This brought back memories for me. In 1990 a wooden culvert under my local canal collapsed causing a substantial vortex. Several nearby properties were flooded and the access road blocked. Initially large hay roll bales were thrown into the whirlpool in an attempt to stem the flow until the emergency crews arrived. Relatively the canal is broader and deeper than average. So you can imagine The disruption it caused. Great video thanks for posting Brad. Subscribed.
Evening News Headline: Local man named Brad pulls giant stopper from canal in Middlewich. Same man seen revisiting the devastation 2 days later. Local authorities are asking for your help in tracking down this man.
Possibly a culvert going under the canal has failed . The ground on the right hand side seems to have a ditch there and be a lot lower than the left side ,so probably water may have started leaking and then failed . Badgers are really helpful in banks collapses too! But defo no sinkhole !! They laid a thin layer of clay all over the dug out strata , and very often turned a load of sheep in it and penned them in for a while , to puddle it in properly ! This in the late 1700's which was when it was built .
This is part of the Shropshire union canal the Middlewich branch, my mate that works for the water ways has told me it was caused by badgers and rabbits that have burrowed into the bank underneath the canal and the bank collapsed taking a portion of the canal with it..the canal bridge over the river is just the other side of crater were you can see the river....
It looks like the levee on the side of the canal broke and washed out. A sinkhole would go down, that water went out through the side and took the trees with it. Would not have wanted to be downstream of that one, would have been a heck of a ride, lol.
Looks like a lot of "housing" and livelyhood has been lost! Be a good time for a canal cleanup. Yep you need to metal detect a 200 year old canal, should be gold and silver in there.
Nice Video! The sinkhole title drew me in.. still was interested in the canal giving way just as much... But I watch Brummies Outdoors & I think I have seen you before on there, contributing to a group outing... So I Subscribed & Liked your video. It was nice of the young lady to hold your camera while you dropped over that fence.
As far as why there may be all of those tires in the canal. Perhaps some boats had tires on the sides to act like bumpers, attachments rot off and thus the tires fall into the canal. Just a guess.
Thanks for putting 1/2 of the song credit up! I am searching for the song on SoundCloud now! :) You have great taste in music, so that makes you all right in my book!
Great video, they need to dredge the canal and put the mud in the hole , that would make the canal deeper and fill in the hole. from the USA. take care.
Thats a washout NOT a sinkhole! you can clearly see the canal wall is gone where the water cut through it. That canal has at least eight feet of black silt in it.
cletrac12c Canals are never eight feet deep to start with, only about 4 in the middle with sloping edges. Barges are often stuck on the bottom when the locks are used too frequently. But there is certainly a lot of crap in there.
Boat owners use the car tyres on their put in points to save the hull from getting damaged by the bank Brad...That's why there are so many car tyres in the canal.
Hi there great channel Bud. I would defo look for some old vintage bottles or relics on that cannal bed. Bet there loads of history hiding there. Thank for sharing. 👍
wow yea thats a big hole. think that was a lot larger than the hole in the canal in romiley when that went. it drained but not as deep as the this one. you will have to see if you can find some info about it brad. happened in the early 80s
Great vid. I wonder how much silt has filled in over the centuries. I can't believe the canal bridged OVER another river. a monumental task at the time I'm sure. I live on the Mississippi river and often ponder being able to see thru the water. Brad, when you turned 30 you aged 10 years. HA. you'll need a selfie stick that doubles as a walking stick soon.
Great footage and thank you for sharing but I do not think this is a sinkhole. I think this was a washout of a canal wall or bank. Still very interesting to see the power of water at the washout point.
Hi Brad, Thank you for freezing your buns off to make and share this with us. It was really interesting to see. I’ll bet there are a few canal boat owners that are a bit unhappy. Thank you again. Stay safe, blessings! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😀
