So I bought this shirt from Costco, and then opened the packet and tried it on at home. I realize that it looks pretty bad on me & the patterns made me feel dizzy. When I went to return it, they ask for a reason. My reason was "It doesn't spark joy". :)
my daughter's scale is 'I love love love it' to 'I love it' otherwise it's 'Mum can we give it to someone who will love it ?' She's managed to keep her drawers in good folded nick despite being a notorious fashion model ... her floor not so much LOL
Hi Laura, this is my 3rd time watching through this series and I am close to halfway through my Kon Mari journey and I absolutely agree about the process being therapeutic. I have healed so much and am growing through the whole thing.
Years and years ago when I first started decluttering (way before KonMari method came along) my husband was horrible about wanting to get rid of stuff ( he had a really bad case of "what if we need it someday") and it was VERY frustrating but now he is on board with "does this bring you joy" question. He doesn't want to actually do any of the decluttering but if I come across something that is his he will make a decision and I have been very proud of him. :) The space I am dreading is the attic! I won't even start it until I have finished every nook and cranny in the main area of the house but I am definitely NOT looking forward to tackling that! I think I have decided I will only pull down what I can handle in 15 or 30 minutes each day because I don't have a space to store all the stuff up there until I can go through it so babysteps it will be! :)
Thank you so much for this video. I am 51, married almost 30 yrs, raised 3 kids....I have STUFF. I read Marie's book several months ago and have been steadily working at her method. You just put to rest all the guilt I have been having over not completing this "perfectly". I too live with a kondo-method-abstainer, so thank you for the ideas on how to live with him through this process!
+How to Get Your Shit Together I have 2 large storage closets upstairs left to tackle. One is stuff I saved from my children's school years (deliver me now), and the other is filled with boxes of antique glassware....I have collected pieces for about 35 yrs, but when you have so much that most of it lives out of site in boxes, it is NOT bringing you joy. Will be selling the pieces my children do not want.
I thought it was so sad the part where your husband was not on board. I've been married for a little over eight years and although very much in love I have not been happy to the point of depressed with my home. Didn't know my husband had hoarding tendencies. Saw videos about the book, told my husband about it ordered the book and read it three times and then sat down and told my husband just how unhappy I was with our home, "we had talked about it before this" . I made my case that we are old and if either of us got sick or disabled how hard it would be to mange with our messy house and what a deep desire I had to have a super clean home. So he at least read some of the book and is on board "thank you Jesus" It's two weeks in and what a difference already, I hope some day your husband will realize that a happy wife equals a happy life.
Everybody's different, I guess. It's just not his "thing". Though, I have to say, he has actually decluttered a few sacks of his clothes since, so not a total lost cause. ;) I can't force him to be neat any more than he can force me to be messy. But I can assure you, we're not unhappy. =)
It must be so hard to live with an avid stuff-collector. I feel I am catching my boyfriend right on time before it becomes a real issue. I know his uncle did develop a full-blown obsession with collecting stuff the decades before he died, it is sad because he couldn't even walk around the house anymore. When he died it put so much stress on my inlaws to get rid of massive amounts of stuff, it took them months because they wanted to get rid of it respectfully and he did have many beautiful and well-made things in between the hoards. I get a bit nervous sometimes when my bf won't let me get rid of a sock with more holes than fabric or an empty rec dvd case. I am not trying to be grim I am sorry if this comes across odd, but it was just one of those things that really makes me want to pursue this method. For his sake too.
anynamebutmyrealone I wouldn't say he's a "collector", just not the best at letting go of things. Like empty boxes, chargers for things he no longer uses, burnt out lightbulbs... >.
Hi Laura! Thanks for all the KonMari videos, really enjoying them. Marie's new book "Spark Joy" is great. You will love it. My partner was not into doing the Method either. What helped me, in addition to your wonderful suggestions is to make the things he wants to keep, "his" things now. So, now his stuff is not my problem and I feel the full benefits of the method. After my Festival, he said he felt a huge energy shift in our home and that he appreciates and understands it. Now, he wants to do it, woohoo, patience rewarded!
+Anne Daly That's amazing! I live in hope. ;) I have "Spark Joy" in my Amazon basket. Just want to add a few more bits before I check out. Can't wait to get it! Thanks for watching, Anne. :D
Thank you so very, very, very much for making this comprehensive video. I am KM-ing and have mostly finished the clothing segment (shoes and coats to go - it is STILL winter here in this part of Canada, so I am waiting for next week's warmer weather). I love your KM/room completion duo idea - PERFECT. Also, I agree with the idea that one only KMs [the first time] once, but that life is life and we are human, so we will definitely be at this process throughout our life in one way or another. It is difficult doing this without my guys on board (I sometimes think "gee, you son are not sparking joy right now..."but I haven't gotten rid of him - yet!). I am basically doing the same and it was good to hear that from you. You totally rock. Thanks, MWA
+Xochi Love Thanks so much! It's definitely difficult when others aren't on board, but I'm hoping to lead by example. One thing I haven't done but that I'm about to implement is to set boundaries. For example, my husband and I have adjacent desks in our home office. Mine is completely clutter-free; his is not. As a result, he keeps stashing things on my desk. I've mentioned it before but I intend to make it very clear now that his stuff shouldn't be encroaching on mine, and that if he needs the extra storage space, he should declutter his own stuff first. Fingers crossed! ;)
+Xochi Love Had the conversation last night. So far so good. Just said that I'd worked hard to clear out all my clutter, so I'd like to keep my space clean and tidy, and that if he wanted a place to stash his stuff, he should consider doing the same. ;) Good luck with yours!
I just learned about the KonMari ways & I'm so glad I came across your videos! I watched the initial video & seeing the follow-up video has been immensely insightful. Us Americans are very indulgent & embrace clutter (hence why we all have anxiety). I've been trying to talk myself into a minimalist lifestyle but that alone gives me anxiety. I think this will be a great start for my home. Thanks for the pure honesty! I love it!
