Divers ROV & Sharks @ Brunei offshore (Saturation Diving 2018-19) Kreuz Challenger

  • Divers ROV & Sharks seen together at Brunei Offshore field. The scene depicted Saturation diving during the 2018 Inspection Repair Maintenance (IRM) period.
    We had Saturation Diving Campaign in 2018 and 2019. Saturation Divers breathe HELIOX (Helium & Oxygen mixture) while working and they will have to stay in the chambers for up to 28 days. Breathing this mixture distorts our voices. It is hard to communicate with our family as they always laugh hearing us. However Saturation Dive and Control Supervisors are all very experienced and accustomed to our voices. (Unlike shallow water jobs, where divers just breath compressed Air, -but still subjected to decompression tables and have to do their in water or surface decompression in the Air chamber. More on that in another video😁.)
    Before a Saturation dive can commence the Life Support Technicians (LST) have to man the Sat Chambers that house up to 9 Sat divers at one time. The LSTs also have to prepare the Saturation divers’ gear and equipment. In short they take care of our personal well being in the chamber habitat. While the Sat Dive supervisors take care or our diving aspect of the job. From the bell checks to the actual dive itself. They take care of our well being in the water.
    Dive Technicians play a pivoting role during all this. The system are always maintained by a specialised crew of Technicians. They also help launch the Bell,the ‘mode of transport’ to the depths. The diving Bell is like a travelling chamber.
    In the course of our subsea work we use Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) Quasar or Cougar to do various tasks. On top of their own job scope the ROV also have to survey the job area or spot the ship beacons and references. In the course of their ‘fly-by’ they would definitely encounter variety of marine life, like eels, snakes and fishes. The most bizarre fish that they encountered were the Angler Fish and ‘ghost shark’ or Chimaeras that were found in the deep Merbah field. Deepest recorded dive there was over 1000m in certain sections. (There’s a link to the Deep Sea ROV video below👇🏼)
    Sharks are also commonly found in other fields. We came across Bull sharks in Ampa field but unfortunately not able to capture subsea footage. Top-site crew always spot them around platforms, as seen online. The footage of Ray shark was from Champion 7 complex. This field was also a common sighting for sharks. Finally the last fish clip was that of the whale shark, in Fairley field. Even though whale shark are plankton eating, we are weary as they might snatch on our diving umbilicals and ship reference beacons and tout wires.
    Precautionary measures were taken by everybody and all were aware of the danger involved.
    We carried on working after all safety measures were in place. The Saturation Team that was in the water at that time of the whale shark swimming-by was actually team 5 , (William) Lim Poh Leng, Charles Skulmoski (Chuck) and John Henry Williams back in 2018.
    Thanks to my colleagues for providing video footages.
    Special mention to my wife and daughter who lend me their thoughts on editing outcome ❤️RY

    I took a GoPro 5 with underwater casing while welding and put a magnet under the camera’s mounting. It sticks on the subsea structure. Truly a good action camera very robust and sturdy.
    On surface I just had the camera on top of a magnet and it sticks well on our vessel surface.
    Thanks for watching.

    I used to live in Brunei from 1977 to 1981, later working there too. We used to go up to Seria to see the oil refinery and “nodding donkeys” as we called them, as it was only a short drive from Jerudong park where we were living. My dad used to know some of the rat hat divers that worked there. Such a great video in a wonderful country. 🙏🏻👍🏻

      Funny you should mention that. Just before the covid outbreak I was looking into taking a year or so out of work to do a full tour of the best places in Borneo, starting in Brunei and finishing in Kota Kinabalu. I only ever went across the border to get beer when I lived there then straight back again, such a waste of not seeing such a beautiful place. We did jungle trips as a kid with the British army, going in by helicopter and walking out. Fantastic memories, I’d love to come back!

    Back in 80s used to dive offshore West Africa - there Bull sharks were a REAL problem, bastard would try and come at you from below. The rest, just keep an eye on them. The other buggers were sea snakes, they're very curious, and when you shoo them away, can get frighten, and then they will bite - they are really very venomous, i.e. Beaked Sea Snake, for instance, has a venom so toxic that 3 drops of it can kill eight persons outright.

    Selam Aleykum.

    • @AbangShamvideos
      @AbangShamvideos  Год назад

      Salam .
      Nowadays with all the regulation and laws, the number of fatalities are low. As long as they follow the procedures the chances of things going wrong are minimise. Usually at the planning stage most of the problem would have been looked into.
      For me welding underwater is abit harder. Because of the elements like cold water, the tide, waves, electric shock, example if you do not have a good earth connection. All this can be obstacles to overcome. But once you get used to, it gets easy. I like it when I can see the molten metal forming at the tip of the welding rod, when the water visibility is good.
      Take care my German friend👋🏼👍🏼😁

    Does you voice change when you are in deep water?

    • @AbangShamvideos
      @AbangShamvideos  3 года назад

      Yes it does a little bit. Our lungs get smaller as we go deeper in the sea, due to pressure. When we dive on Heliox (Helium + Oxygen) in Saturation dives, that gas distorts our voice further.

  • @LordGingerBerry
    @LordGingerBerry 2 года назад +1

    Whale sharks are awesome, I would love to see one in the wild some day.
    I also have a question. Are there any voice correction devices that turn down the pitch of your voice when breathing HeliOx?

