you for your service Mark Martin. Very informative. Having had a couple of Chief Master divers and many dolphin wearing friends, I really appreciate Mark's explaining how we us humor to compartmen talize and relieve the stress of the job, while never losing sight of the importance and serious nature of the job. Mark's sense of professional humility is truly humbling. "Fair Winds and following Sea".
A lot of people were extremely worried and all we got was false hope with banging and nonexistent SOS signals. I was relieved they didn't suffer. I felt their families pain all those days 💔 😢

Human arrogance at its finest. If you want to experiment with your own life that’s one thing, but to be allowed to experiment with the lives of other’s is morally unconscionable. This submersible was a death trap waiting to happen. Even if the other passengers signed a waiver to acknowledge the risks, none of them fully understood just how poorly designed the submersible was. After listening to the experts in the field and gathering more information about the history of deep submersible diving, this situation was 100% avoidable. Stockton Rushes legacy will forever be tainted by his deliberate carelessness and refusal to do things the right way. There was a clear standard set in place for safety that had been tested and proven. The fact that Stockton knowingly went against that system by cutting corners at every opportunity he had to do the right thing is criminal. No one had to die and that is what makes this situation so tragic.

In fact, they interviewed a passenger who went down in a 2021 visit, in this submersible……at the end of the interview they asked him if he would go back and he stated “no, not because of what happened, but rather having found out all of the build issues, lack of testing, certifications and sound science behind the design and build….no way he would have ever gone. Thats what this CEO did to these people. He hid the truth under the guise of “experimental”…….thats a crime.

a Nuclear Submarine for YEARS…. He seriously BARELY talked about it. He passed away 3 years ago, but I’d imagine he would have PLENTY to say about this happening & I would have loved to hear it… I am very infatuated with this story, & even more so because of the narcissism that lead to such a NEEDLESS loss of life. Hi JB, I thought you might be interested in the following. I just watched a video posted on RUclips 4 hours ago by a man named Jake. The name of his channel is “DALLMYD”, an adventurer, he has 13.4M followers. He and his girlfriend were supposed to be on the Titanic expedition several weeks ago, but it had to be cancelled. He documented their time on the mother vessel taking them to the wreckage site. He has actual footage of Stockton Rush telling them why their trip down to the wreckage had to be cancelled. It’s very chilling. He also possibly has the last autograph of Paul-Henri. He was in the room directly across from them on the vessel. This is all so very sad. Thank you for everything you do. God bless and protect the grieving families of the five who so tragically lost their lives 🙏💔😔

Oh my goodness, I just watched that same video that sunnudays is talking about!!! I have also seen the interviews that James Cameron gave and I have even more respect for all that James has done. He and a friend took 7yrs to build his own sub. The vast knowledge and maticulus work they put into it AND he got his sub certified!... Sadly, the Titan was NOT certified!!! My prayers go to allthe families affected.
James Cameron's sub was NOT certified, but it is single passenger and only himself and the engineer were operating his sub, he does not charge people to ride in his.
As the 5 on board are greeted by the souls lost on the Titanic, may they welcome them and show them the ship in it's full glory as they remember it so their journey can be complete my thoughts and prayers go out to those left behind to grieve I am so sorry for your loss

Yes, impending failure of the vessel itself. It was bad, poor, inferior technology -- predictable, WASTEFUL deathtrap.
James Cameron said that he was informed of it and that the Titan crew may have noticed their vessel was too compromised to continue so they dropped the weights some time before it imploded. They may have panicked in those final moments. They might have also lost power before the implosion for an indeterminate amount of time. The implosion itself was, whenever it took place, naturally instantaneous. The timings, location, and cause are still being investigated so there are no official conclusions yet. Some details the world may never know.

The Titan was built with sensors inside the walls of the tube / hull ..Which James Cameron said if you're doing that as a safety feature , Rush shouldn't have even put that sub in the water ..theory is before the power loss alarms went off , Rush dropped ballasts to try and return the sub..but once the hull is breached it's too late ... implosion is imminent

I hope they had no idea. I feel bad for all of them but especially the teenager. He really didn’t want to go. He was scared but did it for his Dad. Such a shame. Life had barely started for him.

I know a quite a bit about building and the way carbon fiber lays down My question is and something like this after every run you think they would come up with a device that would in some way magniflex the entire shell or x-ray of some sort to make sure there are no overstressed areas where they know stress can come besides the entire vehicle? Just a thought .

