Indeterminate tomatoes or pole tomatoes as they are also called, grow with no upper growth limit, they can vine and stretch and produce many fruit.
Determinate or bush tomatoes grow to a specific height and will produce a limited amount of fruit, great for smaller spaces.

Nice video. Bonnie Best is a great tomato. Spoon tomato would be good to grow in a chicken pen/run so they can nibble when they want. Amish Paste, I prefer San Marzano because S.M. don't dry out and crack on the top like A.P; they are a cleaner paste tomato with perfect clusters. Early girl tomato is a small baseball sized mater that is amazing and HIGHLY productive. The Blue Berry Cherry is also a eye catching crack resistant semi disease resistant high producing amazing tasting cherry mater, been growing these for years and still will. My elderly 2 cents. Thank you.

I usually do 30-40 varieties a year, last year i got a new favorite. I let my 2 year old daughter circle a tomato out the catalog. It was Granny Cantrell, i grew 2 plants each had no disease and produced 10-12 nearly flawless 1lb pink tomatoes. Flavor is fantastic, smooth, balanced, juicy, similar to Brandywine but better in my opinion

Hi Leigh - that was a thorough tomato review! Taking notes, as always 📝 ! I tried some store bought plants from my local nursery last year, planted in the Greenstalks. They grew, and produced fruit, but I considered it a failure. I used the Greenstalk trellises, but the plants got so big that they went to the adjoining Greenstalk trellis. Basically, I couldn’t move the Greenstalks because they were locked into one another. My adventure in tomatoes will have to wait until the 2025 growing season when I know I’m home all summer. So yup, note taking! And trellis planning too because I like those bigger varieties for sandwiches and salads. I will do a couple of plants in better locations this summer, but not more than five, and probably of a dwarf variety.
Lol - I love hearing the 🦜 boys in the background! I swear they’re saying “Mom! Mom! MOM!!!” It completely reminds me of when my son was five, and he would yell to get my attention.
And finally note, I bought some store tomatoes earlier this week and they were sooo unpalatable - just dry and bland. I can’t wait for summer!

@@ourbackyardgarden I was thinking of you this morning when I did a check of our house! I hope you didn’t have another incident with the window wells. That line of rain that came in between 10pm (NJ) and 12am (Long Island) was intense and had me very worried! I keep going from window to window upstairs and trying to see the front and backyard. How did your backyard do? And your home? Did you get any rest?
We fared okay, but there was some dampness in the basement along our south facing side, and that is a first in this house. I’m stumped as to how to handle it other than run the dehumidifier. I think the rain just ran down the exterior wall, then got into the channel of the basement windows, and then did what water does with casement windows…moved under the pieces and down my interior cement walls. My husband worked in the window industry, so he might know of a solution to fix that without compromising egress. One of my outdoor umbrellas toppled over onto a patio chair - no damage that I can see. I drained the water out of the umbrella top this morning, but put it back on the ground because the wind is still whipping around here. I should move it into the garage later. My little canopy over our bbq also shifted a bit; I just shoved it back in place. lol, it cost me $80, fair to say it’s not one of those things that lasts forever.
The greenhouse was fine. I still have the screens in, and I always anticipated getting rain or moisture inside it which is why I spent two months prepping (sand, stain, seal) the wood last year. The gravel base, along with the wood shower flooring did their job - water flowed through as it was designed. The removable polycarbonate roofing tiles all stayed in place along with the weather stripping…and I was very pleased! The little cages holding the butterfly chrysalises didn’t budge and remained dry.
I guess there wasn’t too much damage locally - usually it’s a cacophony of chain saws after a bad wind storm. It’s quiet out there. And my daughter said she didn’t see much damage as she drove to work this morning. I hope your area avoided any tree damage.

Nice video! South Dakota I'm sure has different growing conditions, so not sure my experiences would apply. I've grown both the Pink Oxheart and the Hungarian Heart. Last year I decided it was absolutely absurd that I had purchased so many varieties of tomato seeds over the years before. So, we grew 152 tomato plants averaging 2 plants per type. Hands down, the Thornburn's Terra-Cotta was the most delicious fresh. We decided that we want the following varieties each year:: Thornburn's Terra-Cotts, Cherokee Carbon, Black Beauty, Orange Strawberry, German Strawberry oxheart, Orange oxheart, Jersey Devil and Sungold Cherry. I look at this post and can hardly believe we performed that experiment. And worse, this year we decided to do the same thing with peppers. We've already started seeds in trays. The peppers we are growing are to make our own sauces, salsas, chili spice and meat rubs. I want to streamline our garden and purchases. 2022 we performed the same test with green beans. We always have Blue Lake Pole Beans on even years. Oh we preserve and alternate garden space by concentrating our efforts on specific plants every other year. Once we pare down what we prefer to grow, we can grow each vegetable/fruit every year.