That's one pretty major breach. I remember the lock pound being drained for maintenance on the Keadby and South Yorkshire where I lived. Got the usual obligatory shopping trolleys, bicycles, road cones etc but right at the bottom was a WW2 motorcycle and sidecar combo which is now restored and in a museum...... crazy! A few miles upstream I know of several cars in there. Local joyriding yobs or guys doing insurance jobs use to drive them in. The waterways authorities have probably removed them now but never ceased to amaze me the stuff that found its way in there. K&SY navigation a good bit deeper as larger 'Sheffield' commercial barges once plied their trade along there along with Richard Dunstons shipbuilding which launched some sizeable vessels into the cut but that's a story in itself.
you can make out the original depth of the canal from your footage. The opposite side where you are walking you can see the dark silt at edge followed by the clay beneath. sometimes there are measurements on the original concrete cills indicating 6ft at cill. The dark silt has built up over the years covering the clay that was actually placed by hand and "puddled" to create a watertight seal. considering when this was done I find amazing.
Someone somewhere is so unlucky, that if they would have been on that canal in a boat, they would have been in just the right spot to have been sucked down that hill and have their boat destroyed. On the way down the hill, it would also explode and catch fire and burn to a cinder despite being surrounded by water. Then they would get stuck and remain there until the verge of death before someone rescues them. They will get rescued and recover, but get a very steep bill that will cause all sorts of other troubles. Of course, someone with that kind of luck usually has some idea of their luck and would avoid doing things that seem potentially dangerous, such as boating on a canal (boat could sink/catch fire/lightning strike). Probably why there was nobody caught up in this. The really unlucky people wouldn't have been around the area.
Canals had drains with plugs to facilitate cleaning out. Occasional excavtaor snag the pug and all the water runs into nearest river. I've heard of this before. Look fo rvideos of Elland Canal Bridge being rebuilt to see how shallow canals are.
B A Canals are only just deep enough for flotation of barges, three or four feet! The lining is clay to keep the water in, so you can’t dredge them much!
Brad, Sorry to see what happened there. I hope that the engineers push all thd soil/mud into the crater that was left from the disaster. That will clean the canal and eliminate the expense of hauling in the fill needed. Very interesting video. Watch your channel a lot here "across the pond". Good work. Carry on.
It’s going to cost £3million to repair the breach. The canals are maintained by the canal and river trust. Which is a charity. If they don’t raise the funds to fix it. It’ll stay empty.
I am surprised at how shallow the canals are. Not what I expected. Did you say an under the canal bridge collapsed? I didn't quite understand what happened.
Hi Cindy? When the canals were built they were sometimes built over rivers and water courses , They had to construct something over the water course below that would let the canal carry on uninterrupted. A couple of weeks ago M.F.A. did a video with Ravengirl on an aquaduct that carried the canal over a road. Where this one has collapsed it sprung a leak and as it flowed away the hole just got bigger with the volume of water involved. The canals dont have to be deep because the narrowboats/barges have a very shallow draft and are virtually flat bottomed. They become very unstable when taken from the canals and onto the rivers or even by some very brave folk the sea! Sorry to post on your piece Brad! An excellent film by the way Brad well done!
Burning Sands Exploration Google canals in uk, viaducts and locks, it's a way of keeping the river flowing and boats moving up and downstream, very clever really when you think how old these structures are.
Thats awesome Brad it's good how you got over the fence to check out the sink hole! By the way, I'm sure you're not far from me, I'm in Stockport. Lewis
RJM@54 3/25/2018 Does the Canal have walking paths down both sides of it also it would be a good time to organize a community clean-up of the canal removing a lot of the items you saw in it along with other items
There's what's called a tow path, usually down one side. In the old days when barges were towed by horses or mules, the tow path was for the beasties doing the towing.

