    I like the "would it spark joy if you have to clean it" criteria myself. I know it's worth keeping if I'd rather clean it regularly then get rid of it. That helped me get rid of a lot of "useful" things. :)

      Really good way of deciding, I've tried this thinking and always the item is of no value, monetary or sentimental.

      I often ask myself "If this item was in the house of an ex boyfriend I didn't like, would I make the effort to get it back?"
      It works a treat 😂

    My daughter and grandson lived with me for 5 years. We were doing my annual “cut all my stuff in half” project. I raised my kids the same way. To the point...decision fatigue set in and the biggest fight we ever had was over where a pack of markers would find their home! Crazy!!! Decision Fatigue is real. Stop and take a break before anyone gets hurt.

    Hey Laura, I had to tell you what happened! I have been watching your videos, and others, and I subscribed. I am 63, and have been decluttering, dejunking, minimalizing, reorganizing, and even some remodeling. I have also been shredding and recycling paperwork. This morning, I got up and my husband said his friend was coming over and he would just meet him in the garage. I looked around my clean, neat and tidy house, and said he should just invite him in for coffee. I washed my face, put on clothes, brushed my teeth, put on mascara, and welcomed this man into my house. I was proud of how it looked. There were no papers, or dishes, or shoes, or blankets, or anything lying anywhere. I had put it in order before I went to bed, but it really wasn't in disorder. I clean up as I go. We had a very nice visit. I think I may be getting my shit together!! Thanks for all your help! I am going to recommend your channel to my daughter, because she likes to watch videos about getting her shit together, too.

    I have gotten back to working on my bedroom again. 10 minutes minimum working on it, 30 minutes rest. I set timers. My health makes it difficult to move around much. But I am doing it!!!

  • @lenavogelsang7864
    @lenavogelsang7864 7 лет назад +227

    a tip I learned from the flylady system when it comes to long days of decluttering... set a timer for 45 minutes of work. then take a 15 minute break for some act of self-care, like drinking some water or coffee, putting up your feet, a snack, whatever you need. then go back to 45 minutes of de-cluttering. these breaks make sure you can keep going for a long time.

    • @Elemiriel
      @Elemiriel 6 лет назад +11

      I bet you could vary that based on your health and emotional state too... For myself I'd do 1 3/4 hours working with 15 min breaks on big category days (clothes, books, etc) but closer to the 45/15 rule for paperwork (lots of effort for me) or sentimental things (which I have yet to go through)

      I've tried this for Pomodori. I put on a playlist for the time I wanted to declutter/clean up and when the last song comes up I take a break. It's been working well :)

    • @karenhill-seitz4866
      @karenhill-seitz4866 5 лет назад +11

      I can't work this way with a break. Once I stop...I'm done. So, for me, it's best to keep going for the amount of time Ive decided upon.

    • @1Lightdancer
      @1Lightdancer 5 лет назад +9

      Yes, I love setting a timer for 20 or more minutes, and then talking a little break. 20/10 is a good ratio for someone with physical or mental health challenges, and even doing "just a little" adds up!

    Extra Great Advice and Tips!!
    My mother always said, “Have a place for everything and put everything in its place.” She also said, “It’s easier to keep a house clean than it is to get it clean.”
    Throughout my adult life I have always “spring cleaned” my house twice a year. (Spring and Fall) I would declutter consistently, so I didn’t have to worry about being buried in stuff. Due to health issues, with family members and myself, I’ve not been able to keep my routine going for past five years. I feel like I am drowning in a sea of junk...lol
    I started “Kondoing” my house this week and already feel overwhelmed. I’m much older now and due to health issues, I cannot stand for long lengths of time. Your post has encouraged me to keep going, even if it is in small bits at a time. So glad to hear someone actually say take your time and rest in between. Three days and two go-away-bags later and my dresser and chest of drawers are complete! Yahoo!! (The drawers are ready for whatever hides in the closet, which is next on the list.)😁
    Thanks again for sharing all of this wonderful wisdom!
    God bless you!😊

    To keep from cluttering you home again, apply the KonMari method to buying. Does it really spark joy for you? If not put it back on the shelf and move on down the isle. :)