I'm also doing more pepper's this year. But wow I had 104 I think 20 varieties I can't imagine 152! Well maybe I can I take that back 😆 🤣 What state are you in? For me, it's mortgage lifter and dr wychie yellow. Jersey devil was amazing I'm growing 8 plants of that this year.

Happy New Year! I enjoyed seeing all of the tomato varieties you’re trying this coming season. My garden size and time dictate what I grow. I Garden every other day, early in the morning before it gets hot. I’ve narrowed it down to 7 plants, single stem on pretty black obelisks in a 3x21 foot row. Garlic grows behind the tomatoes, strawberries in front and peppers in between. I do 5 San Marzano for canning, 1 Marmande for slicing, 1 grape D’Inverno for sun dried and 2 hanging baskets of golf ball sized Tumbling Tom for salads. All heirloom so I can save seed. This seems to be the right amount for me to manage without overworking and getting exhausted. Our garden got a lot smaller last year and it was way more enjoyable. I process the harvest every other day as needed when I’m not in the garden. 2 to 4 hours is my limit. 😊

Great review and comparison review also!
We just opened I think the last of 2022 canned tomatoes and I have to say the aroma that came from those jars way out did any of the 25 varieties I did in 23. I will have to look back, but I know there was Opalka and Federle for paste.
I did receive the spoon tomato also this year and will give it a go. All cherry tomatoes volunteer readily and are easy to hoe. I should have put a tarp under the cherries last year as I didn’t clean up all of them in the fall😅 I will think of them as a crop cover 😅.
The black tomatoes I didn’t care for. My mind likes vegetables to be the color they are known to be, however I will try the black pineapple (ananas noire) which is actually multicolored only because a tomato taste tester that seemed to know his tomatoes chose that as his favorite overall. I haven’t had luck by using this method in the past, but will give it one more try. Tomato taste, texture and productivity are important for me and I feel I’m in a race to get the right OP one to save seed from. As you mentioned even the Whopper (hybrid?) has changed. I think we are losing the true tomato flavor. I read low acidity makes a poor keeper. A late season Sun Gold to me had the taste and texture of a grape 🍇 😮.
I had huge tomatoes in 23, Mtg Lifter, Abe, Amish Gold, Amish Paste (Jung Seed), but think I was most disappointed in Brads Atomic Grape and Mamie Browns Pink. Brads was of course over saturated colored picture drew me to grow that and it was awful. Did the A Grappoli also and it was a much smaller plant and had decent 1-2” tomatoes and not a huge producer. I prefer true cherry tomatoes or large tomatoes. Grape shaped tomatoes did very well and don’t crack. Jung’s Sweetheart tomatoes had a nice pop of a crunch and flavor and were under an inch, no splitting-I liked them others may think the skin too tuff.
Yes, don’t like the shipping, but I did order Parks Beef Master Hybrid. It will be a real test for me. I thought I was being smart and order them off Amazon and think I still paid for shipping as some companies do on Amazon.🙄. I won’t be able to save the seed, but will know if the flavor I’m looking for still exists.
I have some other tomatoes that are in the stash including the Kellogg’s Breakfast. One other thing I do remember in 22 was Brandywine Pink. They come in Red and Yellow now-see what I mean how things change?
It’s still a ways off for me to start seeds. I’m starting later this year on some plants that grow very fast as it doesn’t pay here with late frost and I’m so over running around covering everything. Animals, plants, houseplants need to be tuff to live here😂😂. They need to stand up and take care of themselves a bit 😂😂. Why should I do all the work? Been doing that my whole life and it never proved anything so I’m retiring-literally.
Ok! Found my binder for 22. I grew many Burpee Hybrids-Super Sauce, Bodacious, Steak Sandwich and loved all of them and have decided to grow again. They were all Huge. I don’t remember not liking any of the flavors. I didn’t care for San Marzanos, but did like Opalka (Seed Savers). Didn’t like Burpee Early Treat, too watery and wasn’t very early.
Thanks for forcing me to get 22 binder out. I almost forgot some of this info. I’m sure those canned tomatoes were some burpee slicers and I know I had Opalka and Super Sauce. So with any luck I can recreate that wonderful aroma in a jar again.
So maybe I need to rethink my seed saving strategy. Can I trust these wonderful hybrids to still be available for as long as I need them and hope the price is still affordable and not stress over saving seed? Probably. And we eat less so I won’t need as many. If it means having great taste, less waste, better disease resistance and above all - less work - I think I’m in. After growing 25 varieties of heirlooms in 23 and not really liking many I think I just found my answer.
😂😂thanks for the think tank discussion Leigh!
