Huge Sinkhole - Finedon

  • Locals have told me that a sink hole has opened up above the 110 year old Thingdon underground Ironstone mine of Finedon, Northamptonshire. I head up the hill to investigate to find one massive hole in a field. Over time the land water has moved through the soil and through the underground caverns. Since this mine is older than the rest in the area, the tunnels area not of decent build quality as such mines as Irthlingborough Mines (EBBW Vale). Leading to cave-ins all over this piece of land over the decades past.
This is the very reason why Housing developers can NOT build here. Alan Pack was a mine inspector for the area and had written off a huge report as to why developers can not build here. he also has an epic website with all the information one could ever wish for on the area. Link is www.apack1.co....

Great vid. Thanks David. Been so much rain lately. And after a bone dry summer heatwave, it’s the perfect recipe for a collapse.

Explored that mine several times before, walked down that very tunnel. The timber supports are fully rotted and you can out your finger through them. Lots of evidence of partial collapses, and now this...
In the other field over you can see a visible dip, it is the remains of a vertical air vent that used to go into the mine, we were able to locate it whilst inside. Even got a map of the place from the geological society 😅

Hi Purple, thanks for taking the time to share this with us, as I don't live far from it it's very interesting to me. Having been brought up here I have heard the story of the last one to happen. I have heard much about mining in Finedon over the years, but hope to learn even more from your other videos. 👍. Ps someone's got to say it, I bet looking at that gave you a real sinking feeling. 😂😂🤦🏻‍♀️

That's a good 'un! I was wondering when the next one would appear when I was driving over to Finedon the last time I was over. My granny used to say it was the old mines that keep Finedon Finedon, preventing it becoming a suburb of Wellingborough. Great drone footage, there's no way I'd get in the hole, I've heard too many stories and remember the big rescue op in the 70's.

Back in around 1995 Barratt Homes were developing land in Irthlingborough on which formerly stood a tannery if I'm correct?
During a conversation with the manager of the site he told me that when they were demolishing the tannery a chap came onto site who formerly worked as an engineer on the extensive mines complex.
Armed with an array of maps he then went on to point out where all the tunnels were in the immediate area, fascinating stuff!
I knew the area had been been heavily mined but knew nothing about the tunnels,I thought it was all open cast.
Thanks for posting, hope this is of interest.

The mine inspector who you speak of is the legendary Alan Pack. The man who told developers they can't build here. The land above the mines at Finedon is up for sale for £19million for development. I fear once Alan moves to the next world the developers will come on in

@@PurpleVision23 Thanks for your reply, have you ever come across the series of books by Eric Tonks , absolutely facinating.
Another site we worked on in Irthlingborough was at the
rear of Whitworths factory, although I wasn't present to see this apparently they opened up a sealed tunnel portal which revealed all manner of artifacts including Napoleonic era cannon balls! That would have been 2003 ish.
Heard that from a number of different people so there may be some truth in it?
Interesting channel you have here .
      Regards.

I've seen a few of those over the years. Your Drone footage is brilliant, thanks for that. As I remember they used to fill them in by cutting down lots of hedgerow and dumping it in the hole then bulldozing soil over it.

As kid I had heard of mines near Irchester , probably a part of the same mines . My Mother knew a woman that as a kid got lost down there . I must admit if they had still been open as a kid I would have had a look inside . It's mad you never know what's under your feet . Sink holes can be natural but mines obviously don't help . The Airfield where I work has a sink hole ....just a shaft very narrow . They think it was man made and to with mining but after a survey there is nothing else . And also when we had runway repairs they found a WW1 live bomb . Yes one of ours , turns out back then where the airfield is now was a bombing range back then !!! . Perfect place to build an airfield then lol .