I don't think Americans are the only ones who embrace clutter. ;) Try not to think of it as removing things from your life (which will increase anxiety); think of it as ADDING things to your life. Freedom, joy, space, money, etc. You're replacing the material with something much more meaningful. =) My KonMari playlist with all the videos is here: ruclips.net/p/PL25FgX463_ih5GIRf62EpwbbwGHLc7WxK Hope you find them helpful. And expect more soon. :D
Thank you, I really enjoyed this video! What I discovered after sometime is: OMG, if I knew this before I could have bought that Rolex watch I love so much for so long! (I have 15 swatch watches instead....) what a waste of money all that stuff! What I also discovered that maybe I shop less, but finding stuff I REALLY like is actually quite difficult Made me realize I need to find shops that sell these clothes for example, otherwise you continue buying stuff that is just "good enough". What's difficult for me is getting rid of the stuff I want to sell; that's still in the house.I also want to do it again and I'm curious what "thinking faults" I made by not getting rid of it in the first round.Looking forward to your next konmari tour.
+Mrs Senta I held on to stuff for MONTHS with the intention of selling it. In the end, I just donated it all and never looked back. Knew I could have made a few hundred from selling, but figured donating was better for 2 reasons: 1. Someone who loves it will get it (and at a price they can afford), and 2. The money from the sale goes to help those in need. So it was kind of a double win. (Though I did shed a little tear when I dropped off my daughter's old toys.) And YES to not being able to find anything good enough! My kingdom for a bra that sparks joy AND fits properly. Ha ha. Thanks so much for your lovely comment. Here's to the second time 'round for both of us! ;)
It sounds to me like the method has worked for you! You decluttered things and now are more conscious of the material things in your life. I used to be an impulse shopper and would buy little things here and there, nothing big, nothing really necessary- just more clutter. What I realized was that something was missing in my life that couldn't be supplied by stuff. Now I force myself to wait 24 hours before I buy something. This keeps me from impulse buying which saves me money, guilt, and time as well. I love the way you respected your husband! I'm sure over time, some of your ideas might wear off on him, but you are so right! You can't force someone (especially your spouse) to do what you are doing. I think the trick with keeping things neat and tidy is putting things away and having good routines every day and every week. Thank you for your video- it was very real and so inspirational to me. :). I do have a question- how do you/did you deal with stuff that has emotional attachment- either negative or positive? I'm divorced and was married for nearly 20 years, so a lot of my stuff has an association with my marriage. I have gotten rid of most of it, but it still makes it hard to even try decluttering because I don't want to deal with all the emotions.
I would say it's definitely worked for me, yes, but still waiting for my husband to hop on board. Not holding my breath. 😜 As for emotional stuff, I have 2 pieces of advice: 1: Do what I did and don't even look at the stuff, just dump it all. (I did this with old letters, etc. -- just threw them straight in the fire. It was hard at the time but now I'm free of them.) Or 2 (because #1 is pretty drastic, I admit), put all that stuff in one storage box and allow yourself to keep it. If you're not ready, you're not ready. Sometimes you just have to accept that (as I did with my daughter's cot). Weigh up the pain of keeping it against the pain of getting rid of it. Someday down the line, when you're feeling better about it, take it out and say your goodbyes.
I had this problem, but then added the fly lady method to the Konmari method. I set an alarm for 15 mins every day and do a 'room rescue' each morning and evening. I put things away / sort things out/ clean that room until the timer goes off. Really works! You should try it.
I've never been able to get on board with FlyLady, unfortunately. I tried it a few years ago and it just didn't work out well for me. Maybe I should re-visit...
Where can I start? Ok. Here goes... I just discovered your channel and I absolutely love it ! You are awesome. You keep it real and relatable. I went through my KonMari journey this past year. I too have a husband who is not on board with the method. And I don't have the patience of a saint lol. So there's been some conflict there. I'm trying to be more understanding/patient but I agree it's friggin hard at times. I haven't regretted anything I've purged either. And I also absolutely agree that the process isn't really something you will only go through once. Life changes and therefore the things you want/need around you will change too. Thanks so much for sharing. Your videos are great.
Thanks so much, Donna. :D It's definitely much more difficult when you share a space with a person who isn't into the idea. I have a general "if you're not the one cleaning it, you don't get a say in what happens to it" policy. Actually, I have a blog post going up on Monday about 6 ways to stay sane when you live with a messy person. =)
Thank you for sharing and being honest ! I just started the method. I'm glad to hear others did the same go room by room. I just subscribed to your channel. Can't wait to see you're future videos! 😊
A designated place for the stuff is a must. I have a closet I put all my crap in. Then it starts making its way to my car so I can get rid of it. It's a lot of work but SO worth it. I haven't read her book BTW , just doing it on my own
Hi. I love your videos and channel. I love how open and honest you are. Thanks for sharing the personal stuff bcz it makes your experiences more real to me. 2 years ago, I downsized by 2/3rds. 2/3rds gone. I got rid of 125 bags or big items. This time, I downsized by at least half, not using konmari, just doing it bcz I wanted to. This time, I got rid of 95 bags or big items. I'm feeling pretty good right now! =)
Yours is the first KM video I've sat through and just what I was looking for, I don't usually just sit and listen to someone talk for even five minutes, but I wanted so much to hear how this method has been beneficial to someone, see how it might benefit me. I've done a few categories and already notice that I use the "spark joy" when making all kinds of decisions, like choosing whether to go out to an event or stay home. This is a decision I've always found so difficult, but now that I've refined my spark joy sensitivity, I find it much easier. Life has been interfering in my ability to complete the method for the past few weeks and finally the day has arrived when I get to begin working on it again. I was looking for motivation and inspiration and that's what I found in your video. Time to take a sip of the Konmari Koolaid and get started. Thanks! I'll be watching more of your videos.
Hurray! :D Well done on making a start AND on incorporating it into other areas of your life. I find myself doing that a lot too. What would say has been the biggest benefit you've come across so far?