I just still can’t get my head around how unprofessional this whole thing was, I’ve watched lots of interview footage with James Cameron who even stated himself the material the hull was made with is no good for that type of vessel , every dive it was weakening . So many flaws . Hopefully this will completely stop any companies in the future being able to just charge members of the public to take them down to such dangerous depths I think it should be left to the professionals it shouldn’t be a tourist attraction. I also find it terrifying that they had sensors in place to alert them if the hull was failing they could of heard that alarm in the moments leading up to implosion 😢

@@TammyMorris-te2oi It's not bad luck; many explorations have been down there. It IS incredibly dangerous going that deep regardless of whether the Titanic is involved. The difference is that previous exploration vehicles were certified for that depth, and insured.
Mark Martin moaned about armchair experts on this video claiming as a mariner he'd never expound on aviation, but that's EXACTLY what Stockton Rush did!! He was a plane pilot who decided he knew enough about subs to design, operate and sell tickets to ride to kids barely out of grade school😡

That sound event WAS already known to me at the very beginning but they continued to search because of the banging in 30 minute intervals. Also, it was known to me since the beginning that the crew was attempting to drop weight because they were descending too fast. The horrible implosion happened around the same time. Too many coincidences to not know that saving the crew was not going to happen. It was the banging that kept their hope alive. It’s just so very sad.

Carbon fiber and titanium is such a weird thing to use for deep-sea diving. The problem with those two materials is they don't bend; once they reach their breaking point, they crack and shatter almost instantly. Steel is typically what I would suggest for deep-sea diving, since steel bends as it approaches its breaking point. Installing a pressure sensor, you can tell how much pressure the steel hull can take when diving (during testing), which lets you adjust how much stronger you need your hull to be for the mission or the goal's target depth. A pressure sensor would not work on carbon fiber or titanium. Steel is heavier than CF or titanium, but is the safer metal to use. I would use a titanium hull maybe on an unmanned craft, but not one with people on it.

I think ppl find it difficult to imagine how those ppl could've died without warning. It would seem they would've had to have had some kind of warning. Even if it was just seconds. The thought of those people dying in such a horrific manner is cringe worthy. It's so unimaginable. One feels so terrible for all of them but most especially for that poor teenager who had a foreboding in the first place. A teenager who will not experience his adult life thanks to the cavalier attitude of the owner/CEO of OceanGate that let his guests fool themselves into believing the submersible was a safe vehicle piloted by an expert.
They knew there was trouble. The sudden impact, though, would not have registered in their brsins.

They noticed water - even a couple drops, I think, would be a horrible sign
The notices a small crack in the window…..and again, even the smallest slightest crack would be awful
Or….they heard “something” just prior to implosion.

Mark Martin is the bomb! Personally and professionally. Without reservation, I have total respect for him and his hard won expertise and essential character. What he says is always dead on accurate and truthful.
This discussion reminds me of the loss of the US Submarine Thresher! My father was a former US Naval officer and scientist! Dad helped build the very first Atomic Reactors for Submarines Admiral Rickover's program! I still remember how very concerned my father was in April 1963 after the Thresher went missing! Everyone at the Laboratory was very concerned . Unfortunately, 129 sailors perished in that incident! The Thresher was on her Sea Trials . I was only nine years old but I knew something terrible haf happened! Dad had the TV on and the family kept vigil! That happened only about 6 months after the Cuban Missile Crisis! 🤔🤔🤯🤯🤯

ALSO A HUGE SPREAD IN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC AFTER THE TRAGEDY...
There are only three items that would have been subjected to the water pressure:
• Carbon fiber hull
• Plexiglass viewing port
• The seal between the carbon fiber hull and the titanium dome on either end of the sub

Not unlikely at this era of nations in war, other nations firing ballistic missiles, may be a possibility of human error????? Safety concerns!!!!! Super thankful for explorers, and I’m sure exploration comes with pushing some boundaries. But sounds like Stockton Rush received lots of feedback warning him of the possible dangers and just wanted it so badly that he didn’t heed the warnings. It’s sad that these men lost their lives, but I’m glad it happened so quickly rather than the alternative. Picturing them stuck in the dark, in the cold, running out of air was a horrifying prospect.

JB, I have not heard anyone discuss this. The USCG, USN, Canadian Navy, and many others burned fuel, incurred hours on aircraft that need maintenance, and other costs. Will the US and Canadian taxpayer foot the bill? Will any of this fall back on the company.

Very sad situation I would guess that the sub probably had issues with the carbon fiber flexing from the pressure too many times and just imploded on the way down they may have heard some noises that scared them some electrical issues so they tried to drop the ballasts and return to the surface and it happened so quick no time to worry sux this should have never happened people need to take this more serious going that deep you need the right equipment tested x1000 and certified praying for all the families involved thanks wfla😊

It blows my mind that in this day and age with governmental regulations slapped on every type of industry, that this company who built this type od submarine could offer and sell tickets for rides to the Titanic's final resting spot with so few safety features on the submarine. in today's world we have regulations on every type of mode of travel offered to the public. As a medium I keep hearing a scraping sound against the titan . Idk what that means. Something hit or scraped it on the way down . Maybe a shark or whale ? Hearing the word attack and a feeling of free falling
I believe if they find and retrieve the whole sub they will find unexplainable damage caused by a hit to the sub or it was bumped by something and it caused damage to the pressure
@@donnabradford9494 I don't think they will find the whole sub intact. It imploded. The hull shattered. I'm an empath and I can definitely say that they felt fear. They knew something was gonna go wrong but it was over in an instant. they didn't feel any pain.
Can you talk about the report from David Lockridge that the plexiglass port was only rated for 1400m, but they took it to 4000m!