      @AbangShamvideos  2 года назад

      One day you will swim with those majestic fish…😁

    • @AbangShamvideos
      @AbangShamvideos  2 года назад +1

      For the communication ‘box’ in Dive control and Sat dive, some of them do have ‘voice scramblers’. It manipulates the pitch of the divers voice. However most of the Saturation Supervisors and Life Support Supervisors have been in the industry for sometime and they were once Saturation Divers too, they can understand our helium voice fine without using the ‘scramblers’ at all.👍🏼…

    What kind of salary a sat diver get per hour/ day ? Or is it fixed amount for the whole contract ?
    How many sat diving trips a person can do in an year ?

    • @AbangShamvideos
      @AbangShamvideos  Месяц назад +1

      Saturation divers get a day rate and if the go in the chamber will get hourly rate on top of that. It’s common to go on a Saturation job but not get selected to be in the Saturation team , hence do not get the hourly rate. When you get to a level of expertise and experience the company wants and the job requires for, you can fetch as high as $1000 a day, even more. Also the rates depend on which company you work for , the region you work at. I have heard of companies paying the Sat divers about $500 per day, all in.
      Sometimes it’s not about the money, there’s also safety factor. All diving job are tough. When you get into Saturation it becomes harder. You spend more than 5 hours in the water, and if the job requires, there are times when they will push you to do more. If you work in the places where they follow regulations and safety this will not happen. But then there are companies who do not follow such policies.
      Your next question, some Sat divers chase Sat jobs and they can get 3-4 Sats a year. Depends on location and job. Most are contented with 1-2 Sat jobs and Air diving job, rest of the time.
      Hope this answers your question. Stay strong and safe💪🏼😁👌🏼

    How do you negate/stop the effects of hydrogen embrittlement when you are welding under water?

    • @AbangShamvideos
      @AbangShamvideos  3 года назад +2

      Hello Scott, welding underwater is not as sturdy as topside welding. The surrounding water cools the material and weld’s molten pool very fast. The alternative way we can get good result is to undertake hyperbaric welding where the whole area to be welded is made dry by installing a hyperbaric structure and ‘pumping’ out the surrounding water.

      You for getting back to me. The hyperbaric chamber I guess has a good amount of inert gas to stop any fire risks? & does that mean the welder working within is still breathing surface supplied air or are they breathing the atmosphere in the hyperbaric chamber ?

      +scott c The Saturation chamber has low partial pressure of Oxygen anyways so risks of fire is low. Diver gets in the hyperbaric chamber undress to dry clothes and commence welding, breathing the atmosphere in the chamber. The scrubbers will absorb all the gases as it circulates, gasses including Carbon Dioxide. ...
      There are procedures when it comes to root welds .. and dealing with argon gas.

    I want do this but i have adhd and i need to take medication do they allow you to take that into the decompression chambers or am i gonna have to “smuggle it on board”

    • @AbangShamvideos
      @AbangShamvideos  2 года назад

      Before we go for our diving course we need to go for a thorough medical checkup. After that our diving medical have to be done annually. If I’m not mistaken as long as the diving Doctor deemed you to be fit to dive, you should be able to. The other question will be if the diving company. Criteria can sometimes be non transparent. They pick and chose who they want.And when you get on the job the Superintendant will also decide if you can get into the Saturation Team. Unless it’s an Air job that does not require you to stay in the chamber for days at a time, selection can be ‘harsh’. Anyways personally I have to declare whatever medication I take onboard the vessel, to the vessel’s Medic, and sign a declaration form for that. The Doc needs to be aware of what you take, so as to know how to treat you when/if emergency arises. Hope that answers your question

    How long do you guys typically stay under water working with welding and such?

    • @AbangShamvideos
      @AbangShamvideos  2 года назад

      It all depends on the diving tables, some company uses US Navy dive table , some uses DCIEM table and also Royal Navy ones. Usually when we dive on Air (using compressed Air) the deeper we go, the bottom time gets shorter. Example at depths shallower than 10feet we can spend about 2-3 hours. If we dive to 100 ft we could get only 20 mins of bottom time. That’s not an exact figure, We still refer to the table during each and every dive.
      If we dive in Saturation (Heliox Mix) our time in the water is about 5 hours. After that we already have to return to the Bell, as per the regulation.

    How much you earn sir annually

    • @AbangShamvideos
      @AbangShamvideos  2 года назад

      Hello there….that’s a hard question to answer. Since I’m a freelancer my earning varies every year. And since I don’t really go for Saturation job so annual earnings are not as much. All I can say is it’s enough to live an average life in Singapore (a touch abit extra for the finer things). It’s not about the money all the time. There’s many down side to what we do also, missing family time, missing birthdays festive holidays, sometimes weddings and funerals, health issues as we get older..etc..etc. Good and bad in everything 😊

      Hello there, everything is possible. If there ‘s a will, there’s a way. If you are physically fit and mentally tough why not. It’s going to be an uphill task that’s for sure, and it’s not going to be easy but if you are willing to go through… I see no reason. I have friends from the Armed Forces or Firefighters who entered the industry at that age. Costs of going through a commercial diving school for offshore is high no doubt and you will have to compete for jobs, those will be your obstacles…💪🏼

      Salam M.Harith. Salam Lebaran. Harith sekarang ni kerja welding ke? Terus kan kerjaya ini. Dalam bidang diving sekarang ada ramai yang berkelayakan, jadi saingan mencari kerja tu ada juga. Kalau sungguh2 mahu jadi diver kena ambil kursus di United Kingdom, New Zealand atau di South Africa. Saya tak pasti kursus di Australia masih ada lagi ke tidak. Kemudian kalau nak jadi underwater welder kena ambil kursus u/w welding pula. Jadi process nya lama. Dan menelan belanja yang tinggi.