Good point
Ideal opportunity to give it a clean out / dredge. Then, rebuild the breached bank that's caused the drain off. Great video.

Sounds like a good time to have a canal clean up party, couple skips and some volunteers, haul out the trash and remove some mud.

I forgot to say it was interesting to see an empty canal after watching so many magnet fishing videos!!! Thanks!
Without you kid I wouldn't have know about this, thanks for showing us.
Brad the last time I looked down a hole that big I ended up with a son lol luv him with all me heart ❣👍
You too huh, I thought it was just me. I love mine with all my heart also!

You are so funny. You made me smile. Thanks.
thx for filming that Brad!
Good video, didn't realize how shallow the canal was.
Great up-load sir. Much deeper than it looked in the pics!
Seeing the profile of the canal was super cool! Nice video!
Blimey that was strange to see , it looked very shallow , it needed a good dredging , thanks for sharing .
this guy is a literary genius

Sink hole was thirsty is all. But go back every day and you can say, "I see this sort of thing every day!".

Very good video never seen the canal like this b4 but surely it should be deeper around the sides, keep going brad ur doing an awesome job
Aye aye mayte ! Bloody sank hole left me dingy on its starburd

I like the way you start your video's. So cool
It is like the Dead Sea. Whereabouts is this as I can’t find anything on google, except this video 😂
Great footage and thank you for sharing but I do not think this is a sinkhole. I think this was a washout of a canal wall or bank. Still very interesting to see the power of water at the washout point.
Sinkhole? Where? That's the embankment giving way not a sinkhole, a common thing with canals, a bit like a landslide.
Hi Brad, Thank you for freezing your buns off to make and share this with us. It was really interesting to see. I’ll bet there are a few canal boat owners that are a bit unhappy.
Thank you again. Stay safe, blessings! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😀
Yay!!!! Good to see your smiling face.....
You should have started your intro with a sink plug on the end of a magnet and a startled face....
B3NN10N omg that would of been awesome

WOW, just wow. Thanks for the video.
Very cool to see. Sinkholes are fascinating. Thanks for risking your neck for us!
This one makes me smile like someone said. CHEESE.
Cheese
The canal in little lever near bolton broke its bank many years ago, love the vids keep them rollin brad.
thats one god damn sink hole lol id a been in that canal looking for old bottles good video gl&hh
Odd it looks more like a breach in the canal wall than a sinkhole. The hole being scoured out by the force of the water.
It is a breach, according to the newspaper. At least, one hopes it's a breach, because a sinkhole would be next to impossible to plug.
also you have to give credit to the engineers of the day. it will have only lost water between the locks.
you can make out the original depth of the canal from your footage. Now is a good time for the towns to clean the canal of the big stuff.
Very interesting video. Well done for braving the cold.
They should dreg the canal while its low
Thats a sink hole
So if thats not a sink hole where is the water going
Well dig it out then. A small fleet of front end loaders could have most of that silt out in a week or so.
The power of Mother Nature!
Saw this in the paper. Interesting to see a video of it!
I hope the canal can be temporarily filled so people can refloat their boats long enough to move them somewhere else. Maybe a giant cork? :-)
Job well done my friend! Thumbsup for you:)

That was awesome! I would have loved to see it happen😁
all them poor fish too brad thanks for the video very interesting cheers
Pretty neat to see i like this
I knew one day one of you guys would find the drain plug with your magnet and spoil it for everyone!
That's a huge tragedy. All those stranded canal boats, people live in those too. Now they are sorta homeless.
Thanks 4 shering. Its very interisting.

I've heard of this before.

very interesting video. enjoyed that one! I gained some valuable info for my next magnet fishing adventure. cheers
How often do they dredge the canal, looks like it need it.

It’s not that shallow , that’s how canals are ! Deeper in the middle where boats generally navigate .
That was really interesting, thank you for making this vidio for us...
yes Brad keep it up pal videos are great
That’s not a sinkhole. That’s a broken levy. It’s cause you pulled out too much metal.
Hey Brad! this is crazy, it's like the magnet fishing equivalent to the 10 minute Freeview :D
Look! A sinkhole that’s devoured millions of gallons of water! I’m gonna stand right on the edge!
screamingmimi90 its not hungry for humans 🤣
Great opportunity to clean the canal.

Very clean canal
oo that one fellow was lucky not to have his boat caught in the canal break...and down the hill.
That's not going to be a overnight quick fix. WOW
Amazing video
ALL CANALS HAVE A PLUG !! SOMEONE Has obviously pulled it
Look, there's a safe... Keeps walking!!! Ahhhhh!
That's not a sinkhole ,it's a landslide
That is quite massive sinkhole.
Giant Sinkhole Swallows Canal!!! "Oh, it's not a sinkhole…"
Thank you. Very fun adventure. ( :
Wow! I hope no one got hurt!
Mudlarking time brad cool vid dude
Very interesting problem. I'll be interested to hear how this all gets fixed.
I love your intros.
that 2nd bike looked like a Raleigh Chopper
So glad this wasn't click bait 😜
It’s going to cost £3million to repair the breach.
The canals are maintained by the canal and river trust.

It’ll stay empty.
I hope nobody was hurt when you pulled that plug Brad, careful next time lol
Lol
I am surprised at how shallow the canals are. Not what I expected. Did you say an under the canal bridge collapsed? I didn't quite understand what happened.
no me neither it was a bit backwards the explanation...I think the river runs under the canal there where it collapsed.....

This is an extreme version.
Clive. R ...thank you, Clive. I am in America and we don't have canals like this so I am not familiar with the construction.

"eh, that's my bloody bike !"
Thats awesome Brad it's good how you got over the fence to check out the sink hole! By the way, I'm sure you're not far from me, I'm in Stockport.

Ringway Manchester I’m Stockport to wooooo
Haha thought so!
And you mentioned getting recognised too, it's weird isn't it! haha
