Loved your drive across the Nullarbor to Caiguna and the bush camp.. We know it so well. I camped all over that country while working with the Geological Survey Western Australia in 1965 and on many family trips from then on into the 2000s…. Thanks for the memories…

I kinda like the fact that your drone wouldn't work, you're there in a simple, none digital age car, a car from a nicer time, before we had Mobile phone apps and all the crap that actually stops people getting off their arses and having great adventures . 👍

It baffles me that people call 50 year old cars that still work (with some attention) unreliable while carrying around technology that's designed to fail within a few years so you have to buy a new one. The main difference being that you can fix the Rover yourself, but not things like an iPhone.

I love this series, i owned before my own RRC with 3.9Efi and i adore it. Now i drove 200tdi Discovery 1, but still miss that noble V8 ramble 🤠
I have a 1976 Chevy blazer it has the same colors as your Range Rover inside and out seats and such. These must have been popular colors are that time.
The Range Rover looks real good.
Still the best looking 4 wheel drive ever .
I think had you opened the builders plate at any time before you'd driven as far as you had, you'd have felt greater nostalgia, but a few days on the road and you're bonded with the Rover.

There’s nothing quite like traveling long distance in a nice comfortable V8
In mho it could be better in a Toyota LC200 V8.
@Nathan Marais They will do 160km/h. But for long distance you’ll want to put some sound insulation in. I have a later one of these and it’s a wonderful place to travel in.
@Nathan Marais Well obviously you won’t go that fast but the point was you can drive faster than 90km/h. This one is so loud as it is lacking in sound insulation. Of course a Toyota that is 10 years newer will be more refined. It’s not a fair comparison.
@Nathan Marais You are comparing vehicles that came out a decade apart. It's like comparing a 2020 VW Polo to a 2010 Peugeot 207. Of course the newer one will be an improvement. You can take a Range Rover overlanding, much like Andrew did for many years.
@Nathan Marais You can’t say it is the most unreliable brand in the world as it varies between countries and surveys. What other manufacturer has 70% of their vehicles ever produced still being used? None. Even if they need a bit more work in the long run, I would rather put the work in and drive a more capable vehicle.

Andrew, As a petrol head from South Africa I love your video's on the Range Rover. You indicated that the V8 "noise" is driving you up the wall but I am so grateful for you letting some of it slip through in the background. I love the way the motor rev's up and the drivetrain wind as you accelerates. Music to me. Thank you for share the experience and the lovely Auz country. Love the place.
Yeah, it does sound quite good in this one. There's a nice gear-change. I'm saying nothing but I let the shot run. The V8 is sweeeeet.

Ive had my 1983 for 21 years and its never let me down . Replaced lots of things on it but its never left me stranded anywhere . Ive had my 86 model for 7 years and done a Holden efi 5.0ltr v8 in it . They may not be luxurious but they go anywhere .

Very envious of your trip Andrew, awesome vehicle and scenery. Can’t wait to get my 1980 2 door Range Rover out of storage back on the road and able to go touring again here in NZ. A few episodes back you mentioned possible updates to make it more of a daily driver. If you didn’t know it but the early Australian assembled Range Rovers (1980ish) did come factory optioned with both aircon and automatic trans. Mine is Aussie assembled and it has factory aircon and was an automatic, thank god someone saw the light in the past and converted it from the 3 speed torqueflight to a 4 speed manual.
So a ZF auto transplant from an early Disco mightn’t be frowned upon by purists if it looked factory.
Keep doing fantastic things and we’ll be watching from Great Barrier Island NZ

I heard you say it was Latin, not Australian. Maybe you could have replied yes, that you stuffed up the separation of the two Latin words, null, and arbor. It’s nothing to do with the Australian accent.

Hello, I really like your videos, I too had a green Range Rover V8 like yours and I very much regret not having it anymore, it is an endearing car,
I have traveled with it through the Europe with my wife and my children, I have fond memories of it and I miss the sound of the V8.
Today I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee but it's not the same. My dream would be to find a Range Rover like yours, which I find magnificent,
at 10:20 MN this moment is very beautiful with the nameplate and your range Rover which is masterful at 11:28 MN it's superb, well done!

Hey Andrew, first of all welcome back to Range Rover ownership! I watched your earlier video where you contemplated restoring/resto modding. I personally own automatic 3.9 and I agree that this particular drive train suits the vehicle very well (4.2 or 4.6 even better). But there is something about that bootleg shifter :-). I would propose tasteful upgrade instead of restomod. Upgrade transmission to LT77 5-speed, rebuild the engine with hi-torque cam and upgrade it to modern ignition and fuel injection - 3.5 will make 125kW easy. And you got stylish daily usable classic with all the character retained. As a bonus you can keep carbs in a box to make purists happy.

