Perfect. I just started with the Alfred book one and yes it says this in it. It says it very precisely. But seeing it in action and hearing you describe the how and why, wonderful.
Thank you for this! I especially like the part about standing and noticing how your hands form a natural curve. I sometimes have my students stand up from the bench, let arms hang to the side, form a 45 degree angle at the elbows, then sit and slightly lower hands to keys.
So glad I found your two videos on sitting and hand position. I've doing everything wrong. I've been playing for some time and I'm not sure how to get rid of my bad habit - my fingers tend to stick up as I'm playing - especially my pinkies. What can I do to stop this habit?
Hi, I'm new to learning how to play the piano. I've tried a couple of times to teach myself a few songs but not that I'm in a proper school I've noticed I have a terrible posture. My hands take a very tense, claw-like shape that I can't fix. I can make the "c" shape with my hand but once I start pressing the keys everything goes to hell. The fingers playing form a very weird line, the ones that are not playing lift themselves from the keyboard and my thumbs crawl into themselves. I've been trying to correct that in the past month but nothing happens and I still do the same. How can I fix that? Are there any posture excercises I can use? Do I need to go to hand rehab or have it checked? HELP, PLEASE
Tip: every time you do it wrong, slap yourself. By instinct, you will not want to get slapped and try to make it better. If this doesn't work I don't know what will.
My son is in Suzuki piano and us parents had to learn piano the first 8 weeks and it was all about the hand. The hands should be relaxed and gathered like you are hold a small ball. If you are holding you hand tense, to train it away, play a few notes, the take your hands of the keys and relax them, then put them back and play the next notes. Look at you hand and make sure you are not tensing it. Slow down your playing to the point that you can manage to stay calm and relax. Play like this until you get your hands in control, maybe for days or weeks so it gets in you muscle memory, the gradually speed things up
Hi topaz, the music is readily available. It is Bach's Prelude in C no 1, book 1, from his Well Tempered Clavier, otherwise known as the '48' Preludes and Fugues. Best wishes Tim
How one is seated is important #1. Sitting up with a straight, but not rigid back. Feet on floor in front, not sideways. When you played the Bach your wrist went up to create a more level wrist position, but not when you were explaining hand position. I feel it's very important to have a "level" wrist that flows into the arched fingers, arm in the shape of a "lounge chair, not an L shape," and breathe while one plays. I assume you explain "hammering the keys versus pressing them down" for beginners somewhere else on youtube? And btw, I find young boys (and a girl or two now and then) often do this automatically and it helps them concentrate: relax their jaw muscles and stick their tongues out a little bit while playing the piano and/or as they read music, especially. Relaxing the back of the tongue is very helpful for concentration and staying released while reading music. I teach it to all of my students! :)
I already taught myself this same piece “Bach’s Prelude In C major” by ear. For this song, I use both hands to play the arpeggios and such but with most pieces or songs, is one hand doing the chord and the other playing the melody? Do both hands play the chords in different octaves sometimes?
The Chopin hand position is in reference to, for the right hand, thumb on E, 2 in F#, 3 on G#, 4 on A#, and 5 on B. The longer fingers rest on the further-from-the-pianist black keys while the thumb and pinky rest on closer white keys. B major for right hand, Db major for left hand (5 on F and 1 on C, thumb making a whole step from the black key) It is not B for thumb of the right hand and pinky on F sharp. Pinky is too weak and short to play any black key in any scale unless the player wants to play inefficiently/unpianistically.
this is the best position for beginners - after years of playing your hand will naturally adapt to what's best for your particular hands - especially if you specifically play one type of music genre
I've been wanting to play the piano, but as a very skeptical and overthinking person it is a huge hindrance, Can someone give me insight? Where should your elbows be when your playing, should it be higher than the keys or just the level of the keyboard?
Been playing for 2 months now, just from RUclips vids, and learnt this intro in 2 mins. Does that mean I'm doing any good? Or just got a good ear? 🤷🏼♂️
I have an issue my fingers are so thick... If I press a white key in between two black keys or even next to a black key... I end up pressing both, I have been playing for 20 years now and the only way I can play is to curve my fingers to press only the bottom part of the white keys and extend my finger if I want to play a black one... It makes me really slow compared to other pianists
2:25 : The angle of your left hand is what I have on my right hand. Unfortunately, my muscle on the wrist's upper side (don't know the name) swells up after 10 minutes of playing and then I need about 4-5 hours to be able to play again. I've seen countless videos and most of them have this angle where the wrist ends. I don't know what's going wrong. Any tips?
Is there simething 'wrong' with him? Its not a problem if there is im just wondering why it sounds like theres a build up of syliva in his mouth when he talks
Did anyone else get "we're stroking your ego" in this video vibes? "Chopin always used to have his students place their hand down to play a B major scale." "In this WELL-KNOWN BACH PRELUDE IN C." You want me to feel cool. I get it. XD
You show the proper positioning of the hands as far as height and shape of the hands but you don’t show me where to place the left and right hand on the keyboard in relationship to middle C you don’t have it it’s not there why did you say it was in the title when it isn’t in the video?

Thank you! I’m pretty good at piano but whenever I finish playing a piece on my left hand it really hurts

Weird that the position he demonstrated without playing was different that the one used while he was actually playing.

Hmm, it is okay to see a doctor for that , maybe try a few other positions. Or maybe you put to much tension on your wrist.
He looks like Eobard Thawne from Flash 😂
What I got from this....drinking wine is good for correct piano hand placement.
I rather liked this
Not me coming on here at grade 3 because my old piano teacher didn't teach me and now my new one is complaining.