Excellent and funny review! I have started my journey and am on the books and papers. I had 4 garbage bags ful of shredded paper and 8 bags of clothes! I agree with you about the holidays. I couldnt' wait to take down my decorations. My roommate is a hoarder and he is not on board with this. In the shared area, I can hardly wait to get back to my space just to get away from his clutter. Again great review
+MsBea100 Thanks so much! It's so hard when not everyone in the house is on board, but it's definitely still worth doing, I think. Sounds like you're doing a great job. Keep it up. :D
Congrats on your journey and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree with the fact that with this method it's 100% easier to CLEAN! You aren't moving stuff to clean other stuff! I also hope that I can embrace the idea of less shopping!! I too also need to think long and hard before buying things, especially skin care and makeup items. I'm an esthetician, so my shopping habits there can get crazy. I'm committing myself now to these two ideas where beauty items are concerned...1. For every new item I want to buy, I have to either use something up that is similar, or 2.) throw something away that I don't like/use that is similar. As for living with someone not on board, my hubby is the SAME. I try to reason, but he gives me grief. I just leave him alone and hope he follows my (graceful) example. I actually caught him curbing an old ripped suitcase that he had for 15 years that he flat out refused to trash. He did it, a few weeks later, ONLY after he told me NO, thinking I didn't know!!
Love your videos and your attitude about life!!!! 😊😊 I am in the middle of the process right now and like you said it definitely makes you stop and really analyze, "do I really need this crap?" I found another book that someone wrote that feeds off this one that you might like too called, "The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck: How to Stop Spending Time You Don't Have with People You Don't Like Doing Things You Don't Want to Do". My husband told me about it and he is going to read it. Thanks again for being real and honest with us. Very refreshing.
Couldn't agree more with your statement that shopping is no longer fun! I make almost no impulse purchases 6 months on; I now know what I need and use and like having, so all of the "in case" purchases, plus the frivolous purchases, are gone. One of the funniest things for me, though, is that I've started repairing my clothes and shoes. Since the only ones I have left are the ones I truly love, when one of them loses a button or gets a tear, I fix it! Before, I would put them into a pile to mend "later." I was amazed that that prediction of Marie Kondo's was actually true!
Thank you for taking the time and your energy for doing this series. I bought the book a bit ago and you guessed it. It sat on my nightstand buried in the clutter. Watching your videos was the prompt I needed to put it into action. Thank you so much. I'm finding it easier to do sections of a room at a time. It might not be the exact protocol but hey, stuff is getting done. Truth is I watch and listen to your videos and clean. Thx again.
It's great that you've found a system that works for you. Happy to be the kick up the arse you needed. 😉 Thanks so much for watching. Best of luck with it! Happy to answer any questions if I can. 🙂
I LOVE your videos!!! You are a lovely lady. I use to keep EVERYTHING and was afraid to throw things away. My husband is a hoarder and actually had to have therapy and be on meds for bi-polar disorder. Last year I had breast cancer and that was when I realized that all this CRAP we had and were saving, plus the money we spent on storage lockers was CRAZY!! We got rid of about 85% of everything when we moved with my daughter and her husband from Florida to Kansas. Now my husband is disabled and need a walker to walk. I take care of him 24/7. He does not collect stuff anymore, but my daughter is a bit of a hoarder and it's very upsetting to see.
Sounds like you did a wonderful job decluttering all the crap from your life. I hope your health has improved since then, particularly if you're caring for your husband. I can only imagine how hard that must be at times. You are a true inspiration. Hopefully your daughter will get the help she needs before things get out of hand. I'm sure, having been through it yourself, you realise that nobody can force her to change, but maybe you could simply sit with her and explain what it was like for you and what your life is like now that you've decided to let go of a lot of stuff. If nothing else, it may plant a seed and give her food for thought. Nothing will happen overnight of course but, over time, if she sees how much love and support she has, and she watches you lead by example, she may decide to make some changes.
Thank you so much for your reply and support. I just received my copy of Marie Kondo's book. After I read it I will pass it along to my daughter. I feel positive she will come around. She lived in a home of clutter her whole life (25 years), so I think she is ready to move on to better things.!
I've been considering the KonMari Method for a few months on and off and I'm so glad that I accidentally stumbled upon your video. Thank you very much for discussing the subject of a partner or spouse not "being on board". It's actually one of the excuses that I've used to justify to myself why it might all be an exercise in futility. Discussing your experience with that has made me realize that I will reap some of the benefits regardless of my husband's reticence about it. Wish me luck!
I loved how you put things into perspective. How you analyze what you are doing why you doing what’s the results of doing so. That’s good stuff. You are so funny, you made me LOL while watching this video and multitasking. I agreed with you about the KonMari method that it’s not a once in a lifetime decluttering because things changes and you as a person change, like losing weight and gaining weight. That comes with the territory of buy new clothes. I think there will always be a pro-con of doing things. But you’re the one person that does the RUclips channel and say it like it is. Love your show.
I agree with your theory of category & kimono, as well as get rid of it right away. I also agree its not a once in a lifetime thing, but I think it helps you to maintain tidyness. I haven't read the book, but I've watched some of the videos. I did cloths and my bedroom at the same time, and the bathroom was an all at once thing. But books is still just that 1 category. I started on paper, but am doing my kitchen also, only doing a small amount at a time. Thank you for this video, you did have some very good points.
i actually discovered this book by accident at my public library. shelf browsing really paid off that day, i absolutely tore through it (no pun intended)
You are fantastic and spot on in every way!! I know what you mean when you said the Christmas stuff didn't feel so great and was happy when you could put it all away (not your words exactly). Really enjoyed this video, thank you so much!
Loved this video! You expressed a lot of my thoughts also. I can't wait to see your upcoming KonMari videos as you redo the method. I have finished the first go-around in our main home area but have the basement and garage area to do. I'm procrastinating on both! I know once I start I will be fine. It's just the beginning to do it that's so hard. Keep up the good work, Laura!
