Hey Saj! Thank you so much for inspiring me to move forward with creating a video production business! I would love to watch a video on how to build a relationships for repeat clients. Or how to negotiate prices! Or how to get to bigger budgets! Currently, having trouble with letting emotions get caught up with business. I want to start increasing prices because its clear with the budgets I'm getting it is nowhere sustainable to build a business but I hate even the idea of sitting down and having that conversation with them. You're one of the first RUclipsrs that actually bring the no nonsense business side of filmmaking and that's really exciting. Much love from Nashville, TN!
Great perspective, figuring out what tasks to focus on and managing my time around that is what I struggled with for a long time and still do, but it's gotten better. I really had to be consistent and make the conscious decision to do what's difficult day after day. Just have to trust the process and built momentum over time.
New to your channel and the content looks great. Just wondering if you’ve ever covered business licenses and liability/business insurance? The stuff that you may or may not need in order to legally work. I know it’s not sexy but it’s important for small businesses.
Hey. Not in a detailed video yet. I mention it in some videos. I’m trying to figure out how to make a video around it that people will actually watch. I made a video called the video Gerald undone will never made and I cover some of it
What if I don’t want to go the production company route? At the end of the day, I still wanna be an artist and progress as a cinematographer, director, producer, writer, and in the future, get picked up for high-end commercials, music videos, TV series, Hollywood, etc. I don’t care for opening and running a production company, rather get picked up by one. What’s your take on that? Ps: your videos have been very helpful
hey I'll cover that in a different video. It's a bit of a different process that's all about mastering the skill you are focusing on and learning how to pitch yourself through your work. There is also the route of getting an agent and I worked with successful DPs that get jobs that way.
I did pursue the DP path for several years and still work as a commercial DP from time to time. So I think I can use some of my experience there for the video. I also seen the career of several directors and DP that worked with my in the past decade and some are pretty successful now without a production company.
idk if you have a lot of independent films in your area, I used to live in LA and would drive around looking for people shooting and would just turn in my resume and reel. It got me on a bunch of non union sets and I eventually got into grip and gaffing. That was a long time ago.
Yea ad buying requires a price increase in the service to make up for it. But I absolutely hate being on both end of a cold call, so I’ve never had success with it personally and don’t know anyone that has either.
Any chance of a video for an in-house shooter/editor looking to transition into freelance or production company. I have years of experience shooting and editing with an ad agency, but have no experience pitching, networking, managing financials, etc.
What are some of the niche routes to take, when I hear that I mostly think of commercial marketing content and wedding videos. Can you give me some insight on some other markets you would suggest getting involved in? Also do you ever sell your footage as stock video/photography?
I’ll make a video dedicated to niche, but I know production companies that focus on one of these: music video, sports, non profit sector, schools of all kind, app overviews, training content, internal corporate videos, fundraising videos, food commercials, travel and hospitality. There is so many niches out there for video. I have sold stock but never made significant money with it.
@@Filmmakingmentor I have so many criticisms of many of the niches you mentioned, but instead I will say that you are inspiring me to challenge my cynicism and negativity.

@@Filmmakingmentor thank you in adavance for considering making a video on this topic, despite your contents and personal career path is different.

Does running ads compare to cold calling in terms of effectiveness? Media buying can be very expensive depending on the platform

Yep I got one in the works. Going from employee to freelancer.

I don’t know exactly yet. But I will have a discount to the first 100 students durning the launch week.
Ok because if it is too much eg over 100 pound sterling I won’t be able to buy it