Really interesting series thank you Andrew and been obsessed with your channel since stumbling across it. . Covid notwithstanding in a few weeks taking our 90 series petrol Prado with no service history and 425,000 kms on the clock from Melbourne to Darwin, hiking near Darwin and then across the top to Cairns before camping on an island for a week or so then driving back to Melbourne via the Flinders Ranges and Arkaroola . Fossicking along the way so an 8-10 week trip is the plan. Your series has both educated me and terrified me in the number of things that can go wrong but we have to have a go. Lower ball joint replacement next week and safety check. Hope she can make it. Looking forward to the next episode.
If you don't have a lot of experience travelling remote there are videos on what to carry in regards to safety items and how to use them.
It may even be worth considering how you would manage if you were stuck somewhere for a week or more and what you would do.
A family member blew up his vehicle on a short trip recently and we had just done the border track a few months earlier. He was also talking about doing Googs track so it would have been a major issue if it had happened then.

I was about to say to get the front lower ball joints replaced with OEM only (never 555 as it can hold about 32K Km's). IF it an automatic, get the radiator replaced. 5VZFE engine is very reliable. I have a 97 4runner and same everything except the body. If you can find an extra coil pack, keep one. I still have factory coil packs and I am at 220 K miles (332K Km's). Engine is non-interference so just inspect the timing belt by moving the T-belt cover, by removing few 10 mm bolts.
A full mechanical check from a reputable person knowing about your trip is cheaper than a tow truck etc.
@@janpur1417 thanks mate. Replaced the radiator and all hoses 18 months ago. The mechanic knows of our trip. What spares should we take? We are taking 2 spare tyres
@@oldbloke204 thanks mate. We will have 50 litres of water at any given time outside of towns and have power with a thunder box and solar. The main thing I’m worried about is catastrophic engine failure. I don’t know how long since the timing belt been changed either.

After seeing the 13th episode, tell Guyn that you will restore the Range to its former glory with one improvement. The 5 speed gearbox. Of course, you will lose the smell, but it will a better car, a Range Rover suffix A+ by ASW.

Perhaps this was mentioned before, but how did the RR hunter obtain the build plate if the car was scrapped - is it a requirement for the scrap yards there to keep the plates of cars they destroy? I imagine there would be photos if he found the remains of the car and took it off himself. Lovely memento to have, regardless. 👍🏻
Ugh, sleeping in the car has to be one of my least favourite things to do when travelling. Had to do it a few times on long haul drives but I hate it more and more each time I have had to do it.
I couldn't help but imagine a john cleese moment where the builder plate gets taken in the wind and fall off the cliff 😂😂😂

If you've seen inside a Discovery 3's electronic handbrake actuator (or any of them) you'd trust an old handbrake more!
Its brake on drum that connect rear driveshaft with transfercase bassicaly best in case of reliability design..

if it's anything like a series there's nothing wrong the headlights, it's the crappy stalk switch (and the cable run back and forth). If you stick a relay in and decent sized cable they work fine.
1st rule of overlanding. Don't drive at night.
RR has gone with the modern flying pear shape now, but I think they could have chopped the roof and lowered the seats for a modern retro like Chevy Camaro.
The V8 sounds pretty nice.
To create the positive pressure, couldn't the quarter windows on the front doors be opened?

Why don’t you use it like Roothy does with his land cruiser Milo? Off-road?
I used to have an Aussie guy working for me about 20 years ago who told me there were checkpoints at each end of the Plain to make sure your vehicle was okay to make the trip across before you were allowed to set off. Extra fuel, good spare tire and water on board to reduce the likelihood of you needing rescuing. He made it seem a daunting trip across the wilderness. Was this ever a thing or was he exaggerating for a more interesting story…?
So that was how it was some time ago rather than how it still is? It didn’t look like Andrew went through any of that. I can imagine it as a daunting dirt road across the wilderness MANY years ago but it was told to me as though it was still this way in the late 90s. Even now it seems a large open distance which would still be worrying for an old vehicle to make it. Looks like there is a fair amount of traffic on it nowadays, though.

Andrew, I commented on the last video that i had seen a "green" range rover in Cape Town 2 weeks ago as you have shown in this video . But as you say yours was scrapped, so i don't think it was yours, was it? :)

What a story Andrew.. Have a lhd Classic in the family... Wonder how easy it is to convert to RHD....
Very easy. It was built to be made in LHD and RHD.
You need a RHD dashboard, and a few minor parts changes (pitman arm, steering linkage), but it's remarkably simple by modern standards. The genius of Charles Spencer King made these cars great.
I don't feel the "love" like when you had with the troopy.