I am not expert on diving but I do land SAR. Looking at the sound event that the Navy heard, I would have bet it was the implosion of the Titan BUT on like information in a land SAR event I would not wanted us to call off the search. Anything short of 100% knowing is a mistake. Our team has NEVER called off a search that later was found to have been called off while the person was alive, even if found dead later. We have paused searches for safety of searchers, i.e. in the case of severe thunder storms but it was a pause. I would never expected the USCG to call it off until all efforts were made. AN example, the 96 hours of life support, i would not have expected the search to be called off at 96 hours but maybe a 120.
Sadly, there will not be intact bodies-only pieces.

According to James Cameron the carbon fiber used in the design of the submersible was the weak point of the submersible. It was weakened after a certain number of dives. It had obviously exceeded the dives it could survive at the crush depth at which the submersible ultimately imploded.
yea he got lucky number 13 in and 14 was the end. The weight on that carbin fiber metal tube was like 650,000,000 pounds at depth, so it had to of been wearing out. If you told me lets get in that tube and then basicly set the empire state building on top of said tube, I would tell you HEEEEEELLLLLLLL NOOOOO.
There were multiple weak points. The acrylic port hole was only rated for 3-4k ft worth of depth pressure. They put it on anyways even though they were going 12.5k ft down. Also you can’t permanently attach titanium to carbon fiber. The glue interface was put on haphazardly and that is also a weak point that can crack after so many cycles of stress.
what failed?- The sub was made of 3 different types of materials. including plexiglass, yes, there was a window. As we know materials expand and contract at different pressures, time and stressors. The sub had been down at least 3 times.
Because of imploding they’ve said they will not be recovering bodies, so I don’t think they’ll be recovering much of the sub.
There were definitely cameras all over the outside of ocean gate, perhaps there were some facing inside too? Idk, but somewhere out there is a video of the implosion, btw, ocean gates mothership was watching the feed and they probably knew it imploded as soon as it happened. Yet they still kept it a secret for whatever reason. Maybe the vid cuts right before the implosion, idk, i wonder if we will ever see it.

There is an excellent New Yorker article about the people and events leading up to the disaster, what was wrong with the submersible and why. The story is so well researched and written (by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Ben Taub), it could easily be made into a movie.
One in Vanity Fair as well. It's a tragedy on top of a tragedy that practically the ENTIRE submersible community knew that Rush had built a ticking time bomb, and that Rush was apparently able to convince everyone around him to ignore such irrefutable scientific proof.
My question: if communication was lost an hour and a half into the dive and then sometime an implosion was Heard by the Navy, why was it 5 days later that they found debris.
at the time the Navy heard the sound event they didn't know about the sub, and the rescue efforts had to continue in case they were alive

Rush ingloriously booted the QC guy out into the street in 10 minutes. Had Rush show some humility and listened, the disaster might have been avoided. Denis took 345 lifes, while Rush took 4 lifes in addition to himself. Pick your man to vilify.

I found it amazing, reporters actually asked if there was going to be any effort to recover bodies. What bodies? 2 1/2 miles down, the enormous pressure, would implode every cell instantly, in their bodies, I'm thinking. Every cell ripping apart, seems to reveal, there would be no bodies left.

They were essentially compressed / condensed from all angles & atomised at the same time - maybe a bit of bone fragment would withstand that pressure, but that's it. It's kind of unfathomable. It's not a tragedy when people put themselves in danger for fun. I live near Jackson Hole, WY and we see idiots having to be rescued many times a year because people ignore common sense and get into trouble. We had 2 women sit in their car for a week becasue they did not get out of their car and walk 50 yards to the highway. They had to be rescued.
But it's a tragedy for the family members and the friends who knew them though. What about their feelings? May not be a tragedy to you because of this whole idea that most of us, are never going to attempt this or have this risk take attitude and the curiosity that the 4 men did (as we have learned, the 19-year kid who barley started his adult years only went because for his father and how the day was getting close for Father's Day. This kid will never live his full life). It's in our gut instinct, most, to be like oh hell no. But for the risk takers, they thrive that rush and they find it fun. With yes the indication of heavy risks being involve. I think this whole event should be looked as reality lessons to be learn from. Think of every steps that were involve with commercial airlines in order for any travel use, before any people could really travel in air and the many many safeties put in place and regulations. At the end of the day though, the people who knew them, they're the ones who are suffering and I think it's rather disrespectful to say, "oh it's not a tragedy".

