I found my wife in Zacatecas, who worked for Mexicana Airlines downtown office (now closed), when I was working in Zacatecas as a hotel systems instructor at one of their main hotels, then a Holiday Inn, not far from the Cathedral and Central Plaza.
I was there three weeks, and even arriving in the city in a taxi with my colleague and translator, Fernando, we were impressed with the way the buildings were lit at night, to show them off in all their glory and antiquity.
The people of Zacatecas were so kind to us 'Dos Gringos'--Fernando and I were both of Latin ancestry, me Italian/American, Fernando Mexican/American, and we agreed with each other that we would be laid back and abide by 'when in Rome' standards, which included accepting drinks if offered since our employer, IBM, normally forbid us to drink with clients.
But I was one of the team supervisors, so I told my employee "we're going to have fun'.
And we did. The hotel manager took us out every night, often to play pool, or their female employees would invite us to go dancing. Fernando even got close to one fine young lady, but I did not date clients, having know way of knowing I would stumble into my soulmate and now mother of our 23 yo daughter two days before flying to Hualtulco, our next Holiday Inn client, only because she spoke beautiful English as a Mexicana agent, was not a client, and allowed me to drop the stupidest pickup line and only one I ever used in my life when she told me my friend and I were dancing at youth clubs I said "Then show me what adults do in Zacatecas'.
She fluttered her eyes and winked at me and I thought that was that, but then the next day, knowing I was shy, she called me at my clients hotel and asked me out....
Our story was quite famous in Zacatecas during '94, when we met, and we dated by air, because I was a business traveler and she worked for Mexicana, Mexicana gave me free passage from San Francisco to Mexico while we dated.
29 years later, she is a US citizen, and an assistant superintendent to a large Phoenix school district, having previously been a vice principal in Zacatecas at a school that taught English, and she's been with our school system 28 years. When living in Mexico, she met Mexico's President, and in Arizona, we were invited to the Governor's ball when the Arizona Science center opened in Phoenix, because she, I, and her dad worked on the Spanish translations of the English opening exhibits.
The people of Zacatecas are very much like my wife and her family. It is a University town, and one of the wealthiest cities in Mexico, and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
My wife left Mexico not because she did not like Zacatecas--she was a traveler like I was, which motivated her to join me in the US, and we have traveled all over, spanning from Hawaii to Florida, in addition to visits back to Mexico, not only Zacatecas but also Puerto Vallarta, our favorite ocean resort.

The arches at the start were the original water system of this city (I’m assuming the aqueduct at the beginning?) 😜!! No it is a relic and has mostly been restored but is unused. @@FinnDelMundoTravel Well yes and no. It was established in the colonial time period, but many people forget that during the Porfiriato Mexico had a major infraestructural revolution. Porfirio Díaz knocked down many colonial buildings to pave way for French-Mexican style buildings. The market in Zacatecas and most façades in the Main Street are examples of this. They boast Art-Nouveau, Beaux-Arts, and French Neoclassical styles mixed with Mexican baroque. The Porfirian style is truly unique! Bellas Artes and the MUNAL are other great examples of this!