+Anne Larrabee Thanks so much, Anne. :D It was a labour of love and well worth my time and effort, so I'm excited to do it all again. Best of luck with your basement and garage! It was consistently my experience that categories were never as bad as I thought they were going to be. =)
100% agree. I'm a college student and I live with my brother, parents and at school 3 roommates. I love them all but their clutter/ non-neat-freakness bothers me. Mostly, I run into my own room and start cleaning.
+Theresa Glass So happy you found it helpful, Theresa! I did videos for all the categories if you wanna check out my playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL25FgX463_ih5GIRf62EpwbbwGHLc7WxK Might help you as you're going along. =) Best of luck with it!
+How to Get Your Shit Together There will always be someone who will remark on something. I watch an Italian youtuber who speaks English, and she got criticism on her accent! C'mon...
Isn't crazy how aware of clutter now. I went to a friend's place and just about panicked at the amount of clutter. Her second book Spark Joy actually covers a lot if things you talked about in depth like dealing with your families things and your feelings about them. I honestly thought I didn't need to read Spark Joy, because I was really happy with the amount I already tidied, but I'm so glad I did. I recommend you pick it up since you're going to decapitated again. It's such a great companion to the first book. I can't wait to watch you tackle the method again.
Heavens I hate writing on my phone. Please don't decapitate you or the ones you love. lol. I meant declutter. Also all those other typos. oh and I wanted to mention that I've become a "mall walker". I just go out to the shops for some excercise and maybe a tea.
+jazzjazzjess Ha ha. I've cancelled the decapitation. ;) I have the book in my Amazon basket but just waiting to add a few more things before I order. Excited to read it!
Sorry about that. I saw the video after I had posted the comment. Definitely going to have to get that book and read it. I love your accent too. I have family that came from Ireland and have always wanted to visit.
I'm gonna try it! I will save my craft room for last because that will be hard. I went through a drawer last night and did the shirt folding method and it is a game changer! I don't think I will be folding underwear anytime soon though LOL!
Ha ha. I don't blame you! Have you seen my folding video? I cover pretty much everything in it: ruclips.net/video/mZH8-hG2y2Y/видео.html You may be surprised by the craft stuff though. I thought stationery would be really difficult for me but it turned out to be one of the easiest categories.
yes, your folding video was great, I weeded out my non-sweater tops and folded like you showed, game changer! Still not folding undies tho:) I worry about the craft stuff since it is my business as well and it ALL sparks joy...well almost all of it. I blush to think of how many watercolor palettes I own LOL! I am wondering if I should separate supplies I teach with from my own personal supplies. I am definitely going to break it down to smaller categories. I had your playlist on while I worked on books today. The hardest thing is if you can remember if a book is yours or hubbies.
If it all genuinely brings you joy, then why worry? 🙂 I think people get anxious because they feel they HAVE to get rid of something. But if the stuff genuinely brings you joy (and I know from your channel how much you love crafting), then there's no problem. 🙂 As for books, my husband basically only reads 2 types: American football related, or something historical. So there's never any crossover. 😂 But it definitely gets harder when you come to the joint stuff.
Just about to embark on this journey for spring break and I found this so helpful. I have I husband that I think will enjoy certain parts of this. For example, he is very non materilistic in general. However, he also has a hard time with change. So I will be holding on to all of his things as well. I might put them in different places which will likely require some warning. :p
Random Shit absolutely needs to be a category!! I kept the check list of the categories on my fridge and checked them off like a little kid... It's dumb but it made me feel like I was accomplishing things lol the big disaster was a bag of clothing that sparked a lot of Joy was mistakenly donated... Even though they were my favorites it only hurt for a day or two and now I don't care ☺
It's amazing how much we can live without, isn't it? Even things we think we'd never part with. Life goes on. Are you all done and dusted now? Do you think you'd ever redo it?
+How to Get Your Shit Together I still have Kitchen komono which is my weekend project ! Absolutely see myself doing this again someday, you're right life changes, you change, your situation changes ...it's common sense that it will come in handy again. And I'm a bit like you, I'm almost excited to see what I can live without lol
I recently saw an old picture of what my bedroom used to look like... HORRIFIED! I hadn't noticed much of a change as I was going along, so it was nice (and shocking) to see the dramatic change. All that stuff I don't even remember, nevermind miss!
I put my clothes donation into black sacks/carrier bags and then when I finished the room sent them to the boot of the car .The clean stuff went straight back neatly in drawers/hung up so I didn't hyperventilate with the amount of everything . Then like you are planning finish the room . I did the bedlinens for each room as I went along with my clothes . Feel the hubby thing too but like marie says stick to your own stuff and people may change ...my teen boys were wowed by the results and went on to store their drawers in konmari stylee until the loft conversion was done and now all three who were shoehorned in one room , has his own pad , with konmari approved sweeps through every few months (they are allergic to putting stuff away too)when they add new clothes to their wardrobes .
I find that scanning the laundry after it's cleaned before ironing is a quick way to shift stuff without the big hoo ha of pulling out full wardrobes ... so eventually only joyful good nick stuff get put back and my sons are forced to use something else in their drawers . What is it about guys and not using 80% of their clothes just same old t shirts for days on end ? ...sigh Guess I need the help of a prospective GF to get them to consider changing more often. I remember having the 'holey' sock conversation with the hubby aparrently he was emotionally invested ... no words
Can definitely relate to some points in this - I have been sloooowly doing the method for a few months now and have gotten rid of a lot of stuff. I was in a certain very cheap Irish clothes shop tonight, looking for a few specific items - and I just felt a bit depressed. So much rubbish, so much clutter, so much consumption... ugh.
