In this video, we explore a massive copper mine that produced over 200,000 tons of ore through its life. I have struggled to find much information on this site, but the mine appears to have been worked up until the 1910s before being abandoned. It is unclear if the mine was intermittently worked after this time or not.
In many parts of the video, you will notice the magnificent blue colors of the copper ore present in this mine. You will also see some of the massive open stopes where much of the ore was removed. Unfortunately, due to the easy access of this site, very few artifacts remain. This is becoming all too common in the desert mines that used to be so well preserved. You will also notice other obvious signs of frequent visitation such as graffiti and modern trash.
This is another site that would be worth revisiting with rope gear. There are a number of leads in this mine and at the surrounding mines.

Hi, what an interesting mine, so many different ways to go, there was still a bunch of copper minerals left too, very pretty.
Did you see the rat that ran right out in front of you at 28:29 ????

Epic F bomb at 23:43. CC handled it quite well, by skipping the dirty word entirely. Whoever that dude is, he doesn't seem to enjoy mine exploration at all! 😵‍💫

If there's a blackdamp warning you might want to carry an air tester. If it's methane or CO2 ( or simply low O2) you might not smell it. OTOH if there's steady air flow, no prob with Bob!
I only hit gas once, in the New Idria mercury mine, which was known to have pockets of methane. But that was long ago and far far away....
Looks like a fun one - but where's the malachite??

Yep I always carry a four-gas air monitor which is why I was unphased by the graffiti. There was no bad air according to my monitor. You’re a brave man to enter the New Idria Mine!

I hope monitors have come a ways since the crap ones they gave us in the early 2000's. I swear to God they gave em too us so we would work and not worry. Steam and SO2 leaking out of the ribs. One time it was so bad that even my pos gas detector was going off, I was in a man basket and was told I wasn't being brought back down until the job was done. Good times down deep in ne Nevada.

Definition of Black Damp: Blackdamp is an asphyxiant, reducing the available oxygen content of air to a level incapable of sustaining human or animal life. It is not a single gas but a mixture of unbreathable gases left after oxygen is removed from the air and typically consists of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapor. But can also contain Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S a.k.a. Stink Damp), Carbon Monoxide (which was known as White Damp). Suggest reading Wikipedia for a better understanding. Source is Wikipedia.

blackdamp means low oxygen, the coal absorbs it
