AWResistance You fear it so much that you are too paralyzed to even try and do something about it. They are way more courageous than you and most of the society who prefers to embrace the pro-aging trance instead of fighting it.
I prepare for death almost every day by worshipping my Creator. There isn't anything to be done except accepting our inevitable demise. It's where we spend eternity that really matters. Don't get too comfortable in this mortal realm.
AWResistance Well since you're religious you could look at combating ageing from a charitable point of view. Ageing brings lots of suffering to the ones that have it, and that usually gets worst and worst the more it advances. Old people have to go trough decades of suffering till they one day die due to the advanced decaying of the body.
Longevity is the key to solving problems that span many current generations. When people can see themselves in the far future they will care about the long term effects of their actions today.
I don't see aging as a disease, and with a society as we have, such traitement will cost millions and be available just for the bourgeoise, separating more and more the poor from the rich. It will just be identical to the Love, Death and Robots series/tv show.
I like the whole idea of staying young (young soul). Just because you are getting old doesn't mean you have to give up taking of yourself or your appearance leading to a more fulfilling life. But getting older or growing older has always good things too. So taking a good care of yourself + life experience = amazing person.
The reason chromosomes have telomeres which shorten is to prevent the prolongation of old cells which have acquired DNA damage and hence are at risk of developing tumours. Preventing this process may inhibit ageing but will promote the development of cancer cells.
@infinitejest. While that is true, the shortening of telomeres is only one of many defenses against damaged cells. It is a last ditch defense. For cells to ge to the point where a telomere is the executioner, many other processes must have already failed. Also, there are many processes inside cells to fix damage to DNA. While it is true that we will not live forever (there are so many external causes of death and biological damage), it is possible to extend the part of life where we are in much better health, so that we might have a good biological life for 80 years instead of 50. Of course, most of the "anti-aging" market is snake oil. lol
not true, sperm cells maintain telomere length through telomerase and don't become cancerous. That's why your children, that come from your older cells, are born younger than you are. There are also animals that maintain telomere length and are negligibly senescent, like Lobsters and Alligators for example.

em0potatoe Yes, that's the right attitude, don't try to achieve something great in life, it's easier to bring down to your level the ones who did. It's people just like you that keeps humanity from achieving it's full potential. If we all were equally mediocre, you would't have a more confortable lifestyle than kings and queens did hundreds of years ago. You would be a miserable paysan working the fields, but at least you would be equal to the other miserable paysans, by the way with a life expectancy of 30 years or less. People like you know only to complain and envy others, all that while being too lazy to build their own success. Pathetic.
Age is just a number, and it depends on what we think about ourselves. Age is what you make it, if you think that you are old you already old if you think you are young, congratulation, you are young at heart.
She is so right, to risk her own life and make this sacrifice is a very small price if it can mean the end of so much suffering and death for so many, especially if she feels her thinking is sound and the results significant enough to warrant this risk. Good for you Liz for doing this for the potential benefit of so many, I commend you!
I mean I started by 'Nah" so I doubt I agreed I have a midlife crisis. On the other hand staying healthy and away from cancer and Alzheimers seems really nice, since I have personal experience of these diseases in my family. Also, the thought of death kinda scares me since im not religious or believe in any unproven shit like that, so I don't think I would call that midlife crisis but a general avertion towards sickness and death sounds more like it.
ildisiri I am not religious either, but I don't call it "shit" just because I don't believe in it. If you are actually 23, like you say you are, I would expect you to have at least a little bit of decency.
This really ought to be titled “Forever Healthy”. We’ve always worked to keep people healthy for as long as possible. This is just an extension of this. Remaining healthy for longer and longer will result in extending life expectancy.
Staying healthy is much better than living a longer life. But since the research says that ageing is directly related to certain diseases, then I guess it's a "kill 2 birds with 1 stone" idea, which is great.
It is accumulated damage that causes ageing. We can intervene to end ageing and the suffering it causes. Senescent cells and mitochondria cause a lot of damage. We will see therapies emerge, over the next twenty years, targeting the diseases of ageing. Longer lifespans will be a side effect of this intervention.
With genetic engineering you can improve upon the cell's ability to repair its DNA, fix it telomeres, and make tissue that is resist the spread of cancer cells. Such work has been done in mice, and has lead to mice that live 2x longer than normal and are highly resistant to cancer.
I can see why people are afraid of 'living forever', especially when it is involuntary. I don't think anybody is suggesting that we subject all humans to a kind of compulsory treatment that extends our lives indefinitely. Instead, the idea is to develop a treatment to prevent, slow, or reverse ageing, when and if a person wants to. You can choose to die at 100 if you want to, some may want to live longer, some may not. I see the real problem here as 'choice'. Sooner or later, human technology will stumble upon the fountain of youth but this will make people conflicted because now they are forced to decide on the most fundamental and arguably the biggest decision of their existence. Our lives were given to us by our parents, but now we have to decide if we want to take it away. Imagine hating your mother for dying because she didn't 'choose' to live longer. Or, imagine your children hating you for living longer because they won't get your inheritance. In the past, we could blame death on ageing which takes individual choices out of the equation, but in the future, this may change. Personally, I think people should be given a choice to extend their lives or die a natural death. I don't like the notion of 'not thinking about something' just because it is too hard. That's silly, and that's just avoiding reality. These are questions that everybody needs to think about and reflect on because it is what truly gives meaning to our lives. "What am I living for?" "Why do I do this?" "Who will miss me when/if I'm gone?" "Was I such a terrible person that nobody will miss me when I'm gone?" If you think these questions are too hard and therefore you don't want to think about it, then you can choose to let ageing take you. But for those who need more time on this Earth to figure out the mysteries of life, they can choose to extend their lives.
Yeah I completely agree with @Gold. We got out of mature nature's grasp a long time ago. We no longer live as a part of ecosystem. We created our own. Natural overpopulation rebalancing happens only in the wilderness. Now, if we manage to not destroy ourselves, we can safely live forever. And colonizing other planets will take care of overpopulation. Or we take care of it other way. After all, we are intelligent species.
She seems to be failing with that at the moment But with the full blown attack of climate change human population might crash down to a billion or two.
frostytokes why does it make you sad? What’s sad is the thought of being 80 and knowing your time is coming to an end any day now. It must be terrifying and if something can give them hope without tricking a vulnerable group of people into spending money on snake oil, then I see no issue.