Yeah, shopping has never been the same for me. Overall, it's a positive thing, though. I'm spending a lot less money, I'm much more aware of what I already have and what I genuinely need, and making a purchase now makes me MUCH happier than it ever did before. Have you much more to do? P.S. Was it Penneys? ;)
Haha, yes. It was Penneys. All I could see was my local recycling centre with all the clothes recycling bins crammed and overflowing with clothes, some still with labels on. Depresso. I do enjoy buying more high quality stuff now, and the stuff I have I LOVE. 2 pairs of well-fitting Topshop jeans makes me much happier than 10 pairs of rubbish Penneys jeans!
Same! I do still buy the occasional thing from Penneys (handy for vest tops, etc.) but it takes a lot to catch my eye (and stretch my credit card) these days. When I think of all the clothes I sent to the charity shop or the dump... **shudder**
I definitely agree with things getting difficult once you get to komono. I breezed through the other categories in one week, but I've kind of been stumped this last week. Maybe I will try the category-then-room method. It would be nice to see some actual difference in at least one room.
Lol, we may be sisters from a previous lifetime. I am a chronic clutterer, forever leaving things where I last used them rather than putting them away. AND I really, really dislike cleaning, even though, as you say, there is less in the way once the decluttering is done. In the end, we are still who we are!
@@HowToGYST I'm doing it my own way, actually. My house is a huge one (4 floors) so I take it easy. I've got 3 kids, so life changes constantly, as objects needed do. I took the #konmari concept and adapted to my own way of living and decluttering. Warm regards from Spain. ❤️
Hi there, new subbie, I had Konmari-ed my socks an that brought e a lot of joy bu...um the rest is not as easy. Came here to see if it was worth it and I appreciate your candid humorous way of being. Just wanted to say Thanks. Really glad to hear from you views. But the washi? LOL I have 421 rolls. Not gonna touch that.
😂 Break them down into bunches of 10-20 and work your way through them. You'll get there! It's definitely a slog but keep plugging away at it. If you keep going, you'll eventually get through every single thing in your home. 🙂
I started this last year but I soon found that it was difficult with a husband and two children. My husband is the worst. He keeps empty cardboard boxes just incase he wants to sell his things in the future. He has piles of books, cd's, dvd's. It is really frustrating because I felt I got rid of as much as I could. The method would work better for people who live alone in my opinion.
+Tina Conn Agree 100%. My husband is the exact same -- piles of stuff everywhere, including empty boxes. He claims they're not doing any "harm" by just sitting on a shelf, but then complains that we lack storage space. Bah! It is difficult but, in my opinion, doing your own stuff is still better than doing nothing. So kudos to you!
I am "in charge" of my house and doing laundry and organizing things so I make excutive decisions and things just disappear. Sorry, not sorry, they just got konmarie'd. haha. I wouldn't do it to anything important to them and they almost never notice anything is gone and if they do I say it's gone and why and tell them it's time to shop for a new whatever if they need one. So far just a nod and they wander off.
yeah it's absolutely not a once in a lifetime thing. i agree. you change and grow in so many ways over time - like i've grown hugely in the last 6 months. Comparing me to me 3 years ago? i'm unrecognisable! I've done this twice already - sooping up for a 3rd time.
I have started this program. I think working by category works great for me. One thing I will say is there is no way I would take some items like the closet and take everything out. Way too much work. I did it with the smaller things like cabinets and drawers. The decluttering is so freeing. I have some videos on my channel if anyone is interested.
It's definitely a lot of work, particularly if you have a big closet. I think the reason she recommends it though is that, often, we're shocked by the volume of things we have when we see them all together.
Lol that's exactly how I feel about Xmas! Hubby calls me 'the grinch'. Growing up my Mum used to pull the tree down on Boxing Day - and that's how I roll too.😂😮 In saying that, as my daughter is 4 and loves Xmas, I have had to refrain from my Boxing Day antics.😔😏
Oh I love Xmas. I put our tree up on December 1st! But last year was the first year that I couldn't wait to get the stuff back down. Not a feeling I'm used to! Normally I want to leave the stuff up year-round. Ha ha.
+june ingram Yes! It's hard to feel an impact in a room when, for example, you clear out a closet or cupboard. All the clean stuff is hidden, but all the clutter is still visible. Can get a little demotivating at times.
I know this is old, but I wanted to say this: i think the wisest thing you say in this video is the part about not wanting to shop being a downside. I think reduced consumerism is great for all, but I also think the elephant in the room is never acknowledged - we love to acquire. The way I move through a charity shop sometimes makes me think I would have been just the best fucking gatherer in the land. My cave would be decorated with berry juice drawings in all the shades, y'know? We'd have such good diets. It doesn't do any good to ignore our nature and the effect those foraging behaviours have on our moods! Editing to say: coming from the future, knowing my postman SO well since the pandemic hit home, I really think the way we get stuff is important too. I replaced in shop behaviour with ebay before it all but it definitely became exacerbated. So many postal miles!
I love your channel name! It literally made me laugh so hard! Have a great day :) xox! and awesome video btw :) I recently did a huge clean out of my apartment. I threw away 5 laundry baskets of junk/ clothes etc. 3 large garbage bags of random crap accumulated and more and more things. I still have a bunch of things to go through but its definitely 90 percent better. Also been trying to get the hubbie to help with cleaning, who isnt so keen on that so it makes it difficult.
Same situation here, Karlynn, but anything you do yourself will still reap massive rewards so don't be discouraged! Sounds like you're already well on the way! :D
Your analysis of the KonMari method is detailed and inspiring. When I watch your videos I never want them to end! You motivate me and help me to get going on this process myself. Just went through all my books in my office--a daunting array, but I did it! Next up is to create homes for the remainder. Looking forward to that actually. Thank you for your perseverance with doing each category and letting us accompany you on your adventures. Totally appreciated.
Thank you for making this video. I appreciated your answers. I am about to START the Konmari Method. It's encouraging to hear positives but also have realistic expectations. You mentioned you are going through it again. Are you using "Spark Joy" this time? I love your channel and your spunk!
