At the age of 67 you have a natural de-esser built in. I hardly can hear any difference 😂 But I'm sure that the better ears are appreciating this video. Dom, thanks a lot for your very, very useful hints around cubase❤
Some serious T-Shirt changes there :) The green one could have done with a touch more gain reduction ;) Like the purple though. Great vid. really useful explanation. didn't know that level of control in the stock plugin was available. will take another look. thx
Thank you so much! This was a real eye-opener. I thought that its side-chain worked the same as a typical compressor. So, yeah... I was using it incorrectly. BTW, I love these short, single issue videos.
Like. Love. and Like, again! I prefer the Cubase De-Esser over the others I've used, but I have been plagued by the over compressing of the range I needed the focus in. Until now, I've - incorrectly - assumed what the De-Esser's sidechain settings were intended for. Cannot thank you enough for the 'tutorial'/explanation of it's little hidden superpower - it's quite literally the foundation to a solution I've been puzzling for a while. Appreciate all the knowledge you share, and the possibilities you encourage others (in this instance; me) to nourish and grow.
Great video Dom to add to my list of your videos I use as reference when mixing. Thank you so much! But is it only me that’s thinking I’m hearing the lyrics wrong about what she shines like? 😳
Thanks for yet another great and informative video. However I have a slight hearing problem, I do not hear much over 9 kHz, and I still try to do mastering for some friends (not professionally at all). Are there some tricks to anyway generate a reasonable mix or master? Other than carefully watch the frequency plots.
Hey Dom, I’ve got a question I’ve been going back and forth between logic and Cubase. There’s 1 thing that Cubase doesn’t offer “I THINk” doesn’t offer and that’s to be able to have my quad cortex as the input and my output my scarlet interface. I can’t seem to find a work around online please help if there’s a way. 😢 So essentially have two interfaces in use with Cubase. Hope that makes sense man help!!!
This could be a process in Cubase. Have the process analyze the audio and create a few automation curves (different parameters working together) to tame the S-es using the Cubase de-esser. Perhaps an idea for a feature?
Thanks Dom. Great lesson. Do you ever use Cubase stock plugins? I often wonder if one can get the same result as you would if you used third party, with the downside of taking more time, of course. Any thoughts or words of wisdom?
Hi Dom, thanks for this video but I can't hear the difference, I don't know why. I have the impression that there have been no changes. Is DeEsser used to make the vocals clearer so they don't fade into the instrumental ? I use my speakers to mix my music. Is it better to use headphones like you do in this video to correct the mix with the DeEsser specifically ? ... Update to my comment. I just watched your other video talking about De Esser - deesssing and I think it is better to understand the difference of the correction. Specialy if you are using De Esser for the fist time.
Dear Dom could you please tell me what's the name of the music which you were playing on 3d bass video? I've checked out your spotify but didn't find it thanks
cubase 4 and nuendo 4 had a denoiser and not anymore that was the best plugin ever made that restoration pack was everything please tell them to return those plugin s
I can hear a slight difference, but I'm not particularly bothered by "normal" sibalence. Niether are most people I think. Only when it's excessive is when it becomes a problem for a mix. So even tho it's still good practice to do a bit of de-essing, I don't think the majority of people particularly care or can tell if a song is "de-essed"...*so long as it's not drastically poking out at them.
Hi, Dom! I have a question about mastering for you. I produced an instrumental track, and it's just drums, bass guitar, guitar, and solo guitar. I put a lot of work into the sound of every element. And I like it. And when I put only cubase limiter to enhance it I still like the sound, but there are some distortion pops up already around 12lufs integrated. but when I try to create a chain of different plug-ins, the sound of few notes are changing a little bit and sometimes it loses what I tried to find, but of course the enhancement is smoother and it's clean with the same loudness level. Is it possible that sometimes a maximizer is the only thing you need?
Is it me or can you also do this with a dynamic EQ? In a dynamic eq you can pinpoint frequencies and let it duck those when they will go over the threshold.
I always use a combination of de-Esser and dynamic EQ. However, the technique that I show here allows you to be very surgical- because you put those sibilants under the microscope. A normal dynamic EQ would eat up the snares, hi-hats etc because there is no way to pinpoint the frequencies you want and amplify them :) unless it also has a sidechain filter ;)
Hey Is there a way to Undo / Redo changes that I've make to presets in a Synth like Xfer Serum (it doesn't have a built in function for this). I've used Logic and Studio One and they both have this feature. I know about the edit undo/redo and the one on the mix console but I couldn't find anything for 3rd party synth plugins. Also is there an 'automate last touched parameter' function in Cubase or do we still have to write enable a track and click around knobs while playing the track for them to show up on separate automation lanes? Please help me with this. I did try to contact you through Instagram (same user name) but I couldn't seem to get through.
