    On "My Car Story" we're in the Western Suburbs of Chicago IL on 12-13-21.
    We're looking at a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad in Matador Red Paint. The car comes with the factory 283 CI V8 engine, and an automatic transmission.
    The car's Owner is John. John’s had this car since 2019. He shares he needed this car to complete his lineup of 1957 Chevrolets. As you can see, this one looks like it came from the Dealership Showroom.
    ENJOY!

    The last of the Tri-Five shoeboxes. This example is extremely rare, and the last year of the 2 door Nomad. From 1958 on, the Nomad was a 4 door car. Instead, the Brookwood was the 2 door wagon. This Nomad is drop dead gorgeous, and in mint condition! Wow!

    Lou, this Nomad is just unbelievable. Perhaps the finest survivor? That 283 sounded soooo sweet! Imho the lines and flow of the Nomad are even superior to the two door Sedan - timeless as Pegasus. Fabulous feature! Can't wait to share this with some buddies!

    Hey Lou! This is my favourite 1957 vehicle. (Period) what a year 57 was for American automobiles! If I had to choose a single car from that famous year, this would be it! (and I’m mainly a Mopar guy!)
    Sooo beautiful!

    Car is drop dead Gorgeous.
    Said it before, i'll say it agiain, cars from this era were rolling works of art.
    Sweet it's got the Power Pack 283.
    In '66, my Dad bought a '64 Malibu station wagon, 283 and a 3 speed. Car was like new but after a couple of years he started having problems with the engine.
    A friend set him up and installed a 283 from a wrecked '67 Camaro,,,you guessed it, a Power Pack type.
    He loved this and would mention it anytime he could.
    After trips from the bay area to Auburn, Sacramento, Reno and Oregon, he estimated he'd put nearly 300 k on it when he finally let it go in the late 80's. Age and crappy gas ('I gotta keep retarding the timing !'). Still ran and was never apart. Great car.
    Could be wrong but i believe the heads were Fuelie, 202.
    '57, same year as me :)

    A gorgeous example of a true classic. I appreciate that the side metal accents line up perfectly between the door and fenders - a rare occurrence . . . and the license plates are colour-coordinated! My one question is why the black circles on the back lights? They take away from the original design.

    This is probably the "Holy Grail" of the 1957 model. The Nomad was such a cool design, I guess you could argue that the Nomad was one of the first "crossovers" being that it wasn't a sedan and it wasn't a truck and it wasn't the typical station wagon. This car is iconic for sure and looks fabulous in red!!! Cars used to have such style!!!

    What a beauty! I'm an admirer of late 50's wagons because they're lean in the rear with the sloped back glass and tailgate. By the late 60's, wagons became very boxy in the rear for more cargo space.

    Hey LOU, you ol' "PAISANO BAMBOOZLER" YOU! The Chevy NOMAD used to be a "heartthrob" of mine back in its day (I was 17 when this '57 came out - I'm 82 now!)! Nothing beats a "hot red" for that "gorgeous wet look"!! Really really love the OUTSTANDING VISION on these Nomads! Those 7 vertical SS ribs on the tailgate were real "turn ons" for me too! The whitewalls really help bring out the beauty of the red, or any color for that matter! And BIG JOHN - where do you get all your "moola"? Remember, "I left my MOOLA in ASHTABULA"?! Wonderful "vintage memories" for this ol' dude (not DUD now!)! "Ach du lieber, mein schatz"!!! "Gesundheit" & Horace Heidt too!!! Remember his "big band music" many decades ago??? "GOOT SCHTOOFF"!

    Hi, Lou! I think you knew I was going to enjoy this episode! There is a great interest in station wagons in the classic car hobby now, but it took a long time for that to happen, I would say probably not until the Nineties. Before then, I think the 1955-1957 Chevy Bel Air Nomad and Pontiac Star Chief Custom Safari may have been the only ones that seemed to generate any interest in wagons, other than woodies. The unique styling is a definite factor in this wagon being an instant friendmaker, and perhaps no collection of Tri-Five Chevys would be complete without one. As John says, this was a great find for sure...and a keeper!
    Lou, thanks you and John for taking us along on this Nomadic journey! BTW, I hope you can find more wagons to spotlight, whether they be Nomads or more conventional ones like a Ford Country Squire, and if you do, be sure to say "tailgate and treats"!