I am. I have a few videos up already of my second time doing the Method. I'm constantly amazed at how much stuff I can get rid of... and still think I have loads! 😂 I referenced "Spark Joy" a lot while I was researching for my KonMari folding video.
You know its fantastic that you had your shit together enough to actually record your progress in the first place! Man do i wish that id taken some before photos! Thank you for sharing your journey and thoughts and experience. It has given me confidence and your videos have motivated me to go for it. Also ive been worried about how my husband will take it all. I dont plan on going out of my way to explain it all as i think he’ll think that saying goodbye to a piece of clothing is a bit crazy lol! Im hoping that as they see the changes arond the place and as it becomes less cluttered and tidyer and ultimately cleaner that they may get curious, ask questions and pop on board? If i had a question it would be about the kitchen i think. Im not sure how to tackle that :/ i mean, do you do food stuffs etc? Thats one im worried about especially as my husband equally uses the kitchen (he cooks on weekends). Anyway, I have a 16 year old boy 12 year old boy and 5 year old girl and a 6 bedroom home. I also have 2 businesses so yeah my home has been getting the better of me, especially as sometimes i have been not much use due to back pain. So over time the house and clutter have built up and Ive been drowning in it. Ive asked for help with keeping it tidy but it falls on deaf ears. This method and your vidoes... Thats REAL help and thankyou, for your honesty, your humour, your intelligence and your wit :) Good luck with your move and keep in touch :) all the best to you and your family x
Hi Janice. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. =) Yes, I included food as part of the kitchen process, breaking it up into refrigerated, frozen, spices/seasonings/oils/sauces, other food, and drinks. The video for the first time I did it is here: ruclips.net/video/eY7jfSnrMqs/видео.html and the second time is here: ruclips.net/video/bQAsy52ApFw/видео.html I talk about how I managed to do it without killing my husband. ;) Happy to answer any other questions you have. =)
I was so happy to hear that this mot hod drastically reduces one's will to go shopping. I am looking forward to saving a little cash. I have purchased a new home and refuse to bring all that clutter from the old house to the new one. It is a shame that your husband won't even try this method, just once. It doesn't make sense to me. It's not like he can't go back to a way he may be more comfortable. Marriage is a lot of compromise.
Haven't read the other comments, but have you plans to read/review her 2nd book "Spark Joy"? ps finally this week got all boxed clutter out to thriftstore! Definitely agree with you on incorporating that task into one's application of the KM.
+CMS Sultana Just finished Spark Joy yesterday. :D Lots of extra tips and explanations but, for me, still nowhere near as good or "life-changing" as the first book. HURRAY for getting rid of all the clutter! It's a great feeling, isn't it?
I relate so much on what you say! I thought that I was messy because I never put a thing where iI took it, but I actually never thought that I own so much stuff... KM writes actually that she still has to maintain the decluttered space once a year, so maybe you can count that first massive decluttering as "once in a lifetime" event. And I had huge problems with my old toys ;( (yup I am 27 y.o.)
Yes, there's definitely a large element of "maintenance" involved. I read an interview with her recently and she also recommends re-doing the Method if you have a big life change, so it was nice to have that clarified. 🙂 And don't worry, I still have a large amount of my old toys and books from when I was a kid. And I'm 33. 😉
I'm trying to fully start the method, only sock drawer done so far - but it has stayed neat and organized! I too live with someone not on board at all... it makes it so hard. :(
It definitely does, but not impossible. I started 2 years ago and, even though my husband never fully got on board, he's cleared out a lot of his clothes, and he agreed to let go of some joint stuff. So hang in there! It's still worth doing. You'll be amazed at how much you can get rid of.
Hi, I am just on the Books category. I am an Interior Designer, a messy person, but good organizer. I have to ask you about you not putting your brush and comb away... they should have a place near where you actually brush and comb your hair. Everything should be stored where you use them, that should help.
Yes, the place I keep them is right where I brush my hair. But so is the bed. ;) I've no idea why I do it. I think it may be because the bed is where I normally lay things out in the morning -- my outfit, bag, anything I need, etc. -- so it feels natural to place things there when I'm getting ready. I have become MUCH better at putting the brush back these days though. =) The point I was making was that, no matter how close and convenient a home for something, it's still hard to break old, bad habits about where you fling your stuff. But practice makes perfect! Good luck with books! =)
I am in the process and trying to convince my mother since she is in the middle of a move and found things she had for 30+ years. Thankfully, so far, my husband is on board but my father has pulled items out of the trash and wants to hold onto things "in case someone needs it". His heart is in a good place, but the habit is not.
It's hard to break the habit of a lifetime, I guess, particularly if you're of a generation who saw war or economic depression. Be thankful your husband is on board. Mine still isn't.
It's a matter of developing new habits. It takes about three times longer to develop a good habit than a bad one. Missing things you dumped? I got rid of cable TV eight years ago, and I've never missed it. Same concept.
Some people have stuff in the same category in every room of their house. Makes it difficult to find all the stuff. Especially if they are in unsorted boxes. Kathy B.
That's exactly why the KonMari Method recommends gathering everything from the same category into one place. It's tricky, but it forces you to go through everything with a fine-tooth comb. No stone left unturned.
I don't even wanna decorate for Christmas. I have a nativity scene that I keep year round, that's enough. and some small paper stars that can be put away. I don't have kids..
IT can be very frustrating to feel as if your doing the same cleaning and tidying up over and over to why even bother right? Has to be a routine and feels good when it is done. Hopefully the family will notice. ONly until I had an injury did the family realize what all I did and they had to help out. They magically see it all after it is done not the pile up.
my beloved has 1200+ books. recently he gave me one to re-home. I was so excited.
I'm binge watching HTGYST and I'm so loving these videos and the humour and how down to earth they are.
Me too! Inspiring!
So I bought this shirt from Costco, and then opened the packet and tried it on at home. I realize that it looks pretty bad on me & the patterns made me feel dizzy. When I went to return it, they ask for a reason. My reason was "It doesn't spark joy". :)
😂 An exceptional reason!