    • @MrAshtonone
      @MrAshtonone 5 лет назад +6

      Linda Farneth - I have began implementing a low/no-buy method last year before I head of the KonMari method. I was acquiring too much in the way of cosmetics and clothing and not getting rid of anything. I started to get frustrated with myself for having bags of excess I did not really need. Some things went back and some were kept. I started thinking in store, do I really want this? why? do I really need this? do I have something similar already in my wardrobe or cosmetics collection, handbag collection? Yes, put it back I don't need it. If I was replacing an item - ran out of foundation or my black go to handbag needed to be replaced and I found an ideal fit for me in all manners (do I love the style, is the size right, can I get into it easily, can I open it fully, is the price good for the quality and will it last a long time) then it is a yes. This low / no-buy has helped me a lot since I think ahead (does it really make me happy and do I really need it). :) Lynn

    I got stuck once on what category to start next. I finally decided to clear our every storage/cleaning closet and each cabinet under my sinks (kitchen and bathroom.) Here I had all of cleaning products and all of my backups (batteries, lightbulbs, etc.) Spreading everything out on my dining room table, I gathered like things together and began getting rid of the excess. When I was done, I stopped keeping cleaning products under sinks and designated one place to those items. One bin of bathroom cleaners, and one bin of household cleaners. Now when I clean a space, I grab the appropriate product or bin and take it with me to the room I am cleaning. How I ended up having 3 or 4 winder bottles is lost on me. Now I have one. This left my very limited bathroom storage free to house things that were cluttering up the counter tops. My kitchen sink cabinet only houses dishwasher detergent, multipurpose spray, and my husband’s degreasing hand wash (he is a mechanic.) I realized my linen closet and utility closet (lightbulbs, batteries, tools) should be swapped because the size and depth of each space served the other category better. As good as purging my clothes felt, I was very surprised how accomplished I felt going through this category full of things that none of which spark joy. Joy was sparked in the completion of a job well done. And as a chronically messy person, I find great joy in knowing where I can find anything and everything because everything has a home and proper place.

    One thing that has really helped me, esp for the 'things I may want to use someday' category, is the 20/20 rule. This was brilliant in going thru art supplies! Can I replace this item for under $20, and in under 20 mins? I didn't stick specifically to the numbers, but that idea really helped me weed out things I had no attachment to, and no plans of using in the next 6 months or so. If I do ever have a need for those items, they are easily and cheaply replaceable. And not using up my precious energy and space in the meantime.
    Another concept I've found useful is the idea of curating. Letting go of the idea that I have to have 'all the things'. Having only the special things feels so much better. I don't need every DVD, esp ones I have no interest in actually watching again. I'd rather only keep the ones I love and use often. It works great for sets of things too. You have a set of markers, but only use 6 of the colours... YOU DO NOT HAVE TO KEEP THEM ALL JUST BECAUSE THEY CAME IN A SET! Same goes for paints or dishes or glasses, etc.

      I've always felt a little guilty about holding onto things but this makes sense. I live "out" and there are many things i could not replace in under 2 hours and i certainly would not want to make that trip for something under $20, so i hold onto them.

      never heard of this rule: can it be replaced for under $20 and within 20 minutes. Brilliant option! I went through my makeup and got rid of eye shadows and lipsticks I'd be hanging onto because I occasionally wore the colours...thank you!

    Konmari method, even in the smallest bit of use, is effective the most for realizing we do deserve to be surrounded with nice things and all without any guilt that comes with objects which spark no joy, but much stronger feelings of guilt, selfdeprecation and dissapointment, unwanted responsibility and etc. After very painful summer of decluttering both physically and mentally, i feel so much better knowing that everything around me makes me happy and evokes happy memories making it so much easier to have a good life on day to day basis.
    Not sure if that makes sense, but its the sort of process where i do feel as if I've given myself a permission to let go. And just be happy :)

    Greatest advise !!!!
    I celebrated my one year anniversary in August completing the Kon Marie method.... I am soooo happy .
    - i did go through my things many more times getting rid of additional stuff .
    Many items I kept like shampoo or lotions . I just stop buying new stuff and I finally am at the end of using up items .
    - my room is never more then 10 minutes to clean
    - everyday I took stuff to goodwill daily as it’s only a few miles away and it felt soooo good .
    - kept some items as so I can see if i will use it in the next season .
    - paper was the hardest for me
    It’s truly life changing and liberating and I feel sooo much better and don’t miss a thing .