Who doesn’t want to do exploration?! It’s like space though deep under. I went 39 feet low free diving and caught a hard lesson in oxygen deprivation at age 27 in Cancun. I told the people on boat all spoke French and Spanish-mine is rudimentary that my first time primera Vera lolX had supreme confidence. Saw barracudas and turtles, it was sublime. Until I was gasping for air and choking on water near the surface. Humbling, yet informative. Would do it again!

I don’t know anything but I’ve been around and aware of Carbon Fiber as it has come into many different applications. I can tell you that it is a poor choice of materials for extreme pressure situations like the depth of the Titanic.

I am very sorry to hear about this tragedy. The sub looks flimsy on the videos but I am no engineer. I do think laws to protect children rights from experimental dangers like this should definitely be considered in the future.

The lights on and in that vessel were purchased from a camping shop. Controlled by a Playstation controller, and had only text for comms. That tells you about the integrity of the rest of the sub. Of course it buckled under pressure with such a cheap bastard.
Obviously there were issues but I saw on the news that those playstation controllers are pretty widely used on some ships these days

Hi from NZ. Why did Oceangate on the Polar Ice NOT REPORT THE IMPLOSION? They were closest to the exact spot and had to have heard it???
Hello from IRE. There is no way that a surface vessel (without hydrophone capability) could hear an implosion at 11,000 ft below the surface. (It would be the equivalent of a person on land hearing a balloon pop at over a mile away...) The USN operate long-range hydrophones in order to monitor incursions by enemy submarines. It seems that they (USN) picked up on a sound that was indeed probably the implosion of the 'Titan', but they may have not noted this at the time as unusual because they may have been unaware of an unregulated civilian submersible in the vicinity. (The ocean floor is actually quite a noisy place!!!) If you think about it, the gradual disintegration of the Titanic wreck probably regulary produces noise. So the USN 'listening stations' might not have remarked upon an unexplained or unexpected noise until they were made aware of the possible implosion of a civilian submersible in the area. (USN hydrophone technicians are trained to identify all sorts of noises accurately, (large submarine engine sounds, surface vessel sounds, etc.) but tiny electric submersibles make little or no sound. An implosion WOULD make a sound, but again, nothing like the huge sound that an implosion/explosion on a large military/naval submarine might make. (So, they would have noted and registerd an anomalous sound, but, unaware that a mini-submersible was operating in the area, they wouldn't have connected that to the implosion of a submersible. Far more likely that it was just the sound of the natural deterioration of the Titanic wreck.) I'm sure that when news of a lost submersible in the area was released, the Hyydrophonic Monitor Navy Guys said, " Oh... Remember that thing we heard yesterday???" xx SF

(I knew that USN had registered an 'anomalous sound' occourence but DID NOT KNOW that that information had been passed to USCG as early as Sunday, the day of the implosion of the 'Titan'.) It seems that even with this information, (though we don't know if USCG passed the info on to the mothership) OceanGate continued to believe that the submersible was merely 'out of contact'? (This is why the loss of contact with 'Titan' wasn't reported to USCG until the sub failed to return to surface after its allotted mission time... They failed to consider a catastrophic incident might have occured.) Perhaps they were hoping against hope that it was a mere COMMS loss? (There had been communications losses in the past due to minor errors/malfunctions...) In all those cases the 'Titan' eventually surfaced as normal. xx SF

Apparently the carbon fibre filament could not be assessed the same way steel or titanium could be with microscopic analysis. The only way to know of an impending breach of this material is effectively when it breaches.
This is the most informative channel and host ever!!!! Not in a million years would i let my 17 yo go down in that sub and i think it was very sad and reclusive of the Dad to pressure the Young man to go with him!!!
I would like to say hi to Mark, A fellow Navy vet. I was not a submarine vet, but I was a search & rescue diver. I did a few short dives on various subs during my ten years in the Navy. I also trained in sub rescue missions along with numerous other types of missions I was involved in.
As for my question, its why didn't the numerous safety agencies get involved into the operations and safety concerns after all the complaints and the whistleblower accusations of deliberate neglect of safety at the company?
Apparently it was descending to fast and they couldn't slow it down but they had computer problems in the previous missions and that's why mission 5 was the first dive down so the fast decent would of put to much pressure on the sub and caused it to implode

I agree they had some kind of warning sign obviously not quick enough of a warning once they dropped the weights that was a sign something was going wrong and they may have known something the 19 yr old and father may not have known all of what was going on but the expert explorers on and the OceanGate ceo def knew shit was going to be very bad