Out of curiosity, did you buy both of her books?
I did. =) I felt the first was a game-changer whereas the second was just some interesting additional reading.
I try to keep it in mind when I'm tidying up, asking if I really want to continue tidying up that thing or if I'd be happier letting it to. =)
my daughter's scale is 'I love love love it' to 'I love it' otherwise it's 'Mum can we give it to someone who will love it ?' She's managed to keep her drawers in good folded nick despite being a notorious fashion model ... her floor not so much LOL
Hi Laura, this is my 3rd time watching through this series and I am close to halfway through my Kon Mari journey and I absolutely agree about the process being therapeutic. I have healed so much and am growing through the whole thing.
That's wonderful! It can definitely teach us a lot about ourselves, and help us work through past issues.
The space I am dreading is the attic!
You're so very welcome; I'm so glad you found it helpful. Do you have much left to do?
+How to Get Your Shit Together I have 2 large storage closets upstairs left to tackle. One is stuff I saved from my children's school years (deliver me now), and the other is filled with boxes of antique glassware....I have collected pieces for about 35 yrs, but when you have so much that most of it lives out of site in boxes, it is NOT bringing you joy. Will be selling the pieces my children do not want.
I just love your style ! You make me laugh ! Thank you very much for your honesty 😊
Thank you very much your comment! So glad you like it. :D
Though, I have to say, he has actually decluttered a few sacks of his clothes since, so not a total lost cause. ;)
I can't force him to be neat any more than he can force me to be messy. But I can assure you, we're not unhappy. =)
How to Get Your Shit Together I am so happy to hear that, the best to both of you
And to you. :D
I really appreciate your humor and sincerity. Thank you for sharing your insights.
Thanks for listening to them. 😉
Fingers crossed! ;)
+How to Get Your Shit Together Great idea. I think this will need to be an approach I will need to follow-through with as well.
My KonMari playlist with all the videos is here: ruclips.net/p/PL25FgX463_ih5GIRf62EpwbbwGHLc7WxK Hope you find them helpful.
(Though I did shed a little tear when I dropped off my daughter's old toys.)
And YES to not being able to find anything good enough! My kingdom for a bra that sparks joy AND fits properly. Ha ha.
Thanks so much for your lovely comment. Here's to the second time 'round for both of us! ;)
Really appreciate your honesty and evaluation. It's taking me FOREVER the first time. Yes, the "spark joy" concept is eye-opening.
+seriela Took me a few hours here and there over 8 months, so don't feel disheartened! The important thing is that you're making progress. =)
As for emotional stuff, I have 2 pieces of advice: 1: Do what I did and don't even look at the stuff, just dump it all.
Annika Hart Love Flylady method! Now I am using a combination of Flylady/KonMarie/Death Cleaning.
I so appreciate your thought process and your intrinsic idiosyncrasies~
You say "idiosyncrasies", my husband says "craziness". ;)
;)
Thanks. I will definitely be checking out your blog. Great to hear from you.
You should be on 'Just a Minute'. Seriously. Fab channel, intelligent and creative. Thanks.
I've no idea what that is but THANK YOU. =)
Thank you for sharing and being honest ! I just started the method. I'm glad to hear others did the same go room by room. I just subscribed to your channel. Can't wait to see you're future videos! 😊
+Patricia Pena Thanks so much, Patricia. :D
A designated place for the stuff is a must. I have a closet I put all my crap in. Then it starts making its way to my car so I can get rid of it. It's a lot of work but SO worth it. I haven't read her book BTW , just doing it on my own
It is a must, and it's the part I struggle with most, I think. I'd highly recommend reading the book if you can get your hands on a copy, though. 🙂
+Kristy Flud Already did a review of the "Not Giving a F*ck" book: ruclips.net/video/ACGUTp8anwY/видео.html :D Thanks, Kristy!
+Maria Clevy Ha ha. Another thing I've started doing is hand-washing my bras! I take much better care of my stuff overall.
The book is excellent; I really hope you enjoy it. And also that it touches your daughter's heart too and she takes it on board. Good luck!
Thank you! I do too.
I really like your sense of humor and your Witt! Your thoughts make a lot of sense to me.
I like to hear Gaelic!! Thanks again!!
Love your full and frank review; just subscribed to you - thanks for a great 25 minutes spent with you; gorgeous accent, too!
+Sarah Johnson Ha ha, the accent's pretty popular alright. ;) Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! :D
Best of luck! It's especially beneficial if you're the one who does most of the cleaning because it will make the job much easier. =)
Loved your video and how down to earth you are 😊 you have a new subscriber in me
+urbanmiss26 Hurray! Thank you! :D
What a difference. Ive been watching 2019,2018 and 2017, 2016 so much calmer.
Less confident and comfortable on camera back then. And had no idea what to say. 😂
@@HowToGYST you got your shit together now!!
I agree with you about the fun being removed from shopping. But it's replaced with the fun of having more in savings!!
100% agree. I'm a college student and I live with my brother, parents and at school 3 roommates. I love them all but their clutter/ non-neat-freakness bothers me. Mostly, I run into my own room and start cleaning.
It's a constant struggle!
Thank you. Very well put. I just started this and had all the questions you've just shared. Again thank you so much.
+Theresa Glass So happy you found it helpful, Theresa! I did videos for all the categories if you wanna check out my playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL25FgX463_ih5GIRf62EpwbbwGHLc7WxK
Might help you as you're going along. =) Best of luck with it!
Thanks for the candidness. Love your way of thinking and expressing yourself.
+Anat Katz Thank you. :D Not everyone's a fan. ;)
+How to Get Your Shit Together There will always be someone who will remark on something. I watch an Italian youtuber who speaks English, and she got criticism on her accent! C'mon...