    This is a wonderful video to keep me going on my life-long struggle with too much stuff! I just sorted a whole bunch of sewing supplies that I used as a costume maker (haven't done it for several years...no plans of ding it again. EVER!). I have a whole black bag full of perfectly good trim (some are vintage and worth money on Ebay). I was so proud to be getting rid of 99% of it! But then I got cold feet! What if my granddaughters want to make a craft? What if I decide to get back into costuming? I don't want to stick it in the attic though. I have 14 large bins of fabric in my basement that I need to go through and just GET RID of! When I finally do this, I know I will feel pangs of regret, but I hope I will feel more of a sense of relief than regret. It is like shedding myself of a former ME to make room for the NEW ME! A painter!

    I only have control of my own bedroom and started declutering a year ago. A couple days ago I realized that I have enough space for all my things, including those that have been posted for selling. I'm very happy about it. I decluter periodically still and I will recommend to others to consider that they will need time to give a new purpose to those things they are getting rid of: where to donate, where to take the recycling, where to post and sell. Otherwise, you will keep your clutter for too long.

My husband is one of those people that thinks he's very tidy and totally gets the Kon Marie method, but in the end is the messiest of all and his way of tidying is chucking all the chargers and cables in a big bag and stuffing it somewhere in a dark corner of the house! Hahaha! :p

    Hi, I just discovered your very helpful video. I've been wanting to declutter my stuff for a long time. I decided to start with my huge book collection which I don't have the space for. I just went through my books and got rid of 30-35 bags of books and I still have more to get rid of. I wouldn't want to throw them out as I believe someone else can benefit from them. That is why I contacted a local library who has two used book sales per year. I contacted the person in charge of this sale and asked if they have a volunteer with a car who could pick up my books as a donation to their sale which is coming up at the beginning of April. I don't have a car so it would be difficult for me to bring the books bag by bag via bus. To my delight a volunteer was available! He came by two days ago to take all my bags away. The rest of my books that I don't want I will be donating to another used book sale that the university I work for has once a year. A volunteer will be picking my books up in April. A little bit at a time!! Thank you!

    Definitely finding a home for items we want to keep because we will use them is so important! My next big declutter is in my formal dining room, which is behind closed doors and in drawers of my large buffet, and then my china cabinet. Most of the items in these places, I have not used in years, some items I was gifted and don’t like, and won’t ever use again. It’s all going. What I use is in a matching armoire that is becoming disorganized due to the amount of items that will be immensely easier to be seen after emptying the aforementioned furniture!!! It’s a beautiful dining room, and I will love it more after the decluttering and reorganizing. Thank you for the video!💕

    I keep a decluttering "journal" that I write in, as well as a checklist. When I feel sad that I didn't make enough progress to check something off the list, I get satisfaction from writing about all the things I did do that day to declutter. The same is true for when I make to-do lists. I add on the things I did and check them off.

    Hi, Laura.
    I felt very identified when you spoke of your non-Konmarie konvert husband. I started with the method after moving together, and it helped me to realize that my main problem, for which I can not finish organizing my office, is not related to being a disorderly person, but with several emotional obstacles of my own. Now, I am going through a stage of mourning, which is why the method is at times liberating and at times overwhelming. However, it allowed me to talk with my husband about what the disorder and the burden it makes me feel, and finally we will begin the last stage of organization together. I really felt very contained and inspired with your words. They were exactly what I needed at the exact moment. thank you very much for sharing your experience.