Never mind ageing I dislike ageing it ruins people and it sucks and it kills very slowly and badly. I would take 23 years old again and immortality over ageing and being one step closer to death.
The ones who want to live forever are the ones who are absolutely nuts. We have a whole lifetime to get used to the idea that we are not immortal. I can't think of anything worse than having to live a longer life. I would rather spend my immortality on the Other Side than spend a longer amount of time on this side of life. It is the Other Side where the peace is and it is immortal.
Once on the other side, there is no more fear since your immortal self is impervious to any damage. Our whole life on earth is filled with physical instincts to survive with 5 basic senses.

I think aging is somehow beautiful up to some point where you start to develop problems because of that, but aging shows experience, emotions, it shows part of who you are and how has life shaped you some might even have the luck to age and look better than when they were young, more sophisticated even. What is the real beauty in looking 20 all your life besides the outside, if what you have inside is all rotten? Age can bring also sometimes respect from the youngsters, it is something that should not be looked at as horrible, stopping the process at some point may be beneficial for the health but the appearance is not to be considered the whole purpose.

@dominique hall diabetes type 1 is caused by the failure of pancreatic cells which are what produces the body’s insulin. This is a genetic disease in which the death process of these cells is rapidly sped up, meaning that by investigating the genetic process of aging and cell death she could have a reasonable chance of using stem-cell science combined with telomere lengthening treatments to construct a new pancreas for her son with genetically identical cells. This would mean that her son could have an organ transplant which would not be rejected by his body, but this time the cells would have a much longer lifespan and function normally. But this is purely theoretical. :)
Extending human life even more can have horrible consequences for this planet. This is specially true if the biggest consumers on the planet extend their lives and the accompanying foot print.