+Anat Katz I've been criticised for swearing. Know what I plan on doing about it? Fuck all. ;)
+How to Get Your Shit Together hahaha 😁 even your title wasn't written by Pollyanna
+Anat Katz Ha ha. Yeah. The clue's in the title, people. ;)
Yup, I hear you. Living with a hoarder as well. I've attempted on several occasions to declutter his stuff. Pointless.
+Jennifer Jacinto It's a pain that never ends!
Excellent video! You answered all of my questions. Thanks :)
Brilliant. You're very welcome. :D
Sorry about that. I saw the video after I had posted the comment. Definitely going to have to get that book and read it. I love your accent too. I have family that came from Ireland and have always wanted to visit.
+Kristy Flud Ha ha, the accent has proved pretty popular alright. What part of Ireland are your family from, do you know?
I do so enjoy your videos and your wealth of wisdom.
thank you for the honest recap:)
You're welcome. Are you doing the Method too?
I'm gonna try it! I will save my craft room for last because that will be hard. I went through a drawer last night and did the shirt folding method and it is a game changer! I don't think I will be folding underwear anytime soon though LOL!
Ha ha. I don't blame you! Have you seen my folding video? I cover pretty much everything in it: ruclips.net/video/mZH8-hG2y2Y/видео.html
You may be surprised by the craft stuff though.
As for books, my husband basically only reads 2 types: American football related, or something historical.
Definitely worth giving a heads up. 😉 Have you explained any of the Method to him?
Thank you. you gave me hope that I am able to declutter!
You can! 🙂
Yeah, you really have to get into a groove with it, whatever way works best for you and your family. 🙂
I remember having the 'holey' sock conversation with the hubby aparrently he was emotionally invested ... no words
😂 My husband's the opposite -- he'll wear something for 5 minutes and throw it in the laundry. 😩
I think we're twins. Notebooks and pens are like organs to me. Can't live without them.
They're like my left and right arms.
+Chessie Leal Definitely worth a shot! Hope it works. x
Lol, we may be sisters from a previous lifetime. I am a chronic clutterer, forever leaving things where I last used them rather than putting them away. AND I really, really dislike cleaning, even though, as you say, there is less in the way once the decluttering is done. In the end, we are still who we are!
I think you're 100% right. Very inspiring, thanks for sharing. 💚
You're very welcome. Have you done the Method? How did you find it?
Bravo from a Parisian point of view and moreover for your good sense of humour in this sharing. 💨
Merci beaucoup! 🙂
Hi ,binge watching ur videos 💕 love them ! I noticed your voice has changed a lot in the newer vlogs since this earlier one .
+Tina Conn OMG, I am like your husband!
gah! my hubby is exactly the same. he doesn't want to actually keep a broken light bulb but somehow it NEVER EVER makes it into the bin .... sigh
I agree, my husband also keeps the “just in case” stuff too.
yeah it's absolutely not a once in a lifetime thing. i agree. you change and grow in so many ways over time - like i've grown hugely in the last 6 months. Comparing me to me 3 years ago? i'm unrecognisable! I've done this twice already - sooping up for a 3rd time.
I have just found your channel. You are fabulous. Thanks for a great video
+Michelle Davis
Ha ha.
I agree about concentrating on one room at a time as I find I can get lots of bin bags of rubbish out of the house but house looks no different
+june ingram Yes! It's hard to feel an impact in a room when, for example, you clear out a closet or cupboard. All the clean stuff is hidden, but all the clutter is still visible. Can get a little demotivating at times.
Fabulous stop full recap. Thanks for sharing
Sorry couldn't edit my comment I think this is a wonderful video!
Great, spot on review!
Thanks so much. 😁
Yes, I included food as part of the kitchen process, breaking it up into refrigerated, frozen, spices/seasonings/oils/sauces, other food, and drinks.
The video for the first time I did it is here: ruclips.net/video/eY7jfSnrMqs/видео.html
and the second time is here: ruclips.net/video/bQAsy52ApFw/видео.html
I talk about how I managed to do it without killing my husband. ;)
Happy to answer any other questions you have. =)
Thank you x
Thank you. That was extremely helpful.
You're very welcome. Are you about to start the Method?
I was so happy to hear that this mot hod drastically reduces one's will to go shopping. I am looking forward to saving a little cash. I have purchased a new home and refuse to bring all that clutter from the old house to the new one. It is a shame that your husband won't even try this method, just once. It doesn't make sense to me. It's not like he can't go back to a way he may be more comfortable. Marriage is a lot of compromise.
I like to think - which would I prefer - the item or the money
This is a GREAT video...very real and honest!!
Thank you!

i absolutely adore you!
+Brianna V.B. Ha ha. Thank you! Replied to your other comment too. =)
Bertie Wooster music - love it!
And don't worry, I still have a large amount of my old toys and books from when I was a kid. And I'm 33.
Love you! Very inspiring and gets me moving!
Hurray! Are you doing the Method?
I just loved your videos 🙌🏼
Thanks so much, I really appreciate that. :D
This is full of great advice!! Thank you!
You're very welcome. Glad you found it helpful. 🙂
great insight. thank you!
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching. 🙂
Excellent video......
I'm doing this again with your check list to keep me accountable
Wonderful! Best of luck. :D
Awesome video!
It's a matter of developing new habits. It takes about three times longer to develop a good habit than a bad one. Missing things you dumped? I got rid of cable TV eight years ago, and I've never missed it. Same concept.
ur hysterical. subscribing now!
:D Thanks so much!
Good job!
Thanks! 😁
I don't even wanna decorate for Christmas. I have a nativity scene that I keep year round, that's enough. and some small paper stars that can be put away. I don't have kids..
Do whatever makes you happy. =)
Great info! Thank you!
You're very welcome. 🙂
Thanks for making it ok to break the rules! :)
IT can be very frustrating to feel as if your doing the same cleaning and tidying up over and over to why even bother right?
Has to be a routine and feels good when it is done. Hopefully the family will notice. ONly until I had an injury did the family realize
what all I did and they had to help out. They magically see it all after it is done not the pile up.
