So happy as a Canes fan. Literally almost started crying when I saw the Isles at 11. So many years of disappointment with nothing to look forward to. Svechnikov will actually make our forward group daunting. This team is finally almost complete

Man, Dahlin and Ristolainen as your top pair, Ryan O'Reilly and Jack Eichel as your two top centers... Hopefully they get a goalie or Lehner turns it around. After 2015 they deserved this pick too.

JLPr I wouldn't be surprised to see O'Reilly traded in the off season to be honest.
With that cap hit I think he is nearly impossible to move, but also Mittelstadt needs room to develop. Also Ullmark hasn't shown anything special anymore.

Edmonton have ruined to many first overall picks. McDavid I think is still good though.
The NHL should really stop selecting positioning based on the previous year. They should do a point system based on the last 3 years of each team. This way a good team that had only one bad year won't get a high pick and it will stop teams from tanking because they'll have to tank for more than one year before they eventually get a first overall pick.
- The NHL will do the draft order however they see fit. Granted, your idea might not be so bad( basing the draft order on each team's previous 3 years ). They did that for Sidney Crosby's draft year, well mainly because of the lockout that year so they went with a draft order based on the previous 3 seasons prior for each team.

I just look at this draft and think that there is no way Montreal should be as high as 3. They finished 14th, 4th, 13th in their conference the last 3 years, yet they have a 3rd overall pick this year. How can they have that without finishing bottom 3 recently?

I watched this on a TV at Keybank Center with a group of others. Many stayed back from the Bandits game. lost my voice screaming (I wasn’t the only one) and heard roars around the rink. I then hugged a person I didn’t know. lol

Alternate timeline, the draft coulda been entirely different based on a billion factors. If that happened no guarantees this draft goes to the same 3 teams.

If calgary wins any of those games, it could impact the players of the opposing teams resulting in those games also ending in different scores as a result the entire draft board could be different. Also Back to the future was off by a year with the cubs winning the world series, therefore I conclude something happened in the past that affected our future resulting in the cubs winning a year later than the future marty went to.
Oh well. I was a little sad that my Canucks didn't get it, but congratulations for Buffalo on their first overall pick.

No excuse not to. If they are in the lottery again they deserve the same level of hate with Oilers being in the lottery this year. If you can't build a playoff team with Eichel, Reinhart (2 2nds) and Dahlin (1st) and your multiple 8th then the team should just fold. (yeah that goes to the Oilers as well).

It's now 49 years, the entire history of the Canucks franchise that they have NEVER won a 1st overall draft pick. They even lost the coin flip in 1970 to Buffalo who got Gilbert Perrault first overall. Then the Oilers get FOUR 1st picks between 2010 and 2015.The only 1st pick they had they traded Bryan McCabe to get in order to swing the deal to acquire the 2nd & 3rd picks to get the Sedins. It will be a historic day when Vancouver finally wins the lottery...50 years?...60?
If any team wants that third pick, Bergevin is looking to trade for a couple of washed up 4th liner. But they must have "character" and the right "attitude".

They didn't trade the picks. They just lost the draft lotteries so they settled for Sam Reinhart and Jack Eichel at 2nd overall in those years.

Washington tends to get on the play-offs, so that's why they don't get top picks.

They actually did win it in 2004, though. They took Ovechkin with that pick. In 2006 and 2007, they were also in the lottery but they didn't win (they took Nicklas Backstrom 4th in 2006 and Karl Alzner 5th in 2007). Since then, they've been a playoff team so they haven't been in the draft lottery. (Everyone was in the 2005 lottery because there was no season that year).