    The Chevrolet designers did a superb job finishing out the Tri-Fives with this model. It was the icing on the cake for 3 perfectly designed cars. Ford and Mopar may've had fresh modern designs, but these cars have a stance that blow them out of water. This car has a breathtaking resto. I'm so glad it doesn't have the bumper guards on it. For me that destroys the clean look of the front-end.

    Hey Lou! Merry Christmas to you, and yours. What a Beauty. When I was 12 years old (in 1974) I had the magazines and the photos of the Nomads and always loved the BelAir but seeing the NOMADS in the Magazines introduced me to my NEW Love. Especially the Black with Red interior. Every Collector has a tendency to over option all the options with the Spinner Caps. In my eyes (because there are so many like this) they are starting to look like Toys. I prefer the Simpler Full Wheel Discs and Some less popular color options as they had a Rainbow of colors to choose from. Every once in a while I am like DAMN, that is NICE! Still A great Car!

    Always enjoyable to see the shoe box style. My wife loves her turquoise and white 57 just a basic 210 but it does have the V8. Not much of a car guy as I ride my motorcycle all the time but I definitely can appreciate the mechanics and the older styles as in I definitely like older motorcycles. 🍺👍

    I had a blue 57 Nomad back in the 70s I bought from the original owner. It was stock and all original, but had some rust issues. Ultimately I sold it to a guy in Long Island and I don't know where it went from there. It was a 4 barrel carburetor with dual exhaust, but I don't know if it had the V in the heads. I wasn't aware of that at the time. It had Turbo-Glide, not the 2-speed Power Glide this one has. Reverse was by Park and the quadrant had G instead of L. It was like a Buick Dyna-Flow. It didn't shift. I also didn't know about the engine mounts and what's correct for 57, so I learned some things from this video. Like so many other cars I had, I'm sorry I didn't keep the Nomad.

    "The Gold V means it has the V8." That is the first time I've heard that. I'm guessing that all the Bel Airs had a V8 though. So, the 150s, 200s, Del Rays, and what nots all had a V6?

    • @loucostabile
      @loucostabile  2 года назад +1

      Hi Jed, For 1957 there were four standard engine options, a 235.5 cu in (3,859 cc) inline 6-cylinder producing 140 hp (104 kW), a 265 cu in (4,340 cc) V8 "Turbo-Fire" producing 162 hp (121 kW), and two 283 cu in (4,640 cc) V8s: a "Turbo-Fire" twin-barrel carburetor producing 185 hp (138 kW) and a "Super "Turbo-Fire" four-barrel carburetor developing 220 hp (164 kW).[6] To help mechanics distinguish the 265 cu in V8 engine from the red 1956 and 1955 265 cu in V8 engines and the orange 1957 283 cu in V8s, the early 1957 265 cu in V8 engines with manual transmissions were painted a bright yellow-green chartreuse. After November 1956, the 1957 265 cu in V8 engines were painted the same orange as the 1957 283 cu in V8s.
      Another optional engine was offered with two four barrel carburetors, the legendary "Duntov" cam and solid lifters. This engine produced 270 hp. 1957 was the first year that Chevrolet ever offered fuel injection as an option. A 283 cu in (4,640 cc) engine fitted with solid lifters, the "Duntov" cam and fuel injection was rated at 283 hp (211 kW) and cost $500.[7][8] This was the first time in history that a General Motors vehicle achieved 1-hp-per-cu-in in a production vehicle. Fuel injection continued as an option throughout the early 1960s. However, most mechanics of the time didn't have the experience to keep the units running properly. This prompted most buyers to opt for conventional carburetion.

    • @MrTrack412
      @MrTrack412 2 года назад

      @@loucostabile Of course, if a 1957 is still in action, most likely they've installed V8s. But I'll remember your remark and look for the V6 engines w/o the be V on the front hood!