I really don't understand why such opposition to life extension? We should all try to be healthy for as long as possible. Unless it is the religion that prevents people to accept scientific possibilities, one should strive to support the science in aging. But if it is religious belief in life after death that keeps someone going, fine. Everyone should choose and not judge the other.
I think it is very unlikely that we will get far with life extension technology in the current generation's lifetime. But it is possible that the grandchildren of someone born today will be the last generation to die. Having said that, I find the opposition to the prospect of life extension absolutely absurd and people have such strong views of it. The truth is, if you have the option to live for a few hundred years, you can always end it early if you want to. People talk as though you're being forced to live that long. It's like people want to not only die, but get to old and weak and die in a nursing home with dementia.
2LegHumanist how old are you? I mean increasing lifespan will come in about 20 or 30 years ... but it'll give you some 10 to 20 extra years and maybe science discover how to reverse aging completely
2LegHumanist well i can't deny that. But there are many scientist involve in this subject ... dr sinclair (NAD+ Project) Google's and Paypal's CEO(Nanobots, which probably this or next year might be using as a cancer therapy, which will help our inmune systems finish the job by helping reconstruct damage cells in our entire body and DNA) and the last one is about initiative 2045 ... the transhumanism. So what do you think about that?
There are two projects that I would live all behind to be part on, the Sword Art online, Matrix and USS Calister device on the second place, but becoming a non-aging person will be the first one. There is nothing more valueble then time on our existance,It doesn't matter where you are, the most of the people wants more time, so the research will keep going till it will be reached. Every power aspect has the rich/poor duality but I prefer to live on a world with the immortality possibility, and throw myself on a black hole when I become tired to live, and regret possibily this thought during the journey. I already have more to live then my time allows, so why not have illimited time. Travel for the space and create life on anothers planet, it will take some time.
this is clearly well-researched, well-planned and lucidly presented. no question it's another great work from the best broadcasting institution in the world.

I have wondered about that many times too, but regardless, if you pay attention, even just to a dawn bird singing, or a warm soft breeze or just a sip of a really good cup of tea when you are parched...you never run out of things to enjoy. You can never run out of books, movies, music, art, nature....Everything is online now. You can see so much without even leaving home. I know I have barely begun to scratch the surface of all the things there are to enjoy. A smile from a child in the market that sheepishly waves and says "hello" or a new food I never tried before. And learning is endless. Limitless. People who say they did everything and are ready to go, are not paying attention or looking around much beyond a very small window they see out of. And you do not need money to enjoy life. I sat outside under a canopy and had a coffee with my dog, watching the world rush by in the pouring rain and put my raincoat over my dog lol, because she hates the rain, and I had a lovely time. Watched people running around lol, getting wet. And listened to the sound of the rain, which I love. I had a great day and all I did was go grocery shopping and stop for a coffee when I was tired, until I felt re-energised. A perfect day. Pay attention to what is RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. A colour, a bird, a person, a dress in a shop window you like, a snail on the sidewalk that will get stepped on if you don't pick it up by the shell, gently, and put it under a bush. Someone out there needs you. Everyone can be needed even if it's just a bug to rescue from being stepped on or drowned in the rain. You could do it all to Mozart lol or you can listen to Led Zeppelin, it doesn't matter, as long as you enjoy it.

Well since you're religious you could look at combating ageing from a charitable point of view. Ageing brings lots of suffering to the ones that have it, and that usually gets worst and worst the more it advances. Old people have to go trough decades of suffering till they one day die due to the advanced decaying of the body.
After watching this, I still want to die fast and painless.

I agree with you, unluckily this experiment it is not for everyone.
Preventing this process may inhibit ageing but will promote the development of cancer cells.
infinitejest, sad but true.
Of course, most of the "anti-aging" market is snake oil. lol

@scotty3861 - you might want to let the person you are asking a citation from know by putting their handle at the start of your post.
not true, sperm cells maintain telomere length through telomerase and don't become cancerous. That's why your children, that come from your older cells, are born younger than you are. There are also animals that maintain telomere length and are negligibly senescent, like Lobsters and Alligators for example.

Nah I have it too, im 23. You are just religious or something moronic like that, to be able to comment that piece of shit.

This really ought to be titled “Forever Healthy”.
We’ve always worked to keep people healthy for as long as possible. This is just an extension of this. Remaining healthy for longer and longer will result in extending life expectancy.
JE Hoyes I think the point they were trying to me make is that healthy=young and the opposite is true.
Both work fine :)
@@nickl5658 Yup, Dr David Sinclair is doing great work on this, check him out on Joe Rogan.
@@nickl5658 Must be a good time to be a mouse.
"What am I living for?"
"Why do I do this?"
"Who will miss me when/if I'm gone?"
"Was I such a terrible person that nobody will miss me when I'm gone?"
If you think these questions are too hard and therefore you don't want to think about it, then you can choose to let ageing take you. But for those who need more time on this Earth to figure out the mysteries of life, they can choose to extend their lives.
This.
Exactly...well said my dear
Nice , wish more people thought like u
Apparently we live for the service of the God. Whether it exists or not.
Nobody will answer those questions, its not up to you to decide if you deserve to live longer. This will cause more trouble, and is not necessary
Mother Nature will always find a way to re-balance over-population!
Yeah, it's called "extinction", and we're practically begging for it.
We don't have to worry about that, that's within our control, not mother natures.
If not the politicians will 😝😝😝

What is the real beauty in looking 20 all your life besides the outside, if what you have inside is all rotten?