Hello. I've watched one of your videos, you showed how to add bus tracks. Thank you very much for sharing. However, I'm trying to reverse the process and can't do it. What to do in this case thx.
What are you trying to do? Remove the bus? Just go on the group channel, right click and delete it . Then route your audio channel to the stereo out or any other bus :)
QUESTION: @DomSigalas are you in touch with the people who develop Cubase? I have a serious feature request that would be amazing. Can you ask them to please allow sequences from video editing programs to be imported into their timeline, instead of completed movies? This would be amazing because then you could edit in your door in the video and then switch over to Cubase and have the changes be live. Oh my goodness that would be huge for both companies. I hope I hope I hope they implement this :-) please pass on the message. Thank you
i already applied this after seeing your video of the vocalchain video in Cubase itself. very nice!! I have a question Dom, some use soothe2 for the bass, because its walking with the frequenties. for example 20hz to 70hz. its dynamic for lefr to right. and an de esser is static on for exampl 10k. can you develop some kind of bass tamer with Cubase. big love.
Soothe is a very special plugin. The closest thing you can do with Cubase is either add the Frequency 2 in dynamic mode or use a multiband compressor. But be cautious when using soothe with bass. You have to ask why you need to use it. Normally your bass should be fine with normal compression, dynamic EQ and a bit of automation :)
@@DomSigalasthanks for the reply, for example with trap bass, the peak vary in de sub range. 20hz to 60hz. with the frequentie plugin you compres the whole range as one. but you want dial in in each peak. like you did with tye sidechain in the de-esser. only that is one band. but you are right there are ways to get the same effect kiie you said. its just more time to set up. anyway thanks!
We professionally restore vinyl records for customers. Often the s-sounds are very clear in the upper frequencies, but in the range of 400 - 900 Hz they cause the other instruments to distort. That sounds terrible and no de-esser can do it. The only thing that helps here is a spectral cleanup where you delete the affected areas.
Rant / Complaint. 🤠 Dom , you are a very talented guy - I’ve followed you for years, every time you drop a video, I’ve tried to do it on my own but Cubase gives me a headache the size of Texas. I mean the whole Steinberg system sucks to be honest. Their contents might be some of the best out there, but what’s the point if you can’t get to them. One app for download, one for activation, another for library management, now I have to transfer all of my licenses from the USB drive to the eLicenser which has to be done one by one. What a mess!!! Oh don’t get me started if you own absolute, you can’t upgrade a single instrument, you have to upgrade the whole package even if it’s one instrument upgrade. Jeezzzzz - I’ll still be watching you do your thing coz I enjoy your videos, but Viva Native Instruments! On app for everything. Done! Wow!!! 😢
Great video. All to often we just skip over the stock plugins because the ones we pay for are way better right?….. Yep, I’ve fallen into that trap more than I would care to admit. One final thing, I hope I was not alone in singing along thinking it was ‘shine like a porn star’ which I always thought was an odd lyric. 😅
I can't understand how Steinberg can't develop decent GUIs for plugins that are good like Frequency! It's annoying to use controls that are poorly positioned and crammed into little space. I don't think a new paid version needs to be released so they can offer some improvements.
The amazing capabilities of Plugins somehow makes people use them like hi-tech weaponry, in this case abolishing forever every vestige of a sibilant singer’s habit. In fact, de-essers have mixers searching for sibilance just to hear them work. Truth is, sibilance is rare in a singer. They have great use as a bespoke harshness remover on any type of recorded signal. Drummer hasn’t yet learned how to play cymbals? DeEsser to the rescue!

Thanks Dom for this great tip. I just tried it on my HiHat and Lead Bus and it works very well. For vocals, I prefer to edit the track manually.
Thank you so much for all the information, Dom! I am a long time Cubase user and with your videos I learn more and more about it
Thanks Dom! I've used the de-esser to get rid of nasty bass thumps, but monitoring to find the exact frequencies is a really helpful tip!

So in theory, I could also use the frequency eq in dynamic mode and just dynamic eq out the narrow frequencies