    My main problem seems to be that too many things bring my joy/happiness/contentment/whatever term you want to substitute...LOL
    And it isn't about not having the passion or interest in the craft/hobby/or what have you, but just that I'm not good at prioritizing my time, plus I am a recent widow, and coming off several years of being sole caretaker, and just not having any time I felt I could be out of earshot in my studio. Now, I'm kind of depressed, so I'm hoping to get back into my crafts/scrapbooking/photography, etc...in the hopes it will be therapeutic, so I'm not tossing any of that stuff yet.
    As to the sub-categories: great idea! I started with all the clothes in my closet; the drawers came later. Still working on another set of drawers. My office is my biggest bugaboo; and that's both a room and a category all rolled into one. It IS office space; the contents are all office-related, but it is a disorganized mess. My hubby used to say that if I took something to the office "for safekeeping," that it went into a black hole, never to be seen again. Sigh.
    Thumbs up on your ideas!

    And the losers in the same space as you who simply refuse to get onboard with the cleaning and clearing.... I can't get on with them. That crap they bring in on the daily yet never pick up... SMH. They need their own rat hole for their garbage and not one bit is to come into the conjoined areas.

    Hi! Great advice, great video! Went over to your blog post about Swedish death cleaning too but couldn't find any comment section so hope its ok I comment it here? I've heard it being mentioned before & one aspect of death cleaning I think many people forget is not just what would bring my loved ones joy, but also, what do I & do I not want them to see! My diaries for example. Are they interesting reflections or sources of family history? Or just emotional rantings that not even I want to read again, ever? So what am I ok or comfortable with others to read when I'm gone and what not. Also, if you want a special trinket to be passed on down the generations, perhaps you should declutter all useless trinkets/baubes so your valuable thing doesnt get confused with & thrown aeay with the trinkets.

      I imagine it would take too much time for most folks, but on the diary front - maybe scan them and just keep digital copies. You’ll still be able to go back and read them, but it’s unlikely any family member will pore through your digital files after you’re gone, especially if you keep them in a password-protected place. Of course, you’d need to remember the password if you ever want to read through them again! Also, it does open up the possibility of hackers getting to the info, so if you plan on running for public office, maybe don’t try my idea.

So I end up having shoes in the hallway and in a shoe drawer; books in more than one library, glassware in more than one cupboard and in different rooms. Love this video. My husband and I have been working the Konmari method for two weeks. He has a hard time with joy vs I have to have it, eg socks, underwear, etc. He has no attachment to them other than them being a necessity. So he worries on his side that he isn't doing it right. I told him that he should just keep what he needed and if the elastic was worn out in socks that that was a clear way of knowing he could let go. I was worried he was going to get rid of all his socks lol
    In the end, and we've been working clothes for two weeks now we are almost finished with our closet. We needed a better seasonal storage system for out of season clothing.
    One thing I worry about is bulk buying. We buy certain toiletries in bulk to save money but also we have three bathrooms to stock. So I'm not sure if Konmari can cover these things like toothpaste, extra toothbrushes, soaps, etc. Right now I use a messy spare closet but I'd like to figure this out if you or anyone else has advice on this situation. I feel like buying in bulk, might not go with konmari but I have too or I'm going to the store too often to buy the same things over and over.

    I agree with doing a "KonMari Prep" to free up sorting space, as well as make the easier decisions. I did separate shared items into bins so that other family members could still decide (after I didn't want it)--the decision is then the family members' with less conflict.

    I love the concept of the KonMari method but I work full time outside the home and I know I don't want to spend my weekends doing each category or pulling out too much that I can't get done before bedtime... combining a little Flylady and Marie Kondo - I use Flylady's- declutter 15m per day in the "zone" you are working on. I use an empty rubber maid bin. I go into the zone I am working in that week and I pick a cabinet, drawer, flat surface (what ever I decide on for that day) and I empty the chosen space into the bin. I usually go sit in front of the tv while I go through each thing. I use Marie's advice - "does it bring me joy" or if it's a hard decision for me I ask myself 2 questions: 1. "Can I find a useful purpose for this item that I can start implementing today" or 2. " if I knew something horrible was going to happen to all my belongings and someone told me I had 30 minutes to get anything out of my house I didn't want destroyed - would I choose this item?" Those 2 questions put the item into prospective for me and helps with the final decision.
    I am not trying to promote another method on your channel but Flylady is a great source after you have decluttered to come up with routines and plans to keep your space tidy.
    Thanks for the content. Great information!