And trust me, I am sure that Plenty of men would be happy to go out with you.
So make youself look attractive.
Forget that! You want to be a slave to the beast system longer? I'm outta here, when the time comes.
Wha-
When time comes beast is who is waiting.
U just noob who doesn't know how to invest
Every one want to be imortal .
Live longer by being graceful and eating clean.
Aging is a part life .
It is part of life untill we remove it.
Awesome video. Ty BBC
Wonder how this helps her sons diabetes tho???
'Her son's diabetes' is the pretense for her search for what boils down to eternal life by circumventing God. Good luck with that...
@Dontworrybhappe Oh you...
Keto
And intermittent fasting
Yes. No sugar and cereals.
How about the island of Ikaria in Greece mostly they reached to a hundred years. Their secrets were "no social discriminations they helped each other if they needed .Their healthy food also are the main factors of combating aging.
Nathaniel David does look way younger, for someone who is 50 years old. Im sure he has experimented on himself.
Even if they do find a way of arresting the aging process, it will only be the very wealthy and priveledged that will be able to afford it.
sigh
That's false it would make much more sense economically ,to release the therapy to the public.....
I do not care about living more years. 75 is good enough for me, may be 78. But I'd like not to have eyesight problems, prostate problems, Hernia, erection problems, and so on.
Exactly, I hope science can help us live 75-80 healthy years on average. Everything beyond that is nice but not as urgent as having most people live the bulk of their life healthy. I already have some eyesight and back problems and i'm 28 so i'm afraid how bad things will get in my later life. I'm really hoping to reach 70 in relatively good health.
Right.
Yea a pervert needs to see and get a boner
+Daniel Meyers, Yas prefers limp biscuit.
90-100 or however long God Almighty wants me here.
If we dont die it doesnt give us drive and ambition and appreciation...the nature of death is more important then u think...
why do most of recent news of BBC not have subtitles? CNN is much quicker but I find news in BBC more interesting :((( I hope the management can upgrade this application please.
Imagine this!!!! we won’t have knee pain at 25 anymore 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Uhhh... You have knee pain at age 25?
James Alexander Rocha Robleto
I am 41. I've looked into this fairly deeply. I don't think there is anyone alive today who will live beyond 130.
Agreed, Angie. I have never understood why aging and death seem so well loved.
It would be funny if it turns out that there is an amazing afterlife after all and everyone who died already can watch the people of Earth try to extend their lives with pills and technology only to stay in this cold, cruel, and unjust world a little longer while we're all at the beach. That would be the ultimate irony.
@@dreamst8259 I agree . I enjoy life. I'm just saying it would be somewhat humorous if there was something awaiting us on the other side a million times better with none of the pain or trials and tribulations of this world but people were trying to extend their stay here. Lol.
@@STONESGAM we will meet the creator of this beautiful world that we have fallen in love with but us humans have corrupted it. We shall be accounted for it.
I want my family to be around with me forever but when the time comes we must go😢
Hehe good point
Why am i seeing this documentary today, its so cool, where was I in the world not to have watched this,😄. I really like the subject in this
love way she just explains it on a glass window...thought we had whiteboards in this day of age lol
Shes being creative do you know what that is
💅💆geing can be delayed with healthy life style,
Although at some point dealing with health problems and death at the end.this is why life should be enjoyed
Every second☺...

Hello
Terrifying this video, I feel strange after watching this, even I would say frightened about the future.
That creepy music in the background didn't help matters any!
I wouldn't worry about it... Each year tons of new unknown disease cause chemicals enter our environment. Not to mention new viruses. Watching climate change science documentaries is much more frightening. Sometimes things seem to be getting worse as the years go on and one must ask themselves, why live longer? The quality of items, foods, human interaction, natures wonders of the world is all going downhill and getting worse each year.
@@MGyoutube307 correct sounds like a punishment from the Lord above. As we have left him for our own man made laws and excepted slavery our masters are the bankers. We all in trouble
I am interested.
