Yayue literally means Elegant music in Chinese. It was done for Confucian ceremonies. Today, it's only played in Taiwan, at a certain Confucian Temple.
This is proper Yayue not like the one performing in Qufu unfortunately. But maybe Qufu temple will redescover the authentical tradition from Taiwan ROC 😉
I think there are at least two Confucian temples in Taiwan that perform the yayue music, dance, and ritual: in Tainan and Taipei. In South Korea, too, there are two types of Confucian ritual that are still done each year.
***** Someone told me the story of interviewing some old Munmyo Jeryeak musicians in South Korea, and asking them about the rising tones in the music. The musician said something like, "Oh, that's something we decided to try a few decades ago to make the music more interesting"--and the musicians after that time continued doing it. This implies that before sometime in the mid-20th century the music didn't have these rising tones. But I don't know how true the story is.
@@user-ic9fk1fy6i If there are videos of yayue (Confucian ritual music) from many other parts of Taiwan than Taipei and Tainan, please share the links to some of those videos.
@@yug4836 Really????? LMAO Taipei confucious temple was built in 1925 while Korea's Jongmyo Shirine was built in 1395. Wait can you tell me the definition of the Tradition?
The nationalist government fled China and and brought the ritual over to Taiwan. Some descendants of Confucius also fled together with them. Confucius's tomb is in Qufu, China. There are more than 100,000 graves of his descendants too. All that predates 1395.
its hard to tell which time period due to it being a general confucian ritual, but looking at the clothes they might be reminiscent of the warring states period - Han dynasty

Fabrice DV The music is very good, but the costumes can be improved.
Every culture, tradition, religion has its own rituals

@@user-ic9fk1fy6i Also, I'm not even sure I've seen a video of yayue from Tainan. Almost all of them were filmed at the Confucius Temple in Taipei.

I think this video may have been recorded at the Taipei Confucius Temple (臺北孔子廟) in Taipei, Taiwan.

+dbadagna It has. It's the only place where the tradition is still continued.