    A tip from my personal experience: never declutter while hungry. If it is a long decluttering project, eat a full meal beforehand and follow the advice to have snacks prepared. Studies show that shoppers buy more of everything (not just food) while hungry, and you will not want to part with possessions when your fuel tank is empty.

    I did fashion school over 15 years ago, and although I didn't end up working in fashion I do have a historical/vintage/alternative fashion hobby and a lot of clothes as a result.
    Because I have so many clothes every piece has to earn its presence in my closets (yes, plural).
    If I encounter something that I still like and fits me well but haven't worn in a long time I challenge myself to build a few outfits (by combining it with other existing pieces) with that piece in it and to actually wear those outfits within a certain time frame.
    If I can't build the outfits because I don't have enough stuff that goes well with it, then I ask myself if this piece is worth it to make/buy things to match.
    This also works as a reminder not to buy/make things I have no matching things for. I either buy/make something I have no matching things for along side with other stuff that does match it. For example when making a new main piece (dress/skirt) I make a matching accessory at the same time.
    If I can build the outfit without making/buying new things, and I don't end up wearing it anyway, then I start asking myself why I didn't wear it.
    My mainstream fashion items are not precious to me at all and I also haven't spent much money on them either (thrift or hand-me-downs) so they are really easy for me to deal with when that closet needs decluttering.
    If there's a hole it goes into the textile recycling.
    If I haven't worn it in a year but it's still in a good condition it goes to the charity/thrift shop.
    I have become very picky with what I keep when I receive hand-me-downs.
    Sometimes I just know I won't be wearing it because of the texture of the fabric. My mother always questions me "but it looks like a decent shirt, better than some of the things you have" but I've learned that when I cave into that pressure I still don't end up wearing it.
    The only "someday" mainstream items I keep are bras and bathing suits because they are expensive and I wouldn't buy them second hand. I do accept them as hand-me-downs though.
    If I lose weight I just thrift new clothes, so I don't have a stash of "someday" main pieces.

    My biggest obstacle is my husband who seems to think that because his parents had to keep everything because of the economic issues that were going on during their years of parenthood that means he has to keep everything. Our garage is so jam packed of stuff thrown everywhere because he has nowhere to put the items that he keeps collecting because "he might need it in the future". We are busting at the seems and no matter how much of MY STUFF I get rid of it doesn't make a dent because he wants to keep every article of clothing, every piece of wood, every screw, every bolt, every non-working power tool that my grandfather had squirreled away in his tool shed, all his books from college he never reads. I've gotten to the point where I am beginning to hate walking through my door because no matter how much stuff I purge it doesn't make a difference, how should I approach this situation? You think you could do a video on this?! How to work through obstacles when someone doesn't want to admit they have a hoarding problem......lol

    Give yourself permission to work outside of, or ignore, certain categories. For example, I'm a total bibliophile. I have a lot of books. I have a guideline - I have a To Be Read shelves and Keep shelves. To go from TBR to Keep I ask myself after I read it, "will I re-read this?" If the answer is yes, it gets Kept. But I have a lot more Kept books than Marie Kondo suggests. I'm okay with that because they give me joy to look at.

    Don’t buy anything that you not really need. That is the reason we have so much stuff. I am one of them and trying very hard to not buy .
    So don’t look for things that are nice etc. it is very tempting to push the button for buying.
    And more important the resources of the earth can’t handle what we are consuming. It is now we have to come in action otherwise it is to late.
    Thank you, bye Mirjam

    I like the konmari method for folding clothes I fitted heaps into an 88 litre storage container if you view my most recent video from my channel you will see just how much stuff I still have to sort out

    Like you, I did my first round in Sept-Nov 2014, and I arranged donation pickups as the items started piling up. In the U.S., we have the Vietnam Vets Organization, and they will pick up donation items. You have to arrange for donation and pickup of larger items, but it makes it so easy to get the stuff out of the house.

      It's definitely worth doing if someone nearby will collect. Sadly, it's not really a big thing in Ireland.
